• Managing important runtime business logic with regard to a codebase

  I'm working on a project which will end up have a lot of application information stored in the form of records in a database. In this case, it's the configuration of data views: which grid columns to show/hide default filters to apply to each grid view column titles sorting subtotaling ... This information is a big part of the value of the application and is essential to it's function. The data will be altered by admins a fair amount, so it's not static and it wouldn't be appropriate to have to deploy a new version of the app every time the data changes. The question is, Where should this data be stored? It will definitely live in the database because that's how it's accessed, but I feel like it needs to also be kept with the version controlled codebase because it's an integral part of functioning of the application. Has anyone dealt with an issue like this before? What did you end up doing?

  In DDD, Repository takes care of saving and retrieving domain objects and also serves as collection of Aggregate Roots. My question is how do you retrieve the information for those child entities (let's say from DB) of an Aggregate where basic rule is Repository should just hold collection of Aggregate Roots (parent object) and not child objects? For example: User (parent object) Orders (child object) User domain object is stored in user table and Orders are stored in another table. • Accessing form's resources (resx file) from code

  If I have a form Frm1.cs that is using some icons, images or other resources, these resources get stored in the form's resx file (Frm1.resx). My simple question is how do I access these resources from code? As a workaround I can store these resources in the Project resource file and they will be available via Properties.Resources.resourcename. However, similar syntax does not work for the resources stored in the form's resource file. While searching for a solution I have come across several references to ResourceManager class but was not able to find a way to use that to access the form's resources...

• Is there a standard practice for storing default application data?

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

  I have the following table, which is used for storing bandings. The table is maintained via a web frontend. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Banding]( [BandingID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [ValueLowerLimitOperator] [varchar](10) NULL, [ValueLowerLimit] [decimal](9, 2) NULL, [ValueUpperLimitOperator] [varchar](10) NULL, [ValueUpperLimit] [decimal](9, 2) NULL, [VolumeLowerLimitOperator] [varchar](10) NULL The operator fields store values such as < = <=. I want to get to a position where I can use the operators values stored in the table in a case statement in a where clause. Like this. SELECT * FROM table WHERE CASE ValueLowerLimitOperator WHEN '<' THEN VALUE < X WHEN '>' THEN VALUE > X END rather than having to write mutiple case or if statements for each permutation. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can decode the operators values stored in the table as part of my query and then use them in a case/where statement?

  Anyone know of any well-supported/proven methods for converting a Microsoft word document to an MP3 or wav format such that hearing-impaired folks could "listen" to documents that I have stored in my web-based document management system? I already have the interface built such that someone can use the telephone to get the list of documents available, with the dates and titles "read" to them over the phone, but now I would like the ability to let someone actually listen to the contents of word files stored in the system. Ideally a .net library or utility that would let me convert the DOC - MP3 after each upload would be best, but one that "read" the file on demand would be OK too.

• What is the cost in bytes for the overhead of a sql_variant column in SQL Server?

  I have a table, which contains many columns of float data type with 15 digit precision. Each column consumes 8 bytes of storage. Most of the time the data does not require this amount of precision and could be stored as a real data type. In many cases the value can be 0, in which case I could get away with storing a single byte. My goal here is to optimize space storage requirements, which is an issue I am facing working with a SQL Express 4GB database size limit. If byte, real and float data types are stored in a sql_variant column there is obviously some overhead involved in storing these values. What is the cost of this overhead? I would then need to evaluate whether I would actually end up in significant space savings (or not) switching to using sql_variant column data types. Thanks, Elan

  I have a client who wants his custom-written CRM to be able to access his sales people's emails so that, effectively, a history of email conversations between customer and salesperson is stored inside the CRM's database. The CRM is written in VB 2008 and the database is SQL Server 2008. The only email these people use, in the shop and on the road, is GMAIL. Each sales person has their own GMAIL address. Thats how they operate. If they're on the road and respond to a customer's email inquiry about a product, they would like that email conversation to be stored in a table in the database. • Order database results by bayesian rating

  I'm not sure this is even possible, but I need a confirmation before doing it the "ugly" way :) So, the "results" are posts inside a database which are stored like this: the posts table, which contains all the important stuff, like the ID, the title, the content the post meta table, which contains additional post data, like the rating (this_rating) and the number of votes (this_num_votes). This data is stored in pairs, the table has 3 columns: post ID / key / value. It's basically the WordPress table structure. What I want is to pull out the highest rated posts, sorted based on this formula: br = ( (avg_num_votes * avg_rating) + (this_num_votes * this_rating) ) / (avg_num_votes + this_num_votes) which I stole form here. avg_num_votes and avg_rating are known variables (they get updated on each vote), so they don't need to be calculated. Can this be done with a mysql query? Or do I need to get all the posts and do the sorting with PHP?

