• Can't connect to VPN on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm having a lot of trouble connecting to VPN. This used to work on my machine, but i recently did an update and it's stopped working. I'm not sure what the problem is. My question is how do i debug this? I'm not able to narrow it down to a specific problem. This is what i get when i tail the syslogs. Would appreciate any help! • New features in TFS Demo Setup 1.0.0.2

Feature 1 – Set up Work Items Queries as Team Favorites The task board looks cooler when the team favourite work item queries show up on the task board. The demo setup console application now has the ability to set up the work item queries as team favorites for you. If you want to see how you can add Team Favorites programmatically, refer to this blogpost here. Image 1 – Task board without Team Favorites Let’s see how the TFS Demo Setup application sets-up team favorites as part of the run… Open up the DemoDictionary.xml and you should be able to see the new node <TeamFavorites> this accepts multiple <TeamFavorite>. You simply need to specify the <Type> as Query and in the <Name> specify the name of the work item query that you would like added as a favorite. Image 2 – Highlighting the TeamFavorites block in DemoDictionary.xml So, when the demo set up application is run with the above config, work item queries “Blocked Tasks” and “Open Impediments” are added as team favorites. They then show up on the task board, as highlighted in the screen shot below. Image 3 – Team Favorites setup during the TFS demo setup app execution Feature 2 – Choose what you want to setup and exclude the rest I had a great feature request come in requesting the ability to exclude parts of the setup at the sole discretion of the executioner. To accommodate this, I have added an attribute with each block, the attribute “Run” accepts “true” or “false”. If you set the flag to true then at the time of execution that block would be considered for setup and if you set the flag to false, the block will be ignored during the setup. So, lets look at an example below… The attribute "Run” is set to true for TeamSettings, Team Favorites, TeamMembers and WorkItems. So, all of these would be setup as part of the demo setup application execution. Image 4 – New Attribute Run added to all blocks in DemoDictionary.xml If I did not want to recreate the team and did not want to add new work items but only wanted to add favorites and team members to the existing team “AgileChamps1” then I could simple run the application with below DemoDictionary.xml. Note – TeamSettings Run=”false” and WorkItems Run=”false”. Image 5 – TeamFavorites and TeamMembers set as true and others set to false Feature 3 – Usability Improvement If you try and assign a work item to a team member that does not exist then the application throws a nasty exception. This behaviour has now been changed, upon adding such a work item, the work items will be created and not assigned to any user. The work item id will be printed to the console making it simple for you to assign the work item manually. As you can see in the screen shot below, I am trying to assign the work item to a user “Tarun” and a user “v2” both are *not valid users in my team project collection* so the tool creates the work items and provides me the work item id and lets me know that since the user is invalid the work item could not be assigned to the user.   There are 5 steps in this job. First job is an SSIS Package store, second to fifth are file system jobs. We configured all jobs to use Windows Authentication. Under Run As, we specified a user account which was created under SecurityCredentials and SQL Server AgentProxiesSSIS Package execution. The job runs without any problems with this user account. We then proceeded to configure the job to use a service account instead. Service account was specified under SecurityCredentials and SQL Server AgentProxiesSSIS Package Execution. • Server cost for smartphone app with web service

  Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!

• WAMP server not starting and a mystery service is using port 80

  I'm using WAMP on Windows 7 and tonight I'm unable to start it (it's been working fine for about 3 years previously). I first checked the logs, but nothing in there. So I checked the Windows Event Viewer (eventvwr), where I saw 2x errors for each attempted start - The Apache service named reported the following error: (OS 10048)Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80. The Apache service named reported the following error: no listening sockets available, shutting down. After this, I opened the command prompt and ran netstat -a, and to my surprise there were 3 entries for port 80 - Prot   Local Address  Foreign Address   State TCP   127.0.0.1:80       MyPCName:53831   TIME_WAIT TCP   127.0.0.1:80       MyPCName:57834   TIME_WAIT TCP   127.0.0.1:80       MyPCName:57839   TIME_WAIT From here, I'm kind of lost. As far as I can tell, something is utalising port 80, but I don't know what or why. If anyone is able to suggest what I might do next I'd be most greatful. Thanks.

