  • Web service access fails when users password is in warning period

    We have a number of locally installed .Net apps that communicate via web services. Authentication in IIS is handled by Windows Authentication so no additional login is required. We recently began seeing a problem where users are getting a application 403 error when there password is 14 days (or less) from expiring. As this sometime happens in the the middle of the day (login in the morning OK, but password reaches <14 days during the day), this comes as a surprise as they haven't been warned to change their password. Of course, one would expect they should be able to work until the password is expired. Any idea on what could be happening here? Why would IIS reject a login if the passsword hasn't actually expired?   • Running MySQL as SYSTEM Service in Windows XP

    I have this strange problem where I create a database in MySQL and I need to restart mysqld but I can't seem to do it with info the MySQL docs. Then, I kill it from the Task Manager and I can't restart it. When I look at the process, it is run by the SYSTEM, rather than me. When I run mysqld it starts the process by me, not the SYSTEM. Am I shutting it down incorrectly? IS there a way to start this daemon as the SYSTEM?

  • Can not connect to service with my public IP, only with localhost

    I have installed Linux Mint 8 (based on ubuntu). And I have setup a webserver on port 8098. I can connect to my webserver with http://127.0.0.1:8098, but when I try to connect to http://192.168.1.107:8098 from the same machine or another machine it doesn't work. How can I get this working? Is there any default firewall settings that I have to change?

  • Remote access to server via service control panel for non-admin user in Windows 2008

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

  • A failed disk (Pay for professional service or SpinRite?)(new edit)

    EDIT: After much negotiating and begging and seeing through promotion smoke screen, thanks to the nice representative who took my case, I now know that the engineer has already fixed my NTFS partition (I guess it might be a bad block in the partition table?). She told me that the problem was considered minor, and I should be able to boot normally and just copy stuff out. Whew..I'm glad I didn't agree to the NTD $16,000 deal. New question (should this be in a new thread?): is it safer to use the linux "dd" command or is it better to boot normally into Windows XP and just copy stuff out? EDIT2: Thanks to all the help. But many suggestion are helpful and informational. ---- ORIGINAL POST BELOW --- Hi, in my previous post (You don't need to read but it's at http://superuser.com/questions/48838/windows-xp-a-disk-read-error-occurred), I said that my hard disk was not booting and is showing "a disk read error occurred". I took it to a recovery professional. A representative responded today told me that the NTFS partitions have a "NTFS partition system crash". I have no idea what that means. The engineer handling my drive will not be available for contact till tomorrow. Now the company charges me NTD (New Taiwan Dollar) $16,000 to recover lost data, that's kind of a lot considering that my graduate student monthly stipend is currently NTD $32,000 (max. allowed by regulation, may be lower, may change depend on funding). Now I'm weighting in between the options. Option A: let the professional recovers it with the half of my monthly stipend. If file/directories I designated are not recovered I don't pay a penny. (other than the initial examination fee of NTD $1000 which I've already paid.) Option B: let me try SpinRite, if failed, back to Option A. I spoke to the representative at the company they recommended me not to handle it on my own (yeah of course that's what they all want to say, right?), and at the price tag the disk error is probably relatively minor and data recoverable. But the representative really did not have detailed information of the disk failure so I didn't take her recommendation readily. Though one thing I heed was that she said that what they would do is to duplicate the disk before attempting discovery, so there would be no data loss (Is this true? can't duplicating invoke further data loss?). That sounds very good to me. Or maybe a third option: Option C: Negotiate with them to pay them to duplicate the disk hopefully for a much smaller price tag. Let me try SpinRite, if failed, back to Option A. This is a difficult decision. Ultimately I want my data back, but if a cheaper way is available to achieve the same thing... Can operating with SpinRite also corrupt data in someway? I've no idea what happened to my drive. I'll attempt to contact the engineer and hope to get it clarified and make an edit here.

  • Mac OS X Services: enable without user interaction?

    I wrote a simple Mac 'Service' for Finder, that executes a command. Basically: this adds a ContextMenu in Finder. If I right-click a file in Finder, a menu item pops up. If the user clicks it, it executes my script. (kind of like 'Send to Bluetooth device, ...') In OS X Leopard (10.5) and earlier, all services are enabled. In 10.6 (Snow Leopard), Apple changed the behavior, services now have preferences, and can be enabled or disabled by the user. (which is a good thing) However, I wrote the service, but there seems to be no way to enable it automatically (in our installer). I tried doing it with Applescript, going to the System Preferences and ticking the checkbox that way, but it requires some accessibility features to be turned on. (off by default). Is it possible? If so, how? Or do I need something else to provide Context Menus in Finder.

