• How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

• How can I upgrade bash to >= 4.1 on CentOS 5.5?

  I have a CentOS 5.5 VPS server. I want to use RVM. According to the console output when I run the RVM installer, RVM requires bash = 4.1. I just ran yum update. My bash version is now 3.2.25. If I understand how yum works, that means that 3.2.25 is sort of the version of bash that "belongs with" my CentOS version, and it's the latest version I can get using yum. (Right? Or am I wrong about this?) How can I get that on my CentOS 5.5 system? To clarify, I understand that I can just download the source and install, but I'm hesitant to break out of yum's version management system. Is there a way to upgrade bash without disrupting yum?

• Is it possible to upgrade PHP to 5.3 on a Centos Kloxo installation?

  I have a VPS running Centos with Kloxo on and I was wondering how I would upgrade the PHP to 5.3 - It's currently running 5.2.6. • Debian/Ubuntu: Enabling "dist-upgrade" behavior for unattended-upgrades?

  We've got a customized distribution of Ubuntu, a repository with some custom packages and we run unattended-upgrades on a number of systems. What we want to be able to do is supply an update of one of our packages which might have a new dependency which is not yet installed. I understand apt normally prevents that from happening automatically, and using dist-upgrade would permit it. How can I get that behavior so our unattended upgrades work the same way? Ideally we'd only want new packages installed if one of our packages causes it to be needed (either as a direct dependency or a child, etc.) Should I be aware of any potential problems or increased risk of breakage. The systems are generally not easily accessed via the console so anything causing a problem requiring manual intervention would be very bad!

  I want to upgrade my SVN Server from 1.6 to 1.7. Unfortunately I can't find anything on the internet how to do this with yum. I have checked rpmforge-extras but it has only svn 1.6 and not 1.7 I wanted to update with yum because this is the most secure way for me. I'm not an experienced Linux user. Is there a yum repository that contains 1.7 (subversion.x86_64 0:1.7.xxxxx.el5.rfx) I hope somebody can help me out? If there is non, perhaps a short explenation how to update with just step by step.

• How do I justify to my management that we need a bandwidth upgrade?

  I work in an office with a 8mbps line and about a 100 people. Our internet has slowed to crawl over the past few months, as we added headcount. However, using speedtest.net or other sites, still shows bandwidth as 8mbps. Now, how do I justify to management that we indeed need to upgrade our bandwidth ? Please note that I dont have access to our main routers or any network equipment. I can only use my system (windows+linux dual boot) to make a case for a reasonable justification. help!

• What are the pros of switching DNS names with a database server hardware upgrade?

  When we upgrade to new hardware at work we usually increment a number in the DNS name. For example. We have a server called database-2, that is slated to become database-3 in the coming days. I haven't been able to find a good reason why this is good behavior. To me the work of trying to catch all end user machines, as well as all servers dependent on the database server is far riskier than simply moving the database and ip/name with it to the new hardware. A little over a year ago we spent several months of requests coming in, as infrequent users began using software that needed to be updated to point to a new DNS name. I am struggling to find answers as to why this is a good practice. So the question. Why is using DNS names as a "server hardware version identifier" a good idea? What am I overlooking? Thanks much.

  I'm struggling to get the netty example websocket client working. I've compiled successfully with 4.0.0.Alpha8, but when I try to connect to a server (also a netty example) I get: Exception in thread "main" io.netty.handler.codec.http.websocketx.WebSocketHandshakeException: Invalid handshake response upgrade: websocket at io.netty.handler.codec.http.websocketx.WebSocketClientHandshaker13.finishHandshake(WebSocketClientHandshaker13.java:204) which makes no sense to me whatsoever, given that this piece of code reads: String upgrade = response.getHeader(Names.UPGRADE); if (!Values.WEBSOCKET.equalsIgnoreCase(upgrade)) { throw new WebSocketHandshakeException("Invalid handshake response upgrade: " + response.getHeader(Names.UPGRADE)); } And as the message in the exception demonstrates, the Upgrade header does contain websocket as expected. Any idea what's going on?

• RC of Entity Framework 4.1 (which includes EF Code First)

  Last week the data team shipped the Release Candidate of Entity Framework 4.1.  You can learn more about it and download it here. EF 4.1 includes the new “EF Code First” option that I’ve blogged about several times in the past.  EF Code First provides a really elegant and clean way to work with data, and enables you to do so without requiring a designer or XML mapping file.  Below are links to some tutorials I’ve written in the past about it: Code First Development with Entity Framework 4.x EF Code First: Custom Database Schema Mapping Using EF Code First with an Existing Database The above tutorials were written against the CTP4 release of EF Code First (and so some APIs might be a little different) – but the concepts and scenarios outlined in them are the same as with the RC. Go Live License Last week’s EF 4.1 RC ships with a “go live” license that enables you to use it in production environments.  The final release of EF 4.1 will ship within the next 4 weeks and will be 100% API compatible with the RC release. Improvements with the RC The RC includes several improvements and enhancements.  The EF team has a good blog post summarizing the RC changes.  Scott Hanselman also has a nice video interview with the data team that talks more about the release. One of my favorite improvements introduced with last week’s RC is its support for medium trust security.  This enables you to use EF 4.1 (and code-first) within low-cost ASP.NET shared hosting web environments – without requiring a hoster to install anything to use it. EF 4.1 also now supports validation with not only code-first scenarios, but also model-first and database-first workflows.  Upgrading from previous releases The RC does include a few API tweaks and changes from the prior CTP builds.  Read the release notes that come with the release to get a more detailed listing of the changes. John Papa also has an excellent Upgrading to EF 4.1 RC blog post that describes the steps he took when upgrading a large project he wrote with the previous CTP5 release.  The work to upgrade is pretty straight forward and easy – use his write-up as a guide on how to quickly update projects of your own. NuGet Package Rename One of the changes that the data team made between the CTP5 and RC releases was to rename the NuGet package name from “EFCodeFirst” to “EntityFramework”. They decided to make this change since the EF 4.1 release now includes several additions above and beyond just code first. If you already have installed the “EFCodeFirst” NuGet package, you’ll want to uninstall it and then install the new “EntityFramework” NuGet package.  John Papa’s blog post details the exact steps on how to do this (it only takes ~20 seconds to do this). More EF Tutorials Julie Lerman has created some nice whitepapers and tutorials for MSDN that show using the new EF4 and EF 4.1 feature set. Click here to find links to read and watch them. Summary I’m really excited about the EF 4.1 release that will be shipping next month.  It significantly improves the Entity Framework, and makes it even easier and cleaner to work with data inside of .NET.  You can take advantage of it within all ASP.NET projects (including both Web Forms and MVC), within client projects using Windows Forms and WPF, and within other project types like WCF, Console and Services.  You can use NuGet to easily install it within all of them. • Why did Google remove the search box in developer tool from Chrome 22 stable release?

