  • With Its MySQL Database-as-a-Service CERN Empowers Scientists

    - by Bertrand Matthelié
    The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers for scientific research. Founded in 1954 and located near Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN was one of Europe’s first joint ventures. Today, it has 20 member states. The organization uses the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and the origin of the universe. • Problem with memory leaks

    - by user191723
    Sorry, having difficulty formattin code to appear correct here??? I am trying to understand the readings I get from running instruments on my app which are telling me I am leaking memory. There are a number, quite a few in fact, that get reported from inside the Foundation, AVFoundation CoreGraphics etc that I assume I have no control over and so should ignore such as: Malloc 32 bytes: 96 bytes, AVFoundation, prepareToRecordQueue or Malloc 128 bytes: 128 bytes, CoreGraphics, open_handle_to_dylib_path Am I correct in assuming these are something the system will resolve? But then there are leaks that are reported that I believe I am responsible for, such as: This call reports against this line leaks 2.31KB [self createAVAudioRecorder:frameAudioFile]; Immediately followed by this: -(NSError*) createAVAudioRecorder: (NSString *)fileName { // flush recorder to start afresh [audioRecorder release]; audioRecorder = nil; // delete existing file to ensure we have clean start [self deleteFile: fileName]; VariableStore *singleton = [VariableStore sharedInstance]; // get full path to target file to create NSString *destinationString = [singleton.docsPath stringByAppendingPathComponent: fileName]; NSURL *destinationURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath: destinationString]; // configure the recording settings NSMutableDictionary *recordSettings = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithCapacity:6]; //****** LEAKING 384 BYTES [recordSettings setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kAudioFormatLinearPCM] forKey: AVFormatIDKey]; //***** LEAKING 32 BYTES float sampleRate = 44100.0; [recordSettings setObject:[NSNumber numberWithFloat: sampleRate] forKey: AVSampleRateKey]; //***** LEAKING 48 BYTES [recordSettings setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:2] forKey:AVNumberOfChannelsKey]; int bitDepth = 16; [recordSettings setObject: [NSNumber numberWithInt:bitDepth] forKey:AVLinearPCMBitDepthKey]; //***** LEAKING 48 BYTES [recordSettings setObject:[NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] forKey:AVLinearPCMIsBigEndianKey]; [recordSettings setObject:[NSNumber numberWithBool: NO]forKey:AVLinearPCMIsFloatKey]; NSError *recorderSetupError = nil; // create the new recorder with target file audioRecorder = [[AVAudioRecorder alloc] initWithURL: destinationURL settings: recordSettings error: &recorderSetupError]; //***** LEAKING 1.31KB [recordSettings release]; recordSettings = nil; // check for erros if (recorderSetupError) { UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle: @"Can't record" message: [recorderSetupError localizedDescription] delegate: nil cancelButtonTitle: @"OK" otherButtonTitles: nil]; [alert show]; [alert release]; alert = nil; return recorderSetupError; } [audioRecorder prepareToRecord]; //***** LEAKING 512 BYTES audioRecorder.delegate = self; return recorderSetupError; } I do not understand why there is a leak as I release audioRecorder at the start and set to nil and I release recordSettings and set to nil? Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks

  • Running out of memory with UIImage creation on an offscreen Bitmap Context by NSOperation

    - by sigsegv
    I have an app with multiple UIView subclasses that acts as pages for a UIScrollView. UIViews are moved back and forth to provide a seamless experience to the user. Since the content of the views is rather slow to draw, it's rendered on a single shared CGBitmapContext guarded by locks by NSOperation subclasses - executed one at once in an NSOperationQueue - wrapped up in an UIImage and then used by the main thread to update the content of the views. -(void)main { NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc]init]; if([self isCancelled]) { return; } if(nil == data) { return; } // Buffer is the shared instance of a CG Bitmap Context wrapper class // data is a dictionary CGImageRef img = [buffer imageCreateWithData:data]; UIImage * image = [[UIImage alloc]initWithCGImage:img]; CGImageRelease(img); if([self isCancelled]) { [image release]; return; } NSDictionary * result = [[NSDictionary alloc]initWithObjectsAndKeys:image,@"image",id,@"id",nil]; // target is the instance of the UIView subclass that will use // the image [target performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(updateContentWithData:) withObject:result waitUntilDone:NO]; [result release]; [image release]; [pool release]; } The updateContentWithData: of the UIView subclass performed on the main thread is just as simple -(void)updateContentWithData:(NSDictionary *)someData { NSDictionary * data = [someData retain]; if([[data valueForKey:@"id"]isEqualToString:[self pendingRequestId]]) { UIImage * image = [data valueForKey:@"image"]; [self setCurrentImage:image]; [self setNeedsDisplay]; } // If the image has not been retained, it should be released together // with the dictionary retaining it [data release]; } The drawLayer:inContext: method of the subclass will just get the CGImage from the UIImage and use it to update the backing layer or part of it. No retain or release is involved in the process. The problem is that after a while I run out of memory. The number of the UIViews is static. CGImageRef and UIImage are created, retained and released correctly (or so it seems to me). Instruments does not show any leaks, just the free memory available dip constantly, rise a few times, and then dip even lower until the application is terminated. The app cycles through about 2-300 of the aforementioned pages before that, but I would expect to have the memory usage reach a more or less stable level of used memory after a bunch of pages have been already skimmed at fast speed or, since the images are up to 3MB in size, deplete way earlier. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

