• How do I usb tether my Cyanogen modded G1's internet connection to my Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Xubuntu?

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83 I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

• Mac OS X Lion and KeepassX

  I installed KeepassX on my new Mac which I am still learning the ropes on. I downloaded the program to allow autofill on Chrome ( KeePassHttp.plgx ). It says it needs to be put into directory of KeepassX, but I can't drag it into the application file and I'm not sure yet how to manipulate Terminal. Is terminal what I need to use or is there another way to put it in directory? At this point it is on the Chrome interface, but says it can't detect or make a connection with KX

In disk utilitys I made a 45gig partion called linux but I dont know how to format it and if it matters at all.... Also, when the partition is done. • Unable to do Port Forwarding in Virtual Box

  I'm using Mac OS X 10.6. I have installed Virtual Box 4.1.0 in it. My Guest OS is Ubuntu Server 11.04. I have added a rule in Port Forwarding in Virtual Box - "guestssh" TCP 127.0.1.1 8080 127.0.0.1 1337 Inside Guest OS I'm running nodejs server. Code is nothing but simple helloworld code found on their site http://nodejs.org/. In short I'm running server on 127.0.0.1 on 1337 Port. Now according to rule I have given, from Host Machine all the requests for 127.0.1.1:8080 should be forwarded to 127.0.0.1:1337 of Guest OS. From Host I'm doing curl http://127.0.1.1:8080 and I'm getting curl: (7) couldn't connect to host Is there something am I doing wrong? Note- Don't give me suggestion to do ssh n all. As my ISP does not provide Internal LAN so its not possible in my case. All I can do it Port Forwarding.

  I have been starting up my iMac (Mavericks) with a flash drive that boots up Mountain Lion so that I can use an app that is incompatible with Mavericks. Question: I have a single external backup drive always connected to my Mac. I am thinking of partitioning that drive and giving each partition a unique name, e.g., Backup 1 and Backup 2. I intend then to boot up in Mavericks and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 1, and then boot up in Mountain Lion and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 2. Will this work, i.e., will the appropriate partition automatically back up the system in which it is booted?

  Say I carry a Wi-Fi enabled phone or laptop through an area where there are WAPs. Assuming that I don't actively try to connect to them or otherwise interact with them, is it possible for the owner of that WAP to know that I was there? I'm asking this in the context of my earlier question: Looking for MACs on the network I was talking with a friend about my newfound ability to detect phones (and other devices with MAC addresses) on the network, and he pointed out that it might be useful to detect unknown phones on the network; I could use that data to track down anyone who was in my house and brought a Wi-Fi phone with them. So, if I set up a logging fake WAP with no security or encryption, can I glean any useful information about the devices that come into the house? Assuming that the thief doesn't actively try to connect...

• OS X SnowLeopard menubar icons appear/disappear in 8 second cycle

  I just bought a new Mac Mini, and used Migration Assistant to move a user from an iMac to it. All went well, except a very strange behavior... the default OS X menubar icons like time, spotlight, etc (but NOT user installed app icons like dropbox or xmarks) appear and disappear in a very regular 8 second cycle. They appear for about 2 seconds, and then disappear for about 6. This is a screenshot with the icons, and this is a screenshot without them. This is very annoying and I have not found anything online with similar symptoms. Any ideas?

• Thunderbird 3.0.2 stops automatically checking for email

  Since upgrading to Thunderbird 3.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.6, Thunderbird will intermittently stop checking for messages automatically. Frequently I am presented with the error "This folder is being processed" when manually checking for mail. Restarting Thunderbird fixes the problem, but I have noticed hours can go by where auto checking isn't working, and restarting shows there were dozens of messages waiting to be delivered in that down time. Occasionally I will see "indexing 1 of 2 messages - 0% complete" in the status bar, it will sit there for a long time. Actions I've taken to fix: Deleted all .msf files in all accounts Removed News & Blogs account Staggered the "automatically check for mail" interval for each account Worth noting: after waking up the macbook, TB usually needs to be restarted to resume auto checking for mail. Has anyone experienced such trouble?

  I would like to be able to set up a folder on my Mac, where I could dump files and have them be automatically sent to the default printer. This way I would be able to print files at home when I'm not physically at home, using something like Dropbox.   In Mac OS X, when the text for a desktop icon is particularly long, it's displayed with an ellipsis: How do I configure whatever I'm supposed to configure (Finder?) to display that and all text in full? (No ellipses, please!) Edit: I do know that you can change the icon/text/grid size to allow for more text, but I don't necessarily want to change those settings. I want to change how Apple displays the text. That is, I want it to display either as one long string (which will run into other strings if two long file/folder names are next to each other, they will appear to overlap) or word-wrapped according to the size of the grid.

