• OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine

  Quick Background: iMac G5 (the white one; 4 years old?) Running Leopard 10.5.something. Time Machine started failing on me; and every time I touch the Finder, things beachball like crazy. Booting from install disk then using Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" also fails. I'm left with the conclusion that I have a corrupt file somewhere important, that's (i) keeping TM from working and (ii) messing with basic functionality. I am not (yet) savvy enough in OS X to know what logs to look in, or how to decipher them - but 'corrupt file' seems to be the likely case, based on my readings of apple.com forum threads. So I think I need to backup, outside of Time Machine, then install fresh OS X on a new drive (or maybe SpinRite the current drive?). I'm able to put a (non-Time Machine) external USB drive on, so I dragged all 3 Users' folders to that... am I done backing up? Am I going to have a massive Permissions problem, trying to put things back together after a re-install? Thanks for reading.

• bootmgr image is corrupt

  I just replaced my HD with a SSD. I did a brand new install on the SSD and I received the following error after booting BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot. A little configuration for your knowledge. The system used to be a dual boot with XP & windows 7. After replacing the original startup HD with my SSD I changed a setting in the bios to AHCI (I have tested changing it back but this did not help). When I look at the stats on the drive in the bios, it claims that the SSD is in a raid configuration despite the settings not being configured that way. Related System Information: Intel 320 Series 80 GB Sata II SSD JetWay JPA78VM3-H-LF AM2+/AM2 AMD 780V HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 X2 7 GB ram I have performed 2 fresh installs to no avail. Also, followed this guide and performed option 1 and 2. I have done bootsec/fixmbr and /fixboot. So.. any suggestions?

• Windows 7 restarts while being idle

  My Windows 7 almost always restarts when I keep it idle for ~20-30mins. It happened randomly before, but lately, if I leave the computer I can be sure it's gonna restart after those 30mins. It never happens when I play games or work tho, just when it's idle. It's a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit. I had also problems while installing it, it always crashed while finalizing the install and I had to reinstall again. Eventually it installed on 3rd or 4th try after I deleted all of my partitions and added them again. I thought it might have been a hardware problem, but temperatures seem to be okay and I have no idea how to track what might have been causing it. Any ideas? I'm running Windows 7 64bit on: Gigabyte EX58-UD4P Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 6GB of DDR3 1066Mhz RAM WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0 1TB SATA II I have a very bad feeling it might be something with HDD and its compatibility with Windows 7 as I haven't had those problems for 1 year while I had Vista. Edit: I checked Event Viewer critical errors from this night. PC restarted first time at 11:12pm, then at 3:06am and since then every ~20min until I came back to it. Error message is: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Source: Kernel-Power

• How to get rid of "Maxback Engine" for good?

  I used to have a Maxtor Shared Storage II network drive; it broke down long ago already. (Later I tried to recover some data from it, and partially succeeded, but haven't yet fully documented it on that question.) Anyway, I just noticed there are still some lingering bits remaining of the (thourougly crappy) software that came with the Maxtor device: a background process called "MaxBack Engine". I googled around a bit and found something related but not very useful: http://www.straitmac.com/jforum/posts/list/600.page http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=725692 Under /Applications I found "Maxtor EasyManage.app" which I used to use for controlling the drive, and showed it some "rm -rf". Before deleting, I noted that the bundle did contain "MaxBack Engine.app" under Content/Resources. But still, after reboot, the "MaxBack Engine" process is back. I did notice though that it only appears when logging in with my usual user account; with another account it wasn't launched. So, dear Mac gurus, what could I do about this pest? I guess I could fall back to some Unix hackery and write a cronjob that kills any process with that name, but obviously it'd be nicer to be able to clean up from my computer everything left behind by Maxtor's piece of software.

