• Styled Javascript Popup that Connects to Database

  I want to create a javascript popup box that contains text fields. I want to be able to style this box - using CSS - and I want the textfield entries to be Inserted into a MySQL database. Is this possible? I would be familiar with doing this through web forms and server side scripting but I need it to be a bit more client side this time to make things seem a bit faster. I am thinking I may need to learn some AJAX but any pointers would be a help. GF

• is it safe to refactor my django models?

  My model is similar to this. Is this ok or should I make the common base class abstract? What are the differcenes between this or makeing it abstract and not having an extra table?   I'm developing silverlight app with WCF Ria service. I'm using MS SQL database and Entity Framework as ORM framework (Database first method). Model with domain service are in separate project - App1.Data. Silverlight and generated model proxy classes are in App1 project. I want to add property to model entity class EntityClass to get this property on client side. So I did it that way - added this class to project App1.Data: public partial class EntityClass { [DataMember] public List<EntityClass2> PropertyName {get; set;} } After rebuilding EntityClass proxy on client side doesn't have this new property. Where is my mistake?

  Suppose I have an application a search for all gas stations within 10 mile radius of a certain location. However one side of this location is surrounded by a mountain range that you have to drive 50 miles to get around. You would not want to return results from the other side of the mountain. What are some good algorithms/techniques to deal with such a problem? I know with point to point searches you can use path costs but I am not sure what the technique is with radius searches.

• Flash: How to dispatch a click event at the top of a loaded .swf?

  So I'm trying to build a tool that will allow me and other users to all open the same .swf, and then I as the Admin user am able to interact with mine while they all see my mouse movements and button clicks etc on theirs. I'm using BlazeDS to manage this and I'm getting data sent back and forth etc - no difficulties there. The issue I'm running into is this: In an "Admin" instance, I click a button. I capture that X and Y, then tell Blaze to tell my clients to dispatch a Click event at that X and Y. On my client side, I get that data and dispatch a Click event at that X and Y - but the click is actually caught at the stage level. The click on my client side takes place UNDER all of my buttons and other content - so the whole thing fails. Does this make sense? Is there a way to tell it to start the click event at the top?

  So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ? • JSONP parsing error from WCF

  Answered my own question I had a problem with a jquery (jsonp) call to a WCF service that was throwing a json parsing error. Using ASP.NET 4.0 on the WCF side and jquery 1.7 on the client side. Turned out there was an old set of script tags on the page using language = VBSCRIPT. The browser was interpreting the returned json packet of script as "VBscript" instead of javascript. I placed a set of empty javascript tags at the top of the page and the browser is now interpreting the json as the proper javascript function. Hope this helps someone else. Tom

  Hi, I can't seem to get the jQuery.ajax() function posting back any of my asp.net generated form controls. I've put a break point on the server side and there aren't any values. Is there a way around this or do I have to build up a list of what I want sent back? Another question slightly off topic, but it seems that although jQuery is a great JS library, it doesn't seem to integrate too well with .net. Has anyone given up with jQuery to perform server side interaction and just gone with ms ajax implementation?

  Not wishing to be subjective but I have a need to get data from an XML source and convert it to (X)HTML. From my understanding I can do this with PHP (or other server-side scripts), Javascript, or XSLT. My feeling is that it would be more appropriate to use XSLT as it is dealing with an XML source and this is the purpose for which XSLT exists. I also see it having the advantage that it will still work if the user doesn't have Javascript enabled and wont be restricted to a server which runs PHP (or other server-side script). Am I right in my assumptions? Also could the same be same for an RSS feed? Thanks

  Is it possible to validate a radio group (so something is checked off, or chosen) using server-side validation with Perl? If so, how? I already have it for JavaScript, but I want this form to be able to be submitted even without JavaScript enabled. Thus I will need the validation on the server-side. There is no fixed name for the radio group, it can change, however there must be a name, so that @names = $cgi->param() will give all the names. I'm thinking along something that will give me the type, like the type in JavaScript, to determine if it's a radio button in a group.