  • Setting WCF service for multiple client calls

    Hi all, I have made a WCF service which is defined like this: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single, ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Multiple)] binding is done using netTcpBinding. We support 50+ clients that call the server from time to time. Each client opens a channel using channelfactory once it is loaded and uses that channel for all calls (creates the channel and proxy only once). we have built a small load tester that imitates the client by calling the server by 50 different threads at once (using 50 different channels). when we run this tester, after the 10th client tries to connect, all other client fail connecting. We have set throttling to 100. My questions are: 1. is it correct for each client to create a channel and use it through the client life time? or, do i need to use a using statement for each call to the server (create and distroy a new channel for each call). 2. does the service have a limit of channel connections to it? other then throttling? thanks alot, Guy.

  • Reload mod_fcgid without killing Python Service

    Hi I'm currently running a Django project on my school's webserver with FCGI. I did follow the multiple guides that recommends installing a virtual local Python environment and it worked out great. The only issue i had was that "touching" my fcgi-file to reload source-files wasn't enough, but instead i had to kill the python service via SSH. This because mod_fcgid is used. However, the admin didn't think it was a great idea that i ran my own local python. He thought it better if i just told him what modules to install on root, which was a pretty nice service really. But doing this, i can no longer kill python since it's under root(though immoral as I am, I've definitely tried). The admins recommendation was that I should try too make the fcgi script reload itself by checking time stamp. I've tried to find documentation on how to do this, but fund very little and since I'm a absolute beginner i have no idea what would work. Anyone have experience running python/django under mod_fcgid or tips on where to find related guides/documentation?

    I'm looking for a tool where I can list the servers to check, the location of the file and it would return a list of the most common errors across those servers (say like 2 or 3 servers for report brevity) and get a report something like this Server.A Server.B Server.C -------- -------- -------- 42 error.X 39 error.X 61 error.X 21 error.Y 7 error.Y 5 error.A 17 error.B 6 error.A 4 error.Y 4 error.A 2 error.R 3 error.S 3 error.R 1 error.S 1 error.R Of course, excluding timestamps and other error details and just grepping out the common sub-strings and listing them like so. I'd be able to look at the table and see that error.B is unique to Server.A and conclude that there is something up with Server.A. Does something like this already exist? Is this something I'll have to code myself? I'm not necessarily looking for this specific report, just the functionality to find unique errors across a set of error logs.

    I have on my home Windows box - Cassini server with localhost:10000. And I want it be accessible in internet by my static IP. Tried netcat, "nc -l -p 10001 localhost 10000". But it results in "invalid connection to [IP] from [IP] 16074" Also before that it was working on Opera Unite properly, but now only writes a message: "An error occured. See error log for details". I dont know where to get that log.

I created a proxy using svcutil “svcutil.exe http://localhost:8000/ServiceModelSamples/FreeServiceWorld?wsdl” It generated an output.config file and proxy class. The output.config has the following element <client> <endpoint address="http://localhost:8000/ServiceModelSamples/FreeServiceWorld" binding="wsHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="WSHttpBinding_IWeather" contract="IWeather" name="WSHttpBinding_IWeather"> <identity> <servicePrincipalName value="host/D471DTRV.ustr.com" /> </identity> </endpoint> </client> I created a website (as client) and added a new C# file (MyFile.cs) into it. I copied the contents of the proxy class into MyFile.cs. [The output.config is not copied to the web site] In the code behnid of aspx, I am using the following code WeatherClient client= new WeatherClient("WSHttpBinding_IWeather"); It throws an exception as “Could not find endpoint element with name 'WSHttpBinding_IWeather' and contract 'IWeather' in the ServiceModel client configuration section.” Could you please help me to understand the missing link here?   • Which "platform" should we use for a notifier-component?