• Firebug error causing code to fail in Sitecore when using IE8 to view the Content Editor

  Hi, I have a Sitecore 6 CMS with a custom data provider to create child items on the fly based on items added to a field in the parent item. This was working okay (about a week ago was the last time I was working on this project), but now I am getting errors in the web client which are originating in the FirebugLite html and JS files. Basically, I click on a content item, the FirebugLite js fails, and then my code in my custom data provider fails to run. I would have thought any FirebugLite scripts would be disabled or ignored when running under IE8 (isn't FirebugLite a Firefox addin?) When I remove the FirebugLite folder from ..\sitecore\shell\Controls\Lib\ my code runs fine and I don't get the clientside errors. I'm not really sure what my question is. I guess it is should FirebugLite affect IE8? What am I missing out on if I remove FirebugLite from the Sitecore directory tree? I'm running WindowsXP SP3, VS2008. • New build won't boot: some fans turning, no beep or video

  When my new system is powered up, the case fan and power supply fans turn fine. The CPU fan twitches, but never gets going. Although I've heard that with AMDs and Gigabyte motherboards that is not necessary a problem. Hard drive is spinning. However, there is absolutely no indication that anything else is happening. The motherboard, as far as I can tell, does not have an internal speaker, but I harvested one from another machine and plugged it in and still no beeps at all. The monitor screen stays black, on both the integrated VGA and DVI. This is a brand new build, and has never successfully booted. I'm using the on board video. What I've tried so far: I've switched power supplies, with no difference. I've tried different monitors (of which all are working on other machines) with no difference. I have tried putting it one memory module at a time, with no difference. I have tried the absolute minimum I can think of (power supply into motherboard, power button ONLY plugged into front panel, CPU fan plugged in), with no difference. I appreciate any ideas anyone might have. Do I need to RMA the motherboard? This is my first build, so there might be something obvious. I was very careful in assembly with static; I'm confident nothing was zapped during assembly.

• How do I diagnose the cause of a freeze after resuming in Windows XP (SP3)?

  I have just built a new computer from parts. Whenever I resume from any sleep mode (S1, S3 or S4) the computer freezes within about 60 seconds of the welcome screen appearing. I have updated the BIOS and all drivers to current from the motherboard manufacturer's site. I have reset BIOS settings to default, including disabling AMD Cool n Quiet. The windows event logs are not helpful at all. Other than immediately after resuming the system is stable as long as AMD CnQ is disabled. The system is: Mobo : MSI 790GX-G65 CPU : AMD Phenom II 965 BE at 3.6 GHz Memory : Corsair DDR3 1600, at 1333 MHz and 9-9-9-21 HDDs : 1 EIDE, 2 SATA in RAID-0 DVD : 1 Card Reader: 1 multi-card reader Keyboard is attached via PS2 and mouse is USB. Any thoughts or pointers would be most welcome. EDIT: It appears that the computer may not freeze if a program is left running which puts it under significant load. I left a stress test running which keeps all cores under 85% load, and my son put the computer to sleep - while this program is running it I have been able to resume from S3 successfully 4 times, compared against about 20 tests with the computer idle which have all frozen. So this may be related to being in an idle state when it resumes.

• What was SPX from the IPX/SPX stack ever used for?

  Been trying to learn about older networking protocols a bit, and figured that I would start with IPX/SPX. So I built two MS-DOS virtual machines in VirtualBox, and got IPX communications working (after much trial and error). The idea being to get several old DOS games to run, link up to a multiplayer match, interact with each game window, and capture the traffic using Wireshark from the host machine. From this, I got Quake, Masters of Orion 2, and MechWarrior 2 to communicate back and forth. Doom, Doom2, Duke3d, Warcraft, and several others either buggered up under the VM or just couldn't see the other VM on the IPX network. What did I discover? None of the working games used SPX. Not even Microsoft's NET DIAG used SPX. They all ran ONLY on top of IPX. I can't even find SPX examples or use-cases of SPX traffic running over IEEE 802.3 Ethernet II framing. I did find references that it was in abundant use on token ring, but that's it. Yet any IPX-aware application that I've hunted down so far usually advertises itself as "IPX/SPX", which seems to be a bit of a misnomer, since it doesn't seem to use SPX. So what was SPX used for? Any DOS applications out there that use it which will run under my VM setup? Edit: I am aware that IPX is to SPX as IP is to TCP (layer 3 to layer 4), so I expected to see an SPX layer underneath the IPX layer in Wireshark when I ran my tests.

