• Map tiling - What kind of projection?

  Hi. I've taken a large image and divided it in to square tiles (256x256). It is made for google maps also, so the whole image is divided into z_x_y.png (Depending on zoom level). z=0 = 1x1 tile z=1 = 2x2 tilesthe z=2 = 4x4 tiles My imageMap is "flat" and is not based on a sphere like the worldmap. I'm gonna use this map on a windows mobile app (which has no google API), and all the "points of interests" is inserted into a database by longitude and latitude. And since i have to make this for the windows mobile, i just have XY coordinate system. Is it enough to just use this: MAP_WIDTH = 256*TILES_W; MAP_HEIGHT = 256*TILES_H; function convert(int lat, int lon) { int y = (int)((-1 * lat) + 90) * (MAP_HEIGHT / 180); int x = (int)(lon + 180) * (MAP_WIDTH / 360); ImagePoint p = new ImagePoint(x,y); // An object which holds the coordinates return p; } Or do i need a projection technique? • "Illegal characters in path." Visual Studio WinForm Design View

  I am putting together a lightweight MVP pattern for a WinForms project. Everything compiles and runs fine. However when I attempt to open the WinForm in design mode in Visual Studio I get a "Illegal characters in path" error. My WinForm is using generics and inheriting from a base Form class. Is there a problem with using generics in a WinForm? • C# - Layout problem on Windows XP professional

  I am developing a C# application with .NET Framework 2.0. The problem is, that on my client's PC, the controls get expanded, layout changes (positions of the controls gets changed), sometimes buttons get missed entirely. It happens even on Forms with 2-3 TextBoxes, 2-3 Buttons and some Labels. I tried a lot of investigations. I tried to show a message in the form's resize event. But it doesn't get called. After digging a bit more, it seemed that in Designer.cs file even though ResumeLayout (false) is being called for the form, but this causes the the expansion/disposition of the controls. My Client is using Windows XP professional on his Dell laptop. He is able to reproduce the issue on other laptops with Windows XP professional. But not in other OSes (like Windows XP Home or Windows Vista). In my desktop with Windows XP professional, it is not reproducible. How can this issue be resolved?

  I am having an issue calling a RESTful service from my client code. I have written the RESTful service using CXF/Jackson, deployed to localhost, and tested using RESTClient successfully. However, when I attempt to call this service from Java Script, I get the error below on the server side: Caused by: org.codehaus.jackson.JsonParseException: Unexpected character ('m' (code 109)): expected a valid value (number, String, array, object, 'true', 'false' or 'null') I have copied the client side code below. To make sure it has nothing to do with the JSON data itself, I used a valid JSON string (which works using RESTClient, JSON.parse() method, and JSONLint) in the vars 'json' (string) and 'jsonData' (JSON). • asyncsocket Write Issue

  I am attempting to use asyncsocket to communicate GPS data from a server app on my iPhone to a client app on my macbook. The two devices connect without any problems, and when the first data is sent from the iPhone to the laptop in asyncsocket's didConnectToHost method, the data is sent without hiccup. When I subsequently try to write additional data to the laptop from the locationManager method, however, no data is written. • Overlay only draws between first 2 points in Android

  Hi, I am experiencing an unusual error using ItemizedOverlay in Android. I am creating a GPS tracking device that plots a route between waypoints stored in a database. • Cannot find symbol - variable

  I'm new to Java, and I'm trying to get user input, store each line of input as a variable and then return each value so that it can be passed on somewhere else. When I try and compile it is telling me that it can't find the variable magnitude. I'm assuming it won't find the others either. I'm guessing that this is because I've declare the variables inside of the "try" but don't know how to get it so that the return statement accepts them. • 3 or 4 monitors with Nvidia and Ubuntu

  I saw that you are (were?) running 4 monitors with Ubuntu 8.10 and two Nvidia cards (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27113/how-to-use-3-monitors). I was curious if you were doing this with Xinerama, a hacked up TwinView config, or multiple X screens, or some other method? Does it work with compiz? I intend to run my Dell 30" in the middle with two 1280x1024 on the sides and continue to use one X screen, and run compiz, on Ubuntu 9.04. Currently, I am using 2 monitors with twinview and compiz, which runs fantastic. I just can't get the third monitor running (unless I enable it in its own X screen, and then enable Xinerama to enable windows to be dragged as if all one X screen, but this breaks compiz, and I don't care much for having separate X screen). I am very interested in knowing how you set up 4 monitors with 2 GPU's. Thanks!