• Can't add service account to domain group during SQL cluster install

  I'm installing a 2008 instance on a Server 2003 machine which is already running SQL 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group? UPDATE: I'm looking for specific instructions. I have a global group called domain\servicegroup - what do I tell the security folks to do. I'd love to figure it out myself, but I don't have access to this stuff.

• Why is my cron daemon is being killed every few minutes? OpenVZ?

  As of about a week ago, my cron daemon refuses to stay running. I'm using Debian 6. Running something like pgrep cron shows that the daemon isn't running. I start the service with service cron start or /etc/init.d/cron start and it launches, but it disappears from the running process list after a few minutes (varying anywhere between 1 - 30 minutes before the process is killed again). • How to install service packs onto Thin Apps and other questions

  I have a VM that I use to do all my ThinApps, Once I have done my application and its built I copy just the bin folder to a server which has a share, I then create a shortcut to the program exe on users desktops. This all seems to work ok. Firstly is this correct? If so, how then do I apply a service pack to that application after the ThinApp VM has been reverted to a base image, I have corel draw which i have a service pack for but it wont intall it as its saying it cant find the package installed on the computer. I have Thinreg batch file so have included corel into that and the program appears in the program list. I have the sandbox redirected to the server share mentioned earlier into seperate user folders when the user logs in. Obvisouly once i have done a App I revert to a previous snapshop so my thinapp vm is back to base image, so the corel install is lost. Sorry if im missing something very simple. Is its a case if you have an exe/msp you have to reinstall the whole app again and start over, Thanks for any help.

• Do you need to advertise an AFP service via Avahi for an Ubuntu Server to show up in OSX Finder?

  I am only advertising an NFS share plus the "model", and I don't want to install extra services on the Server unless I have to, ie netatalk, as it is used solely for NFS exports. Plus allow users to connect to NFS in a manner they are familiar with like our other Xserve servers. I think Avahi is working in general as if I do: nfs://FILESERVER.local/Volumes/StoragePool it will connect fine. Any ideas?

• Exchange 2010 SP2 Not Allowing Logon for Users with Expired Passwords

  When we provision users we set the "User must change password at next logon" flag and instruct them to go to OWA to login for the first time and change their password. Using the registry setting ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled as explained here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684904.aspx worked well prior to SP2 installation. This allows users with 'expired' passwords to logon and forces a password change before they can access OWA. We just installed Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 and now it's no longer working. Users with this flag set ('expired' passwords) can't login in at all unless we clear the flag. FYI here's the registry key configuration as set now with SP2 installed: Any suggestions as to how I might fix this? Or did MS break this feature in Service Pack 2?

• Slow Network Performance with Windows Server 2008 SP1

  I recently installed Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008. Since that time, network performance has been awful. Both Windows 7 and Mac Snow Leopard clients have seen miserable speeds when trying to read or write to the server. This is the exact update: Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition (KB976932) It's a very simple file server setup. No Domain or Active Directory. Essentially just shared folders. It's Windows Web Server that I'm running. Are there any settings I can tweak? Should I roll back the update (doesn't seem wise)? Update: I've turned off the Power Management for the Network Adapter. That may help. If it doesn't have to be powered on at the start of a request, it should speed things up. Or so I would assume.

• Wireless network unavailable, no networks found after Windows update

  Old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with Linksys Wireless G network adapter card (WPC54G v2). Wireless connection was working fine. Then I ran a bunch of windows updates, I think the last one was the recent .NET 3.5 service pack update. Now wireless networks won't connect. Using windows to manage wireless, no networks show up. I'm typing right now on another laptop where wireless is working fine. I've restarted router & Dell laptop several times. Tried to Repair wireless connection and refresh network list. Also restarted DHCP and WZC service, all to no avail. I then uninstalled .NET 3.5 SP (don't remember number) and .NET 3.0 SP2. I don't remember all the windows updates that I just ran because I haven't used this laptop in a while so had to catch up on some updates.