    Hi all We need to develop a notifier component. What it will do, is to scan a database at given intervals (say, every 15th minute), to see if any notifications needs to be sent out. We're running on Windows, and so we've been looking into either a Windows Service or the Windows Task Scheduler. Our biggest concern is the robustness of our implementation. If it, for some reason, crashes, can it be auto-restarted the next interval? Can we use custom logging logic, to take care of crashes? I'd like an educated guess on what to use here :) Feel free to say if you need additional info, to make such a guess.. Props will be given if someone could make a short listing of the pros n cons of a windows service vs. the windows task scheduler. Also, it should be noted, that we aren't set on either of these, so if you have any alternatives, please, do post away. Thanks in advance :)

    Hi my college has a HP color printer that can be used to print both A3 and A4 size color printouts. It is connected to a windows 2008 print server. The windows event viewer provides the status of printouts using event id 307. I would like to know if it is possible to find out if an A3 page was printed or A4 page was printed. Is this information also logged in windows event viewer. Or is there any other event id that captures this information. Also the number of copies printed should be captured in event id 805. I have read in some forums that sometimes the value is wrong. Please provide me some information on this. Thanks in advance.

    I download and listen to podcasts on 2 different computers. I would like so somehow sync the metadata such that, when I subscribe to a feed it gets subscribed on my other computer also. When I've downloaded a podcast it gets marked as downloaded on the other machine also. Is there a software + webservice combination that will allow me to do this. That will save its doings to the cloud and update it also? My one machine is Windows and the other one Linux.

  • How to configure my web server for public and development service

    I have one and only one web server, which runs Windows Server 2008 and wamp. Now I would like to setup SVN on the server so I can program the trunk version of the website. Every time I branch a version and put it to public. While developing on the trunk version, I also want to be able to test it. The web server has 5 IPs so I can use one IP for public website(the branch) and another IP for trunk development test. I believe one wamp server can only handle one 80 port request thus can only handle one website. How can I configure the server so it can handle one IP request and direct to my branch and handle another IP request and direct to my trunk?

  • Are workflows good for web service business logic?

    I have a series of complex web services that are getting used in my SOA application. I am generally happy with the overall design of the application, but as the complexity grows, I was wondering if Windows Workflow might be the way to go. My motivations for this are that you can get a graphic representation of the applications functionality, so it would be easier to maintain the code by its business function, rather than what I have now ( a standard 3 tier class library structure). My concerns are: I would be inducing an abstraction in my code, and I don't want to spend time having to deal with possible WF quirks or bugs. I've never worked with WF, is it a solid technology? I don't want to hit any WF limitations that prevent me from developing my solution. Is a WF even the right solution for the task? Simply put I am considering writing my next web service in this app to call a WF, and in this work flow manage the tasks the web service needs to carry out. I think it will be much neater and easier to maintain than a regular c# class library (maintainable by namespaces, classes ). Do you think this is the right thing to do? I'm hoping for positive feedback on WF (.net 4), but brutal honestly at the end of the day would help more. Thanks

  • Upstart multiple instances of service not working.

    I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'?     I have a java program that I use to automate the process of creating VPN settings for clients. The program calls couple of bash scripts, create and copies files around. I have to run it under root user because the whole VPN config is under /etc/openvpn. For this directory I need root privileges. On the same machine I have Glassfish application server and it will call the mentioned Java program. Glassfish is run under non-root user. What is the best, most secure way of running a program as a root user of course without entering a password if I run it via sudo?

I don't have a formal php training, but even for me it seems like an easy task, however when calling the service I get an 'Invalid Format' response.     We need to share large files with clients, e.g. clients upload a large file, we modify it and later make it available for download. Up until now we've used FTP but this has a number of drawbacks. A lot of management of files and setting up accounts etc. We are therefore considering online alternatives. Requirements: Cheap, 8-) Easy to use, ideally just requiring a web browser, but also possible for power users to connect e.g. via FTPS/SFTP No registration requried for users to upload/download files. We ourselves of course need to be able to login an view uploaded files and upload new files. No per user fee High bandwidth. As files may be GBs in size both upload and download speed cannot be too slow Secure. Encryption during upload/download. No way for users to access uploaded files. Once a user has uploaded a file they (or anyone else besides us) should be able to access the file. To download files users get a link with a password. Ideally the link expires after a set time. No software installation We do NOT need any sync features, backup, versioning etc. Just a quick, easy, secure way for us to share files with our clients. Services like JustCloud, DriveHQ etc seems bloated and "too much" for what we need. What other alternatives exist? Thanks!