  • iPhone - database reading method and memory leaks

    - by Do8821
    Hi, in my application, a RSS reader, I get memory leaks that I can't fix because I can't understand from where they come from. Here is the code pointed out by Instruments. -(void) readArticlesFromDatabase { [self setDatabaseInfo]; sqlite3 *database; articles = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; if(sqlite3_open([databasePath UTF8String], &database) == SQLITE_OK) { const char *sqlStatement = "select * from articles"; if(sqlite3_prepare_v2(database, sqlStatement, -1, &compiledStatement, NULL) == SQLITE_OK) { while(sqlite3_step(compiledStatement) == SQLITE_ROW) { NSString *aName = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 1)]; NSString *aDate = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 2)]; NSString *aUrl = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 3)]; NSString *aCategory = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 4)]; NSString *aAuthor = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 5)]; NSString *aSummary = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 6)]; NSMutableString *aContent = [NSMutableString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 7)]; NSString *aNbrComments = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 8)]; NSString *aCommentsLink = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 9)]; NSString *aPermalink = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 11)]; [aContent replaceCharactersInRange: [aContent rangeOfString: @"http://www.mywebsite.com/img/action-on.gif"] withString: @"hellocoton-action-on.gif"]; [aContent replaceCharactersInRange: [aContent rangeOfString: @"hhttp://www.mywebsite.com/img/action-on-h.gif"] withString: @"hellocoton-action-on-h.gif"]; [aContent replaceCharactersInRange: [aContent rangeOfString: @"hthttp://www.mywebsite.com/img/hellocoton.gif"] withString: @"hellocoton-hellocoton.gif"]; NSString *imageURLBrut = [self parseArticleForImages:aContent]; NSString *imageURLCache = [imageURLBrut stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@":" withString:@"_"]; imageURLCache = [imageURLCache stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"/" withString:@"_"]; imageURLCache = [imageURLCache stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@" " withString:@"_"]; NSString *uniquePath = [tmp stringByAppendingPathComponent: imageURLCache]; if([[NSFileManager defaultManager] fileExistsAtPath: uniquePath]) { imageURLCache = [@"../tmp/" stringByAppendingString: imageURLCache]; [aContent replaceCharactersInRange: [aContent rangeOfString: imageURLBrut ] withString: imageURLCache]; } Article *article = [[Article alloc] initWithName:aName date:aDate url:aUrl category:aCategory author:aAuthor summary:aSummary content:aContent commentsNbr:aNbrComments commentsLink:aCommentsLink commentsRSS:@"" enclosure:aPermalink enclosure2:@"" enclosure3:@""]; [articles addObject:article]; article = nil; [article release]; } } sqlite3_finalize(compiledStatement); } sqlite3_close(database); } ` I have a lot of "Article" leaked and NSString matching with these using : [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, X)]; I tried a lot of different code I always have these leaks. Anyone has got an idea to help me?

  • Gradual memory leak in loop over contents of QTMovie

    - by Benji XVI
    I have a simple foundation tool that exports every frame of a movie as a .tiff file. Here is the relevant code: NSString* movieLoc = [NSString stringWithCString:argv[1]]; QTMovie *sourceMovie = [QTMovie movieWithFile:movieLoc error:nil]; int i=0; while (QTTimeCompare([sourceMovie currentTime], [sourceMovie duration]) != NSOrderedSame) { // save image of movie to disk NSAutoreleasePool *arp = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSString *filePath = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"/somelocation_%d.tiff", i++]; NSData *currentImageData = [[sourceMovie currentFrameImage] TIFFRepresentation]; [currentImageData writeToFile:filePath atomically:NO]; NSLog(@"%@", filePath); [sourceMovie stepForward]; [arp release]; } [pool drain]; return 0; As you can see, in order to prevent very large memory buildups with the various transparently-autoreleased variables in the loop, we create, and flush, an autoreleasepool with every run through the loop. However, over the course of stepping through a movie, the amount of memory used by the program still gradually increases. Instruments is not detecting any memory leaks per se, but the object trace shows certain General Data blocks to be increasing in size. [Edited out reference to slowdown as it doesn't seem to be as much of a problem as I thought.] Edit: let's knock out some parts of the code inside the loop & see what we find out... Test 1 while (banana) { NSAutoreleasePool *arp = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSString *filePath = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"/somelocation_%d.tiff", i++]; NSLog(@"%@", filePath); [sourceMovie stepForward]; [arp release]; } Here we simply loop over the whole movie, creating the filename and logging it. Memory characteristics: remains at 15MB usage for the duration. Test 2 while (banana) { NSAutoreleasePool *arp = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSImage *image = [sourceMovie currentFrameImage]; [sourceMovie stepForward]; [arp release]; } Here we add back in the creation of the NSImage from the current frame. Memory characteristics: gradually increasing memory usage. RSIZE is at 60MB by frame 200; 75MB by f300. Test 3 while (banana) { NSAutoreleasePool *arp = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSImage *image = [sourceMovie currentFrameImage]; NSData *imageData = [image TIFFRepresentation]; [sourceMovie stepForward]; [arp release]; } We've added back in the creation of an NSData object from the NSImage. Memory characteristics: Memory usage is again increasing: 62MB at f200; 75MB at f300. In other words, largely identical. It looks like a memory leak in the underlying system QTMovie uses to do currentFrameImage, to me.