• Attaching 3.5" desktop drive to MacBook SATA

  I have a mid-2007 MacBook that, according to the Apple Store, has suffered some liquid damage and requires a new logic board to operate correctly, a ~$750 repair I've been told (would normally be around ~$300 were it not for the "liquid damage"). The unit itself works fine - the only problem I've been having is that the system does not recognize the battery and will not charge it. Curiously, the system can still be powered by the battery and even recognizes when the power cord is detached by diming the backlight, but I digress. Now that this laptop will likely become a desktop, I'm wondering if it might be possible to attach a desktop drive. I recently purchased a 2TB SATA drive and I'm wondering if it's possible to somehow attach it where the current internal drive connects. Obviously the drive itself will not fit inside the device, but as the unit will spend the rest of its days on my desk, that's not really much of an issue. My main questions are: Is this possible? If so, how would I connect the drive? Would a SATA extender cable work? Is the SATA port on my MacBook capable of powering a desktop drive? Or should I just get a SATA male-to-female cable and see if I can power the drive through other means (a cheap power supply, for example) The disk I'm referring to is the Hitachi Deskstar HD32000. Though I couldn't find that exact model on Hitachi's support site, these are the power requirements for a similar drive, the 7K2000 (2TB, 7200RPM, SATA II): Power Requirement +5 VDC (+/-5%) +12 VDC (+/-10%) Startup current (A, max.) 1.2 (+5V), 2.0 (+12V) Idle (W) 7.5 From what I've read, 2.5" drives require 5V, meaning that my MacBook obviously is capable of producing it. The specs seem to suggest that this drive seems capable of accepting it instead of the typical 12V - is this an accurate interpretation of the power requirements? Or does it need both 12V and 5V?

• Calling Excel from PHP 5 through COM fails on Windows 7 when Apache started through Task Planner

  I currently write an application, which controls Excel through COM: The app creates a COM-based Excel instance, opens some XLS files and reads their contents. Scenario I On Windows 7, I start Apache and mySQL using xmapp-control with system administrator rights. All works as expected. The PHP-based controller script interacts with Excel as expected. Scenario II A problem appears, if I start Apache and mySQL as 'background jobs'. Here is how: I created two jobs using Windows 7 Task Planner. One runs apache_start.bat, the other runs mysql_start.bat. Both tasks run as SYSTEM with elevated privileges when Windows 7 boots. Apache and mySQL work as expected. Specifically, Apache serves HTTP request from clients and PHP is able to talk to mySQL. When I call the PHP controller, which calls and interacts with Excel using COM, I do receive an error. The error seems to come from Excel [not COM itself] and reads like this: Excel can't read the XLS-file Excel failed to save the file due to an ill-name worksheet Interestingly, during the first run of the PHP-based controller script, it takes a few seconds to render the error message. Each subsequent run immediately renders the error message. Windows system logs didn't show a single problem report entry. Note, that the PHP program and the Apache instance didn't change - except the way Apache was started. At least the PHP controller script is perfectly able to read the file-system, since it provides the pathes to the XLS-file through scandir() of a certain directory. Concurrency issues can't be the cause of the problem. A single instance of the specific PHP controller interacts with Excel. Question Could someone provide details, why this happens?

• OpenVZ vs KVM for Linux VMs

  Hardware: Intel® Core™ i7-920, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, 2 x 1500 GB SATA-II HDD (no SoftRaid because Proxmox developers don't support softraid and they are sure you'll run into problems) Software: Proxmox VE with KVM and OpenVZ support and debian everywhere I want to run multiple Linux VMs on this server. One for a firewall (I want to try pfSense), one for MySQL, one VM for nginx (my stuff) and ~2 VMs with nginx for other people's web sites. I don't think that pfSense will run in an OpenVZ environment but it should run in KVM. The question is if I should setup the other VMs using KVM or OpenVZ. In OpenVZ they should have less overhead for the OS itself but I don't know about the performance. I heard that KVM is more stable but needs more RAM and CPU. I found this diagram showing a OpenVZ setup on the same hardware I'm using. This guy uses an own VM for each and every website which is running on his server. I can't think of any advantage why he's using so many VMs.

• Virtualization in Ubuntu 9.10

  I have an existing Centos 5 installation. I would like to upgrade to Ubuntu. Thing is, I don't want to be down for as long as it will take to get my entire environment moved over - software installed, connectivity configured, etc. I'd like to take it one step at a time. But I don't really want to keep rebooting back and forth from the new OS to the old OS. That's what I did last time I upgraded to a new OS, and it got old real fast. So, since my new MB is virtualization-ready (AMD Phenom II 945 quad-core), I figured I could create a virtual machine, under the new OS installation, that ran the old OS installation. The problem is that the documentation I've been able to find has been pretty sparse. I've found a lot of possibilities, and little info on which would be capable of doing what I want. I have a new Ubuntu 9.10 installation, and a second disk containing the Centos 5 installation. And I don't know where to go next. Any help would be appreciated.

