Mysql slowing down my application

my application is taking ages to load because of my database isnt located on my computer.. Anyone have any idea to how improve my performance? public Form1() { Splash splash = new Splash(); splash.Show(); InitializeComponent(); Load(); public void Load() { db.SelectTeam(); db.SelectMatches(); } On db.SelectTeam and SelectMatches I get everything I need from mysql and put into lists... In this post, I will give an introduction to how to work on NoSQL and document database with MongoDB , NoRM and ASP.Net MVC 2. NoSQL and Document Database The NoSQL movement is getting big attention in this year and people are widely talking about document databases and NoSQL along with web application scalability. According to Wikipedia, "NoSQL is a movement promoting a loosely defined class of non-relational data stores that break with a long history of relational databases. These data stores may not require fixed table schemas, usually avoid join operations and typically scale horizontally. Academics and papers typically refer to these databases as structured storage". Document databases are schema free so that you can focus on the problem domain and don't have to worry about updating the schema when your domain is evolving. This enables truly a domain driven development. One key pain point of relational database is the synchronization of database schema with your domain entities when your domain is evolving.There are lots of NoSQL implementations are available and both CouchDB and MongoDB got my attention. While evaluating both CouchDB and MongoDB, I found that CouchDB can’t perform dynamic queries and later I picked MongoDB over CouchDB. There are many .Net drivers available for MongoDB document database. MongoDB MongoDB is an open source, scalable, high-performance, schema-free, document-oriented database written in the C++ programming language. It has been developed since October 2007 by 10gen. MongoDB stores your data as binary JSON (BSON) format . Using JCA Adapter with OSB 11.1.1.3

In OSB 10g to use the JCA adapters you were required to use JDeveloper to create the necessary WSDLs and XSDs etc using the associated adapter wizard. These files were imported into Oracle Workshop (Eclipse) and used to create the business service as you would any other web service. In 11g unfortunately JDeveloper is still required. The process has changed slightly as described below. As an example I have used the JCA DB adapter as an example. Start JDeveloper 11.1.1.3 Create a new SOA Application Create a new SOA Project and call it DBAdapters. Choose the Empty Composite Template Drag a Database Adapter Component to the External References panel on the composite. Provide a service name. Create a new database connection, or use an existing one Take note of the JNDI Name, e.g. eis/DB/MyConnection This will be used to configure the DB connection in the WebLogic Console. In my example I use a stored procedure, but you can use what ever operation you require. Please refer to the following link for other options: User's Guide for Technology Adapters Select a schema and stored procedure Once the procedure has been selected, accept the defaults and finish. Startup your OEPE version of Eclipse. Create a new Oracle Service Bus Configuration Project (you can use an existing project if you have one) Create a new Oracle Service Bus Project in the configuration project created above. Instead of importing the WSDL and XSD files you import the jca file created in JDeveloper. In Eclipse right click the Oracle Service Bus Project and select Import –> Import Choose File System Browse to the directory where JDeveloper stores its project Select the jca, wsdl, and xsd files based on the service you created in step 5. Also check the ‘Create selected folders only’ radio button. When you import you may have a little red x indicating the files are invalid. This is due to the location of the files. Open the invalid files and fix the path in relation to where you store your files in the OSB project. Once you have the files all valid, Right-Click the jca file and select Oracle Service Bus –> Generate Service. This will create a new Business Service. Database model for keeping track of likes/shares/comments on blog posts over time