  • GLKit Memory Leak copywithZone

    - by TommyT39
    Running the instruments utility against the game I'm writing shows a bunch of memory leaks related to copy with Zone when I cycle through an array and draw some simple cube objects. Im not sure the best way to track this down as I'm new to OpenGL programming. My program is using ARC and is set to build for IOS 5. I am initializing GLKit to use OPenGl 2.0 and using the BafeEffect so I don't have to write my own shaders etc.. This shouldn't be rocket science. Im guessing that I must be not releasing something within the draw function. Below is the code to my draw function. Could you guys take a look and see if anything stands out as the problem? One other thing to note is that I'm using 15 different textures, the cubes can be 1 of 15 different ones. I have a property set on the cube class for the texture and I set it as I create the cube in there array. But I do load all 15 when my programs view did load starts.They are small .jps files that are less than 75k each and each cube uses the same texture all the way around so shouldn't be too big of an issue. Here is the code to my draw function: - (void)draw { GLKMatrix4 xRotationMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeXRotation(rotation.x); GLKMatrix4 yRotationMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeYRotation(rotation.y); GLKMatrix4 zRotationMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeZRotation(rotation.z); GLKMatrix4 scaleMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeScale(scale.x, scale.y, scale.z); GLKMatrix4 translateMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeTranslation(position.x, position.y, position.z); GLKMatrix4 modelMatrix = GLKMatrix4Multiply(translateMatrix,GLKMatrix4Multiply(scaleMatrix,GLKMatrix4Multiply(zRotationMatrix, GLKMatrix4Multiply(yRotationMatrix, xRotationMatrix)))); GLKMatrix4 viewMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakeLookAt(0, 0, 1, 0, 0, -5, 0, 1, 0); effect.transform.modelviewMatrix = GLKMatrix4Multiply(viewMatrix, modelMatrix); effect.transform.projectionMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakePerspective(0.125*M_TAU, 1.0, 2, 0); effect.texture2d0.name = wallTexture.name; [effect prepareToDraw]; glEnable(GL_DEPTH_TEST); glEnable(GL_CULL_FACE); glEnableVertexAttribArray(GLKVertexAttribPosition); glVertexAttribPointer(GLKVertexAttribPosition, 3, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 0, triangleVertices); glEnableVertexAttribArray(GLKVertexAttribTexCoord0); glVertexAttribPointer(GLKVertexAttribTexCoord0, 2, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 0, textureCoordinates); glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLES, 0, 18); glDisableVertexAttribArray(GLKVertexAttribPosition); glDisableVertexAttribArray(GLKVertexAttribTexCoord0); }

  • Refactoring Singleton Overuse

    - by drharris
    Today I had an epiphany, and it was that I was doing everything wrong. Some history: I inherited a C# application, which was really just a collection of static methods, a completely procedural mess of C# code. I refactored this the best I knew at the time, bringing in lots of post-college OOP knowledge. To make a long story short, many of the entities in code have turned out to be Singletons. Today I realized I needed 3 new classes, which would each follow the same Singleton pattern to match the rest of the software. If I keep tumbling down this slippery slope, eventually every class in my application will be Singleton, which will really be no logically different from the original group of static methods. I need help on rethinking this. I know about Dependency Injection, and that would generally be the strategy to use in breaking the Singleton curse. However, I have a few specific questions related to this refactoring, and all about best practices for doing so. How acceptable is the use of static variables to encapsulate configuration information? I have a brain block on using static, and I think it is due to an early OO class in college where the professor said static was bad. But, should I have to reconfigure the class every time I access it? When accessing hardware, is it ok to leave a static pointer to the addresses and variables needed, or should I continually perform Open() and Close() operations? Right now I have a single method acting as the controller. Specifically, I continually poll several external instruments (via hardware drivers) for data. Should this type of controller be the way to go, or should I spawn separate threads for each instrument at the program's startup? If the latter, how do I make this object oriented? Should I create classes called InstrumentAListener and InstrumentBListener? Or is there some standard way to approach this? Is there a better way to do global configuration? Right now I simply have Configuration.Instance.Foo sprinkled liberally throughout the code. Almost every class uses it, so perhaps keeping it as a Singleton makes sense. Any thoughts? A lot of my classes are things like SerialPortWriter or DataFileWriter, which must sit around waiting for this data to stream in. Since they are active the entire time, how should I arrange these in order to listen for the events generated when data comes in? Any other resources, books, or comments about how to get away from Singletons and other pattern overuse would be helpful.

