  • Can't access certain web sites - reset router, any ideas?

    EDIT: This problem was resolved by my ISP - had to do with damaged fiber in one of their locations. Thanks to everyone that helped. Not sure if this is the right site (I'm a StackOverflow user) so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm having trouble connecting to certain sites on any of the 3 machines that are on my LAN. The following sites are returning "Problem Loading Page - The connection has timed out" Sourceforge.net CNet.com Microsoft.com OpenDNS.com even my company's webiste I was worried about possible malware/virus, but I don't think that is the case (given the inability to access my company's site and the fact that all 3 machines are having the same issues.) I've tried with IE8, FF, and Chrome I have reset my router (WRT54G) and my machine(s) multiple times. EDIT: It is also worth noting that this page spins constantly and no avatars show up (I'm assuming it is trying to access gravatar.com with no success.) EDIT: I have the same issues directly connected to the modem. So, any router config is probably not the issue I'm a programmer, not a network guy - any ideas?

  • Removing expired self-signed certificate in IE9 (created with IIS7.5)

    Over 1 year ago, I created a self-signed certificate in IIS 7.5 and exported it. I then installed it for IE9 (it may have been IE8 at the time), which worked fine until a year later when the certificate expired. I have put this off, but today I created a new self-signed certificate in IIS, exported it, and attempted to install it in IE9. The problem is that for whatever reason, IE cannot seem to forget about the old, expired certificate. Here's what I tried initially: Accessed my ASP.NET application and see the Certificate error. Clicked "View certificates". Clicked "Install Certificate" and then Next/Next/Finish. At this point, it says the import is successful, but it still only shows the expired certificate. I've tried simply double-clicking on the exported certificate on my desktop. Initially I chose to automatically select the certificate store, but then I tried it again and manually selected "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". I've also tried dragging/dropping the certificate over an IE window and clicking "Open". The process is then exactly the same as it is if I had double-clicked on the certificate, but I had hoped that this would somehow specifically tell IE to use this certificate. I tried opening MMC and with the Certificate snap-in, confirmed that the new certificate was added under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". It was also under my "Personal" certificates (I guess this is where it goes by default). Nothing worked, so I went through every folder in MMC and deleted the expired certificate. I also deleted the expired certificate in IIS. Nothing has worked. Any ideas? I see no clear resolution and I can't seem to find any posts related to this issue.

  • How can I change a search provider's URL in IE8?

    Now that Google finally allows searching over HTTPS, I switched all my browsers to use https://google.com by default (I documented my effort in my blog). The only browser I couldn't change the URL string in, is IE8. You can either add, remove, or change the priority of a search provider - as far as I've seen. Can anyone suggest a way to change the default search behavior in E8 to go to HTTPS? Thanks.

  • IPv6 scope id issue with IE

    I have an ASP.NET website that works with Firefox because FF doesn't need the % in the scope-id to be encoded (%25). The website also works on the same machine using IE because I can leave out the scope-id. However, to access the website from another machine in the network, I need to add the scope-id to the IPv6 address. For some reason, using the scope-id doesn't allow an authentication cookie to be created, and the website keeps going back to the login page. Anyone using IE7+ to access an ASP.NET website on a network using IPv6 with an encoded %?

  • Why is my system using port 4?

    I have Windows 7 and have noticed that my system is using port 4 to connect to a lot of different IP addresses. When it connects to them it is not for very long before it moves to another IP address. One night I sat and wrote down as many as I could and started checking whois to see where they were and they were from all over the world. I don't understand this. When I did a search on the net with this question. The only info I could come up with was, that port 4 is used by the US Army and a list of port assignments listed it as "unassigned". If anyone has any clues to what is going on... I would greatly appreciate any info I could get.

  • Circumvent proxy filter that disables the download of EXE files

    Do you know of a way to download exe files although the web proxy has a filter in place not to allow this? I have searched for a feature web site that does automatic file renaming. That should certainly make it possible. The solution would take a URL and then change the extension so that it would look to my proxy as I was downloading a .dat file (or similar). There are perhaps other solutions to this problem.

  • Issue with a secure login - Why am I being redirected to the insecure login?

