• How to either completely remove SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation or repair it?

  I've installed MSSQL server correctly, then I took some wrong turns and I'm now left in a pretty undesirable state. I wanted to change the server instance to another drive, so I uninstalled SQL server and all of it's features from the Programs and Features control panel. Now when I tried to install a new instance, I got a few errors, but it still installed most of them: Then I tried to run a repair, which I figured would fix things, but it throws an exception about not being able to read something from the CD (tried more than once always the same exception) Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file R:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\SSCERuntime_x86-enu.msi , and it fails to repair a few of the features: And I don't have the server instance installed either. So I'm left with no MSSQLMS, no server instance, and no happiness. What would be the best course of action here?

I think that if wrap the find return strings with single/double quotation marks (\'or\") to feed to mplayer, the problem will be solved. But how can I do to solve the problem just use bash command, do not use bash or perl scripts, while can give me one perl line command use Perl Command-Line Options.

• "custom" routers for VPN - useful or waste of money?

  I use VPN in China and my current service contract expires soon so I was checking what sort of plans are out there now. I found that Witopia offers a "Cloak Box", what appears to be a Linksys wireless router with allegedly hacked/custom firmware to support VPN. Aside from allowing multiple computers to share one VPN connection, is there anything else at work here to justify that price when most new routers are $100 or less these days? Or is this something targeted towards the cd-rom cupholder crowd? And yes, I've contacted them, but haven't heard back yet... EDIT I've heard back from the company - here are the details if anyone else is interested: the router is a Linksys WRT54GL running TomatoVPN custom firmware the hardware waranty is one (1) year, from Linksys/Cisco the VPN is hard-set, so any device connected to the router MUST use the VPN (Witopia blocks torrents) I've decided it's not for me, but hopefully this information will prove useful to others.

  The debugfs manpage gives the impression that the command 'rdump . .' will recursively copy all files found on the specified filesystem from the debugfs cwd to the native filesystem's cwd. Instead I seem to receive a syntax error, and no copy is initiated? These are the commands I run: cd /path/to/transfer/destination debugfs /dev/sda1 -R rdump . . My task is to copy the entire contents of a clean yet unmountable USB storage device to its host machine's HD. The host machine does not support the inode size used by the USB device's filesystem (256) and its software is not upgradeable, so my intention was to use debugfs to transfer the files. If anyone has any other suggestions for this task I'd be grateful.

Mac os X files are invisible. Plug in on mac: indexMac.html opens. Win files are invisible. I know that every usb stick can be read by both platforms. • PowerChute for VMware ESX4

  Hi, I am looking for a free way of installing PowerChute for VMWare. The 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 Linux versions do not support VMWare ESX even though I think prior versions did. APC is now charging $100 for the install CD which I think is a joke considering the price of our Symmetra UPS. VMWare support should be free. Edit: I see someone voted this question to be closed, so to be clear i am looking for a free and legal way of getting PowerChute support for VMWare, by either using an older version or a custom script.   I have a WinXP SP3 installation modified by nLite. This particular installation was stripped off the QoS Packet Scheduler. I was advised to remove QoS because of the overhead it produces or something like that. Now, I read this lifehacker post about windows maintenance, and it says that on the contrary, by doing so I may have done more harm than good: Disabling QoS in Windows XP: Rumor had it that Microsoft had permanently tied up 20 percent of your net bandwidth for Windows Update. They didn't, and those who disable QoS, or IPv6, in XP actually end up with some pretty harsh connectivity problems. I tend to believe this, and now I seek a way to reinstall QoS. I tried to install it by going to network adapter properties - install - service, but there is no QoS there. I have the original, untouched WinXP SP3 cd. So, is there a way to bring back QoS into my WinXP installation, preferably without reinstalling windows from scratch?

