• Can't log into Windows XP

  Immediately after choosing an account, and starting to log in, it shows the logging out message and goes back to the account selection display. This even happened in safe mode with the administrator's account. So I can't log in. I'll be using a Linux Live CD to extract the laptop's data. Could this be a virus or a hard disk problem? And what should I do?

• How to stop windows 7 from asking to format a disk?

  Hey guys, I have this USB flash drive with a Linux partition that I use inside VirtualBox. Each time I insert it into the USB port, windows keeps asking if it should format it. Is there anyway to disable Windows from asking that? Thanks. EDIT: Disabling auto-run has not resolved the problem unfortunately. Windows will still check if the disk contains a partition it knows about, and ask to format if it doesn't know it. Really nice try though, any other ideas?

• Put Google Chrome, AVG on a flash drive

  I often install programs on others' computers such as LibreOffice, which, when they only have a dial-up connection, takes forever to download. So instead I keep it on a flash drive and install it from there. This works fine for LibreOffice. However, some programs, when you download them all you are downloading is a downloader - when you download ChromeSetup and open it, a installer window opens which actually downloads Chrome. Dial-up users then see that it will take 4 hours. Another example is AVG free antivirus - you download an installer, which when opened actually downloads AVG. However this doesn't work too well for dial-up users. How do I put the entire program of things like Chrome and AVG on a flash drive for fast installation on others' slow connections?

  I would like to run ubuntu on my external hard drive. I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open. What is the reason for this and how can i get the ubuntu run from whichever machine i plug in the external usb hard disk. Thanks a lot for your answers in advance. Best regards Bhavan

• Deleting Windows 8 install

  I have a windows 7 pc, and I had installed windows 8 on an SSD, so it was the only partition on that SSD. I've now realised that I never use it, so I went to uninstall it and followed these steps. The PC now boots into 7, as expected, however I can't delete or format the drive that has windows 8 on it. The format dropdown selection is greyed out, and I tried to just simply delete all of the files and use the disk as is, but as windows 8 isn't there, I no longer have rights to delete all of the files, apparently. The drive in question has 3 partitions, one that I made for the win8 system, and 2 smaller system-created partitions (one 300MB recovery and 1 100MB EFI) How do I go about formatting the drive?

  I bought this laptop used from a friend. The laptop has 500gb of storage; however, the drive is partioned. The C: drive has an allocated space of 50gb whereas the partition has 396gb allocated to it. How do i either take some of the space from the partition and move it to the C: drive, or get rid of the partition? I've done some searching and people say I'm supposed to be able to use "Disc Management" to "delete volume," but when i right click on the partition the "delete volume" is not enabled. • Windows 7 won't recognize my second hard drive after reinstall

  I recently suffered a total hardware crash on my windows C: drive. Fortunately, I had a spare disk on hand and set about reinstalling. For some reason, during the install it decided to declare my second windows drive as the booting drive, but once the installation was completed it completely and utterly refuses to acknowledge the filesystem -- I'm not even seeing a drive letter, while it /does/ find the linux partitions on the other two drives (even if it can't read any of them). My first (and most important) question: How can I get windows to re-acknowledge the drive, preferably without losing all the data on it? My second question: How can I tell windows to set up its boot loader on the new C: drive?

• Windows 7 is shutting down unexpectedly, according to the logs.

  Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1.   I have installed the freenect library from openkinect.org. With that library there is a demo application which you can run from the terminal to test out the Kinect. However when I run this command I get the following output: richard@behemoth:~$ sudo freenect-glview Kinect camera test Number of devices found: 1 Could not claim interface on camera: -6 Could not open device This particular error is thrown by the library libusb by the function libusb_claim_interface and the error -6 corresponds to the LIBUSB_ERROR_BUSY. So my guess is that it has something to do with mounting the usb, rather than specifically the freenect library or the Kinect itself. So my question is how can I find out what resource is using this interface and how can I free it so that I can access it? • How to configure Farsun USB barcode scanner to not auto-trigger

  At my company we have several USB barcode scanners. I'm not sure exactly what model they are, but I think they are the FG9800 from Farsun because that's what they look like on the exterior. They came with a programming manual that is very similar to this document from the Farsun website. When I scan the "Output Firmware Version" barcode, my scanner types the following into the computer: Farsun V2.00 2011-01-01 Is it possible to configure these scanners so they only read barcodes in response to the trigger button being pressed? I don't want them to automatically read barcodes. Additionally, I want this setting to be remembered while the scanner is turned off. Since this scanner only has a USB port, the only way to configure it that I know of is to scan bar codes from the manual (or make your own). I have tried scanning the configuration bar codes for Single Scan (013300), Single Scan No Trigger (013301), and Laser/CCD Timeout - 5 Seconds (0134005) from this document. Sometimes (but not often) this puts the scanner in to the right mode, where it only scans when the button is pressed. Unfortunately, the scanner seems to always leave this mode when it is power cycled. I have also scanned the "Reset Configuration To Defaults" barcode (0B) many times. We have three different scanners like this and I have not been able to successfully configure any of them. If the things I want are not possible with these Farsun-based scanners, is there some other scanner we can use?