  • Memory Management iOS dev app doesn't work after a few detail items

    - by user1434846
    I am working on a project with a tableView controller and the detail views contains CMMotionManager.When i open 5 or 6 detailViews all goes well,but after a while the app goes slow and finally crashes.On instruments the only leak is on main.m , also i must say that I'm using ARC and i can't dealloc or realese the instances. Here is the code: First the table view: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib. self.title = @"Movement";//Master View Controller title bar UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"jg_navibar.png"]; [self.navigationController.navigationBar setBackgroundImage:image forBarMetrics:UIBarMetricsDefault]; //Init the array with data bodypartsMutableArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithCapacity:26]; BodypartData *part1 = [[BodypartData alloc] init]; part1.bodypartname = @"Shoulder"; part1.movementname = @"Flexion"; part1.fullimageStartingPosition=[UIImage imageNamed:@"2_shoulder_flexion_end_position.jpg"]; part1.fullimageEndedPosition=[UIImage imageNamed:@"2_shoulder_flexion_end_position.jpg"]; part1.thumbimage=[UIImage imageNamed:@"1_shoulder_flexion_landmarks_thumb.jpg"]; [bodypartsMutableArray addObject:part1]; ......... } then the cell: - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:@"MyBasicCell"]; BodypartData *part = [self.bodypartsMutableArray objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; cell.textLabel.text =[NSString stringWithFormat:part.movementname]; cell.detailTextLabel.text =[NSString stringWithFormat:part.bodypartname]; cell.imageView.image =part.thumbimage; return cell; } and the the detailViewdid load: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib. // Init motionManager object and set the Update Interval _motionManager = [[CMMotionManager alloc]init]; _motionManager.deviceMotionUpdateInterval=1/60; //60 Hz [_motionManager startGyroUpdates]; if (_motionManager.gyroAvailable) { _motionManager.gyroUpdateInterval = 1.0/60.0; [_motionManager startDeviceMotionUpdatesToQueue:[NSOperationQueue currentQueue] withHandler: ^(CMDeviceMotion *motion, NSError *error) { CMAttitude *attitude = motion.attitude; //Calculation with rotationMatrix m11 = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%.02f", attitude.rotationMatrix.m11]; m12 = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%.02f", attitude.rotationMatrix.m12]; m13 = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%.02f", attitude.rotationMatrix.m13]; ......... }

  • Unable to fetch Json data from remote url

    - by user3772611
    I am cracking my head to solve this thing. I am unable to fetch the JSON data from remote REST API. I need to fetch the JSOn data nd display the "html_url" field from the JSON data on my website. I saw that you need the below charset and content type for fetching JSON. <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="application/json"> </head> <body> <p>My Instruments page</p> <ul></ul> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jqueryui/1.10.3/jquery-ui.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { alert("Inside the script"); $.getJSON(" https://pki.zendesk.com/api/v2/help_center/sections/200268985/articles.json", function (obj) { alert("Inside the getJSON"); $.each(obj, function (key, value) { $("ul").append("<li>" + value.html_url + "</li>"); }); }); }); </script> </body> </html> I referred to following example on jsfiddle http://jsfiddle.net/2xTjf/29/ The "http://date.jsontest.com" given in this example also doesn't work in my code. The first alert is pops but not the other one. I am a novice at JSON/ Jquery. i used jsonlint.com to find if it has valid JSON, it came out valid. I tested using chrome REST client too. What am I missing here ? Help me please ! Thanks in anticipation.

  • Windows Azure Recipe: Mobile Computing

    - by Clint Edmonson
    A while back, mashups were all the rage. The idea was to compose solutions that provided aggregation and integration across applications and services to make information more available, useful, and personal. Mashups ushered in the era of Web 2.0 in all it’s socially connected goodness. They taught us that to be successful, we needed to add web service APIs to our web applications. Web and client based mashups met with great success and have evolved even further with the introduction of the internet connected smartphone. Nothing is more available, useful, or personal than our smartphones. The current generation of cloud connected mobile computing mashups allow our mobilized workforces to receive, process, and react to information from disparate sources faster than ever before. Drivers Integration Reach Time to market Solution Here’s a sketch of a prototypical mobile computing solution using Windows Azure: Ingredients Web Role – with the phone running a dedicated client application, the web role is responsible for serving up backend web services that implement the solution’s core connected functionality. Database – used to store core operational and workflow data for the solution’s web services. Access Control – this service is used to authenticate and manage users identity, roles, and groups, possibly in conjunction with 3rd identity providers such as Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook. Worker Role – this role is used to handle the orchestration of long-running, complex, asynchronous operations. While much of the integration and interaction with other services can be handled directly by the mobile client application, it’s possible that the backend may need to integrate with 3rd party services as well. Offloading this work to a worker role better distributes computing resources and keeps the web roles focused on direct client interaction. Queues – these provide reliable, persistent messaging between applications and processes. They are an absolute necessity once asynchronous processing is involved. Queues facilitate the flow of distributed events and allow a solution to send push notifications back to mobile devices at appropriate times. Training & Resources These links point to online Windows Azure training labs and resources where you can learn more about the individual ingredients described above. (Note: The entire Windows Azure Training Kit can also be downloaded for offline use.) Windows Azure (16 labs) Windows Azure is an internet-scale cloud computing and services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services which can be used individually or together. It gives developers the choice to build web applications; applications running on connected devices, PCs, or servers; or hybrid solutions offering the best of both worlds. New or enhanced applications can be built using existing skills with the Visual Studio development environment and the .NET Framework. With its standards-based and interoperable approach, the services platform supports multiple internet protocols, including HTTP, REST, SOAP, and plain XML SQL Azure (7 labs) Microsoft SQL Azure delivers on the Microsoft Data Platform vision of extending the SQL Server capabilities to the cloud as web-based services, enabling you to store structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. Windows Azure Services (9 labs) As applications collaborate across organizational boundaries, ensuring secure transactions across disparate security domains is crucial but difficult to implement. Windows Azure Services provides hosted authentication and access control using powerful, secure, standards-based infrastructure. Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone The Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone is designed to make it easier for you to build mobile applications that leverage cloud services running in Windows Azure. The toolkit includes Visual Studio project templates for Windows Phone and Windows Azure, class libraries optimized for use on the phone, sample applications, and documentation Windows Azure Toolkit for iOS The Windows Azure Toolkit for iOS is a toolkit for developers to make it easy to access Windows Azure storage services from native iOS applications. The toolkit can be used for both iPhone and iPad applications, developed using Objective-C and XCode. Windows Azure Toolkit for Android The Windows Azure Toolkit for Android is a toolkit for developers to make it easy to work with Windows Azure from native Android applications. The toolkit can be used for native Android applications developed using Eclipse and the Android SDK. • Create bullet physics rigid body along the vertices of a blender model