    Im having some issues getting a website working at my place of work. The issue was rasised when a "double login" occurred from the secure login site. The second login was actually being prompted by the HTTP domain and not HTTPS. In essence the situation is like this: The user navigates to https://mysite.com/something The login prompt pops up Enter username and password The user is presented with ANOTHER login prompt (IE will say its insecure, and the address bar reflects that) If the user puts in their password the insecure one, they will login to the insecure site. if they hit cancel it will present them with a 401 page Navigating back to https://somesite.com/something will by pass the login prompt and log them in to the secure site automatically (cookie maybe) I'm a bit confused to why the user isnt being logged in properly the first time (redirected to non-ssl) but any consecutive login will be okay? I've been trying to use fiddler to see what is happening after the user puts in their password the first time and trying to get fiddler to automatically login to the site (with no luck) I believe the website in question is using Basic Digest authentication.   • How can I optimize my ajax calls to deliver at 60ms.

    I am building an autocomplete functionality for my site and the Google instant results are my benchmark. When I look at Google, the 50-60 ms response time baffle me. They look insane. In comparison here’s how mine looks like. To give you an idea my results are cached on the load balancer and served from a machine that has httpd slowstart and initcwnd fixed. My site is also behind cloudflare From a server side perspective I don’t think I can do anything more. Can someone help me take this 500 ms response time to 60ms? What more should I be doing to achieve Google level performance? Edit: People, you seemed to be angry that I did a comparison to Google and the question is very generic. Sorry about that. To rephrase: How can I bring down response time from 500 ms to 60 ms provided my server response time is just a fraction of ms. Assume the results are served from Nginx - Varnish with a cache hit. Here are some answers I would like to answer myself assume the response sizes remained more or less the same. Ensure results are http compressed Ensure SPDY if you are on https Ensure you have initcwnd set to 10 and disable slow start on linux machines. Etc. I don’t think I’ll end up with 60 ms at Google level but your collective expertise can help easily shave off a 100 ms and that’s a big win.

  • How to get IE to open JavaScript as text

    I am running IE 9. Up until last week sometime, if I would put the URL of a JavaScript file in the address bar, it would show the JavaScript as text in the browser window. Now when I do that, it wants to download the JavaScript file. How can I revert it to the previous handling? This is annoying since I'm developing a web application and if I can get it to display the .js files as text in the browser, then I can refresh it to force the cache to update. Update: I've tested on several co-workers machines. For some, browsing to .js files renders them in the browser (IE 9 in all cases). In others, it asks for a download. File associations don't seem to have any effect. One co-worker we tested with IE and Chrome. IE wanted to download it, but Chrome rendered it as text. This makes me think it's an IE issue and not an OS issue.

  • Copying Tables from a Website

    I have difficulty making an Excel-readable file from a table on a Website. The problems very specific to my question are: I have to use IE 7 to access the site. Excel is installed in another computer. The site does not let me view the HTML of the table. Normally, I would simply select the table I want and drag and drop it to Excel. Or, I would view the page source and copy the HTML data. Both do not work in this case. Is there any handy tool out there?

  • connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

    Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...

It's getting the IP by protocol. configuration is : ip : 192.168.1.2 subnet : 255.255.255.0 gateway : 192.168.1.1 Now I am curious, In IPV4 properties when instead of choosing "Obtain an IP address automatically", I choose "Use the following IP address" and configure everything same, why it do not work? Do DHCP do not work when we configure the IP manually? (operating system : windows-7) EDIT : After configuring the ip manually, when I used ipconfig/all , it's showing dhcp enabled : NO. I am not doing it. Why it got disabled automatically? and how to enable it?   • I think I disabled IE8's compatibility view

    I have an install of IE8 that doesn't have the compatibility view button next to the url bar. I vaguely remember during install that there was a question about whether it was to be available or not, I may have clicked no. Or maybe that was a dream. There are no options that I can see about it being available or not. Anyone know how to enable it? I'm about to try re-install but I'm hoping I can fix it without re-installing.   • Certain websites do not open. Instead a 1*1 image gets displayed

    When I try to visit certain websites like www.bidvertiser.com, www.buysellads.com, a white page shows up, the title bar displays the site name followed by (1x1) in brackets. When I right click, 'View Source' option appears disabled. The Save As.. option shows the file type to be gif. However, when I preview the site in Google search results ( by moving the mouse over ) the screenshot of the site displays well. This happens on all the three browsers on my computer: Chrome, Firefox and IE. What is the problem and how can it be resolved? EDIT: At some point of time, they probably worked on my computer! I think it is a more general problem. The same happens when I click on certain links in Google search results.