My goal is to keep track of the popular posts on different blog sites based on social network activity at any given time. The goal is not to simply get the most popular now, but instead find posts that are popular compared to other posts on the same blog. For example, I follow a tech blog, a sports blog, and a gossip blog. The tech blog gets waaay more readership than the other two blogs, so in raw numbers every post on the tech blog will always out number views on the other two. So lets say the average tech blog post gets 500 facebook likes and the other two get an average of 50 likes per post. Then when there is a sports blog post that has 200 fb likes and a gossip blog post with 300 while the tech blog posts today have 500 likes I want to highlight the sports and gossip blog posts (more likes than average vs tech blog with more # of likes but just average for the blog) The approach I am thinking of taking is to make an entry in a database for each blog post. Every x minutes (say every 15 minutes) I will check how many likes/shares/comments an entry has received on all the social networks (facebook, twitter, google+, linkeIn). So over time there will be a history of likes for each blog post, i.e post 1234 after 15 min: 10 fb likes, 4 tweets, 6 g+ after 30 min: 15 fb likes, 15 tweets, 10 g+ ... ... after 48 hours: 200 fb likes, 25 tweets, 15 g+ By keeping a history like this for each blog post I can know the average number of likes/shares/tweets at any give time interval. So for example the average number of fb likes for all blog posts 48hrs after posting is 50, and a particular post has 200 I can mark that as a popular post and feature/highlight it. A consideration in the design is to be able to easily query the values (likes/shares) for a specific time-frame, i.e. fb likes after 30min or tweets after 24 hrs in-order to compute averages with which to compare against (or should averages be stored in it's own table?) If this approach is flawed or could use improvement please let me know, but it is not my main question. My main question is what should a database scheme for storing this info look like? Assuming that the above approach is taken I am trying to figure out what a database schema for storing the likes over time would look like. I am brand new to databases, in doing some basic reading I see that it is advisable to make a 3NF database. I have come up with the following possible schema. Schema 1 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id ( primary key(pk) ) url title Table: Social Activity activity_id (pk) url (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value timestamp This was my initial instinct (base on my very limited db knowledge). As far as I under stand this schema would be 3NF? I searched for designs of similar database model, and found this question on stackoverflow, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11216080/data-structure-for-storing-height-and-weight-etc-over-time-for-multiple-users . The scenario in that question is similar (recording weight/height of users overtime). Taking the accepted answer for that question and applying it to my model results in something like: Schema 2 (same as above, but break down the social activity into 2 tables) DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: Social Measurement measurement_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp Table: Social stat stat_id (pk) measurement_id (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value The advantage I see in schema 2 is that I will likely want to access all the values for a given time, i.e. when making a measurement at 30min after a post is published I will simultaneous check number of fb likes, fb shares, fb comments, tweets, g+, linkedIn. So with this schema it may be easier get get all stats for a measurement_id corresponding to a certain time, i.e. all social stats for post 1234 at time x. Another thought I had is since it doesn't make sense to compare number of fb likes with number of tweets or g+ shares, maybe it makes sense to separate each social measurement into it's own table? Schema 3 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: fb_likes fb_like_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: fb_shares fb_shares_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: tweets tweets__id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: google_plus google_plus_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value As you can see I am generally lost/unsure of what approach to take. I'm sure this typical type of database problem (storing measurements overtime, i.e temperature statistic) that must have a common solution. Is there a design pattern/model for this, does it have a name? I tried searching for "database periodic data collection" or "database measurements over time" but didn't find anything specific. What would be an appropriate model to solve the needs of this problem?