    - by Krishnabhadra
    I am working on my first 3D game, for iphone, and I am using Blender to create models, Cocos3D game engine and Bullet for physics simulation. I am trying to learn the use of physics engine. What I have done I have created a small model in blender which contains a Cube (default blender cube) at the origin and a UVSphere hovering exactly on top of this cube (without touching the cube) I saved the file to get MyModel.blend. Then I used File -> Export -> PVRGeoPOD (.pod/.h/.cpp) in Blender to export the model to .pod format to use along with Cocos3D. In the coding side, I added necessary bullet files to my Cocos3D template project in XCode. I am also using a bullet objective C wrapper. -(void) initializeScene { _physicsWorld = [[CC3PhysicsWorld alloc] init]; [_physicsWorld setGravity:0 y:-9.8 z:0]; /*Setup camera, lamp etc.*/ .......... ........... /*Add models created in blender to scene*/ [self addContentFromPODFile: @"MyModel.pod"]; /*Create OpenGL ES buffers*/ [self createGLBuffers]; /*get models*/ CC3MeshNode* cubeNode = (CC3MeshNode*)[self getNodeNamed:@"Cube"]; CC3MeshNode* sphereNode = (CC3MeshNode*)[self getNodeNamed:@"Sphere"]; /*Those boring grey colors..*/ [cubeNode setColor:ccc3(255, 255, 0)]; [sphereNode setColor:ccc3(255, 0, 0)]; float *cVertexData = (float*)((CC3VertexArrayMesh*)cubeNode.mesh).vertexLocations.vertices; int cVertexCount = (CC3VertexArrayMesh*)cubeNode.mesh).vertexLocations.vertexCount; btTriangleMesh* cTriangleMesh = new btTriangleMesh(); // for (int i = 0; i < cVertexCount * 3; i+=3) { // printf("\n%f", cVertexData[i]); // printf("\n%f", cVertexData[i+1]); // printf("\n%f", cVertexData[i+2]); // } /*Trying to create a triangle mesh that curresponds the cube in 3D space.*/ int offset = 0; for (int i = 0; i < (cVertexCount / 3); i++){ unsigned int index1 = offset; unsigned int index2 = offset+6; unsigned int index3 = offset+12; cTriangleMesh->addTriangle( btVector3(cVertexData[index1], cVertexData[index1+1], cVertexData[index1+2] ), btVector3(cVertexData[index2], cVertexData[index2+1], cVertexData[index2+2] ), btVector3(cVertexData[index3], cVertexData[index3+1], cVertexData[index3+2] )); offset += 18; } [self releaseRedundantData]; /*Create a collision shape from triangle mesh*/ btBvhTriangleMeshShape* cTriMeshShape = new btBvhTriangleMeshShape(cTriangleMesh,true); btCollisionShape *sphereShape = new btSphereShape(1); /*Create physics objects*/ gTriMeshObject = [_physicsWorld createPhysicsObjectTrimesh:cubeNode shape:cTriMeshShape mass:0 restitution:1.0 position:cubeNode.location]; sphereObject = [_physicsWorld createPhysicsObject:sphereNode shape:sphereShape mass:1 restitution:0.1 position:sphereNode.location]; sphereObject.rigidBody->setDamping(0.1,0.8); } When I run the sphere and cube shows up fine. I expect the sphere object to fall directly on top of the cube, since I have given it a mass of 1 and the physics world gravity is given as -9.8 in y direction. But What is happening the spere rotates around cube three or times and then just jumps out of the scene. Then I know I have some basic misunderstanding about the whole process. So my question is, how can I create a physics collision shape which corresponds to the shape of a particular mesh model. I may need complex shapes than cube and sphere, but before going into them I want to understand the concepts.

