• How Two Programs Can Talk To Each Other In Java?

  My first time here... I want to ?reduce? the CPU usage/ROM usage/RAM usage - in general ?speaking?, all system resources that my App use - how doesn't? :) For this reason i want to split the preferences window from the rest of the application, and let the preferences window to run as ?independent? program. The preferences program ?should? write to a Property file(not a problem at all) and to send a "update signal" to the main program - which mean, to call the update method(that i wrote) that found in the Main class. How can i call the update method in the Main program from the preferences program? Or in the other hand... There is a way to build preferences window that take system resources just when it's appear? Is this approach - of separating programs and let them talk to each other(somehow) - is a right approach for speeding up my programs? tnx

• Accessing a JavaScript object property names with a "-" in it

  I have a requirement to read JSON data in my application. Problem is that the JSON data that I am getting from the service includes "-" and when I am trying to read it, I am getting "Uncaught ReferenceError: person is not defined ". e.g. I have below JSON object- var JSONObject ={ "name-person":"John Johnson", "street":"Oslo West 16", "age":33, "phone":"555 1234567"}; when I am writing below console log statement I am getting "Uncaught ReferenceError: person is not defined " error console.log(JSONObject.name-person); Can someone please help me how to read such data which includes "-" in it? I do not have control on the service and the DB so to modify source data is not in my hand.

• .NET Database application guidance.

  Hello, I'm stumbling in the data wilderness and feel very lost, so i am asking for help. I have done some database apps in VS (C#) winforms for some time, wpf lately. These are small to medium apps (embedded dbs, a bit of sql server), like a restaurants, cash registers and similar. (15-20 tables) Until now, i have done all my datasets by drag and drop in Visual Studio designer. I spent weeks on web trying to find some complete solution how to write complete solution with typed datasets by hand from scratch (DAL, B.Objects) in hope to learn some architecture patterns along the way, but without success. So, finally question. Can someone recommend me what to learn for this type of applications, maybe move away from datasets , use some ORM ( maybe overkill, i dont know). Point me in some direction please.

• How communicate with pty via minicom or screen?

  I am trying to provide an AT/Modem-like interface around some hardware. Follwing this post I have the server setting up a pty using openpty(). Now I can communicate with the server as expected with a client app that open the slave and communicates via read() and write() calls. However I would also like to be able to use either the screen command or minicom to issue commands by hand to the slave. However the server never seems to receive any data when trying to do this. Is there something significant I am missing with this approach?

  Can a bookmarklet be used to overlay an image on a web page? Not as a pop-up, but as a image positioned by CSS and with a high z-index to display on top of other elements. And without a mask i.e., Shadowbox or similar jQuery effect. Just an image from a URL and positioned in the bottom left hand corner of the browser window. This is what I have so far, but it may be the wrong direction to be going: javascript:(function(){document.write("body {background-image:url(http://mydomain.com/image.png); position: absolute; left:50px; top:300px; z-index:9999;}");})() I have a JS function that works as a bookmarklet to change the case of text on the page, and now I'd like to be able to show an image when the bookmarklet is used.

  I have 'div' element (recaptchaDiv) in knockout template which is not bound to any observable field: <div id="recaptchaDiv"></div> On the other hand, I update this 'div' by 3rd party library. In particular, this is google recaptcha. This is my code: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); And it doesn't work (I see nothing). What I know: trying on FF console: $("#recaptchaDiv").html() - it shows the expected html code, I just can't see it in the browser What I tried: to move recaptchaDiv outside of the template and it works: I can see the captcha in the browser to bind recaptchaDiv on html property: in the template: <div id="recaptchaDiv" data-bind="html: recaptcha"></div> in the model: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); recaptcha($("#recaptchaDiv").html()); and it doesn't work (replacing jquery on document.getElementById doesn't help) Any help will be very much appreciated!!!   As an example, here is a way to get a matrix of all possible outcomes of rolling 4 (fair) dice. z <- as.matrix(expand.grid(c(1:6),c(1:6),c(1:6),c(1:6))) As you may already have understood, I'm trying to work out a question that was closed, though, in my opinion, it's a challenging one. I used counting techniques to solve it (I mean by hand) and I finaly arrived to a number of outcomes, with a sum of subset being 5, equal to 1083 out of 1296. That result is consistent with the answers provided to that question, before it was closed. I was wondering how could that subset of outcomes (say z1, where dim(z1) = [1083,4] ) be generated using R. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.

• Lazy evaluation with ostream C++ operators

  I am looking for a portable way to implement lazy evaluation in C++ for logging class. Let's say that I have a simple logging function like void syslog(int priority, const char *format, ...); then in syslog() function we can do: if (priority < current_priority) return; so we never actually call the formatting function (sprintf). On the other hand, if we use logging stream like log << LOG_NOTICE << "test " << 123; all the formating is always executed, which may take a lot of time. Is there any possibility to actually use all the goodies of ostream (like custom << operator for classes, type safety, elegant syntax...) in a way that the formating is executed AFTER the logging level is checked ?

• C# - Adding to an existing (generated) constructor

  I have a constructor that is in generated code. I don't want to change the generated code (cause it would get overwritten when I regenerate), but I need to add some functionality to the constructor. Here is some example code: // Generated file public partial class MyGeneratedClass { public MyGeneratedClass() { Does some generated stuff } } The only solution I can come up with is this: // My hand made file public partial class MyGeneratedClass { public MyGeneratedClass(bool useOtherConstructor):this() { do my added functinallity } } I am fairly sure this will work, but I then have a lame unused param to my constructors and I have to go change them all. Is there a better way? If not that is fine, but I thought I would ask.

