• Applescript won't open applications on my external monitor

  I'm trying to open a new MacVim window with Applescript, and have found partial success with this: do shell script "cd \"~/code/application\"; ~/bin/mvim > /dev/null 2>&1" This works fine, and opens a new MacVim window with it's working directory set to ~/code/application. BUT it always opens on the screen of my laptop, not on the external monitor with the currently active space where I am working. Is there a way to get MacVim to open in the current space? Edit: same problem with opening a finder window: tell application "Finder" to make new Finder window

• How to start a cmd window and issue tail request in a bat file?

  I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here? • Windows Virtual Machine ping reply fails the first few times

  I am running a windows Web Server 2008 virtual machine. When I try to ping it from another windows machine the ping reply comes straight back with 100% success. But when I try to ping it from one of the Linux boxes, the ping reply fails with partial or 100% loss the first couple of time and succeeds the third time onwards. I know it is quite strange but can any one think anything that could be causing it. Could anything in the Windows Domain Security or Firewall be "taking time" to allow responding to the ping request? In fact even the firewall is turned off on the virtual machine.

• Motherboard with embedded hdmi problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64bit)

  I'm specifically referring to GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX with a Core 2 Duo chip. This computer is connected to a Sharp Aquous TV using HDMI. It all worked fine with Windows 7 64 bit. In Device Manager I see GeForce 9400 and have installed the latest NVidia drivers (295.73 WHQL). However, when I click on the change the screen resolution to 1920x1080, I see that Windows 8 thinks that it's using some other graphics card with Microsoft Basic Display Driver. This was made clear, when I tried to launch the NVidia tools and it claimed that the current monitor (in this case my TV) wasn't attached to the GeForce 9400 card. In Device Manager, there's a "Coprocessor" and "Unknown device" without drivers, but I've no idea what they are. I've run the original CD that the motherboard came with no success. Any ideas?

  I was wondering if there is a system monitor app that will raise (audible) alerts and offer app closure if it detects runaway threads on Android that cause physical overheating and battery drain. E.g., I just had to turn my phone off because there was a runaway thread that I think was constantly trying to refresh FB where there was very poor connection, so it was going in a virtually endless loop. But I get that with other apps too and not just Facebook. I'd like to actually shut apps down when they're detected. I am not kidding, I nearly burned my fingertips when I touched my phone -- it was on for only 2 hrs and the battery was almost dead. It is because 4G is very poor inside my office building and I checked Facebook walking between my vehicle and the building this AM. After that, the app kept trying to refresh continuously without success and overheating the phone.

• Cannot delete folder - Content seems to be nested recursively

  I cannot delete a folder located on my hard disk by any means. I don't quite know how it was created, all I know is, that it is a pretty deep structure of folders (too deep to delete it at once, since Windows restriction path name too long), but the problem in the end is, that I can't "pull out" the inner folders, because they don't seem to be folders anymore (Context menu lacks things like "Properties", "Cut", "Copy", "Delete" etc.) Here a picture of how a right click looks like on one of these "folders": As you can see, the current folder is in very deep, but that is not the problem, rather the one I left-clicked on. Has anyone any advice on how to get rid of these? I tried a chkdsk, said no errors. I also tried deleting those folder via a VMWare Ubuntu, to no success. I also tried a batch file from a volunteer at MS boards, that should automatically de-nest such folders, but I guess mine is a special case, since the tool only created more such folders.

• PHP pages are not parsed by Apache on CentOS

  I have installed Centos 5.x, Apache 2.2, PHP 5.3 and MySQL 5.5. I also installed phpMyAdmin. I am able to access phpMyAdmin through the browser without any issues. However, when I create a simple index.php with phpinfo() function in the default directory, that page is served without php parsing. As we all know, phpMyAdmin is a php application. This is working fine from the same server but not the simple php page from the doc root directory ??!!!. Of course, I tried moving this page into phpMyAdmin folder and tried accessing it, but no success. Please note that I updated httpd.conf file with appropriate directives based on the php installation guide. docroot - /var/www/html phpMyAdmin folder - /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin Any help is appreciated.

• Can't access to a iSCSI volume

  I have a iSCSI target on a customer place I'm using from an old Fedora (Core6) server. I configured it and formatted as ext3 (mistake, now I know) and I've been working with it for some time. Now I need to access this volume from other machine. As far as I've read, I can't do it safely from two machines at the same time (yep, that's the first thing I tried). So I've umount it from original server and tried to mount it on the new server (I did it at first with Ubuntu 10 LTS but when I was unable to do it I installed another Fedora with the same configuration) with no success. The problem: I can see all target on NAS but when I do a "fdisk -l" to see all devices and know which mount I see all targets as SFS filesystem. From the original server I see all SFS (after all, they belong to my customer and don't know what he have in) except the one I manage which I see as 'Linux'. What can I do? • iPhone VPN to iTunes Home Sharing [migrated]

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

• Windows 7 ISO not booting from DVD drive?

  I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo). My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

• Why does "return ERROR" only work with exceptions?

