• Find out if there is a local user logged in when logging in over ssh

  I need to run some calculations on a machine that I can only access remotely but also serves as a work station. There are many of them and I want to pick a "free" one. Free means in this case that no one is logged in locally. My first try was the who command, but for some reason it only lists "selected" users and I can't really find out how they are selected. Next try: ps aux | cut -d " " -f1 | sort | uniq: better showing a bunch of demons but also the local user that was not displayed by who. My current solution is to go in and do ps aux | grep "gnome-session" which is better but still gives me a lot of junk. Ideally I am looking for something that I can include in my ssh profile that warns me about (active) local users when I log in.

  I just changed jobs and will soon be in charge of a custom-built ASP.NET CMS and website for a fairly large corporation with global offices. I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did. • Does NASA license the software that it develops?

  NASA provides a visualization software called Panoply. There is a Credits and Acknowledgments page that acknowledges and lists the licenses of software dependencies, but provides no information about its own license. I have looked at other software produced by NASA, including the source code for GISS and can not find any information about a licence. The closest information that I can find is in the FAQ for the global climate model EdGCM Global that says the code is in the "public domain" is it standard practice at NASA to release code into the public domain? are there exceptions? Can I assume that Panoply is public domain and can be used without restriction other than than those imposed by licenses of software dependencies? Is the absence of specific permission to reuse the code a concern (this issue was raised in the answer to a separate question) How common is this practice across government agencies?

  The Mojarra 2.1.2 release was cut a few days ago. Here are the full Maven coordinates : api, impl. You can also get to the release notes and to the list of bugs fixed in this release. This is scheduled for inclusion into the upcoming GlassFish 3.1.1 release. In fact it's already integrated in the latest promoted build (#8) which also includes woodstox 4.1.1. Weld 1.1.1.Final has already been integrated a few builds ago. The JSF team is now working on JSR 344 (JSF 2.2) for which you can get a status by visiting http://jsf-spec.java.net/ and the associated mailing lists. A first expert draft is now available.

• Should I use nodindex, follow or rel canonical?

  I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

• How should compound words be handled when coding? Is there a definitive list of compound words? [closed]

  QUESTION: How should you handle compound words when programming? Are there any good lists available online for developers of generally accepted technology-related compound words? I can see how this is highly ambiguous, so should I just use common-sense? EXAMPLE: I would be inclined to do this: filename NOT FileName or login NOT LogIn However, the microsoft documentation indicates that filename is not compound. • When to use an Array vs When to use a Vector, when dealing with GameObjects?

  I understand that from other answers, Arrays and Vectors are the best choices. Many on SE claim that Linked Lists and Maps are bad for video game programming. I understand that for the most part, I can use Arrays. However, I don't really understand exactly when to use Vectors over Arrays. Why even use Vectors? Wouldn't it be best if I simply always used an Array, that way I know how much memory my game needs? Specifically my game would only ever load a single "Map" area of tiles, such as Map[100][100], so I could very easily have an array of GameObjectContainer GameObjects[100][100], which would reserve an entire map's worth of possible gameobjects, correct? So why use a Vector instead? Memory is quite large on modern hardware.

  Is there a PHP/Perl/Python/... library for picking citations out of an HTML file and rendering a nice list of references at the bottom, like in Wikipedia? I'm developing a website with heavily-sourced content, and I'd really like to have automatically-generated lists of formatted references, like in Wikipedia. (Check out their philosophy page, and see how the superscript numbered citations interact with the references at the bottom. This is all dynamically generated, automatically ordered & linked.) They do it really well: the citations are linked to the references (which are backlinked to the citations), when you click on one of the links, the target is highlighted, etc. I'm tempted to build the site on MediaWiki just for this one feature, but it seems like overkill. Do I have any options?

• Adding a list of "recent articles" affects SEO

  We have a site which has a sidebar with sections (or "widgets" if you like) showing stuff like "Recent Articles", "Other Articles by this User", "Similar Articles" etc. The issue is, Google seems to take these links very seriously. In fact, if I have only a single article which is closely related to a certain phrase (and several other pages link to it in their sidebars), when I do a Google search, it lists all those other pages highlighting that one link to the page that should actually be the most relevant one. And these pages don't even mention the phrase anywhere else. It there a common approach with adding these sidebar links? For example, I might add them through ajax after the page is loaded, but then crawlers will have harder time finding them?

• Scan-Line Z-Buffering Dilemma

  I have a set of vertices in 3D space, and for each I retain the following information: Its 3D coordinates (x, y, z). A list of pointers to some of the other vertices with which it's connected by edges. Right now, I'm doing perspective projection with the projecting plane being XY and the eye placed somewhere at (0, 0, d), with d < 0. By doing Z-Buffering, I need to find the depth of the point of a polygon (they're all planar) which corresponds to a certain pixel on the screen so I can hide the surfaces that are not visible. My questions are the following: How do I determine to which polygon does a pixel belong to so I could use the formula of the plane which contains the polygon to find the Z-coordinate? Are my data structures correct? Do I need to store something else entirely in order for this to work? I'm just projecting the vertices onto the projection plane and joining them with lines based on the pointer lists.

  Additional Drivers still lists the driver. Reports it as being activated but not in use. Prior to running updates, wireless was working fine. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

  Future time: Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I regularly have to fun fsck and reset my clock because it shows a 'future time' : Err.Msg. "superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED. • Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks [closed]

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

  while following one of the tutorials I needed to install a curl package. Here are my system configuration: Virtualbox 4.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on the virtual box. When I try the following: sudo apt-get install curl I see the following errors: [sudo] password for userMe: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package curl is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'curl' has no installation candidate userMe@userMe-ubuntu:~$ When I try the same on a direct installation of ubuntu on a laptop (not a virtual machine) there is no problem. I am assuming this may be because of network settings. Please note that my work PC is in a corporate network and uses auto proxy settings (using a .pac file) for internet access etc. Any help will be appreciated.