• Rails, different routes for production app.

  Well, maybe not just different routes. Here is the issue at hand, we have an app that we want to present the users with a "beta sign-up" form when the app is running in production, but we still want to be able to login, however in development the app should function normally. For example in development the app's root path would be the page that show's all the products (using a store as an example) but in production we want the app to present the user with a beta page that just has a form for leaving an email, but also be able to sign-in for users that have accounts. We don't need any help with authentication, that's all sorted out more just the setup of redirecting users to the beta page in production so they can't explore the site unless they are logged in. We are using Devise so I thought maybe we could put something in our application controller that's like: before_filter :authenticate_user! if ENV['RAILS_ENV'] == 'production' But that doesn't seem like it works.

• Is there a cap on the number of modules WinDbg can see?

  Does anyone know if there is a cap on the number of DLLs WinDbg can see ? I believe Visual Studio was once capped at 500 but I can't find a source for this claim outside of some second hand accounts at work. I'm trying to debug a hairy scenario and WinDbg's stack trace is incomplete. According to Process Explorer, the module I'm interested in is loaded but it doesn't show up in the output of 'lm' in WinDbg. Suspiciously, said output is exactly 500 modules long, even though I know there are many more than that loaded, leading me to believe WinDbg isn't seeing DLLs beyond the first 500. Can anyone confirm ? Or suggest some other reason why a loaded module might not show up in 'lm' ?

• Parantheses around method invokation: why is the compiler complaining about assignment?

  I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parantheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

  Hi all I've inherited a Joomla 1.5 site and I am trying to find a Joomla component that will let me add a signup/prizedraw page where people can also recommend the compo to a friend in the one form. Basically 1 - email to go out to our existing database asking them to recommend a friend for the chance to win x prize 2 – they are directed to the form on the website where they enter their details for the prize draw and also have the option to enter a few friends email addresses 3 – the recommender is entered into the draw (signed up), while the recommended friends get a princes square email saying ‘you have been recommended by....to receive exclusive offers etc etc.. click here to enter.   I am defining naming conventions for a simple plugin framework. For example: index.php - the main plugin file info.php - returns an array with plugin information install.php - self-explanatory can you think of an elegant, short-hand name for a PHP file that contains the code that is to be executed before any HTML is output? Do any examples from other frameworks come to your mind? What I have been thinking of: head.php - misleading, could be mixed up with HTML <head> before_output.php - clumsy, too long init.php - not exactly correct start.php - current favourite

  I've seen some limited resources on checking for cookies with Nginx, but I couldn't really find the answer I was looking for, hopefully some of you Nginx masters can give me a hand. • To be a lazy developer or not to be a lazy developer?

  Am I a lazy developer? Is it being lazy to use automated tools, such as code generators and such? Now, I could, if I had to, create all the data layers and entities I needed, but I choose to use CodeSmith to generate my datalayers and entities. I also use Resharper and I would say it fights with MSDeploy as to which gets installed first after Visual Studio. Again if I had to, I could code without it, but prefer not to. Both these tools from my point of view are no brainers as they improve output massively. But is this lazy? I'm sure there are purists out there that would say everything should be wirtten by you so you know what everything is doing, but if you can read through the code and see what is happening is that ok? So am I being lazy or am I just using all the cards in my hand?

• Writing iPhone apps on linux - What tools do you need

  Hello. I wanted to know if it's possible to WRITE and COMPILE/TEST iPhone apps on a linux platform. I've been on google for a couple of days now, and people either talk about "Mac OS X only!", or "Develop jailbroke apps on Linux". My dev partner has a mac and has a certificate to sign the apps. I don't have a mac, but I will be doing most of the development. So what I want to do is simply develop/test the app in linux, and when it's finished, simply hand over the code to him, who will then compile the finalized app and sign it ready for submission to the app store. Could anyone tell me what linux tools I would need to accomplish this?

• jquery disable rule validation on a single field

  I am using mvc to create forms that are generated at runtime. For validation, I am trying my hand at the jquery validation library which is very convenient to use. I have the validation expression of each field in the cdata attribute of the tag <input type="text" name="xyz" id="xyz" class="defaultTextBox" cdata="{validate:{required:true, decimal:true, messages: {required:'Please enter an decimal value', decimal:'Please enter a valid decimal'}}}"> This works beautifully. Now one more requirement I have is that some fields are being shown and hidden according to the logic on the page and I need to disable the validation on the hidden fields such that they do not interfere with the form submission. Just toggling the required:true to false and back to true should be enough. Only i do not know how. Anyone has any experience with that?

• Better data-structure design

  Currently in my application I have a single table that is giving me a bit of trouble. The issue at hand is I have a value object that is mapped to this table. When the data is returned to me as an array of value objects, I have to then loop through this array and begin my recursion by matching the ParentID to parent ObjectID's. The column ParentID is either null (acts a parent) or it holds the value of an ObjectID. I know there has to be a better way to create this data structure so that I do not have to do recursive loops to match ParentID's with their ObjectID's. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. • Multiple-File Template Implementation

  With normal functions, the declaration and definition are often separated across multiple files like so: // Foo.h namespace Foo { void Bar(); } . // Foo.cpp #include "Foo.h" void Foo::Bar() { cout << "Inside function." << endl; } It is my understanding that this cannot be done with templates. The declaration and definition must not be separate because the appropriate form of the template is created "on-demand" when needed. So, how and where are templates typically defined in a multiple-file project like this? My intuition is that it would be in Foo.cpp because that's where the "meat" of functions normally is, but on the other hand it's the header file that's going to be included.