• Error setting up Blackberry Internet Service with Outlook Web Access

  I'm trying to set up Blackberry Internet Service to connect to our Windows SBS2003 outlook web access. I've tried every possible combination of credentials by I always get the same error: An error occured during email account validation. Please check your information and try again. If the error persists please contact your System Administrator. The fields are the following: Outlook Web Access URL: http://mail.domain.com/exchange (I've also tried just using the IP address http://000.000.000.000/exchange with no effect). User Name: JohnDoe (same as OWA login / domain username - I've also tried DOMAIN\JohnDoe) Email Address: [email protected] Mailbox Name: This one confused me a little bit, but it seems it should be the same as the domain username (eg. JohnDoe). I've also tried DOMAIN\JohnDoe, and a number of other things. No matter what I do, I get the same error message. At this point, I'm basically just trying things, because I don't really know how this service is supposed to work. Does anyone know what causes this particularly vague error message, and what I can change either in my email settings or on our exchange server to resolve this?

• Puppet inventory service using puppetdb

  I have 3 servers set up. A puppet master using passenger (puppet-server1), dashboard using passenger (puppet-server2) and puppetdb (puppet-server3). I cannot get the inventory service working in the dashboard. The puppet master is able to sign certs and hand out manifests.   I am currently developing a project which is mission-critical. The actual domain name is registered with 1 & 1 and I plan on purchasing DynDNS Custom DNS service (which has 5 different geographical locations for DNS) and then another secondary DNS service to make sure my DNS is as failover safe as possible. Does it matter that the registration is with 1 & 1 - are they a weak link in the chain? All I really use them for is to say that DynDNS is my primary DNS nameserver and then my secondary DNS is my other nameserver. I can transfer the registration to DynDNS - Im just not sure if it really matters or not. Thanks

• Tracking down the cause of a web service fault running in IIS

  I have built a web service in Visual Studio 2008, and deployed it on IIS 7 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. It has been extensively tested, handles all errors gracefully and logs any uncaught errors to a file using log4net. The system normally runs perfectly, but occasionally (2 or 3 times a day) a fault occurs and screws up the application which needs an iisreset to get it working again. When the fault occurs I get some random errors that are caught by my catch-all error log, such as: Value cannot be null. Could not convert from type 'System.Boolean' to type 'System.DateTime'. Sequence contains no elements These errors are raised on every request until I manually do an iisreset, but there is no sight of them when the system is running normally. The web service is a stateless request-response application. Nothing is stored in the session. It could be load related, but I doubt it as there are only around 30 or 40 requests per minute. This is proving very tricky to track down. I can't work out what is putting IIS into this bad state, and why it needs an iisreset to get it working again. Nothing is reported in the event log. Can anyone suggest how to enable more extensive logging that might catch this fault? Also, does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

• chkconfig creating service symlinks with the wrong order

  On RHEL 6.3, I have a system service that should be starting after postgresql and httpd (order 64 and 85, respectively), but chkconfig always places it at order 50. I tried an experiment on a CentOS 6.0 virtual machine to make sure I understood the LSB stanza syntax. I created /etc/init.d/foo, owner root, permissions 755, with this text: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: foo # Required-Start: postgresql httpd # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6 # Description: Foo init script ### END INIT INFO And then ran chkconfig --add foo. Result: /etc/rc5.d/S86foo is created, as expected. (The other runlevels are also as expected.) I repeated the exact same experiment on the RHEL machine, and it created /etc/rc5.d/S50foo instead. I can't see anything different between the two that would lead to different results. Both machines have postgresql and httpd starting at the same orders and runlevels. Any thoughts? I could just use # chkconfig: 2345 86 50, or manually rename the service symlinks to the correct order, but I'm trying to document an install process for later users, and I want to know how to do it right and understand why it's not working as expected.