  I'm trying to SSH from one Mac running OS X 10.6 to another. Seems to work fine via a password, but I can't get it to use a RSA key instead. Where is the ssh configuration file on OS X and what is the command to reload SSH? Update What I'm asking is how to configured advanced options. For example, on Ubuntu there is a ssh config file at /etc/ssh/sshd_config and if you do something like change the port or disable password authentication for a particular user (PasswordAuthentication no) you need to run /etc/init.d/ssh reload to reload the config. I didn't see that file on OS X, so was just wondering where it was. I am aware of the ~/.ssh ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and `~/.ssh/config

  I have a bootable .img file that I want to convert to a bootable .iso file. I downloaded poweriso for Mac and used this command: poweriso convert MyOS.img -o MyOS.iso -ot iso which returned this output: PowerISO Copyright(C) 2004-2008 PowerISO Computing, Inc Type poweriso -? for help MyOS.img: The file format is invalid or unsupported. I thought PowerISO could convert .img to .iso. Was I incorrect, or did I use the wrong commands or something like that?

• I can't open a Word file because it's too large

  I was creating a file with MS Word 2007 where I included a number of images. I didn't compress them as I was putting them into the file. I managed to save the file, but have not been able to reopen it ever since, as it says that I have exceeded the 32 MB limit. I am working on an old Macbook (OS X 10.4.11). I have tried to open the file in both OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but it just causes those programs to crash. Is there any way of reducing the file size without opening the document?

  I just cant seem to figure out the logic in how to configure my Mac Server. So I have set up an DNS, which will take the domain and all subdomains and point towards an IP. File: db.mydomain.com (in /var/named/) mydomain.com. 10800 IN SOA mydomain.com. admin.mydomain.com. ( 2012110903 ; serial 3600 ; refresh (1 hour) 900 ; retry (15 minutes) 1209600 ; expire (2 weeks) 86400 ; minimum (1 day) ) 10800 IN NS mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 www.mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 So I want all of these requests to be requested to the 10.0.1.2 server, as I run 2 servers in my cluster. This one has always handled the requests, and now I want to add a server in between. So the server in between will get all the signals from my router which NAT the trafic coming from outside. So after setting this up and trying to point my port 80 towards my new server which will be the middle point, it doesn't work. Is it even possible to do it this way? First server: Mac Second server: Linux So what I try to achieve once more: 1. User goes to mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com 2. User request gets handled by my first server 3. First server refers to a local server, which is only available locally (it is configured to allow requests on port 80 and handle them) 4. Second server receives signal 5. Second server returns a request (either directly send to user or send through first server, whichever is most secure and configurable) I also want to be able to set up domains that lead to other servers in the future, and some that are only available within the VPN. (If that changes anything) I hope some kind soul could help me with this, it is really cumbersome for my mind to get the logic here. Do I have to configure my other server in any way? /Marcus

• Hack/software to easily move screen mapping of a wacom tablet?

  I would like to move/manipulate the mapping of my Wacom tablet to my screen as easily as with Inklet: http://tenonedesign.com/inklet.php Is anyone aware of any software or hack to acheive this on Mac OS X? If not I'm thinking about trying to write a script that centers the mapping on the current cursor position, and then bidning that to a button on my tablet. Combined with a script for toggling between fullscreen/part of screen-mapping that should be enough. My idea so far is to edit the .prefs file since it's plain XML, and then restart the tablet driver. But any pointers relating to this would be most welcome, since my knowledge of this kind of things is rudimentary.

  I'm following a video tutorial where the author (who uses textmate) can open files by using "mate". for example mate .git/config will open this config file I'm using textwrangler however so I don't have that option. I did try edit .README once when i tried to open the README file of an application, but it opened a blank README file in textwrangler instead of the file with the text in it so any idea how I can open this .git/config file (or any other file) using textwrangler? • Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion from a Fujitsu-Siemens recovery disk.

  I have installed a trail version from VMWare Fusion. I had (sold now) a very old Fujitu-Siemens laptop (from around 2001) which came with two recovery disks (which I still have :P). One recovery disk is a Windows XP installer, the other is a disk with drivers and useless software you will never use and run permanently in the background. If I install Windows XP from the recovery disk (which did not contain any software except what comes with Windows XP, for as far as I know), will it run in VMWare Fusion? Or do I really have to buy/pirate a new Windows XP installation disk? Thanks. Yes, I need XP, not 7.

• Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

  I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further?   I'm trying to secure my home network but don't really need the complexity of a VPN so I'm trying to figure out other options. I'd like to allow my iPhone remote access to my home servers but I can't depend on the IP address because it changes quite often (due to the 3G network, etc). Can I filter incoming connections on my router (pfsense) by MAC address or does NAT change the source as it's passing through the different routers on the internet?