Adopting DBVCS

Identify early adopters Pick a small project with a small(ish) team. This can be a legacy application or a green-field application. Strive to find a team of early adopters that will be eager to try something new. Get the team on board! Research Research the tool(s) that you want to use. Some tools provide all of the features you would need while some only provide a slice of the pie. DBVCS requires the ability to manage a set of change scripts that update a database from one version to the next. Ideally a tool can track database versions and automatically apply updates. The change script generation process can be manual, but having diff tools available to automatically generate it can really reduce the overhead to adoption. Finally, an automated tool to generate a script file per database object is an added bonus as your version control system can quickly identify what was changed in a commit (add/del/modify), just like with code changes. Don’t settle on just one tool, identify several. Then work with the team to evaluate the tools. Have the team do some tests of the following scenarios with each tool: Baseline an existing database: can the migration tool work with legacy databases? Caution: most migration platforms do not support baselines or have poor support, especially the fad of fluent APIs. Add/drop tables Add/drop procedures/functions/views Alter tables (rename columns, add columns, remove columns) Massage data – migrations sometimes involve changing data types that cannot be implicitly casted and require you to decide how the data is explicitly cast to the new type. This is a requirement for a migrations platform. Think about a case where you might want to combine fields, or move a field from one table to another, you wouldn’t want to lose the data. Run the tool via the command line. If you cannot automate the tool in Continuous Integration what is the point? Create a copy of a database on demand. Backup/restore databases locally. Let the team give feedback and decide together, what tool they would like to try out. My recommendation at this point would be to include TSqlMigrations and RoundHouse as SQL based migration platforms. In general I would recommend staying away from the fluent platforms as they often lack baseline capabilities and add overhead to learn a new API when SQL is already a very well known DSL. Code migrations often get messy with procedures/views/functions as these have to be created with SQL and aren’t cross platform anyways. IMO stick to SQL based migrations. Reconciling Production If your project is a legacy application, you will need to reconcile the current state of production with your development databases. Find changes in production and bring them down to development, even if they are old and need to be removed. Once complete, produce a baseline of either dev or prod as they are now in sync. Commit this to your VCS of choice. Add whatever schema changes tracking mechanism your tool requires to your development database. This often requires adding a table to track the schema version of that database. Your tool should support doing this for you. You can add this table to production when you do your next release. Script out any changes currently in dev. Remove production artifacts that you brought down during reconciliation. Add change scripts for any outstanding changes in dev since the last production release. Commit these to your repository. Say No to Shared Dev DBs Simply put, you wouldn’t dream of sharing a code checkout, why would you share a development database? If you have a shared dev database, back it up, distribute the backups and take the shared version offline (including the dev db server once all projects are using DB VCS). Doing DB VCS with a shared database is bound to cause problems as people won’t be able to easily script out their own changes from those that others are working on. First prod release Copy prod to your beta/testing environment. Add the schema changes table (or mechanism) and do a test run of your changes. If successful you can schedule this to be run on production. Evaluation After your first release, evaluate the pain points of the process. Try to find tools or modifications to existing tools to help fix them. Don’t leave stones unturned, iteratively evolve your tools and practices to make the process as seamless as possible. This is why I suggest open source alternatives. Nothing is set in stone, a good example was adding transactional support to TSqlMigrations. We ran into situations where an update would break a database, so I added a feature to do transactional updates and rollback on errors! Another good example is generating change scripts. We have been manually making these for months now. I found an open source project called Open DB Diff and integrated this with TSqlMigrations. These were things we just accepted at the time when we began adopting our tool set. Once we became comfortable with the base functionality, it was time to start automating more of the process. Simple MediaWiki question

I'm thinking about making a mediawiki website. At first I'd like to try it at localhost. I'm running Kubuntu 11.10, so I did: sudo aptitude install apache2 mysql-server php5 php5-mysql php5-cli And I also fetched the latest mediawiki to: /home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0 Now I'm supposed to open http://localhost/home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0/index.php But firefox says the page is not found. While http://localhost works. If I get it right - I have to open index.php to install mediawiki. So my question is - what do I do wrong? I'm really sorry for this is might be a very simple question. By the way do I have to make a db beforehand? Is it possible to use mongoDB as a db with mediawiki?

Storing large data in HTTP Session (Java Application)

I am asking this question in continuation with http-session-or-database-approach. I am planning to follow this approach. When user add product to cart, create a Cart Model, add items to cart and save to DB. Convert Cart model to cart data and save it to HTTP session. Any update/ edit update underlying cart in DB and update data snap shot in Session. When user click on view cart page, just pick cart data from Session and display to customer. I have following queries regarding HTTP Session How good is it to store large data (Shopping Cart) in Session? How scalable this approach can be ? (With respect to Session) Won't my application going to eat and demand a lot of memory? Is my approach is fine or do i need to consider other points while designing this? Though, we can control what all cart data should be stored in the Session, but still we need to have certain information in cart data being stored in session?