  Hi Everyone, Is it possible to get the memory address of a variable in C#. What I am trying to do is very simple. I want to declare variables of type Double, Float, Decimal and assign the value 1.1 to each of these variables. Then I would like to go and see how these values are represented in memory. I need to get the memory address of the variable in order to see how its stored in memory. • Custom "Very Long Int" Division Issue

  Hey everyone, So, for a very silly project in C++, we are making our own long integer class, called VLI (Very Long Int). The way it works (they backboned it, blame them for stupidity) is this: User inputs up to 50 digits, which are input as string. String is stored in pre-made Sequence class, which stores the string in an array, in reverse order. That means, when "1234" is input, it gets stored as [4|3|2|1]. So, my question is this: How can I go about doing division using only these arrays of chars? If the input answer is over 32 digits, I can't use ints to check for stuff, and they basically saying using long ints here is cheating. Any input is welcome, and I can give more clarification if need be, thanks everyone.

• Localizing other pages in Settings.bundle

  I have other pages within my app preferences which are stored as separate files within the settings.bundle. It has come time to localize my app and I can only seem to get the Root values to localize. I was wondering whether there was a trick? The following image shows that my second screen is stored within a file called "MyPrefs.plist" and I have created a corresponding named file "MyPrefs.strings" in the en.lproj directory. Mirroring the same naming and location as the Root.plist and Root.strings. The values with the Root.plist are converted as expected but not in the extra screen. Is there any trick to localizing secondary screens with the settings.bundle?

  Hello All, How can I search my sql database for a table that contains a field 'tiEntityId'. This field is referenced in a stored procedure, but I am unable to identify which table this id is a primary key for? Any suggestions?   Hi, i have a quick question. I have a 2D array that stores an instance of a class. The elements of the array are assigned a particular class based on a text file that is read earlier in the program. Since i do not know without looking in the file what class is stored at a particular element i could refer to a field that doesn't exist at that index (referring to appearance when an instance of temp is stored in that index). i have come up with a method of testing this, but it is long winded and requires a second matrix. • Reading Values Returned by SQLDataSource Before Binding to FormView

  I have a FormView that shows posts by users. I'd like to add Edit and Delete commands to the post to let the original author edit or delete their post. I'd like these commands to be available to only the author. The FormView is populated by a SqlDataSource that uses a stored procedure. I was thinking I would set the Edit and Delete hyperlink to Visible=False, then compare the currently signed in user guid to the guid of the post's author, and make the hyperlinks visible if the two guids are the same. I've tried using the Selected event of the SqlDataSource to capture the guid (which is returned by the stored procedure) however I can't find way to get the values returned by this datasource. How do I access the values returned by a SqlDataSource before they get databound?

• Mysql replace() function, help with query (what chars do I escape?)

  I am trying to update an old cms where images were stored in /images/editor/, they are now stored in a bucket on amazon s3. I'm trying to update the database using mysql replace. I've done this in the past with replacing simple words, but now Mysql is reporting an error, I suspect because this is more than a simple word: UPDATE contents SET desc = replace(desc, '/images/editor/', 'http://s3.amazonaws.com/my_bucket/editor/') Do I need to escape the : or slashes? I've tried escaping it with a '\' to no avail. Can someone get me pointed in the right direction? Thanks! • java servlet: generate zip file from BLOBs

  I'm trying to zip a large number of pdf files (stored as BLOBs in the DB) and then return the zip as an attachment to the user. What's the best way to do this without running into memory issues? Another note: I actually need to merge some PDFs prior to adding them to the ZipOutputStream. Therefore, a couple PDFs will need to be stored in memory at a time. I assume it would be best to then store them as temporary files on the server before zipping them all?