  • Disneyland Inside Out on iPhone and Android

    - by Ryan Cain
    It's hard to believe October was the last time I was over here on my blog.  Ironically after getter the developer phone from Microsoft I have been knee deep in iPhone programming and for the past few weeks Android programming again.  This time I've spent all my non-working hours programming a fun project for my "other" website, Disneyland Inside Out.  Disneyland Inside Out, a vacation planning site for Disneyland in California, has been around in various forms since June 1996.  It has always been a place for me to explore new technologies and learn about some of the new trends on the web.  I recently migrated the site over to DotNetNuke and have been building out custom modules for DNN.  I've also been hacking things together w/ the URLRewrite module in IIS 7.5 to provide strong SEO optimized URLs.  I can't say all that has really stuck within the DNN model of doing things, but it has worked pretty well. As part of my learning process, I spent most of the Fall bringing Disneyland Inside Out to the iPhone.  I will post more details on my development experiences later.  But this project gave me a really great opportunity to get a good feel for Objective-C development.  After 3 months I actually feel somewhat competent in the language and iPhone SDK, instead of just floundering around getting things to work.  The project also gave me a chance to play with some new frameworks on the iPhone and really dig into the Facebook SDK.  I also dug into some of the Gowalla REST api's as well.  We've been live with the app in iTunes for just about 10 days now, and have been sitting in the top 200 of free travel apps for the past few days.  You can get more info and the direct iTunes download link on our site: Disneyland Inside Out for iPhone Since launching the iPhone version I have gotten back into Android development, porting the Disneyland Inside Out app over to Android.  As I said in my first review of iPhone vs. Android, coming from a managed code background, Android is much easier to get going with.  I just about 3 weeks total I will have about 85 - 90% of the functionality up and running in the Android app, that took probably 1.5 - 2x's that time for iPhone.  That isn't a totally fair comparison as I am much more comfortable w/ Xcode and Objective-C today and can get some of the basic stuff done much faster than I could in the fall.  Though I'd say some of the hardest code to debug is still the null pointer issues on objects that were dealloc'd too early in Objective-C.  This isn't too bad with the NSZoombies enabled for synchronous code, but when you have a lot of async, which my app does, it can be hairy at times to track exactly what was causing the issue.   I will post more details later, as I am trying to wrap up a beta of the Android app today.  But in the meantime, if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad head on over to the site and take a look at my app.

  • What is a good design pattern / lib for iOS 5 to synchronize with a web service?

    - by Junto
    We are developing an iOS application that needs to synchronize with a remote server using web services. The existing web services have an "operations" style rather than REST (implemented in WCF but exposing JSON HTTP endpoints). We are unsure of how to structure the web services to best fit with iOS and would love some advice. We are also interested in how to manage the synchronization process within iOS. Without going into detailed specifics, the application allows the user to estimate repair costs at a remote site. These costs are broken down by room and item. If the user has an internet connection this data can be sent back to the server. Multiple photographs can be taken of each item, but they will be held in a separate queue, which sends when the connection is optimal (ideally wifi). Our backend application controls the unique ids for each room and item. Thus, each time we send these costs to the server, the server echoes the central database ids back, thus, that they can be synchronized in the mobile app. I have simplified this a little, since the operations contract is actually much larger, but I just want to illustrate the basic requirements without complicating matters. Firstly, the web service architecture: We currently have two operations: GetCosts and UpdateCosts. My assumption is that if we used a strict REST architecture we would need to break our single web service operations into multiple smaller services. This would make the services much more chatty and we would also have to guarantee a delivery order from the app. For example, we need to make sure that containing rooms are added before the item. Although this seems much more RESTful, our perception is that these extra calls are expensive connections (security checks, database calls, etc). Does the type of web api (operation over service focus) determine chunky vs chatty? Since this is mobile (3G), are we better handling lots of smaller messages, or a few large ones? Secondly, the iOS side. What is the current advice on how to manage data synchronization within the iOS (5) app itself. We need multiple queues and we need to guarantee delivery order in each queue (and technically, ordering between queues). The server needs to control unique ids and other properties and echo them back to the application. The application then needs to update an internal database and when re-updating, make sure the correct ids are available in the update message (essentially multiple inserts and updates in one call). Our backend has a ton of business logic operating on these cost estimates. We don't want any of this in the app itself. Currently the iOS app sends the cost data, and then the server echoes that data back with populated ids (and other data). The existing cost data is deleted and the echoed response data is added to the client database on the device. This is causing us problems, because any photos might not have been sent, but the original entity tree has been removed and replaced. Obviously updating the costs tree rather than replacing it would remove this problem, but I'm not sure if there are any nice xcode libraries out there to do such things. I welcome any advice you might have.