  In the struts.xml I use: <result name="error">error</result> Then in my action I use: addActionError("ERROR RETURNED"); return ERROR; When I submit the form then it just goes to a blank page and does nothing. However, if I FORCE an exception to be thrown in the action then it goes to the error page and shows the ActionError message. So am I doing this wrong? If so, how should I tell struts to show an error page using "if statements" instead of relying solely on expensive try catches? • How can I tell if a host is bridged and acting as a router

  I would like to scan my DMZ for hosts that are bridged between subnets and have routing enabled. Since I have everything from VMWare servers, to load balancers on the DMZ I'm unsure if every host is configured correctly. What IP, ICMP, or SNMP (etc) tricks can I use to poll the hosts and determine if the host is acting as a router? I'm assuming this test would presume I know the target IP, but in a large network with many subnets, I'd have to test many different combinations of networks and see if I get success. Here is one example (ping): For each IP in the DMZ, arp for the host MAC Send a ICMP reply message to that host directed at an online host on each subnet I think that there is a more optimal way to get the information, namely from within ICMP/IP itself, but I'm not sure what low level bits to look for. I would also be interested if it's possible to determine the "router" status without knowing the subnets that the host may be connected to. This would be useful to know when improving our security posture.

  I want to use cursor keys or cursor keys with a modifier like Ctrl to switch between screen buffers (e.g. C-a [arrow] or C-a C-[arrow]). So far I have tried settings like the ones below with no success. bind \224\115 prev bind \224\116 next bindkey -d ^[[1;5D prev bindkey -d ^[[1;5C next They are either ignored or behave unexpectedly (the second one). I am also not sure how to specify the keys. To get the characters, I either used C-v to quote them in bash, or tried to look-up on the Internet (e.g. http://ascii-table.com/ansi-escape-sequences.php). • FTP blocked by firewall on windows 8.1 update 1 public network

  I've recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 u1. I connect to VPN to one of my projects, over which I connect to FTP server (using Total Commander 8.51a). Now, when I try to connect, Total Commander hangs on "Download" (in case of passive connection on "PASV" command). I've figured out that the problem is somehow caused by firewall, because it works if I disable firewall or I set the VPN network location to "private" (which I don't want, it is not enough trusted network for me) I tried to add total commander to firewall exception for total commander, both to inbound and outbound rule, but with no success. I have no more ideas how to configure the firewall to make FTP work properly, can you plese help me? thanks in advance.

• Error sysprepping Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial

  I am using the Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial to evaluate the latest version of Windows for a private school. The way I work is that I use sysprep to prepare an generalized image, then I clone it to the school's computers. When I follow the instructions and try sysprep on my installation of Windows 8 in VirtualBox, sysprep thinks briefly and gives me an error message: Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine. Once I acknowledge it, sysprep closes. I checked the Windows Event Log, and there's nothing there that I could see. I also followed some instructions to cure this problem, but nothing changed. The error remains. My best guess is that the 90-day trial prohibits the use of sysprep, but I can't be sure. It might also be my use of VirtualBox, or who-knows-what. Has anyone had success with this, or encountered the same issue on real hardware?

I have used the gcInterval JVM arg in the past on earlier versions of ColdFusion with success, but I have confirmed with verbose GC logs that Full GCs are still happening on the hour (Unless the Old Gen gets so full that it forces a full collection). • Why won't AVI2DVD load the audio stream?

  XP SP3 I have an .avi file. It is in a folder on my "C:" drive. There are no disallowed characters in either the folder or file name. It has audio as I have watched it on my computer. I want to burn it to a DVD. When I load the file into AVI2DVD, no audio stream shows, and the program will not work without an audio stream. I have used the net extensively to try and solve this, with no success. AFICT I have followed all instructions exactly, but no audio stream. Very frustrating. Does anyone have a clue? • Are there web search engines with exact match or regex capabilities (for related terms)?

  Every once in a while I come upon a situation when google's way of searching results in too broad results even if I enclose my search terms in quotation marks. For example now I've tried to find pages that contain both "py.path" and "path.py" without much success. I'm currently aware of engines|sites like Google Code Search for searching actual code and (apparently) Stackoverflow for searching QAs, symbolhound that lets me find symbols, and also wikipedia is often a good place to find lists of symbols. But none of these seems to perform very good in matching exactly on search term pairs (or tuples) and use a broad-enough segment of the web. Is there a website that is good with exactly finding search term pairs? (Why not?)

  I downloaded a torrent file from internet. The problem is it's size is showing 0 bytes. I tried to scan it with antivirus, upload it to virus total, delete it but it's showing the file is not found. I tried to delete it in safe mode also but no success.   I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?

I think that question should have been posted on serverfault instead. I was thinking that the problem seems to be that the thin clients aren't able to get an IP address when they are connected and I can't manually set it.   I am attempting to set a character set of IBM850 on slackware linux for a particular application (epic5). Im using rxvt-unicode and have setup LANG/LC_*=en_US. Now if I set the encoding to IBM850 in kde's konsole program im able to display certain characters correctly. I'd rather not use IBM850 for everything; is there a way to set/alias a command for a per application execution? Ive tried things like: LC_CTYPE=IBM850 epic5 LC_ALL=IBM850 epic5 No success. I've two PCs connected to the same monitor, far away (80cm) from me. To push the monitor button is not so easy and comfortable as could seems, moreover if you have to do it almost 20 times a day.