  I have two servers: Server A (CentOS), where people can upload files to (upload root is /files) Server B (Win 2008), with FileZilla FTP Server (FTP root is C:\content) I want that whenever a file is uploaded to Server A, to any subfolder under /files, the file is automatically copied to the exact same subfolder on Server B. Thus, if a user uploads "flowers.jpg" to /files/photos/12345/ then the file must be copied over FTP to C:\content\photos\12345 So far I have this bash script, it does copy the files to server B, but all files are placed in C:\content, and not in the corresponding subfolders. Since I'm in a select agreement, I've gone into the Volume Licensing Service Center and downloaded the following three ISOs: Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (DVD) Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (CD) Office Multilanguage Pack 2007 Service Pack 1 But having mounted the ISOs in my RDS host, I still can't install anything they contain.   I've installed Cygwin under Windows 7 and I've added the line exec zsh -l to C:\cygwin\home\Viktor\.bash_profile. One command shouldn't take three lines. And how do I change the colors? Edit. I also have Console2 installed, which I have set to use Cygwin, if that's any help.

• Remote Installing OS X 10.5 on a PowerBook G4

  I recently acquired a PowerBook G4 (always loved the PPC architecture over Intel when it comes to Apple), currently it has OS X 10.4 installed. Unfortunately I can't find the original 10.5 install disc I had, though I made an ISO of it some time ago, which I've now burnt to a DVD-R DL disc (the SuperDrive is a DVD-R only iirc). This disc keeps being ejected by the PowerBook G4 (reads other discs just fine, except one). So I've been pondering doing a remote install, however the instructions I've seen are for MacBooks - I have DVD or CD Sharing installed, but the part in the instructions (http://guides.macrumors.com/Complete_Steps_to_Perform_a_Clean_OS_X_Reinstall_on_Your_MacBook_Air#Using_Remote_Install) about the 'Install Assistant', I don't get such a thing - only the BootCamp Installer. So my question is: How do I go about doing a remote install on this PowerBook G4? Or is there another alternative, without forking out on a new drive?

• External optical drive won't plug 'n play...sometimes.

  alright, I've looked a lot of different ways, but here goes. i have an external DVD burner that connects via USB and should be plug 'n play however sometimes when I connect it a message pops up requesting any CD or installation software it came with. It didn't come with any though. The confusing part is that if I wait a couple weeks and plug it in, then it works fine, but if I turn it off and back on the problem arises again. I've tried different computers, same problem. There's little to no customer support from the company, Ativa, and no drivers for the product. I'm hoping there's a registry trick for this. any help?

• Remote Yum mirror

  I have a bunch of remote computers that must be updated to the most recent packages for RedHat 4 and RedHat 5. I am using mrepo to mirror the RHN packages, however the remote computers do not have an internet connection. Because of this I have to update the mirror server that is part of the remote computers with a dvd. This is to cut down shipping costs to just a dvd. I am attempting to script this so I can fit all of the new packages on a CD or a DVD. I send updates about once or twice a month depending on package requirements. So my question is, is their a good method to do this so that the only things transferred are the new packages? I wish I could just use rsync. Thanks.

• Virtual box - How to add disks and move var, opt and home to them?

  I created a CentOS 5.6 Guest OS Virtual Machine. I made the first disk 10GB, I am rapidly outgrowing it. It was suggested that I make disks for my /var, /opt and /home directories and move them so I can better manage the disks for backing up and what not. This sounds like a good idea. I know how to create the disks in Virtual Box. I have dug around Google and the internet in general and all my attempts at doing this have failed. Snapshots are awesome! I can get the drives fdisked, and I have had limited success mounting them to /mnt/var, /mnt/home and /mnt/opt, but even in single user mode ( init 1 ) I can't get the entire contents of the directories to move over, and then the machine won't reboot correctly. cd /var cp * -ax /mnt/var The /var directory in particular is not wanting to move everything to the new location. How do I format, mount and move the /var, /opt and /home to my new disks?

• Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  Hey guys, I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Cannot login to OpenManage Server Administrator

  After freshly installed OpenManage Server Administrator from the CD that comes with my new server, Dell PowerEdge T110, I still could not figure out how to login successfully to the application. The server is running Windows 2008 SR2 Foundation and serves as a domain controller. I access its web interface locally using Firefox 3.6. On the login page and choose local system login. OMSA user's guide seems to state that I should be able to login using an Active Directory user. I tried Administrator, my_domain\Administrator, a a few combinations with the correct password. But none of them can logged in. Does Server Administrator requires any additional treatment to the user accounts, or what are the steps I missed here?

• Unable to boot to Ubuntu. Inconsistency in disk, X server didn't start. Illegal blocks in Inode

  I am unable to boot into my Ubuntu system. First I get that fsck died with exit status 4 Then I try to do it manually as prompted and I get that an Inode has illegal blocks and asked to clear it. Upon googling, I found that is because my HD has some problems I booted via Live cd and took a dd of the entire Ubuntu on an external HDD just in case. Is it safe to clear all the illegal blocks. How do I safely restore my environment if I replace my HD. Is there any thing i can do in the meanwhile to continue to use my laptop without significant loss of data. Perhaps a related error, the x server fails to start

• Adding git branch to bash prompt on snow leopard

I also have this alias: alias reload='. ~/.bash_profile' Sample run: user@machine:~/dev/rails$cd git_folder/ user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$git checkout master Switched to branch 'master' user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(master)$ As you can see it is being set correctly but only if I reload bash_profile. I have wasted way to much time on this. I am using bash on snow leopard. Please help!

• Windows 7 installation asks for DVD drivers

  I have installed Windows XP on my machine (Company CQ5020NL). Before I was able to do that, I set the SATA controller to IDE in the bios. Now I want to install Windows 7 upgrade. The DVD boots into the installation setup, but when I click "Install now" and am asked to load "A required CD/DVD drive device". When I click "Browse" I can browse the installation dvd and the drive I want to install to. I have tried all the SATA options in the bios already. I have no idea what to do... can anybody help me out?

• insert system disk error after switchting SATA cables

  I have 5 hard disks built in my computer, two connected by IDE cables, three by SATA. Today I had to return two of the SATA cables to my room mate. So I grabbed another one I had floating around and connected the remaining disk by unplugging my DVD R/W. Now I receive the 'insert system disk and press enter' error after booting. Disks and cables seem to be fine, since all the disks are recognized in the BIOS. Also, I can mount the disks using a live CD w/o problems. I also tried different orderings of the cables (i.e. plugging the disks in different plugs on the mainboard), I'm not sure if that even matters using SATA. Any Ideas what might be the problem here? The OS installed are Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10, the bootloader installed is GRUB. PS: No RAID involved, JBOD.

• "Request not supported" in IPCONFIG (WinXP SP3)

  In a customer PC (Windows XP SP3), suddenly the network went down: the network adapter appears with an error mark. I replaced the network card, but the new one does the same thing. When I enter IPCONFIG, XP shows this error (in standard and safe mode): Internal error occurred Request not supported Unable to query host name If I start the system with a boot cd the PC runs fine, so the problem seems to be in the XP installation. I tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the network card in the Device Manager disabling and reenabling the card netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset catalog and a couple of "reset" programs (WinsockxpFix.exe, etc) with no luck. Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling XP? TIA, Pablo

• LinkSys router suddenly cannot get an IP address

  I have a linksys router WRT54G2 connected to a cable broadband. Just last week, everything was working perfectly - I would be able to connect my laptop to the internet using WiFi. However, starting last week, I suddenly lost my internet connection. At first I thought something was wrong with my ISP. However, when I tried connecting the cable directly to my laptop, I found out that there was no problem with the internet connection after all. It appears that it is only my router that cannot get IP address. I have already tried cloning my MAC address and reconfiguring my router using the setup CD, but nothing worked.
