• Which software to keep track of my project?

  I'm about to start the first real phase of my game development which will consist of the acquisition of information, resources and the definition of where I want to go and what I will need for that. I just want to make sure that I'm prepared as best as possible before I actually start development. I don't like the thought of using Microsoft Word or Excel for my project management... I already worked with MS Project but I don't think it fits my needs. I need a software where I can easily maintain project steps, milestones, important issues, information about technologies and engines I use, as well as simple notes and thoughts I just want to write down. I usually prefer a whiteboard for stuff like that but unfortunately it's not a persistent way of storing. ;) Also writing it down the old-school way is something I can think of, but only for quick notes... Which software do you use for that? Are there commonly used programs? Is there any free software at all?

• Where does jQuery fit-in with frameworks like JavaScriptMVC, BackboneJS, SproutCore and Knockout?

  I have been happily using JQuery for the last 2 years and have been quite sucessful creating some really cool functionality with it...so I am very comfortable with it. I also beleive the future of the web will continue on the current client-side path. However... The next challenge seems to be coming in the form of various controller frameworks: KnockoutJS, BackboneJS, SproutCore, JavaScriptMVC (the list goes on). Additonally, there are some great AMD Loader tools for use like RequireJS or LabJS etc. However, jQuery now has define and then capabilities baked-in. It's getting harder-and-harder to keep track of it all... And now, my task seems to be to evaluate/decide-on a strategic-direction for using some form of either an MVC or MVVM framework client-side...but I have so many questions. Where does JQuery fit-in with the various controller-frameworks mentioned above? Is JQuery used alongside each or do some of them have their own 'JQuery-styled version' baked-in? Are tools like RequireJS still needed if you implement one of the various controller-frameworks mentioned above? Does the define and then capabilities baked-into JQuery now supercede the AMD Loader mentioned above? Which one seems most modular? (see notes below) NOTES: One thing I don't want in any future-framework is the requirement of having to take-in vast amounts of functionality that I don't use. Meaning, I would rather use a framework that is truly modular. For example, to use jQuery UI you have to take-in a lot other core libraries that you might not actually use. I will be experimenting with each one, but some REAL feedback would be great. I've seen some 'similar' questions, but none have really answered the above skew. Thanks in advance!

  About 5 face to face interviews, 4 telephone ones and except for the two weeks Census Job. But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+  and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing).    Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study.   I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon.  I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job.   I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on.  Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test.    As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

• SFTP permission denied on files owned by www-data

  I have a pretty standard server set up running Apache and PHP. An app I am running creates files and these are owned by the Apache user www-data. Files that I upload via SFTP are owned by my own user charlesr. All files are part of the www-data group. My problem is that I cannot modify or overwrite any of the files via SFTP which are owned by www-data, even though charlesr is part of the www-data group. I can modify the files no problem via a SSH session. So I'm not sure what to do. How do I give my SFTP session permissions to modify www-data owned files? For a bit of background, these are the notes I wrote for myself when setting-up the server: Now set up permissions on `/var/www` where your files are served from by default: $ sudo adduser $USER www-data $ sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www $ sudo chmod -R g+rw /var/www $ sudo chmod -R g+s /var/www Now log out and log in again to make the changes take hold. The previous set of commands does the following: 1. adds the current user ($USER) to the `www-data` group; 2. changes `/var/www` to belong to the `www-data` group; 3. adds read/write permissions to the group that `/var/www` belongs to; 4. sets the SGID bit on `/var/www`; this final point bears some explaining. And then I go on to explain to myself what setting the SGID bit means (i.e. all files created in /var/www become part of the www-data group automatically). Btw, nothing feels sweeter than going back and reading your own detailed notes on the what, how and why of your own server set up when trying to troubleshoot like this - I recommend it highly to all beginners like myself :-)

• Oracle Worldwide Product Translation Group and Applications User Experience Working Together

  The Applications User Experience (UX) Mobile team has been extending its ethnographic research to even more countries. Recently, the team conducted research in Sweden, and I am pleased to say I made the connection for the UX team with the Oracle's Worldwide Translation Product Group (WPTG) local (that is, in-country) language specialists. It struck me that WPTG's local market knowledge and insight that we heard about at an Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in the UK in 2011 would be very valuable to the UX efforts while, at the same time, UX could afford WPTG an opportunity to understand our design and development direction so that linguistic resources (terminology, style guides, translatability guidelines, and so on) for any translation of our mobile solutions could be prepared in advance. I'm told by Brent White of the Mobile UX team that the co-operation was a big success.  A WPTG Swedish language specialist joined a couple of ethnographic sessions, taking great notes and turning them around very fast for the UX team. And of course, a great local insight into Swedish culture and ways of working was provided too, along with some nice socializing!  More research in more countries is planned. I am pleased to say that it incorporates the generic version of a fix, I originated that allows projects including Crystal Reports to be documented.Here is the relevant passage from the help file:"The default configuration for MRefBuilder has been updated to ignore the Crystal Reports licensing assembly (BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) if it fails to get resolved.   Oracle E-Business Proactive Support has created many new guided resolution documents that you may find helpful in resolving issues in your EBS applications.  These new documents are called “Search Helpers” and they guide you through your issue to a solution.  They are meant to be an easy and fast method to finding a relevant, complete solution. Hundreds of notes and service requests were reviewed and the best solutions to these known issues were selected.  For some issues, notes were updated to better clarify the solution.  In other cases, if a note with a solution did not already exist, one was created. • Let's do the Time Warp again!

