• Is it worthwhile learning about Emacs? [closed]

  Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?

  Hey all, I know very little about JD Edwards. I have a client asking how to call an API we supply (as COM, C#, REST) from JD Edwards. I'm not getting much in terms of high quality answers from their tech guy... so I thought I'd ask here. Can JD Edwards call C#? Can JD Edwards call Java? Can JD Edwards call a Unix scipt? Can anyone point me towards anything useful in terms of developer/customization documentation? Thanks!

• Missing output when running system command in perl/cgi file

  I need to write a CGI program and it will display the output of a system command: script.sh echo "++++++" VAR=$(expect -c " spawn ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no $USER@$HOST $CMD match_max 100000 expect \"*?assword:*\" send -- \"$PASS\r\" send -- \"\r\" expect eof ") echo $VAR echo "++++++" In CGI file: my $command= "ksh ../cgi-bin/script.sh"; my @output= `$command`; print @output; Finally, when I run the CGI file in unix, the $VAR is a very long string including \n and some delimiters. However, when I run on web server, the output is ++++++ ++++++ So $VAR is missing when passing in the web interface/browser. I know maybe the problem is $VAR is very long string. But anyway, is there anyway to solve this problem except writing the output to a file then retrieve it from browser? Thanks if you are interested in my question.

• How to handle a C# console application terminating?

  If I have a console application, is there any way I can handle the following: Ctrl-C (I know the answer to this. Using Console.TreatControlCAsInput and Console.CancelKeyPress) Session termination, such as when someone logs off Process exit, such as when someone uses the task manager to close the application. I know that if I was writing a unix application, I would handle various signals to catch the request to close (SIGTERM from memory), but I also know I need to handle these messages pretty quickly and exit before the system does a kill -9 (SIGKILL). But for a C# console application, I'm not sure how to do this.

• java OutofMemoryError

  I am running the following command on unix box. java -Xms3800m -Xmx3800m org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process -out Cust.txt -in test13l.xml -xsl CustDetails.xsl It is a java command, which calls Xalan processor to parse through the xml file (test131.xml) using the xsl stylesheet (CustDetails.xsl) and returns Cust.txt. The command works fine and the output is generated. It takes 12 minutes to process an xml file size of 1.1 GB. It takes 22 minutes to process a file size of 1.44 GB. However, when I try to process a file size of 1.66 GB, it errors out with the following message: (Location of error unknown)XSLT Error (java.lang.OutOfMemoryError): null I have increased the java heap size to 3800 not sure what I can do more. • XAMPP or MAMP on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)

  I just bought a new MacBook Pro which comes with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (Mac OS X 10.6.2). I am used to using XAMPP as my local development server on XP. Since Mac OS X is based on Unix, I was thinking on activating/installing all the necessary stuff as I would normally do on Linux. However, I am not quite ready to be playing around with the system at this point so having an external package would be a nice temporary solution I think. The question is whether I should go with MAMP or XAMPP. Does anybody have any suggestions? The Pro and Cons I suppose. As far as I know, Mac OS X comes with Apache2 and PHP5. Would MAMP or XAMPP modify the existing Apache and PHP installation? Any comments on how I should proceed? PS: Eventually I would use the default installation of Apache and PHP, and install a binary package of MySQL but time for development is an essence and I don't have time to familiarize myself with Mac OS X.

• Running Perl Scripts on servers that don't have the modules

  I need to run a perl script to gather system information that will be deployed and executed on different unix servers. Right now I am writing it and testing it, and I'm receiving this error. Can't locate XML/DOM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/local/share/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 .) at test.pl line 7. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at test.pl line 7. So I am simply using XML::DOM which should be part of Perl but it isn't for this version on this particular server which is 5.10.1. Anyways, is there a way I can create and design my script and package modules into it while keeping the .pl extension, which is the requirement for this script?

  Hi All, Im wanting to organize a series of dates in the following format. As a bit of context, the dates are the dates of upcoming events that can be added by my users. The format: January 2011 date - event date - event date - event February 2011 date - event date - event date - event with all events in a given month, arranged by the date on which they occur. All of my event dates are stored in my database as unix timestamps. Problem is, i dotn know where id start to develop a function that would order all of my events in this way. Can anyone help me out?   Is it possible to retrieve the complete message source (similar tu Unix Mbox format) using Zend_Mail_Storage_Pop3 from the Zend Framework? I'm using the following code to retrieve messages: $mail = new Zend_Mail_Storage_Pop3(array('host' => 'localhost', 'user' => 'test', 'password' => 'test')); echo $mail->countMessages() . " messages found\n"; foreach ($mail as $message) { echo "Mail from '{$message->from}': {$message->subject}\n"; } It looks like the $mail object contains the message already split up into fields (ie. headers, contents, etc.). Is there any way to retrieve the original message source? I would like to be able to store it so if I need to parse the message again using a different tool, I will have the necessary information.