  Is there a service that provides latitude and longitude for UK phone numbers? For example: Query: 0141 574 xxx, Returns: (55.8659829, -4.2602205) [Glasgow City Centre] Allow me to stress that I am not looking for a reverse-directory-enquires. I am more interested in 'local area' for things like weather by phone or "Where's my nearest Pizza Shop?" If this service doesn't exist your suggestions on how to implement it or where to get data from would also be incredibly useful. I am aware that Ofcom provides a list of area codes with a place name [1] suitable for geolocation, but I have my concerns about resolution. I see this as a particular problem in smaller towns and rural areas where an area code will cover a large geographical area. Second Example: Area Code: 01555, Ofcom: Lanark However: 01555 860xxx is Crossford (4 miles W of Lanark) 01555 77xxxx is Carluke (5 miles NW) 01555 89xxxx is Lesmahagow (5 miles SW) 01555 840xxx is Carnwath (7 miles NE) Therefore 01555 covers about ~80 sq miles. • Where has my parallel port gone? ioperm(888,1,1) returns -1.

  I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?

• Is it just me? I find LINQ to XML to be sort of cumbersome, compared to XPath.

  I am a C# programmer, so I don't get to take advantage of the cool XML syntax in VB. Dim itemList1 = From item In rss.<rss>.<channel>.<item> _ Where item.<description>.Value.Contains("LINQ") Or _ item.<title>.Value.Contains("LINQ") Using C#, I find XPath to be easier to think about, easier to code, easier to understand, than performing a multi-nested select using LINQ to XML. Look at this syntax, it looks like Greek swearing: var waypoints = from waypoint in gpxDoc.Descendants(gpx + "wpt") select new { Latitude = waypoint.Attribute("lat").Value, Longitude = waypoint.Attribute("lon").Value, Elevation = waypoint.Element(gpx + "ele") != null ? waypoint.Element(gpx + "ele").Value : null, Name = waypoint.Element(gpx + "name") != null ? waypoint.Element(gpx + "name").Value : null, Dt = waypoint.Element(gpx + "cmt") != null ? waypoint.Element(gpx + "cmt").Value : null }; All the casting, the heavy syntax, the possibility for NullPointerExceptions. None of this happens with XPath. I like LINQ in general, and I use it on object collections and databases, but my first go-round with querying XML led me right back to XPath. Is it just me? Am I missing something? EDIT: someone voted to close this as "not a real question". But it is a real question, stated clearly. The question is: Am I misunderstanding something with LINQ to XML?

• Visual Artifacts in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm using VS 2010 on Windows Server 2003, running on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. VS 2010 runs fine, except for persistent and random screen re-drawing issues. Samples of these are here. These artifacts occur as the mouse moves over items that highlight on a mouse-over event, while scrolling, and when switching tabs. VS 2008 has non of these issues, so I assume that it is related to VS 2010's use of WPF. Could it be that my video card or driver is not up to the task of rendering WPF? Some other WPF applications (not Silverlight) also have some of these screen repainting problems. I have tried a variety of settings in System Properties--Advanced--Performance Options--Visual Effects, and in the related "Advanced" tab, Processor Scheduling is adjusted for best performance of programs. • ::LookupAccountSid API Extremely Slow When Targetting x64 Platform (Windows 7)

  During our application startup, we are making a call to ::LookupAccountSid(). When I build targetting the x86 architecture, this call is nearly instantaneous. However, when I target x64 (debug or release), the call generally takes over 40s to complete. Since this is occurring during application startup, the result is fairly unpleasant as it will appear to the user that the application is not launching. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 (Intel Core i7 Q 720). Our application is a native Windows application written in C++. • Core data setReturnsDistinctResult not working