  Hey Guys, We have a windows 2003 r2 server and couple of the users are reporting that they can not scan files into the windwos server. They are getting an Out of Space errors. I took a look at the server and we have 600GB free disk space on that partition. But while looking at the event log I found a lot of errors like (13552,13555) The File Replication Service is unable to add this computer to the following replica set: "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" This could be caused by a number of problems such as: -- an invalid root path, -- a missing directory, -- a missing disk volume, -- a file system on the volume that does not support NTFS 5.0 The information below may help to resolve the problem: Computer DNS name is "server.domain.local" Replica set member name is "server" Replica set root path is "c:\windows\sysvol\domain" Replica staging directory path is "c:\windows\sysvol\staging\domain" Replica working directory path is "c:\windows\ntfrs\jet" Windows error status code is FRS error status code is FrsErrorMismatchedJournalId Other event log messages may also help determine the problem. • Running a service with a user from a different domain not working

  I've been stuck on this for a while, not sure what permission I'm missing. I've got domain A and domain B, A trusts B, but B does not trust A. I'm trying to run a service in domain A with a user account from domain B and I keep getting Access is Denied. I'm using the FQDN after the username and the password is correct. The user account from domain B is a local administrator on the domain A server, the user account has the logon locally, and as a service permissions. Must. Get. This. Working. Update: I found something interesting in the logs I must have missed. This ought to get me pointed in the right direction. Event ID: 40961 - LsaSrv : The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server ldap/{server fqdn/fqdn@fqdn} No authentication protocol was available. I've found a few fixes for 40961 but nothing has worked so far. I've verified reverse lookup zones. nslookup resolves the correct dc properly. still workin' at it. Upadte: In response to Evan; I ran " runas /env /user:ftp_user@fqdn "notepad" " then entered the users password and notepad came up. It seems to work successfully. This issue is now resolved. The problem is visible in the screenshot. Windows tries to use the UPN for the user account if you dig your user out of AD with the Browse button. This fails every time even with the right user and password. Simply using the SAM format (Domain\User) works. So simple, yet so annoying. Can't believe I missed this. Thanks to everyone who helped.

• User profile service fails

  I have Windows 7 and 3 drives on my HDD. The second drive is D:\, and there are some files in that. I decided to install 8.1 Enterprise so I installed it in dual boot manner beside 7 and in D:\ drive which as I said was not empty and when installing 8.1, I didn't format the D:. I installed 8.1 successfully in D:\ and it was working fine. One time which I came up with 7, I thought I should arrange the 8.1 folders in D: to be separated from the other non-8.1 folders, so I created a new folder named it "Windows 8.1" and cut all 8.1 folders and pasted them into that new folder. Now my D: drive was arranged. When I restart the PC, I selected the 8.1 to start with, but it didn't come up like before and instead, it shows now a blue screen (not the blue screen of death!) and the time is shown in left-down corner of it. When I click the screen this message appears: The User Profile Service service Failed the sign-in. User Profile can not be loaded. I know two things: 1- The problem is to do with that cutting and pasting the 8.1 folders to be arranged. And 2- If I reinstall the 8.1, the problem will be solved (but if I don't do that cutting and pasting again!) Is there any simpler way to solve the issue and have the two OSs with each other?

  I have a Nagios server which monitors many servers, a number of the servers is used for QA matters. I'd like to allow the QA team access to the Nagios UI and i want them to be able to view only monitors which are related to their work. More than that, these servers which i want the QA team to monitor should be displayed for the admins group as well (as it is configured at the moment) in addition to the QA team. Is that doable?

• Web service for checking out / leasing a token

  I run a web site on AWS that has a number of web servers (say 4 of them) running behind a load balancer. For this particular web site, I have one license key of New Relic for doing instrumentation. At any one time, I only want one of the 4 web servers to be using the key. If that server goes offline, I want one of the remaining web servers to be able to begin using the license key. Does anyone know of a service that would let me manage this process? The service would not particularly need to store the key itself but rather just manage the fact that only one web server can lease out the right to use the key at any time. Something where the web servers would have to come back every few minutes and renew their lease, and if they don't it becomes available to someone else. I just realized I could maybe accomplish a hacked version of this using a file on S3, but that doesn't prevent race conditions / etc and is definitely hackish. Any thoughts welcome. FWIW, this site is built on Ruby on Rails. Thanks! JP