Install of AppFabric RC stops AppFabric Monitoring (some traps for young players)

I uninstalled AppFabric Beta 2 and installed AppFabric RC. The AppFabricEventCollection Service is started (runs under Local Service which is a dbo_owner on the Monitoring Database to prove this wasn’t the issue). The SQLServerAgent Service is started. Nothing is being written to the Monitoring DB Staging Table and thus nothing is being written to the Event tables or seen in the AppFabric Dashboard. Nothing has been written to the following event logs - Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Admin - Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Operational The Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Debug event log is not shown in the event viewer. The WCF configuration appears fine the connection string to the Monitoring DB is correct. Monitoring is set to “Trouble Shooting” and no errors are shown on the “Configure WCF and WF for Application” dialog. So the problem seems to lie with either AppFabric which writes to the event log or the AppFabricEventCollection Service. I thought I was flummoxed... However one of my colleagues said have you checked the etwProviderId? I was using a config which was created under AppFabric Beta 2 which had a different etwProviderId. So I deleted the following section and all other references to AppFabric monitoring from the web.config and then recreated them using IIS the “Configure WCF and WF for Application” dialog and set the level to TroubleShooting. <diagnostics etwProviderId="6b44a7ff-9db4-4723-b8cf-1b584bf1591b"> <endToEndTracing propagateActivity="true" messageFlowTracing="true" /> </diagnostics> I then called a service to create some log entries. Still nothing was written to the Monitoring DB Staging Table... I checked the Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Admin event log. It had the following entry... Configuration error. Please see the details to correct the problem. \rDetailed information:\r Filename: \\?\C:\Users\xxx\Documents\dotnetdev\Frameworks\SOA\xxx.SOA.Framework\xxx.SOA.Framework.MockServices\SimpleServiceParent\web.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Filename: \\?\C:\Users\xxx\Documents\dotnetdev\Frameworks\SOA\xxx.SOA.Framework\IAG.SOA.Framework.MockServices\SimpleServiceParent\web.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions And guess who the user was... Local Service yes yes I should have used a better User in the AppFabric RC setup to run the AppFabricEventCollection Service under! So I changed the user to a more appropriate one and removed Local Service as a DBO and hay presto!

Not able to see databases in symlinked folder

I created a folder on my Dropbox and then symlinked it to both of my computers that I use for development. The folder is working correctly and I can see all the files in it from both computers. The problem arises when I try and access the databases from my MacBook Air. When I open up MAMP Pro and start the web service I can't connect to my development sites, at least from one of my computers. My questions are: Is this even a good idea to symlink the db folder for MAMP? If it is not then is the a smart way to develop locally on two machines? Can I prompt phpMyAdmin to reindex the db folder so it can start accessing the databases? I have tried shutting down both versions of the server software. I have restarted both machines. I am at a loss right now. -Josh

2 Birds, 1 Stone: Enabling M2M and Mobility in Healthcare

Jim Connors has created a video showcase of a comprehensive healthcare solution, connecting a mobile application directly to an embedded patient monitoring system. In the demo, Jim illustrates how you can easily build solutions on top of the Java embedded platform, using Oracle products like Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. Jim is running Apache Tomcat on an embedded device, using Berkeley DB as the data store. BDB is transparently linked to an Oracle Database backend using Database Mobile Server. Information protection is important in healthcare, so it is worth pointing out that these products offer strong data encryption, for storage as well as transit. In his video, Jim does a great job of demystifying M2M. What's compelling about this demo is that uses a solution architecture that enterprise developers are already comfortable and familiar with: a Java apps server with a database backend. The additional pieces used to embed this solution are Oracle Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. It functions transparently, from the perspective of Java apps developers. This means that organizations who understand Java apps (basically everyone) can use this technology to develop embedded M2M products. The potential uses for this technology in healthcare alone are immense; any device that measures and records some aspect of the patient could be linked, securely and directly, to the medical records database. Breathing, circulation, other vitals, sensory perception, blood tests, x-rats or CAT scans. The list goes on and on. In this demo case, it's a testament to the power of the Java embedded platform that they are able to easily interface the device, called a Pulse Oximeter, with the web application. If Jim had stopped there, it would've been a cool demo. But he didn't; he actually saved the most awesome part for the end! At 9:52 Jim drops a bombshell: He's also created an Android app, something a doctor would use to view patient health data from his mobile device. The mobile app is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the system, using the device agent from Oracle's Database Mobile Server. In doing so, Jim has really showcased the full power of this solution: the ability to build M2M solutions that integrate seamlessly with mobile applications. In closing, I want to point out that this is not a hypothetical demo using beta or even v1.0 products. Everything in Jim's demo is available today. What's more, every product shown is mature, and already in production at many customer sites, albeit not in the innovative combination Jim has come up with. Does it make sense to use ORM in Android development?

