• How to disable scrolling in ScrollViewer while Ctrl is pressed

  I'd like to implement zoom function while Ctrl key is pressed. But the MouseWheel event is not trigger while the mouse is over the ScrollView.   I have an existing class (I didn't write) that implements IXmlSerializable. I decided to create a WCF service so my Silverlight application could access this class. I return the class as List. In the generated proxy, instead of an ObservableCollection like I'm expecting, I get ArrayOfXElement[]. If I remove the IXmlSerializable attribute, I get an the ObservableCollection. I don't quite understand what is happening, but I just want my SL app to receive an ObservableCollection. Is my only choice to create a DTO class and send back a list of those? Any advice?

• XAML: make a ScrollViewer show scrollbars when the ScaleTransform of a child object gets big

  Hi. I am making a sort of "print preview" control for some documents in my Silverlight 3 application. I have a Canvas (for showing the document) inside of a ScrollViewer, and I have zoom in / zoom out buttons that control the X and Y Scale properties of the ScaleTransform for the Canvas.RenderTransform property. I want the scrollbars of the ScrollViewer to show up when I "zoom in" enough such that the canvas is no longer visible in the ScrollViewer area, but it seems that they only show up depending on the Width/Height of the Canvas itself, regardless of whether it is zoomed in or not. Can anyone help?

• How do I present Prism module views?

The application is going to grow soon(TM), and I'll be facing the need to host those modules in separate GUI elements. What type of GUI elements would you recommend to host the modules? Is it possible to data-bind a module to some control like a tab-control? How is it done? Is there some kind of a dock manager (similiar to AvalonDock) for Silverlight?

• FileInfo..ctor(string fileName) throwing exception: bug in SL 4.0 or .NET 4.0?

  The following test case passes in .NET 4.0: var fiT = new FileInfo("myhappyfilename"); Assert.IsNotNull(fiT); ... but fails in Silverlight 4.0 with the following error: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: format at System.String.Format(IFormatProvider provider, String format, Object[] args) at System.Environment.GetResourceString(String key, Object[] values) at System.IO.FileSecurityState.EnsureState() at System.IO.FileInfo.Init(String fileName, Boolean checkHost) at System.IO.FileInfo..ctor(String fileName) Either the failure is a bug in SL 4.0, or the non-failure is a bug in .NET 4.0. Anyone know which it is? (For the record, I'm running SL 4.0 on VS 2010 RC, which may be contributing to the problem).

  Hi guys, I'm tring to create a generic collection of dynamic type at runtime of Silverlight application. My code: Type listType = Type.GetType("System.Collections.ObjectModel.ObservableCollection`1[[" + type.AssemblyQualifiedName + "]], System.Windows, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e", true); type - is variable of Type type. That Type is creating at runtime. At that code line I've got error: Could not load file or assembly ', Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. How can I resolve that error?

  Most of the code I've written in .NET to make REST calls have been synchronous. Since Silverlight on Windows Phone only supports Async WebClient and HttpWebRequest calls, I was wondering what a good async pattern is for a Class that exposes methods that make REST calls. For example, I have an app that needs to do the following. Login and get token Using token from #1, get a list of albums Using token from #1 get a list of categories etc my class exposes a few methods: Login() GetAlbums() GetCategories() since each method needs to call WebClient using Async calls what I need to do is essentially block calling Login till it returns so that I can call GetAlbums(). What is a good way to go about this in my class that exposes those methods?

Product and LocatorID are, in combination, the primary key. I'm guessing that EF is not allowing me to generate a new item without meeting database contraints? How does this make sense if I need to obtain a primary key from the user? I have control over all tiers of the application, so suggestions on database design if needed are also welcomed.

To try it out, I have this listbox in my Page.xaml: <ListBox Height="100" Name="lbCategories" Width="236" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="20,0,0,0" SelectionMode="Multiple" ItemsSource="{Binding Categories}" DisplayMemberPath="Name" /> In my Page.xaml.cs I have a public property called Categories of the type ObservableCollection. It works if this following line is present in my CS file: DataContext = this; But I want to avoid any programatically databinding. • Ria Services vs WCF Dataservices

  My Team are evaluation to a bigger Business portal. (Invoicing, Bookkeeping, Salaries.....) We are all used to work with DDD, O/R mappers with NHibernate as our first choice. We have chosen to work with CompositeWPF to keep modularity between all modules and part system in the business portal. Now we have evaluated Ria Services and are kind of disappointed how it works in a Data Oriented way, Data Oriented can be good in a service oriented scenario, but we feel that we can with an Object Oriented approach to, and we feel that we can get an application with less complexity with the OO approach than the DO approach. For example it doesn't allow Value Objects, Many-to-many relations, everything needs to have keys and so on. We haven't looked at WCF Data Services yet so our question is WCF Data Services our answere? Does it integrate good with Silverlight 4? Can we work with it in a OO manor?