• Server 2008 Print Redirection is failing but only on 16Bit apps

  the main programmer for SoEasyAccounting and we are installing to Server 2008 Standard service pack 1. We install to 2003 with no problems. Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". Eventvwr has no related issues to the print fail Any help greatly appreciated. So far 2 days spent trying to resolve and here goes my weekend :( unless someone has an idea :) Things I have Tried i. • NSCollectionView: Can the same object not be in the array more than once or is this a bug?

  I may be doing this all wrong, but I thought I was on the right track until I hit this little snag. Basically I was putting together a toy using NSCollectionView and trying to understand how to hook that all up using IB. I have a button which will add a couple of strings to the NSArrayController: The first time I press this button, my strings appear in the collection view as expected: The second time I press the button, the views scroll down and room is made - but the items don't appear to get added. I just see blank space: The button is implemented as follows (controller is a pointer to the NSArrayController I added in IB): - (IBAction)addStuff:(id)control { [controller addObjects:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"String 1",@"String 2",@"String 3",nil]]; } I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Rather than try to explain all the connections/binds/etc, if you need more info, I'd be grateful if you could just take a quick look at the toy project itself. UPDATE: After more experimentation as suggested by James Williams, it seems the problem stems from having multiple objects with the same memory address in the array. This confuses either NSArrayController or NSCollectionView (not sure which). Changing my addStuff: to this resulted in the behavior I originally expected: [controller addObjects:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:[NSMutableString stringWithString:@"String 1"],[NSMutableString stringWithString:@"String 2"],[NSMutableString stringWithString:@"String 3"],nil]]; So the question now, I guess, is if this is a bug I should report to Apple or if this is intended/documented behavior and I just missed it?

• Why Wireshark does not recognize this HTTP response?

  I have a trivial CGI script that outputs simple text content. It's written in Perl and using CGI module and it specifies only the most basic headers: print $q->header( -type => 'text/plain', -Content_length => $length, ); print $stuff; There's no apparent issue with functionality, but I'm confused about the fact that Wireshark does not recognize the HTTP response as HTTP--it's marked as TCP. • Windows 7 hangs after going into sleep a second time

  I've searched everywhere around Google and can't figure out why this is happening so I decide to ask here to see if anyone has a problem like this. Like it says in the title, whenever I sleep ONCE I'm able to wake the system, but going back to sleep again AFTER waking up for the first time results in it hanging on no input and no output, with the fan spinning as fast as possible and alot of heat being spewed out by the fan as well. I've tried various things like setting all USB Hub Root's to not get switched off for power saving, disabling USB selective suspend, disabling PCI-e link state power management, and even unplugging ALL USB devices and it wont wake up after the second attempt. And I've even waited up to a full hour of the CPU fan spinning loudly and it's still stuck trying to wake up. The only USB devices I use are a Microsoft USB Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 (IntelliType Pro) and a generic HID compliant mouse from Creative model number OMC90S "CREATIVE MOUSE OPTICAL LITE". My other devices like external drives and controllers are unplugged when I'm not using them as having too many USB devices plugged in at a time causes a deadlock on almost all of the ports I have. Here's my system specifications (Most of these are from CPU-Z): Brand: Gateway DX4300-19 Mainboard: Gateway RS780 Chipset: AMD 780G Rev 00 Southbridge: AMD SB700 Rev 00 LPCIO: ITE IT8718 BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. ver P01-A4 09/15/2009 CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 at 2.60 GHz RAM: 8.0 GB DDR2 Dual Channel Ganged Mode at 400 MHz GPU: ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics Intergrated - RS780 OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (Acer Group) HDD: WDC WD10EADS-22M2B0 1.0 TB (Western Digital Green Caviar) My BIOS has absolutely no control over how I setup the sleep mode to be either S1 or S3. So I can't check these settings or even change them. Hybrid sleep is also disabled, I can successfully go into hibernation and wake from hibernation but this is painfully slow due to a harddrive problem I'm having with this "Green Drive". (Hibernation takes over ~3 minutes to complete) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Most cost effective way to target multiple mobile platforms

