• MacOSX VirtualHost: "You don't have permission to access / on this server" error

  The Apache instalation of MacOSX is running Ok. I have tried to create a VirtualHost called test.local, but as soon as I uncomment from /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the line Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf , and try to access test.local virtualhost I get an error "You don't have permission to access / on this server". The VirtualHost configuration in /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf is: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.local DocumentRoot "/Users/username/Sites/Test/public" <Directory "/Users/username/Sites/Test/public"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> I have also include the VirtualHost in hosts file: 127.0.0.1 test.local

• RadBook for Silverlight now supports virtualization

  I am proud to announce that RadBook, along with RadGridView, RadTreeView, RadTreeListView, RadChart and RadScheduler, now supports virtualization. With previous versions, it would take up to 16 seconds to load 1000 pages, where now it takes just 2 seconds to load a set of 10,000,000 (10 million) items.   The cause of the performance boost is the way RadBook handles the unnecessary(non-visible) elements. As you probably know, while turning a page, only four pages are visible at any given moment in time. Previous versions of RadBook would just collapse the unnecessary elements, which had a significant impact on the initial loading time. The new version of RadBook now takes advantage of the VirutalizingPanel and creates only as many elements as necessary for the book to render properly. • Virtual Host under MacOSX not working

  I have setup a virtualhost for MacOSX Apache instalation. This are my steps: edit /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf removing comment from: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf edit /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf, added: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.local DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/Sites/Test/public" <Directory "/Users/myusername/Sites/Test/public"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> edit /private/etc/hosts added 127.0.0.7 test.local Restart Apache But the VirtualHost does not work. To further isolate the problem I check the same configuration with MAMP and the virtual host worked rigth, so the configuration files should be fine. What can be wrong?

• How do you get aware of new tools?

  How do you get aware of new tools (libraries, applications, etc)? This question is only about "getting aware" that some tool exist and could be used. Learning and trying is different issue. Right now I get most awareness from stackexchange and freshmeat sites. But I wonder if there are more efficient way. E.g. 80% of freshmeat projects are no-use for me, but it reasonable overhead, because tools that I find trough it save me days or even weeks. Here are some related, but a bit different questions: How much time do you invest in exploring new technology? How to become aware of new languages, techniques and methodologies? What website are you using most to keep you updated on software development?

• What should developers know about Windows executable binary file compression?

  I'd never heard of this before, so shame on me, but programs like UPX can compress my files by 80% which is totally sweet, but I have no idea what the the disadvantages are in doing this. Or even what the compressor does. Website linked above doesn't say anything about dynamically linking DLLs but it mentions about compressing DESCENT 2 and about compressing Netscape 4.06. Also, it doesn't say what the tradeoffs are, only the benefits. If there weren't tradeoffs why wouldn't my linker compress the file? If I have an environment where I have one executable and 20-30 DLL's, some of which are dynamically loaded an unloaded fairly arbitrarily, but not in loops (hopefully), do I take a big hit in processing time decompressing these DLL's when they're used?
