    I am trying to set the Text property of a drop down list option like this: <asp:ListItem Value="AB" Text='<%= Resources.Get("USA") %>'></asp:ListItem> But it isn't working, instead the Text value is literally <%= Resources.Get("USA") %> and not the string "USA". i.e. it is not being interpreted as code. What is the problem?

    I have a question about using subqueries in an Update statement. My example: UPDATE TRIPS SET locations = city + ', ' FROM (select Distinct city from poi where poi.trip_guid = trips.guid) Is it possible to refer to main table value (trips.guid) in subqueries? When i try to use trips.guid I get the error: "The multi-part identifier "trips.guid" could not be bound."

A user of this class has to set some properties and then use a public method to retrieve the results. What shall I do when a user calls the method without setting all the properties? Throw exception and expect the user to catch it? Thanks

  • naming a function that exhibits "set if not equal" behavior

    This might be an odd question, but I'm looking for a word to use in a function name. I'm normally good at coming up with succinct, meaningful function names, but this one has me stumped so I thought I'd appeal for help. The function will take some desired state as an argument and compare it to the current state. If no change is needed, the function will exit normally without doing anything. Otherwise, the function will take some action to achieve the desired state. For example, if wanted to make sure the front door was closed, i might say: my_house.<something>_front_door('closed') What word or term should use in place of the something? I'd like it to be short, readable, and minimize the astonishment factor. A couple clarifying points... I would want someone calling the function to intuitively know they didn't need to wrap the function an 'if' that checks the current state. For example, this would be bad: if my_house.front_door_is_open(): my_house.<something>_front_door('closed') Also, they should know that the function won't throw an exception if the desired state matches the current state. So this should never happen: try: my_house.<something>_front_door('closed') except DoorWasAlreadyClosedException: pass Here are some options I've considered: my_house.set_front_door('closed') my_house.setne_front_door('closed') # ne=not equal, from the setne x86 instruction my_house.ensure_front_door('closed') my_house.configure_front_door('closed') my_house.update_front_door('closed') my_house.make_front_door('closed') my_house.remediate_front_door('closed') And I'm open to other forms, but most I've thought of don't improve readability. Such as... my_house.ensure_front_door_is('closed') my_house.conditionally_update_front_door('closed') my_house.change_front_door_if_needed('closed') Thanks for any input!

    I need to create a Set of objects. The concern is I do not want to base the hashing or the equality on the objects' hashCode and equals implementation. Instead, I want the hash code and equality to be based only on each object's reference identity (i.e.: the value of the reference pointer). I'm not sure how to do this in Java. The reasoning behind this is my objects do not reliably implement equals or hashCode, and in this case reference identity is good enough.

    I'm working on a few animations with jQuery. I have 3-4 elements which should slide in from the top. I defined their positions with css: #element-1 { top:124px; left:0px; right:auto; bottom:auto; } #element-2 { top:230px; left:670px; right:auto; bottom:auto; } #element-3 { top:auto; left:0px; right:auto; bottom:100px; } Then I save their positions initial on pageload, cause i have to manipulate the css value to top: -1000px to hide them and make the "slide in from top" animation possible. var image_margins = []; $('img').each(function() { var obj = $(this), id = obj.attr('id'), mtop = obj.css('top'), mleft = obj.css('left'), mright = obj.css('right'), mbottom = obj.css('bottom'); // save alle margins in array image_margins[id] = {mtop:mtop,mleft:mleft,mright:mright,mbottom:mbottom}; // hide all content elements obj.css({'top':'-1000px'}); }); When the user clicks the animate button, the elements should slide to their saved positions. The problem: i can't remove the top attribute. Some elements only have bottom margins. I tried to set top to auto or '', but it's always 0px in DOM inspector. And bottom don't work if top is set.