  • Bowing to User Experience

    As a consumer of geeky news it is hard to check my Google Reader without running into two or three posts about Apples iPad and in particular the changes to the developer guidelines which seemingly restrict developers to using Apples Xcode tool and Objective-C language for iPad apps. One of the alternatives to Objective-C affected, is MonoTouch, an option with some appeal to me as it is based on the Mono implementation of C#. Seemingly restricted is the key word here, as far as I can tell, no official announcement has been made about its fate. For more details around MonoTouch for iPhone OS, check out Miguel de Icazas post: http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2010/Apr-28.html. These restrictions have provoked some outrage as the perception is that Apple is arrogantly restricting developers freedom to create applications as they choose and perhaps unwittingly shortchanging iPhone/iPad users who wont benefit from these now never-to-be-made great applications. Apples response has mostly been to say they are concentrating on providing a certain user experience to their customers, and to do this, they insist everyone uses the tools they approve. Which isnt a surprising line of reasoning given Apple restricts the hardware used and content of the apps already. The vogue term for this approach is curated, as in a benevolent museum director selecting only the finest artifacts for display or a wise gardener arranging the plants in a garden just so. If this is what a curated experience is like it is hard to argue that consumers are not responding. My iPhone is probably the most satisfying piece of technology I own. Coming from the Razr, it really was an revolution in how the form factor, interface and user experience all tied together. While the curated approach reinvented the smart phone genre, it is easy to forget that this is not a new approach for Apple. Macbooks and Macs are Apple hardware that run Apple software. And theyve been successful, but not quite in the same way as the iPhone or iPad (based on early indications). Why not? Well a curated approach can only be wildly successful if the curator a) makes the right choices and b) offers choices that no one else has. Although its advantages are eroding, the iPhone was different from other phones, a unique, focused, touch-centric experience. The iPad is an attempt to define another category of computing. Macs and Macbooks are great devices, but are not fundamentally a different user experience than a PC, you still have windows, file folders, mouse and keyboard, and similar applications. So the big question for Apple is can they hold on to their market advantage, continuing innovating in user experience and stay on top? Or are they going be like Xerox, and the rest of the world says thank you for the windows metaphor, now let me implement that better? It will be exciting to watch, with Android already a viable competitor and Microsoft readying Windows Phone 7. And to close the loop back to the restrictions on developing for iPhone OS. At this point the main target appears to be Adobe and Adobe Flash. Apples calculation is that a) they dont need those developers or b) the developers they want will learn Apples stuff anyway. My guess is that they are correct; that as much as I like the idea of developers having more options, I am not going to buy a competitors product to spite Apple unless that product is just as usable. For a non-technical consumer, I dont know that this conversation even factors into the buying decision. If it did, wed be talking about how Microsoft is trying to retake a slice of market share from the behemoth that is Linux.Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Core Data migration problem: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model

    - by John Gallagher
    The Background A Cocoa Non Document Core Data project with two Managed Object Models. Model 1 stays the same. Model 2 has changed, so I want to migrate the store. I've created a new version by Design Data Model Add Model Version in Xcode. The difference between versions is a single relationship that's been changed from to a one to many. I've made my changes to the model, then saved. I've made a new Mapping Model that has the old model as a source and new model as a destination. I've ensured all Mapping Models and Data Models and are being compiled and all are copied to the Resource folder of my app bundle. I've switched on migrations by passing in a dictionary with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption key as [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] when adding the Persistent Store. Rather than merging all models in the bundle, I've specified the two models I want to use (model 1 and the new version of model 2) and merged them using modelByMergingModels: The Problem No matter what I do to migrate, I get the error message: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model." What I've Tried I clean after every single build. I've tried various combinations of having only the model I'm migrating to in Resources, being compiled, or both. Since the error message implies it can't find the source model for my migration, I've tried having every version of the model in both the Resources folder and being compiled. I've made sure I'm not making a really basic error by switching back to the original version of my data model. The app runs fine. I've deleted the Mapping Model and the new version of the model, cleaned, then recreated both. I've tried making a different change in the new model - deleting an entity instead. I'm at my wits end. I can't help but think I've made a huge mistake somewhere that I'm not seeing. Any ideas?

  • Interpret Objective C scripts at runtime on iPhone?

    - by Brad Parks
    Is there anyway to load an objective c script at runtime, and run it against the classes/methods/objects/functions in the current iPhone app? The reason i ask is that I've been playing around with iPhone wax, a lua interpreter that can be embedded in an iPhone app, and it works very nicely, in the sense that any object/method/function that's publically available in your Objective C code is automatically bridged, and available in lua. This allows you to rapidly prototype applications by simply making the core of your app be lua files that are in the users documents directory. Just reload the app, and you can test out changes to your lua files without needing to rebuild the app in XCode - a big time saver! But, with Apples recent 3.1.3 SDK stuff, it got me thinking that the safest approach for doing this type of rapid prototypeing would be if you could use Objective C as the interpreted code... That way, worst case scenario, you could just compile it into your app before your release, instead. I have heard that the lua source can be compiled to byte code, and linked in at build time, but I think the ultimate safe thing would be if the scripted source was in objective c, not lua. This leads me to wondering (i've searched, but come up with nothing) if there are any examples on how to embed an Objective C Interpreter in an iPhone app? This would allow you to rapidly prototype your app against the current classes that are built into your binary, and, when your about to deploy your app, instead of running the classes through the in app interpreter, you compile them in instead.

  • UIImagePicker on full screen on iPad

    - by Archip
    For my tests, I need to create a simple app on the iPad to step 1. loads an image from the Photo library (UIImagePickerController). step 2. Then, this image is converted into texture and displayed into an OpenGL ES view. I started to define the app with the XCode Open GL ES template. Step 2 is Okay. But I have a problem launching the UIImagePickerController (step 1). On iPad, to create a UIImagePickerController, we need to use a UIPopoverController. But to create a UIPopover, we need to attach it to a content view controller In my app, I dont want to define a specific view controller (Navigation or SplitView or TabBar...). I just need to have the UIImagePicker displayed on full screen when launching the app. I am looking for a programatical solution with a minimum of lines of code added from the Open GL ES iPad template, to perform step 1 (step 2 is okay for me). any code available? Thank you for your help Seb

  • NSString variable out of scope in sub-class (iPhone/Obj-C)

