• VMware ESXi 4 On-Disk Data Deduplication - possible and supported?

  Environment: We are running multiple web, database, and application servers which usually share a pretty common installation (gentoo linux) and similar configuration in VMware ESXi 4. The differences are usually only some installed features or differing component versions. To create a new server, I usually choose the most similar (by features) running server, rsync a copy of it into freshly mounted filesystems, run grub, reconfigure and reboot. Problem: Over time this duplicates many on-disk data blocks which probably sums up to several 10's of gigabytes. I suppose if I could use a base system as template with the actual machines based on top of that, only writing changed blocks to some sort of "diff image", performance should improve (increased cache hit rate) and storage efficiency should increase (deduplicated storage space). This would be similar to what ESXi already supports for RAM deduplication (page sharing). Question: Is there any way to easily do this on ESXi 4? I already share the portage tree via NFS but this would not work for the rootfs.

• Complete Public Folder Migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010

  We were in the process of migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 and hit a brick wall when trying to migrate Public Folders. After resolving issues with connectivity (and another issue with an old Exchange 2003 server being listed in AD that was causing the replication to fail) it finally appeared that messages were migrating from one server to another. However, we appear to have jumped the gun and ran MoveAllReplicas before the process was complete. We are now stuck with about 210MB of public folders on the new server from a 7GB public folder store on the old server. The messages appear to be available on the old server since running get-publicfolderstatistics shows that there are messages available. We have waited several days for the move to continue but we are stuck at 210MB. Is there something we can do to complete the replication so that all of the messages move from the old server to the new server?

• Why are some PNGs open in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency?

  Why are some 32 bit PNGs opened in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency? For instance, I grabbed a png icon file of the Stack Overflow logo at: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/wp-content/uploads/icon-so.png When opening it in Photoshop CS3, it apparently treats it as indexed color and gets rid of the alpha channel. The image on the right is a screen grab of the icon. Changing the Image mode in Photoshop to RGB doesn't change the image at all. I've tried this with a few other PNGs and it seems hit or miss. When viewed in other programs, it displays fine. left:png opened in Photoshop, right:screen grab of png from browser What gives?, does Photoshop not interpret the PNG file format correctly?

  hi,.. Can somebody help in understanding how Lun Provisioning is done in clariion based on client requirement. Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better. • How do I keep the URL in the address bar when stopping page load in Firefox

  Suppose I am visiting a page in Firefox and decide to go somewhere else and type the new URL manually into the address field, but the page fails to load, either because it times out, or because I hit Escape. Then Firefox removes my laboriously entered URL and replaces it with the URL of the current page. This is outrageous! I am pretty sure Firefox has changed this behavior lately, because this was one of the reasons I chose Firefox over IE back in the day. How can I turn off this annoying behavior? • Localhost permissions given different values in fireftp and cs4 dreamweaver

  While testing a file uploader on my localhost ( mamp on mac ) I've hit a problem. Trying to fix a folder permissions problem, I used CS4 Dreamweaver's permissions screen to set 0777 permissions. However these wouldn't apply and stayed stuck on 0, so I opened fireftp and accessed the folder in the local panel. The permissions there are 0777. So I have a folder that has permissions of 0 and 0777 at the same time. How can I resolve this and make sure the permissions are 0777?

• jQuery: On form input focus, show div. hide div on blur (with a caveat)

  Hi, I am able to make a hidden div show/hide when an input field is in focus/blur using the following code: $('#example').focus(function() { $('div.example').css('display','block'); }).blur(function() { $('div.example').fadeOut('medium'); }); The problem is I want div.example to continue to be visible when the user is interacting within this div. E.g. click, or highlighting the text etc. within div.example. However div.example fades out whenever the input is not in focus and the mouse is interacting with elements within the div. The html code for the input and div elements is as follows: <p> <label for="example">Text:</label> <input id="example" name="example" type="text" maxlength="100" /> <div class="example">Some text...<br /><br />More text...</div> </p> How do I make it such that the div.example only disappears when the user clicks outside the input and/or div.example? I tried experimenting with focusin/focusout to check the focus on <p> but that didn't work either. Would it matter that div.example is positioned directly below the input field #example using jQuery? • First time setting up a MySQL database.

  In trying to learn how to work with the LAMP stack, I've hit a wall with MySQL. I can't seem to find a good reference for the first time setup of MySQL to be used with Apache and python. So, my question is four-fold: 1) Under what circumstances should I create my first database. That is, what user do I use (Apache's http user? root?) 2)How do permissions work? 3) Do I have to do anything on the MySQL side to make MySQL talk to Apache, or MySQL to talk to Python/Django? 4) Is there a good resource online that describes setting all of this up? I've found a bunch for using a database once it's in place, but none for the initial setup? Notes: I'm trying to run my LAMP stack on a dedicated little box for testing/learning purposes only, so I don't have access to any DBA that could help me, as much as I'd like one.