• ClearType setting ignored in Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Pro

  I have a VM set up through Windows Virtual PC for Windows XP Pro and I have been completely unable to get ClearType to work. I have turned it on in the Display - Appearance - Effects dialog but it seems like it completely ignores this. All text is still without any anti-aliasing. Even setting it to normal smoothing doesn't work. If I disable Integration Features, it seems to work, but then I lose a lot of nice features. What's weirder, is that the Windows XP Mode installed with Windows Virtual PC (this is separate from my XP Pro VM) works with both ClearType and Integration Features just fine. I turned it on the same way and it works like a charm, no problems. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit as the host OS and have the latest (to my knowledge) Windows Virtual PC installed. The only funny business I can think of is that I've enabled 24-bit color via the Group Policy setting inside each XP virtual machine (both Pro and the stripped down XP mode copy). This is a fairly well-known trick documented all over the web, but here's a typical post about it.

• Burn bootable iso image to USB stick using dd: Won't boot (despite USB first in boot sequence)

  I have installed Ubuntu on a Lenovo Thinkpad R500 2732, and I must update the BIOS. On the Lenovo website, I am offered this: BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad R500 I guess a bootable CD that would do a BIOS update is indeed what I need. (still wondering why it says "Windows" though... if it is bootable should not it be OS-agnostic?) Not wanting to waste a CD, I copied the image to my USB stick: sudo dd if=/home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M And rebooted, after making sure USB is first in the boot sequence. PROBLEM: It does not boot. Did I forget one step? Details about the iso image (readme): ls -lh 7yuj40uc.iso 25M file 7yuj40uc.iso /home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso: # ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data '7YUJ40US ' (bootable) (Scroll to the right: it says "bootable") UNetbootin does not work because it is not a Linux image. Some people on the Internet advise to copy the content of the ISO and do other steps. This ISO has zero ISO content so it would not work. If I mount the ISO, I can see it contains zero files.

  I had a Western Digital External 1TB drive, which I was accessing via USB. I decided one day, that I would prefer to mount the HDD in my case, and access it via SATA interface. So I took it apart, and the actual mounting was a breeze. The only thing is, I think the device has some default power saving features, which means the device tends to stop spinning when idle for (x) amount of time. This creates delays when I am accessing the HDD. Is there anyway I can turn off these power saving features for this HDD?

• PS/2 to USB adapter doesn't work with Model M keyboard

  I bought a server about 3 months ago from a friend, and I have only had time to tinker with it in the last week. I noticed that this server doesn't have any PS/2 ports, which meant configuring it was near impossible. I don't have any USB keyboards in the house, I only have an IBM Model M keyboard (built 1994) and another IBM keyboard that was built circa 2001. Both of them have PS/2 connections. I bought an adapter off eBay, and when I used it with the Model M keyboard the three lights on the keyboard flashed for a split second, but then the keyboard is then unresponsive. I can bash away at the keys for ages and nothing will happen. The same applies to the later built IBM keyboard. What could I do to make the adapter work? I am getting the loan of a USB keyboard in two weeks time, but I'd like a more permanent solution without having to rely on getting the loan of a keyboard every time I have to perform maintenance on the server. • Windows xp recovery console without Ntfs.sys? (0x00000024 BSOD)

  I have two physical disks in a computer, for simlicity lets call them C and D. C: got Windows XP and D: got some data. The problem is that whenever i have D: connected i can't boot windows. I get some BSOD called 0x00000024/NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. Same thing if i boot up windows with D: disconnected and then connect it once windows has loaded. The KB article about this problem says that i have to run chkdsk but i can't get to somewhere where i can run this because i get a BSOD whenever the disk is connected! Even the recovery-console BSODs if D: is connected. The final option in the KB is to boot the computer on Windows 2000 Setup disks where you edit some file to manually disable the ntfs.sys driver and then run chkdsk. The problem is that i don't have any floppy drive. Is there any way to boot the built in recovery console with ntfs.sys disabled or to burn the floppy version to a cd after you've extracted and modified it on the harddrive? For example: If I want to do a safe distribution of original music for demostration purposes I will need several requisites: 1) The music should be heard using a simple procedure like selecting the name of each song on a playlist of a mediaplayer. 2) The portable media, ussually a portable USB drive, must hide for complete and should make unaccesible the files that contain the audio data to anything but the mediaplayer, that must be in the first partition, the one that is visible. 3) Considering that´s impossible to really hide files in a non-hidden partition, a second hidden partition should be created in the USB drive and the audio data will be stored there. 4) The trick is to read the audio data files stored in the hidden partition with a mediaplayer stored in the visible partition, the media player also should be a complete standalone program and independent from any library of the operating system except of the OS audio system. 5) The hidden partition should have a copy protection scheme that could impede to do copies of the data or create working ISO images of it. I know that this description could not be technically accurate but it has a complete logic from the needs of a music producer against the problem of piracy. The philosophy that surrounds the concept is to transform a virtual object like a digital string of audio in a solid object like the analog vinyl discs are.