    - by Rich
    I am following along with an example in a book with the code exactly as it is in the example code as well as from the book, and I'm getting an error at runtime. I'll try to describe the life cycle of this variable as good as I can. I have a controller class with a nested array that is populated with string literals (NSArray of NSArrays, the nested NSArrays initialized with arrayWithObjects: where the objects are all string literals - @"some string"). I access these strings with a helper method added via a category on NSArray (to pull strings out of a nested array). My controller gets a reference to this string and assigns it to a NSString property on a child controller using dot notation. The code looks like this (nestedObjectAtIndexPath is my helper method): NSString *rowKey = [rowKeys nestedObjectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; controller.keypath = rowKey; keypath is a synthesized nonatomic, retain property defined in a based class. When I hit a breakpoint in the controller at the above code, the NSString's value is as expected. When I hit the next breakpoint inside the child controller, the object id of the keypath property is the same as before, but instead of showing me the value of the NSString, XCode says that the variable is "out of scope" which is also the error I see in the console. This also happens in another sub-class of the same parent. I tried googling, and I saw slightly similar cases where people were suggesting this had to do with retain counts. I was under the impression that by using dot notation on a synthesized property, my class would be using an "auto generated accessor" that would be increasing my retain count for me so that I wouldn't have this problem. Could there be any implications because I'm accessing it in a sub-class and the prop is defined in the parent? I don't see anything in the book's errata about this, but the book is relatively new (Apress - More iPhone 3 Dev). I also have double checked that my code matches the example 100 times.

  • Mixing Objective-C and C++

    - by helixed
    Hello, I'm trying to mix together some Objective-C code with C++. I've always heard it was possible, but I've never actually tried it before. When I try to compile the code, I get a bunch of errors. Here's a simple example I've created which illustrates my problems: AView.h #import <Cocoa/Cocoa.h> #include "B.h" @interface AView : NSView { B *b; } -(void) setB: (B *) theB; @end AView.m #import "AView.h" @implementation AView - (id)initWithFrame:(NSRect)frame { self = [super initWithFrame:frame]; if (self) { // Initialization code here. } return self; } - (void)drawRect:(NSRect)dirtyRect { // Drawing code here. } -(void) setB: (B *) theB { b = theB; } @end B.h #include <iostream> class B { B() { std::cout << "Hello from C++"; } }; Here's the list of errors I get when I try to compile this: /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/B.h:1:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/B.h:1:20: error: iostream: No such file or directory /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/B.h:3:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/B.h:3: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before 'B' /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.h:5:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.h:5: error: expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'B' /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.h:8:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.h:8: error: expected ')' before 'B' /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.m:26:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.m:26: error: expected ')' before 'B' /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.m:27:0 /Users/helixed/Desktop/Example/AView.m:27: error: 'b' undeclared (first use in this function) All I'm doing to compile this right now is using the default compiler built into Xcode. I didn't edit the Cocoa Application template in any way other than adding the two files I created and chaing the NSView to AView in the xib file. Could somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, helixed

  • Ivar definitions show 'long' type encoding as 'long long' type encoding

    - by Frank C.
    I've found what I think may be a bug with Ivar and Objective-C runtime. I'm using XCode 3.2.1 and associated libraries, developing a 64 bit app on X86_64 (MacBook Pro). Where I would expect the type encoding for the following "longVal" to be 'l', the Ivar encoding is showing a 'q' (which is a 'long long'). Anyone else seeing this? Simplified code and output follows: Code: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import <objc/runtime.h> @interface Bug : NSObject { long longVal; long long longerVal; } @property (nonatomic,assign) long longVal; @property (nonatomic,assign) long long longerVal; @end @implementation Bug @synthesize longVal,longerVal; @end int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) { NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; unsigned int ivarCount=0; Ivar *ivars= class_copyIvarList([Bug class], &ivarCount); for(unsigned int x=0;x<ivarCount;x++) { NSLog(@"Name [%@] encoding [%@]", [NSString stringWithCString:ivar_getName(ivars[x]) encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding], [NSString stringWithCString:ivar_getTypeEncoding(ivars[x]) encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]); } [pool drain]; return 0; } And here is output from debug console: This GDB was configured as "x86_64-apple-darwin".tty /dev/ttys000 Loading program into debugger… sharedlibrary apply-load-rules all Program loaded. run [Switching to process 6048] Running… 2010-03-17 22:16:29.138 ivarbug[6048:a0f] Name [longVal] encoding [q] 2010-03-17 22:16:29.146 ivarbug[6048:a0f] Name [longerVal] encoding [q] (gdb) continue Not a pretty picture! -- Frank

  • "Does not make sense to draw an image" - Warning after upgrade to MountainLion

    - by Tom
    After I upgraded my programming machine to MountainLion and XCode to the new version I get this warning printed into the console everytime I run my application: It does not make sense to draw an image when [NSGraphicsContext currentContext] is nil. This is a programming error. Break on void _NSWarnForDrawingImageWithNoCurrentContext() to debug. This will be logged only once. This may break in the future. I'm not using an Image anywhere in my Application and I searched the whole project for an image but couldn't find one. Does anybody know what could cause this? I'm using 2 nib files btw: One Popover and the Mainwindow. Neither of them contains an image. Edit: I found the line when this appears: [self.popover showRelativeToRect:[appDelegate.menulet frame] ofView:appDelegate.menulet preferredEdge:NSMinYEdge]; But none of those object is nil. Any suggestions? Edit 2: The Menulet is a NSView subclass btw. So I'm passing a view.