  In previous version of Chrome, there's the search box in developer tool, on the right top when I open it, just as shown below. (Sorry I can't upload image cuz' I don't have enough reputation for now.) http://i.minus.com/iklSx2vi0uzFB.JPG But, after I upgraded to the first release of Chrome 22 yesterday, that search box was gone, as shown below. http://i.minus.com/ibxXt9wnBekR7E.JPG It is such a useful search box that I rely on all the time, to search for something, or to validate an xpath. So does Google just 'hide' it somewhere else? Or do they really remove it? Anyone know why they made such changes?

• What is the release date for Rakudo Star (perl6)?

  If a specific release date is not available (as I suspect it is not), can you provide resources for tracking how close it is to the desired feature set that allows release. I'm not necessarily asking for a percentage gauge, or X of Y features completed list. A list of bugs marked in whichever section of the perl RT instance that's tracking Rakudo bugs would meet my criteria, even more so if the list is dynamic (I.e. it's a list of bugs tagged in some manner, not a static list of ticket numbers). If there are only a few planned features left to be finished/tested before it's considered ready for final testing, listing those would also be sufficient.

• iTunes Connect rejects my binary because I used a pre-release version of the SDK, what should I do?

  NOTE - I'm posting this question to answer myself as a service to the community. Stay tuned for the answer. I downloaded a pre-release version of the iPhone SDK and tried to update one of my existing apps using a binary I built with it. Obviously you are not supposed to do this but I had forgotten about the warning when I installed the pre-release SDK. Anyway - I have two questions: Can I simply set the base SDK to an earlier version in the build settings and get around this problem? If not, then what should I do?

  For some reason, the retain/release behavior in the following code has me completely baffled. selectedImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"icon_72.png"]; [selectedImage release]; This should break but does not. Why? I thought imageNamed autoreleased itself which means the release here is redundant and should break when the autorelease occurs. • Where Are the Release Versions of ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 Templating Files?

  I'm trying to get the production version of ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 Templating working and can't find the JavaScript files. With the beta version I needed to reference MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js, MicrosoftAjaxAdoNet.js, and MicrosoftAjaxDataContext.js. I can get everything to work with the beta CDN versions (e.g. http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/beta/0911/MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js). But for the life of me I can't find 1. The release CDN versions of these files or 2. Where to download the whole Release ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 JavaScript package. The files certainly are not listed on the ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 CDN at http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/CDNAjax4.ashx. Maybe the files have been renamed? Theoretically this should be a rediculously easy question and I'm a little embarrased to even ask it on StackOverflow, but I've had no luck finding an answer on my own.   The official documentation tells me I've to do these 3 things in order to manage the my memory for "nib objects" correctly. @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIUserInterfaceElementClass *anOutlet; "You should then either synthesize the corresponding accessor methods, or implement them according to the declaration, and (in iPhone OS) release the corresponding variable in dealloc." - (void)viewDidUnload { self.anOutlet = nil; [super viewDidUnload]; } That makes sense for a normal view. However, how am I gonna do that for a UITableView with custom UITableViewCells loaded through a .nib-file? There the IBOutlets are in MyCustomCell.h (inherited from UITableViewCell), but that is not the place where I load the nib and apply it to the cell instances, because that happens in MyTableView.m So do I still release the IBOutlets in the dealloc of MyCustomCell.m or do I have to do something in MyTableView.m? Also MyCustomCell.m doesn't have a - (void)viewDidUnload {} where I can set my IBOutlets to nil, while my MyTableView.m does.

• Sort/Group XML data with PHP?

  I'm trying to make a page using data from the discogs.com (XML)-API. i've been parsing it with simpleXML and it's working pretty well but there is some things i'm not sure how to do. (see. The M.O.F Blend in my link) This is done on discogs with having a master release that features the other releases. unfortunately this information isn't present in the API data, so i want to do the same thing by grouping the <release>-nodes with the same <title>-tags, or add a flag to the <releases> that don't have a unique <title>? any good ideas on the best way of doing this? i also like to know if it's possible to count the <release>-nodes (child of releases) that have the same type-attribute? like in this example count the releases with the type "Main"? maybe it's better to do this things with XMLReader or XPath?