I'm on Debian Lenny, with default sshd/OpenSSH. Is this e.g. a feature of SSH protocol that allows user shell to handle sftp commands? I can't wrap my head around this because usually OpenSSH needs sftp-server module (or the internal one in newer versions) - and this makes me think that sftp commands don't even hit the shell and are handled earlier or by different code path..

  My company has over service through Verizon, and AT&T Service in the area is "shoddy" at its best, so I haven't been able to join the "iPhone party" like so many of my fellow system administrators have been able to. That being said, this week finally a phone I like has hit Verizon, the HTC Incredible. (I've been waiting for the Desire or Nexus One, but after seeing spec sheets and reviews, HTC Incredible comes out ahead anyway).   Our old AirPort Extreme station hit EOL, so we decided to upgrade it to a Time Capsule. Along the way, we're trying to also set it up with a separate guest network and port forwarding/NAT, however we're having trouble setting it up so that the time capsule is handling the DHCP leases instead of the router. We've got DSL through Verizon through a Westell modem/router to the Time Capsule. Done the RTFM thing, and we haven't been able to get it to work. Can anyone explain how to get things set up properly for this configuration?

• IIS7 response size thresholds

  I have a customer who is attempting video playback via HTTP progressive download of very large files ( 1 GB). There is no problem once a file is cached at the edge via my CDN, but hits to my origin (first hits prior to edge-cache population) experience stalling and loss of sync between audio and video about an hour and a half into playback. This occurs pretty reliably at that point, suggesting that some threshold somehwere is getting hit. Are there IIS configuration knobs governing HTTP Response size? Other data points: I am unable to replicate this problem. I am looking at client bandwidth and last mile issues. I am looking at possible encoding recipe dependencies. But this problem never came up when we were using a "push" cache configuration (CDN-hosted origin), so something funky serverside at my origin seems like a likely culprit. Thanks ...

• What features do you miss most when switching from IntelliJ to XCode ?

  Hi, I've started to use XCode several months ago, after using IntelliJ for several years, and there are quite a few features that I really miss. XCode is not that bad, but it is lacking some basic stuff. To trigger the discussion, here are some of the features that I miss most, who knows maybe someone from Apple will bump into this post and steal some Ideas :) Source-level error-highlighting. The write-compile-fix cycle feels like going back in time 15 years ago to my early C days. Many errors can be spotted without having to compile and Java IDEs have been doing it for years. A decent debugger. This is a bit unfair because IntelliJ's debugger is the best I've used so far, but XCode's debugger is at least 5 years behind and Apple has a few more developers than JetBrains... Stronger re-factoring. A no-brainer I guess. XCode has some renaming capabilities (which they call re-factoring), but they are very few. Override method. This one is really amazing. XCode doesn't have an "override method" command which lets you choose the method you want to override from a super class or protocol. You need to go to the documentation or header file and start copy-pasting. Duplicate selected line(s). I've bumped into some posts that offer workarounds for this via custom key-binding, but none of them works, at least for me. Go to last edit point. Bummer! Come on Apple, this one is so easy to implement and so useful! A better open quickly feature. IntelliJ's quick find of classes/files/text is so much better... Turns out that my list goes on and on, so I'll stop here... What other features do you miss most in your transition to XCode?? Ori

  how is latency affected when multiple domains are using one single static IP address ? The scenario is in shared web-hosting By latency meaning the DNS lookup the client has to do. As far as I understand it, the browser would hit the root servers to try to figure out the IP Address and it belongs where and then when it comes to the correct server, it probably looks up some sort of table to determine which site names much and show that site as such via browser to the user. Is my understanding correct or backwards or what ?

• Cached Network Share Credentials?

