• How to unload JVM from a living process?

  Hi, I'm working with JNI and trying to unload (destroy) the VM using DestoryJavaVM function (I first call DetachCurrentThread method). It seems like the it has now influence on the VM and it is still up after the call. I read in old Sun posts that DestoryJavaVM had problems in the past (JDK1.1-1.3 in 2001) but I'm using JRE 6 and it probably should work now, right? I need to Load\Unload a VM in the same living process since each loading requires another classes to load. Any ideas how it can be done? Thanks, Guy

• How to run a .class file in Windows 7 OS?

  Hi, This is probably a stupid question, but how do I run a class file on windows 7? I usually create my own .java files and then use a basic IDE (with JDK6) to compile it to a class and run it automatically. My professor gave a .class file that we are supposed to play with extensively but I have no idea how to to run it here. Note that I cannot run it by typing: java classname.class because it contains gui stuff especially buttons and such. • FTP - way to programatically determine time remaining or bytes transfered?

  Hi all I want to make an FTP connection (ideally using Coldfusion 8, but Java is fine too) that will copy a file to a remote server. Crucially however, I want to know how many bytes have been transferred so I can give some feedback to the user. Is this possible, and if so what FTP API would you recommend as I understand the Sun implementation may be a bit lacking. Thanks in advance! PS: I could have another process/thread poll the file size on the destination machine via a web service call while the file is being transferred but it's not ideal. Getting it through FTP API would be the neatest solution.

  Hi, My friends and I are starting a new project and we are shifting from windows to linux (for some reasons) and all of us are .Net background. for the new platform I decided to go with Java since many parts are similar with .Net but my friend is insisting on C++ saying it is much faster very mature and working with it will not effect on the productivity and development speed. The project that we will work on it will have threading, extensive string and datetime manipulation, some socket programing and of-course work with RDBMS (MySql Or Postgre not decided yet). I have some fears with java since oracle acquired sun and these people will do anything to make money out of it. some have advised in python and ruby and I like python but don't know should I make it the default language in this project. the project is not web application and we will make services and executables. what do you think, if you have other opinion you very welcome. Hint: Mono is not an option

• Log4J - Speed of resolving class/method/line references

  Does log4J still gather the class, method and line numbers by generating exceptions and inspecting the stack trace? Or has Java been optimized since Sun included their own logging framework. If not, why has there not been any optimizations made since. What is the main challenges in obtaining class, method and line numbers quickly and efficiently? Although I hate annotations and try to avoid them, has log4J not made use of this, such as: @log4j-class MyClass @log4j-method currentMethodOne At least this would avoid some companies bad habit of repeatedly writing/copying the method name as the first part of their logging message (which is seriously annoying).   For the past several years we have slowly built an Access-based front end to access our InformixSE database (unix). Our Sun server will be shut down in a couple of months and I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive solution for porting over the remainder of our old ".per" screens to a Windows-based solution. And even for the screens that have been reprogrammed, there's nothing that beats being able to query any field on the screen like you could with those simple-to-get-up-and-running Informix "Perform" screens. Does anyone have experience with a solution?

  Hello everyone, In my code, all of the scripts are contained in .js files. Whenever one of the scripts contains an error, I get this: javax.script.ScriptException: sun.org.mozilla.javascript.internal.EcmaError: ReferenceError: "nonexistant" is not defined. (<Unknown source>#5) in <Unknown source> at line number 5 What bugs me is the <Unknown Source>. Multiple files are in one ScriptContext, and it can be hard to track down an error. It also looks horrible. Is there a way to replace <Unknown Source> with the actual file name? None of the methods I see support passing a File object, so I'm really confused here.

  I'm still investigating issues I have with GC tuning (see prior question), which involves lots of reading and experimentation. Sun Java5+ JVMs attempt to automatically select the optimal GC strategy and parameters based on their environment, which is great, but I can't figure out how to query the running JVM to find out what those parameters are. Ideally, I'd like to see what values of the various GC-related -XX options are being used, as selected automatically by the VM. If I had that, I could have a baseline to begin tweaking. Anyone know to recover these values from a running VM?

  I was looking a snipset of code: int* ip; ip = new int[100]; delete ip; The example above states that: "This code will work with many compilers, but it should instead read:" int* ip; ip = new int[100]; delete [] ip; Is this indeed the case? I use the compiler "Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 11.00.7022 for 80x86" and does not complain (first example) while compiling. At runtime the pointer is set to NULL. Other compilers behave diferrently? Can a compiler not compain and issues can appear at runtime? Thanks, Sun

  Hi, I am a little bit frustrated of how to use vectors in C++. I use them widely though I am not exactly certail of how I use them. Below are teh questions? If I have a vector lets say: std::vector<CString> v_strMyVector, with (int)v_strMyVector.size > i can I access the i member: v_strMyVector[i] == "xxxx"; ? (it works, though why?) Do i always need to define an iterator to acces to go to the beginning of the vector, and lop on its members ?   In some interfaces i wrote I'd like to name generic type parameter with more than one character to make the code more readable. Something like.... Map<Key,Value> Instead of this... Map<K,V> But when it comes to methods, the type-parameters look like java-classes which is also confusing. public void put(Key key, Value value) This seems like Key and Value are classes.