  Hi, We are planning to migrate our DB to Oracle.We need to manually check each of the embedded SQL is working in Oracle as few may follow different SQL rules.Now my need is very simple. I need to browse through a file which may contain queries like this. String sql = "select * from test where name="+test+"and age="+age; There are nearly 1000 files and each file has different kind of queries like this where I have to pluck the query alone which I have done through an unix script.But I need to convert these Java based queries to Oracle compatible queries. ie. select * from test where name="name" and age="age" Basically I need to check the syntax of the queries by this.I have seen something like this in TOAD but I have more than 1000 files and can't manually change each one.Is there a way? • Using Yii framework, what would be a right way to process an attribute before displaying it using CH

  Say I have this line of code in the view. <?php echo CHtml::activeTextField($model,'start_time'); ?> start_time is a UNIX timestamp. When just displaying it in a view I can apply functions like date() on it. Where should I apply the formatting when I'm displaying it in a form, by using the above line of code? (This case of timestamps/dates might be special, but I'm also interested in how would one go about if it wasn't a date and I just want to work with "value in database" < "different representations of the value in different views. • editing a file with vim that has no EOL marker on the last line but has CRLF line endings

  I often have to edit script files, the interpreter for which treats files that have an EOL marker on the last line of the file as an error (i.e. the file is treating CRLF as "newlines", not as "line endings"). Currently, I open these files in Vim using binary mode (-b on the command line). It autodetects the lack of EOL on the final line and sets the "noeol" option appropriately, which prevents it from writing an EOL on the last line. Because the file has CRLF line endings, I get lots of ^Ms at the end of my lines (because it interprets only Unix-style line endings in binary mode, it seems). I can't open it in text mode because the "noeol" option is ignored for non-binary files. This is very annoying, and I always have to remember to manually type the ^M at the end of each line! Is there some way I can force it to accept DOS-style line endings in binary mode, or force it to listen to the EOL option in text mode?

• Portable C++ library for IPC (processes and shared memory), Boost vs ACE vs Poco?

  Hi, I need a portable C++ library for doing IPC. I used fork() and SysV shared memory until now but this limits me to Linux/Unix. I found out that there are 3 major C++ libraries that offer a portable solution (including Windows and Mac OS X). I really like Boost, and would like to use it but I need processes and it seems like that this is only an experimental branch until now!? I have never heard of ACE or POCO before and thus I am stuck I do not know which one to choose. I need fork(), sleep() (usleep() would be great) and shared memory of course. Performance and documentation are also important criteria. Thanks, for your Help!

• telling java to accept self-signed ssl certificate

  It looks like a standard question, but I couldn't find clear directions anywhere. I have java code trying to connect server with probably self-signed (or expired) certificate. It gives something like this [HttpMethodDirector] I/O exception (javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException) caught when processing request: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target As I understand, I have to play around with keytool and tell java that it's ok to allow this connection. But all comments I've found assume I'm fully proficient with keytool, like "generate private key for server and import it into keystore". And I'm not. Is there anybody who could post detailed instructions? I'm running unix, so bash script would be best. Not sure if it's important, but code executed in jboss. Thanks a lot!

• Facebook links to my site resolve as 403 forbidden

  Hi I'm experiencing a super weird problem. Whenever I post links to my website on Facebook, they come up as Forbidden. The site itself works great and I have no seen this when linking on other sites. Could this be a server misconfiguration? Any thoughts on where to look? here's some Info: I have a dedicated server running WHM 11.25.0 i have 2 sites hosted here using cPanel 11.25.0 the error msg: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.   I have discovered through trial and error that the MATLAB engine function is not completely thread safe. Does anyone know the rules? Discovered through trial and error: On Windows, the connection to MATLAB is via COM, so the COM Apartment threading rules apply. All calls must occur in the same thread, but multiple connections can occur in multiple threads as long as each connection is isolated. From the answers below, it seems that this is not the case on UNIX, where calls can be made from multiple threads as long as the calls are made serially.

  I would like to port a few applications that I use on Linux to Windows. In particular I have been working on wdiff. A program that compares the differences word by word of two files. Currently I have been able to successfully compile the program on windows through Cygwin. However, I would like to run the program natively on Windows similar to the Project: UnixUtils. How would I go about porting unix utilities on a windows environment? My possible guess it to manually create the ./configure file so that I can create a proper makefile. Am I on the right track? Has anyone had experience porting GNU software to windows?

  Hey, I'm trying to seek through a RandomAccessFile, and as part of an algorithm I have to read a line, and then seek backwards from the end of the line E.g String line = raf.readLine(); raf.seek (raf.getFilePointer() - line.length() + m.start() + m.group().length()); //m is a Matcher for regular expressions I've been getting loads of off-by-one errors and couldn't figure out why. I just discovered it's because some files I'm reading from have UNIX-style linefeeds, \r\n, and some have just windows-style \n. Is there an easy to have the RandomAccessFile treat all linefeeds as windows-style linefeeds?

  I've installed PostgreSQL and PostGIS, and now I'm trying to follow these instructions: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/gis/install/#spatialdb-template But I keep getting the following error, both in the command prompt and in Cygwin: C:\Users\Home>createdb -E UTF8 template_postgis createdb: could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"? And I know PostgreSQL is running, because I'm using it right now! Installing open source applications can sometimes be so frustrating... I'll be very grateful for your help!

• ODBC Connection Pooling

  I have inherited a suite of .Net c# applications from a developer which talk to an Informix database on a unix server. Instead of using the usual practices for managing the database connections (disposable pattern / "open late / close early"), the code seems to open one ODBC connection when each app loads and doesn't close it. Connection pooling is turned via the ODBC administrator. Is there any way of seeing how many ODBC connections are open? What is the effect of turning off connection pooling? Am I right in thinking the .NET framework will use connection pooling anyway?