  Once you start reading about Daylight Saving Time changes in MyOracleSupport you'll find still a lot of notes explaining this and that and back and forth. But sometimes there seems to be a bit too much information - and lacking clear instructions. Once a customer called that the "Time Zone Spaghetti" after reading MOS notes about DST for several hours ending up with the note where he has begun to read before still not clear what to do now I'm using usually the scripts from MOS Note:977512.1 as you'll just have to exchange the DST version you are upgrading to and it has everything you need to check and adjust the time zone data in the database - for instance after applying the DST V18 patch to your database's homes. As a reminder to myself when traveling I have stored a copy of the script part of that note here - and please note that this is not an official Oracle version. Always read and check the original MOS Note:977512.1 as it may have gotten changed in between and may contain changes or corrections and as it has a lot of more explainationary information than I could cover here. • iPhone Simulator 3.x not listed after upgrading to XCode 3.2.3 Beta4 with OS 4.0

  I've been having some problems, & since you guys are the smartest devs I thought I'd just ask you. When I last installed Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 2 (OS 4.0 support), it had all the iPhone Device & Simulator 3.x. Now, updated to Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 4 (OS 4.0 support), it no longer lists 3.x SDKs for either simulator or device in XCode. When I run an app that was written for 3.1.2, the current SDK is listed as "base SDK missing" I'm aware that 3.2.3 changes the BASE SDK to 4.0, but how come none of the 3.x devices are available either? When I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs The only two files available are: iPhoneSimulator3.2.sdk iPhoneSimulator4.0.sdk However, when I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport 3.0 3.0.1 3.1 3.1.1 3.1.2 3.1.3 3.2 4.0 (8A274b) I've tried re-installing the most recent XCode DMG to no avail. • iPhone Simulator 3.x not supported after upgrading to XCode 3.2.3 Beta4 with OS 4.0

  I've been having some problems, & since you guys are the smartest devs I thought I'd just ask you. When I last installed Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 2 (OS 4.0 support), it had all the iPhone Device & Simulator 3.x. Now, updated to Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 4 (OS 4.0 support), it no longer lists 3.x SDKs for either simulator or device in XCode. I'm aware that 3.2.3 changes the BASE SDK to 4.0, but how come none of the 3.x devices are available either? When I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs The only two files available are: iPhoneSimulator3.2.sdk iPhoneSimulator4.0.sdk However, when I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport 3.0 3.0.1 3.1 3.1.1 3.1.2 3.1.3 3.2 4.0 (8A274b)

• Oracle 10g express home page is not coming up

  Hello All: My Oracle 10g Express Edition , I can login in the SQL plus but I cannot login into oracle via SQL developer and cannot view the Home page at link http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex. This was working fine until yesterday. I have checked via (WINDOWS)netstat -ab and no other app is using the 8080 port. The only thing I did today was I changed my SQL server 2005 Developer edition from Windows authentication to Mixed Mode authentication. Can anyone let me know how to get the Oracle Web page and the SQL Developer to work. I will gratly appreciate that. Thanks! Adnan A.

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to use the Visual Studio 2010 Express editions to set up an ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application using SqlExpress + Entity Framework as the data access. I have both the "C# Edition" and "Web Developer Edition" installed. If I try to add a data source using the "C# edition", I'm missing the "Microsoft SQL Server" data source type. but Visual Studio 2008 Professional has it. as noted by another StackOverflow question, the "Web Developer Edition" has this. However, the Web Developer Edition doesn't support the Entity Framework items: . I'd want to stick with only the Express Editions. Is my use case one that Microsoft forgot about? What can I do here to use SqlExpress + MVC 2 + Entity Framework? Thanks! -Mike

  As a database architect, developer, and consultant, there are many questions that can be answered. One, though I was asked recently and still can't answer good, is... "What is one of, or some of, the best methods or techniques to keep database changes documented, organized, and yet able to roll out effectively either in a single-developer or multi-developer environment." This may involve stored procedures and other object scripts, but especially schemas - from documentation, to the new physical update scripts, to rollout, and then full-circle. There are applications to make this happen, but require schema hooks and overhead. I would rather like to know about techniques used without a lot of extra third-party involvement.

• Xcode custom project template creates only references to files

  Hi, I tried to create a custom project template for setting up unit testing. The problem is that when i create a new project based on this template it creates references to the template files : When i edit a file, it changes my template files instead of my actual project files ! When i delete my template, files from my actual project becomes red ! The project template is in : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Library/Xcode/Project Templates/Application/Test-based Application Reading some question on stack overflow i tried to install my template project in /Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Xcode/Project Templates But i cannot see my template when i create a new project.