  So i'm building a small application, it uses core data database of ~25mb size with 4 entities. It's for bus timetables. In one table named "Stop" there are have ~1300 entries of bus stops with atributes "name", "id", "longitude", "latitude" and couple relationships. Now there are many stops with same name but different coordinates and id. Search is implemented using NSPredicate. So I want to show all distinct stop names in table view, i'm using setReturnsDistinctResults with NSDictionaryResultType and setPropertiesToFetch. But setReturnsDistinctResult is not working and I'm still getting all entries. So I decided to port it to python because I wanted to use SqlAlchemy to do some other stuff. I first ported it without the deepcopy statements that now pepper the method, and this caused the results to be 'odd', or partially incorrect, because some of the points were just getting copied as references(I guess? I think?) -- but it was still pretty nearly as fast as the C version. Now with the deepcopy calls added, the routine does it's job correctly, but it has incurred an extreme performance penalty, and now takes several seconds to do the same job. This seems like a pretty common job, but I'm clearly not doing it the pythonic way. How should I be doing this so that I still get the correct results but don't have to include deepcopy everywhere?

• How do I utilize REST to post GPS data from an Android device into a Ruby on Rails application?

  I am a student in the process a building an Android app that can post a GPS track into a Rails application. I would like to do things the "Rails" way and take advantage of the REST. My rails application basically has 3 models at this point: users, tracks, and points. A user has_many tracks and a track has_many points. A track also has a total distance. Points have a latitude and longitude. I have successfully been able to create an empty track with: curl -i -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/xml' -d '<track><distance>100</distance></track>' http://localhost:3000/users/1/tracks Whoo hoo! That is pretty cool. I am really impressed that rails do this. Just to see what would happen I tried the following: curl -i -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/xml -d '<track><distance>100</distance><points><point><lat>3</lat><lng>2</lng></point></points></track>' http://localhost:3000/users/1/tracks Fail! Is there anyway I can fix TracksController.create so that it will be able to parse xml of a track with nested multiple points? Or is there another way I should be doing this entirely?

• Web App Server hardware question. Which configuration?

  I am pricing some new servers and I am not sure which configuration to get. The server will be running some web applications for our company. Some of them are ASP.Net sites and some are ColdFusion. The OS will be Win Server 2008 Web or Standard Edition. Do I need 2 processors or will a single quad core handle it? Xeon multi core Hyperthreading or non Hyperthreading? I am going 64bit so I can go higher than 4 Gigs of Ram. I am shopping at Dell and there are so many options, i do not want to get too much hardware and not use half of it because that would be a waste of money and I do not want to get too little and have to ask for more money to upgrade it later.

• How do I place another attribute to a MKAnnotation?

  for my app each annotation on a map corresponds to a mine locality. each mine has its own unique 7 digit integer identifier. I'm trying to add the property minesEntryNumber to the annotation so when the annotation is clicked on later I can bring up specific information on the selected annotation. It loads the map and shows the annotations. however when I try and put this in it brings up an error. So how do I add this property to each annotation and how do I access it later in a different .m file?

• Check which nodes of Beowulf HPC cluster system are free from PHP app?

  I am working on my diploma thesis project. I have access to 32Node Dell poweredge HPC cluster system with Linux(Debian i think) installed on it. My first goal is to create web (PHP) app where logged users could see free and busy nodes, turn them on and off. I am planning to do something like this - write some cron daemon that would run every 30seconds or other interval, and it could run ping utility for each node to find out if it is on or off, then write results to some file. Then from my web app i could read the info. Will it be a good solution? What existing for node management solutions are there?

When inserted any PVC card with no chip or AT24C01 card, it would not choke but report immediate PowerUp failure. When I tried it on Windows(Windows 7, "runas other user", smartcard login), it chokes too while PVC cards and AT24C01 report immediate failure.