Does it make sense to use an ORM in Android development or is the framework optimized for a tighter coupling between the UI and the DB layer? Background: I've just started with Android development, and my first instinct (coming from a .net background) was to look for a small object-relational mapper and other tools that help reduce boilerplate clode (e.g. POJOs + OrmLite + Lombok). However, while developing my first toy application I stumbled upon a UI class that explicitly requires a database cursor: AlphabetIndexer. That made me wonder if maybe the Android library is not suited for a strict decoupling of UI and DB layer and that I will miss out on a lot of useful, time-saving features if I try to use POJOs everywhere (instead of direct database access). Clarification: I'm quite aware of the advantages of using ORM in general, I'm specifically interested in how well the Android class library plays along with it.

Strategy to find bottleneck in a network

Our enterprise is having some problem when the number of incoming request goes beyond a certain amount. To make things simpler, we have N websites that uses, amongst other, a local web service. This service is hosted by IIS, and it's a .NET 4.0 (C#) application executed in a farm. It's REST-oriented, built around OpenRasta. As already mentioned, by stress testing it with JMeter, we've found that beyond a certain amount of request the service's performance drop. Anyway, this service is, amongst other, a client itself of other 3 distinct web services and also a client for a DB server, so it's not very clear what really is the culprit of this abrupt decay. In turn, these 3 other web services are installed in our farm too, and client of other DB servers (and services, possibly, that are out of my team control). What strategy do you suggest to try to locate where the bottleneck(s) are? Do you have any high-level suggestions?

If you want to use the 12c client jar files, it's a bit of work because they aren't shipped with WLS and you can't just drop in ojdbc6.jar as in the old days. You need to use a matched set of jar files and they need to come before existing jar files in the CLASSPATH. The MOS article is written from the standpoint that you need to get the jar files directly - download almost 1G and install over 600M footprint to get 15 jar files. Assuming that you have the database installed and you can get access to the installation (or ask the DBA), you need to copy the 15 jar files to each machine with a WLS installation and get them in your CLASSPATH. You can play with setting the PRE_CLASSPATH but the more practical approach may be to just update WL_HOME/common/bin/commEnv.sh directly. There's a change in the transaction completion behavior (read the MOS) so if you think you might run into that, you will want to set -Doracle.jdbc.autoCommitSpecCompliant=false. Also if you are running with Active GridLink, you must set -Doracle.ucp.PreWLS1212Compatible=true (how's that for telling you that this is fixed in WLS 12.1.2). Once you get the configuration out of the way, you can start using the new ojdbc7.jar in place of the ojdbc6.jar to get the new JDBC 4.1 API's. You can also start using Application Continuity. This feature is also known as JDBC Replay because when a connection fails you get a new one with all JDBC operations up to the failure point automatically replayed. As you might expect, there are some limitations but it's an interesting feature. Obviously I'm going to focus on the 12c database features that we can leverage in WLS data source. You will need to read other sources or the product documentation to get all of the new features.

What can I do to give some more love and disk space to my database on Ubuntu?

I'm new to linux. I've deployed a db to ubuntu server on amazon and found out I'm low on disk space. did df (see below) - and found out that I'm 89% capacity on one file system, but less on others. What does this mean? Do I have a few partitions and can now utilize others besides /dev/xvda1? Also /dev/xvdb seems large, is it safe to put the db in it and only use it?