• Is there a better way than this to find out if an IsolatedStorage file exists or not?

  I'm using IsolatedStorage in a Silverlight application for caching, so I need to know if the file exists or not which I do with the following method. I couldn't find a FileExists method for IsolatedStorage so I'm just catching the exception, but it seems to be a quite general exception, I'm concerned it will catch more than if the file doesn't exist.   We have a WEb Service named, let's say Foo. So there is a Foo.svc file and a code behind Foo.svc.cs. We add a silverlight project and wish to use the Foo.svc services so we add a Service Reference and call it's namespace FooBar. This creates the following files : Reference.cs Reference.svcmap Foo.xsd Foo.disco configuration.svcinfo Foo.wsdl Also various *.datasource files. Over time we update the Foo.svc and add more Web Services (methods and interfaces) and the number of files in the FooBar directory is growing. I have 26 Foo(nn).xsd files in this directory - where nn = 1 to 26. My configuration.svcinfo is upto configuration91.svcinfo. My question is this? Do any of these files need to be version controlled? Can they all be deleted each time you do a build \ deploy (as long as you do an update service reference)?

  My goal is to generate a PDF for display in a web page, either as aspx or with a generic handler. (This will link from a Silverlight page, but this is irrelevant to the problem.) The problem is that LocalReport (Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms; Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll) requires full trust, and our hosting server does not allow full trust. I am aware that ReportViewer has a remote mode that will allow it to run with partial trust, but for that I need a report server url which should probably have full trust as well, which does not solve anything. So how do I generate PDFs from WebForms in a partially trusted environment?

• Web Services: more frequent "small" calls, or less frequent "big" calls

  In general, is it better to have a web application make lots of calls to a web service getting smaller chunks of data back, or to have the web app make fewer calls and get larger chunks of data? In particular, I'm building a Silverlight app that needs to get large amounts of data back from the server in response to a query created by a user. Each query could return anywhere from a few hundred records to a few thousand. Each record has around thirty fields of mostly decimal-type data. I've run into the situation before where the payload size of the response exceeded the maximum allowed by the service. I'm wondering whether it's better (more efficient for the server/client/web service) to cut this payload vertically--getting all values for a single field with each call--or horizontally--getting batches of complete records with each call. Or does it matter?

  Is there any ability to mock methods that are provided with RIA Services? I would like to test my Silverlight App without communication to the server side... I see a following approach: create a separate interface; add it to "base classes" for my RiaService; define each autogenerated RIA-method in this interface; insert dependency so that my "functionality" will depend not from the RiaService, but from the interface that is implemented with RiaService. But for this case I see a problem: how to keep my interface in the auto-generated files? ANy thoughts are welcome.

  Hello -- System.Drawing.Color has a ToArgb() method to return the Int representation of the color. In Silverlight, I think we have to use System.Windows.Media.Color. It has A, R, G, B members, but no method to return a single value. How can I implement ToArgb()? In System.Drawing.Color, ToArgb() consists of return (int) this.Value; System.Windows.Media.Color has a FromArgb(byte A, byte R, byte G, byte B) method. How do I decompose the Int returned by ToArgb() to use with FromArgb()? Thanks for any pointers...

• WriteableBitmap in .NET 4

  Hi there, I have got a problem: I would like to use a method Render() for WriteableBitmap object. However, as I noticed, the method is not available without using a Silverlight assembly System.Windows.dll. I need to use RenderTargetBitmap in my project (PresentationCore assembly for standard .net). Here is the problem - there are definitions of some classes in both assemblies, thus they are in conflict. Basically, I need to add some stuff to Bgra32 bitmap. However, RenderTargetBitmap works only with Pbgra32 ones. I found that using WriteableBitmap to render would be nice. Maybe I am wrong? Do you have any ideas? Thank you in advance for the reply!   Hi everybody! In a Silverlight 4 proj i'm using WCF RIA services, MVVM principles and EF 4. I 'm running into this situation: created an entity called Category and another one called CategoryLocale (automated using VS, no POCO). The relation between them is 1 to N respectively (one Category can have many CategoryLocales), so trough this relationship one can implement master-detail scenarios. Everytime i change a property in the master record (Category) i get a notifypropertychanged notification raised. But: whenever i change a property in the detail (CategoryLocales) i don't get anything raised. The detail part is bound to a Datagrid like this: <sdk:DataGrid Grid.Row="3" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" ItemsSource="{Binding SelectedRecord.CategoryLocales,Mode=TwoWay}" AutoGenerateColumns="False" VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Auto" > Any help is appreciated!
