Platform: Ubuntu 9.10
Disk Brand/model: WD My Book
The external hard disk suddenly unmounts after a while. I suspect it's due to it "sleeping" to save power.
I don't recall the problem having occurred before the upgrade to Karmic.
How can this be fixed?

Hi, all
I'm looking for a software which can keep track of my reading progress, like BookMarker for iPhone does. It should be able to keep my everyday reading progress for each book I'm reading, and it will be better if other functions like calculating total reading pace are supported.
So is there any similar software on Linux/Windows platform? Many thanks.
I was told that after ntfsresize (ntfs resize), the fdisk command needs to be run...
But how can it be run? What is the exact line?
In a book Knoppix Hacks, it seems to suggest needing some parameter except it is not using any in its example. Does any one know how?
Is the line:
sudo fdisk /dev/hda
all that's needed?
This is a part of that page:
I don't want iTunes on my laptop due to the stupidly bloated amount of system drivers and services it installs. Win7 offers XP mode which allows you to virtualise USB devices to the VM.
Does anyone know if I could install iTunes into XP Mode and sync to an iPhone that way, preferably bringing in an Outlook address book from the host machine as well.
Normally when I read a book I use a bookmark held horizontally under the current line I'm reading to help me keep my eyes on the right spot. When I read a PDF or other document on my computer I would like to be able to do the same thing, only with a line on the screen controlled by the up and down arrow keys. Any suggestions for an application which would do this? I'm a Ubuntu Linux user.
I'm currently backing up using WD My Book World network drive that supports Apple Time Machine.
I would like to copy some files from my old laptop backup.
However, my old backup isn't showing when you browse the time machine network drive, only the currently used machine is listed (I know there are 3 different backups).
How can I access those files not belonging to the currently used laptop?

I bought an audiobook on iTunes on my computer. Can I, using the same account, download the file onto my phone, via the iTunes app, without being charged again? Or do I have to sync? I'm afraid to try it, because I know if I am charged, Apple won't give me a re-fund, even though I've already purchased the book.
After downloading a kindle book, I can open Kindle for Mac app by clicking a button. How can I do some similar things? I mean, how can I open an app from Safari?
I've purchased a lightwedge book light (http://www.lightwedge.com/prod_original.html). It comes with a small clip that can be detached from the top of the device, and I don't really know what it's use is. Does anyone know?

I want to teach my son to be a strong PC user. I could try to strike out on my own for this, but I was wondering if there is a good online (or book based) course for this.
Like most kids, he's proficient with Google, YouTube, and Minecraft, but he's very curious, and I would like to teach him more. Even some basic excercises, like working with the file system would be good for him (i would need some help to not make it boring).
I know a few common patterns that seem to bedevil nearly every project at some point in its life cycle:
Inability to take outages
Third party components locking out upgrades
Non uniform environments
Lack of monitoring and alerting
Missing redundancy
Lack of Capacity
Poor Change Management
Too liberal or tight access policies
Organizational changes adversely blur infrastructure ownership
I was hoping there is some well articulated library of these anti-patterns summarized in a book or web site. I am almost positive that many organizations are learning through trial by fire methods. If not let's start one.
I want to learn more about the bittorrent way of file sharing. I am a technically advanced user (programmer), so technically advanced material is no problem, but it should be concise and to the point. I need a good resource book/web which explains the overall bittorrent architecture.
I am not interested in details, just the overall architecture and the terminology like seeds, peers, etc.
Any suggestions?
The wireless internet on my Mac became extremely slow recently on my 27" IMac. I don't recall doing anything different other than doing the Apple Software updates which I let it pop up and install automatically. On my Mac Book internet is still fine so I don't think it's the model or the router.
I'm not sure where to start digging the cause of this or how to solve it. Looking into the System Preferences on my IMac, it's pretty identical to my MacBook!
I have a couple of ebooks as PDFs with passwords, however my ebook reader (sony prs600) doesn't seem to support PDFs with passwords. What is the easiest of removing the password from a PDF (I know the password, which presumably helps a lot). It's a bit annoying buying a book and then only being able to read it in front of a computer.
Hello guys,
I am setting up subversion using this link http://svn.spears.at/ It says that
"As the Subversion book warns, make sure to create all repositories on your local disks [FiberChannel is treated as a local disk]. Failing to do so, may result in repository corruption. " This us a big problem for me. Isnt there a way I can set subversion on shared drives. Is there a work around because availability is a major concern with local drives.
I've read all the available documentation, the Mastering OpenLDAP book, and like a zillion mail-list posts but I haven't found a way to make such scenario possible. I see several use cases for this scenario like an enterprise application syncing all users from the main LDAP of the Org but keeping it's own application related schemas and objects in its server.
So please, could you point me in the right direction or help me discard the possibility at all?
On Windows, if I want to enjoy a rtf book, I use MS word and use the full screen reading view.
What is a similar/inexpensive solution on the mac.
Thanks
We use a Windows 2003 server and XP stations.
The server's LDAP is working ok, as I am able to retrieve the addresses it contains with Thunderbird.
I'd like to be able to ADD an address to the server's book (the address of a new contact that freshly wrote me, for example) directly from Thunderbird, but that doesn't seem possible.
What can I do ?
In TCP Connection Termination, when client enters in TIME_WAIT state means the client waits for a period of time equal to double the maximum segment life (MSL) time, to ensure the ACK it sent was received.
(I read above from a book computer networking by kurose and also given in following URL http://www.tcpipguide.com/free/t_TCPConnectionTermination-2.htm )
But how it was detected if last ACK(send by client as a response to server FIN) lost?
I got a AT&T compatible Nexus One that I'm trying to connect to my Mac Book Pro (Snow Leopard) for development. When I do an adb devices, it doesn't appear, and I can't do an adb install either. Until today, I've been using a G1 and I haven't had any issues. I haven't placed a SIM in the phone yet, but I don't think that should matter.
Hello,
I am trying to search for a book that would teach me how to choose web server HW requirements (hard disk space/technology, ram, internet connection) based on web site statistics (requests per second, etc...), how to scale webservers in case my website is getter higher traffic, etc
All I get from the internet is software-related articles. Does anyone know how I can dig in for this kind of information? May be I am just searching using the wrong keywords.
Thanks