• Dual boot windows 8 pro and windows 7 on XPS 8500 Special Edition

  I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying "Where do you want to install windows at?" pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on. I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." resolved above issue by running setup from the source folder on the install disk instead of booting from DVD. Was able to locate my new partition and start install. It completes the first step of "Copying windows files" just fine but then on the next step "Getting files ready for installation" my computer restarts and attempts to load windows 8 but keeps telling me my pc needs to restart. This keeps going on in an infinite boot loop. Please help, this has been a nightmare!

• Creating a bootable USB drive from a distro split over two DVD ISOs

  I am searching and not finding the right way to do this. Please note, I don't think I'm trying for anything strange here. I just want to make a bootable USB stick of a single OS that happens to be larger than one DVD and happens to be larger than FAT32 will allow for in a single file. On our slow connection I spent a long time downloading CentOS 5.9's two DVD ISOs: CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.4 GB) CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (718 MB) I have a USB stick that I want to somehow get these two ISOs on. Since the first one is 4.4 GB, I can't use ISO2USB because it insists on FAT32. I cannot find an alternative that lets you specify more than one ISO image--of the same distro, I'm not trying for some fancy multi-boot thing--to put on the same stick. I guess I should have downloaded the CD ISOs, but I thought I was "saving time" because then I wouldn't have as many files to run through the md5 checker. There's no IMG file of the whole thing (only a net install version, which I don't want--I want to pre-download everything) otherwise I would've gone for that. So, given that I have these two DVD ISOs, how can I get them on a stick that will boot and make use of both of them properly to install CentOS somewhere? Again, I don't think this is anything out of the ordinary, yet I can't find software/docs that seem to support this. Am I stuck re-downloading everything in CD-sized ISOs just to do this? I found this, but it doesn't run on Windows. I am using Windows to prepare the stick.

  I need to store 100k files (around 40GB) in a USB drive. Each file has a unique int id (e.g 45000). Option one is to put all files in a single folder: root/ root/1.pdf root/2.pdf root/3.pdf ... root/567.pdf root/568.pdf root/569.pdf ... root/10001.pdf root/10002.pdf root/10003.pdf ... root/99998.pdf root/99999.pdf root/100000.pdf Option two is to create a [1-9][0-9]* folder hierarchy based on that id: root/ root/1/file.pdf root/2/file.pdf root/3/file.pdf ... root/5/6/7/file.pdf root/5/6/8/file.pdf root/5/6/9/file.pdf ... root/1/0/0/0/1/file.pdf root/1/0/0/0/2/file.pdf root/1/0/0/0/3/file.pdf ... root/9/9/9/9/8/file.pdf root/9/9/9/9/9/file.pdf root/1/0/0/0/0/0/file.pdf Which option will scale better? I can understand that the second option will require tons of folders but each folder will at most contain 10 folders and 1 file. Maintenance will not be an issue since everything will be controlled by an application. Note that this is a USB drive on linux and based on the above I'd also like to know whether I should go with FAT32 or NTFS.

• Problems with USB-Devices using VDR

  Hey Guys, I'm using VDR on vSphere4. It works sucessfully. I've already backuped several VMs with VDR and I like it very much. But now we got a problem. We have 2 VMs, using an USB-Device Server with a stick plugged in, which is definetely need by these 2 VMs for Licensing and so. Every time, I start the Backup process, the VMs lost the communication to the USB-Server and its stick after building the snapshot and while online. Because of that, the software on these VMs can't work correctly. I have to restart both Machines to solve this problem. These fact is bad for an automatic backup. Does VDR have a special function for those cases or is something like this already known? It would be no problem, to shutdown the servers for building snapshots on Saturday or Sunday. Can VDR initiate a shutdown before starting the backup process? Otherwise I must try to use scripts, but that wouldn't be so nice. Thanks a lot for your help.

• Plug-in device to front USB computer *sometimes* restarts

  I've got a strange problem that very occasionally (maybe once a month) when I plug-in something to the front USB on my computer, the computer suddently restarts. This also happens when I touch the front USB ports sometimes. This has been going on for a few years and a lot of the components in my PC have changed. I thought it was my home wiring, but I moved last year and it still happened. I thought maybe it was the motherboard, but that was upgraded 9 months ago and it still happens. I thought it was my case, but I changed that recently and it still happens. I thought maybe it was my PSU, but I upgraded that yesterday and it still happens. I'm pretty sure this is an electro-static thing, but I thought that modern computers have protection against this sort of thing. Maybe I should move my case off the floor (carpet) and stop wearing songs all the time. Edit: Just to clarify this is a computer that I built. The components have been upgraded throughout the years and it's not much the same computer anymore. This doesn't happen very often, but it is annoying, because I don't know what the cause is. Anyone have any ideas?