  Hi I have been given the tasks of speccing a mobile application, which will need to run on approx. 1000 devices. These devices already exist, and consist of iPhones, BlackBerrys, Androids, Windows Mobile and Netbooks. The application will have simple reporting capability, and a collection of forms. Anyway, the obvious solution would be to develop some browser based solution, although given the occasionally connected nature of the devices, there's a potential for data to get lost / not saved. So instead of creating a complex application for each platform, I was thinking we could build what is effectively a form generator, with basic offline storage capability (text files), designed to run on each device, and have the device generate a form, based on for example an XML file that it could request from a server somewhere, resulting in minimal specialist development costs, and the ability to run most of the logic from the server end, with the devices being dumb clients that render forms and upload the data when there is an available connection. Anyway, my question summarised is, how have you made the decision on supporting multiple devices for your application. Is this always an unavoidable problem, and you just have to make the call to support 1 or 2, or pay for developers to write code for each platform, or alternatively supply pre-installed devices to the company? • Deleting "undeletable" files in Vista

  I recently upgraded my workstation from XP SP3 to Vista Business, and during the upgrade Windows moved my old C:\Windows directory to C:\Windows.old. I got all of the stuff I needed out of that folder, but there are six "undeletable" files there so I cannot remove it. They are: Windows.old\Program1\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\CMap\Identity-H Windows.old\Program1\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\CMap\Identity-V Windows.old\Program1\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll Windows.old\Program1\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelperShim.dll Windows.old\Program1\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF.dll Windows.old\Program1\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\pdfshell.dll Whenever I try to delete the files either through explorer or a command line, I get a permission denied error. I have tried to grant myself full permission on the files, but again, permission denied. I don't even have acrobat installed on my Vista machine, and I uninstalled Adobe updater. However, I still can't manage to get rid of these files. How do I nuke them for good? Edit: I was able to take ownership of the files, but I still can't delete them. Renaming them did not work, as I was denied permission to do that as well. I'll try booting up in safe mode and getting rid of them there. Edit II: Booting up into safe mode did not allow me to delete the files. Bummer.

  New Dell PowerEdge R910, 4x8 Intel X7560, 192GB RAM, hardware NUMA, local RAID, Broadcom NetExtreme II multiport NIC, unteamed, TCP Offload disabled, RSS disabled, NetDMA disabled, Hyperthreading disabled. SQL Server 2005 SE x64 SP3 on Windows Server 2008 R2 EE x64. No other apps on server. Max Mem = 180GB, Max DOP = 4. Existing Windows Server 2003 R2 EE x64 app server connecting to Dell via firewall using SQL Authenticated logins. Symptoms: Intermittent errors at the app server: A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) Findings: Running queries from SSMS located on another machine within the same domain as the SQL Server run without error. SQLIO showed good performance. Windows and SQL logs show no related messages. Microsoft reveiwed PssDiag trace and stated that "We are not seeing timeouts from SQL Side. The queries bring run against the database are timing out within 9secs. This is a database connectivity error." "we can also see from the AttnSeq column that we are also not seeing any Attentions from the SQL Side.". Dell has confirmed that we are using the latest Broadcom drivers.

• Interesting phenomenom with Windows Server 2008 R2 user access controls and NTFS ACLs

  One to try, and I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 box (or presumably 2008 R1, Windows Vista or Windows 7): i) Logon as an administrator, and create a new NTFS volume ii) Blow away the standard MS ACLS on the root of the volume (which are laughable), and replace with Administrators:Full Control, System:Full Control, e.g.: echo Y|cacls.exe d:\ /g "Administrators:F" "SYSTEM:F" iii) Now, from a Command Prompt shell window or PowerShell window, switch to that drive (cd /d D:\ or set-location D:\ ). Works fine... no issues. iv) Now, try to browse to the root of the new volume using MS Explorer... Access denied. Now, I've kind of convinced myself that it is UAC getting in the way, as you can add "Authenticated Users:List" access to D:\ and Explorer then works. I can only assume that MS Explorer isn't able to use the "admin" token for the Administrator. Browsing to explorer.exe and doing a "Run as administrator" has no effect. Any thoughts? • I can't get my PC to start up by a normal way.