  Hi, I have an issue in Windows 7 where I get the following error message when attempting to access an admin network share on a machine in another domain: "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again." Troubleshooting I've Done Start Run cmd net use * /DELETE Start Manage Windows Credentials Deleted all credentials I still receive the same error until I reboot my machine. After I reboot, it works fine. However, I am able to log into the admin share if I hit it by it's IP address. QUESTION My question is, is there somewhere else I should be looking for cached user credentials? Thanks, Brian

• Allow READ access to local folders in 2003SBS AD

  Have a SBS2003 client with a mess of a domain that is in process of being cleaned. But, for the life of me I cannot find a setting that will allow write access to the local hard disk for domain users with redirected profiles(to the server). This is needed only for one program that will not follow a symbolic link to the network path, instead it seems to be hard coded to the %appdata% folder but only on the c: drive.... So question is how can I allow "Domain users" write access to the local %appdata% directory? I have tried setting it manually on a machine but it kept resetting to RO no matter how many times I tried. Everytime I would uncheck the RO property it would reset sometime right after i hit OK. • how to pass domain name to backend with pound

  I am using pound as a way to decode SSL for the backend, but the bulk of the work is done on varnish (including virtualhost stuff). As a result, I need pound to just forward all other traffic to varnish verbatim, but it doesn't seem to do that. I am using the default configuration: ListenHTTP Address 1.2.3.4 Port 8080 ## allow PUT and DELETE also (by default only GET, POST and HEAD)?: xHTTP 0 Service BackEnd Address 127.0.0.1 Port 80 End End End So whenever I hit example.com:8080, it will always redirect to the default backend for varnish, which i assume was because the domain (host) header isn't send along. • Why does Finder keeping showing me menus in Spanish?

  This has happened before. A full reboot fixed it. This time: no go. The bottom of my menus, when I command-click on a file in Finder, are in Spanish. You can see a screen grab here: http://twitpic.com/10c63y How can I stop this from happening? I'm sure I inadvertantly hit a key combination that did this, but I'm stumped as to what that was. My System Preference settings for Language & Text have language set to Canadian English.

• Baffling Exchange 2010 issue , Outlook 2003

  Recently we upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The Exchange 2003 server is still up and active with a handful of users still there we are planning on migrating. Also we have mobile devices and a Blackberry BES server setup publishing to Exchange 2010 public folders free busy. The unfortunate issue is majority of our clients are still Outlook 2003. The issue seems to be hit and miss but sometime clients cannot view other client’s calendars. They get (cannot refresh free/busy) when they add another user and check their available times. This is also true with booking resources (conference rooms) . One thing we noticed is that the Blackberry BES seems to have created its own free/busy folders, so we have some users who use the BES on free/busy folder and other users who don’t use the BES on other free/busy folders. If any of the clients log-in via “Exchange 2010” web-access or with a Outlook 2007 client they can view the calendaring just fine. Thanks for your help Nick @Toshana

• Ubuntu Server login not recognizing the keyboard after entering username.

  I'm having similar issues with logging into ubuntu server. chief problem is that once I enter my user name & hit enter, I can't enter anything ffor my password - it won't accept any keystrokes until I press Ctrl+any key. Once I've pressed Ctrl+ any key, I'm able to type again, but have never been able to enter any more than 3 characters before the 60 sec time limit. This problem is present on fresh installs of both 10.04 & 9.10. Part of the problem is lkely to be my antique pc which is an old Emachines Trigems I850 based mbd and an equally ancient Nvidia 4x AGP video card. Initially I was going to install Ubuntu 10.10, but with ORCA running with both screen reader and full screen magnification crashed the system & smoked a stick of Rambus memory. Is there any fix to this problem? Jeff

• Multiple Copies of Windows Calculator

  Just did a clean install of Win7 x64. I have a Microsoft Ergo Keyboard 4000 and use the calculator key a lot. Previously I could hit it and get multiple copies of calculator to popup. Now it will only show one copy of calculator. I tried adding a shortcut to the calculator app but it has the same limitation. However if I click the calculator icon it will open a new one each time. How can I fix this so each time I press the calculator key it will open a new copy?

• Chrome drag and drop download links

  In Chrome, I used to be able to take a link to a file and just drag to a folder on my system. Chrome would then download whatever resource was at the URL for the link and put it into the folder dropped into. This was particularly handy when using Gmail. If there was an attachment, I could just click and drag it into a folder, and Chrome would download it for me to the correct place. Now I have to hit download, and then drag from the download bar when it is finished. Has this feature been removed? Is there any way to bring it back?

• Hidden characters inserted after pipe (|) followed by a space

  Very often, on my Mac, when I use the pipe (|) character followed by a space character, an invincible character will be inserted in between. This is especially annoying when using the terminal, as it makes commands invalid. If I type the following in iterm2, I often get the following: ls | cat zsh: command not found:  cat If I hit the up-arrow-key to get my previous command, and then remove and reinsert the space between | and cat, the command will work. When I copy paste the working and non working commands into a file, like this: non-working: ls | cat working: ls | cat and open it in Hex Fiend it shows the following: non-working: ls |¬†cat working: ls | cat I've also experienced the same kind of issue in SublimeText2 using the square brackets ([]) followed by a space. So I don't believe its an issue with iTerm2.