  Hi, I have a layout which requires a tab widget containing two tabs. Ideally I'd like to have each tab just be a completely flat colored rectangle, side by side. Almost exactly like the buttons you see at the top of this web page titled: "Questions" | "Tags" | "Users" | "Badges" | "Unanswered" but without the whitespace in between. I'd like to have the highlighted tab have a brighter background color. Is this possible using the tab widget? I know in 1.6+ there's a method to specify a view for the tabs themselves, but can I achieve this tight look, or should I just roll my own? Thanks

  I think the main difference between websocket and http streaming (I am not refering to polling and long polling) is websocket allows bi-directional communication which is similar to usual raw socket programming. (above is my understanding, could be wrong, feel free to correct me.) My question is how the web client (browser) continue to send another request in the already-opened websocket? Usual http request will treat another request as new socket connection, but websocket does not, that is why I am confused, how it achieve that? It should be handled in Server side or Client (browser) side?

  I'm doing something similar to close caption but not exactly the same. I have a youtube video, and I want to display certain messages at specific points in the video. When the video loads, I pull entries from the database in the format time and sentence. For example, at 0:20 the speaker says "don't forget to write down my email that you see on the side" and I want to display the email on the side. At 0:50, he says "and I'll post my office hours" so I want to show those office hours at that time. How can I do this. The video itself is hosted on youtube, but is being displayed on a private website. The div where I want to display the messages is <div id="write">.

  Hi, Basically, I have a listbox which contains a set of listboxitem (stacked horizontally). On selected listboxitem, there will be dropshadoweffect applied to the border of the listboxitem. The problem i am having at the moment is the dropshadopeffect on the left hand side is covering (on top of) the left listboxitem. This is fine for me, however the dropshadoweffect on the right hand side of the listboxitem is covered by (below) the right listboxitem. Is there a way to make them consistent? so that both sides' dropshadoweffect will appear on top of the left and right listboxitems. Please let me know if you need more information. Any help would be appreciated.

  I'd like to load something from website B into a page on website A and contain the functionality of website B within a container on website A. I tried doing this using a div and jQuery's load() method but I run into cross-domain-scripting issues (I think, it works with a local file but not a remote URL). I also tried using an iframe but strange things happen (for example, when a link is clicked in the "contained" website B, it reloads the entire browser, losing the content of website A). I've read about some server-side ways of handling this (and it may just come to that) but ideally I want something completely client side, JavaScript and HTML. Any ideas?

I have two deque-s and I need to popLeft from them with a while, but if I can pop from the first deque, I don't pop from the second because is not evaluated, by the OR operator. Trying to display a hebrew string that starts with a number, always displays the number at the end of the string like so: 1. ??? ???? ????? but I need the number to be displayed at the right side of the text- any solution to that? It happens with UILabel & UITextField & UITextView and trying to write the number at the left side also produce the same resault. Playing with combinations of UITextAlignment will doesn't help.

• Can I modify an ASP.NET AJAX History Point?

  I'm using ASP.NET 3.5 with AJAX and have enabled history on the Script Manager. I have 2 pages, Default.aspx and Default2.aspx. I'm using the AJAX History on the Default.aspx page and saving history points on the server-side. There are some dropdowns on Default.aspx that I don't want to save a history point for each change but would like to save the latest state so that when I click on a link on Default.aspx that navigates to Default2.aspx, when I click the back button on Default2.aspx to return I want the dropdowns to reflect what they were prior to clicking on the hyperlink. So what I'd like to do is modify the history point that I originally set on one of my ajax async postbacks on the client-side before the page navigates away to Default2.aspx. There is a location.hash javascript property that looks like it may do what I want but when I modify the value the Script Manager Navigate event is firing. Is there a way to prevent this event from firing? And would this then do the job?