  I couldn't write a more accurate title. I am just unable to start the computer by pressing the Power On button. I checked the Power Supply and it seems to give good voltage values in every pin. And this is not a BIOS malfunction because of bad overclocking or anything that may come to your mind. And I will tell you why. It happens that EPS (or any ATX-based) power supply has the ability to be powered-on by the Motherboard by jumping the 13th pin of the 24-pin-ATX-connector to COM/GND. I did it, after pushing the power on button (without any visual response) and, pwhaa! The machine turned on. I was able to read (and even write, if I wanted) BIOS values and then start any OS installed. Machine starts, so it's not any kind of misconfiguration. It seems some hardware related. I am able to power the machine on only if I already pushed the power on button. Though pushing it without jumping the 13th pin to ground for a second does not power the machine. Of course, jumping the pin without pushing the power on button does not tell the motherboard anything, so the computer would not start up either. It's as if the logic that connects the power button with the 13th pin derivation to GND was unable to be activated. What can be the issue? How can I solve it? My configuration is as follows: CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 X4 Black Edition MB: ASUS Formula II AM2 RAM: 2x2GB Corsair Dominator 5-5-5-15 2T @ 1066MHz DDR2 Tested also with only 1 module GPU: 2x XFX nVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT XxX Alpha Dog Edition @ Core: 540Mhz [SLi] Power Supply: Xilence 700W (ATX 12V 2.3 / EPS 12V 2.92 compatible) PS: I know the machine is like 2 years old. I hardly use it now, but my parents do.

  Hello folks. I've been getting lots of answers from stackoverflow now that I'm in Django just be searching. Now I hope my question will also create some value for everybody. In choosing Django, I was hoping there was some similar mechanism to the way you can do partials in ROR. This was going to help me in two ways. One was in generating repeating indexed forms or form elements, and also in rendering only a piece of the page on the round trip. I've done a little bit of that by using taconite with a simple URL click but now I'm trying to get more advanced. This will focus on the form issue which boils down to how to iterate over a secondary object. If I have a list of photo instances, each of which has a couple of parameters, let's say a size and a quantity. I want to generate form elements for each photo instance separately. But then I have two lists I want to iterate on at the same time. Context: photos : Photo.objects.all() and forms = {} for photo in photos: forms[photo.id] = PhotoForm() In other words we've got a list of photo objects and a dict of forms based on the photo.id. Here's an abstraction of the template: {% for photo in photos %} {% include "photoview.html" %} {% comment %} So here I want to use the photo.id as an index to get the correct form. So that each photo has its own form. I would want to have a different action and each form field would be unique. Is that possible? How can I iterate on that? • cancelPreviousPerformRequestWithTarget is not canceling my previously delayed thread started with pe

  Hello, I've launched a delayed thread using performSelector but the user still has the ability to hit the back button on the current view causing dealloc to be called. When this happens my thread still seems to be called which causes my app to crash because the properties that thread is trying to write to have been released. To solve this I am trying to call cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget to cancel the previous request but it doesn't seem to be working. Below are some code snippets. - (void) viewDidLoad { [self performSelector:@selector(myStopUpdatingLocation) withObject:nil afterDelay:6]; } (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated { [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(myStopUpdatingLocation) object:nil]; } Am I doing something incorrect here? The method myStopUpdatingLocation is defined in the same class that I'm calling the perform requests. A little more background. The function that I'm trying to implement is to find a users location, search google for some locations around that location and display several annotations on the map. On viewDidLoad I start updating the location with CLLocationManager. I've build in a timeout after 6 seconds if I don't get my desired accuracy within the timeout and I'm using a performSelector to do this. What can happen is the user clicks the back button in the view and this thread will still execute even though all my properties have been released causing a crash. Thanks in advance! James

• Framework or design pattern for mailing all users of a webapp

  My app takes care of user registration (with the option to receive email announcements), and can easily handle the actual template-based rendering of email for a given user. JavaMail provides the mail transport layer. But how should I design the application layer between the business objects (e.g. User) and the mail transport? The straightforward approach would be a simple, synchronous loop: iterate through the users, queue the emails, and be done with it. "Queue" might mean sending them straight to the MTA (mail server), or to an in-memory queue to be consumed by another thread. However, I also plan to implement features like throttling the rate of emails, processing bounced emails (NDRs), and maintaining status across application restarts. My intuition is that a good design would decouple this from both the business layer and the mail transport layer as much as possible. I wondered if others had solved this problem before, but after much searching I haven't found any Java libraries which seem to fit this problem. Standalone mail apps such as James or list servers are too large in scope; packages like Spring's MailSender or Commons Email are too small in scope (being basically drop-in replacements for JavaMail). For other languages I haven't found anything appropriate either. I'm curious about how other developers have gone about adding bulk mailing to their applications.
