• Do you need all that data?

  I read an amazing post over on ars technica (link: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/03/the-software-brains-behind-the-particle-colliders.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss) abvout the LHC, or as they are also known, the "particle colliders". Beyond just the pure scientific geek awesomeness, these instruments have the potential to collect more data than you can (or possibly should) store. Actually, this problem has a lot in common with a BI system. There's so much granular detail available in the source systems that a designer has to decide how, and how much, to roll up the data. Whenver you do that, you lose fidelity, but in many cases that's OK. Take, for example, your car's speedometer. You don't actually need to track each and every point of speed as it happens. You only need to know that you're hovering around the speed limit at a certain point in time. Since this is the way that humans percieve data, is there some lesson we should take in the design of data "flows" - and what implications does this have for new technologies like StreamInsight? • /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed with an HP LaserJet p3005

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

• How do I install the newest Flash beta for Minefield on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  Hi, I'm using a fully updated Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit which is pretty much bog standard except I'm using Minefield from the Mozilla daily PPA in addition to Firefox as provided by Ubuntu. I want to try the newest beta of Flash (10.3 as of writing). The installation instructions simply say "drop libflashplayer.so into the plugin folder of your browser". This the 32-bit version. Currently I'm using Flash as provided by the package flashplugin-installer (ver. 10.2.152.27ubuntu0.10.10.1). Going to about:plugins in Minefield/Firefox says the version of Flash I'm running is 10.2 r152 and the file responsible is npwrapper.libflashplayer.so. I have two files with that name on my system. One is /usr/share/ubufox/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so which is a broken link to /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so. The other is /var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so (note var instead of usr). I also have a file simply called libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/. So it seems Firefox/Minefield gets its Flash plugin from a file that doesn't exist, and replacing libflashplayer.so with the one in the archive from Adobe has no effect. Since I want to try the 32-bit version I have to use the wrapper. The only way I know how is through the flashplugin-installer package. How would I go about installing the newest 32-bit beta Flash if possible at all? And where is "the plugin folder of my browser"?

• Developers are strange

  Why do developers always use the GUI tools in SQL Server? I've always found this irritating and just vaguely assumed it's because they aren't familiar with SQL syntax. But when you think about it it, it's a genuine puzzle. Developers type code all day - really heavy code too like generics, lamda functions and extension methods. They (thankfully) scorn the Visual Studio stuff where you drag a table onto the class and it pastes in lots of code to query the table into a DataSet or something. But when they want to add a column to a table, without fail they dive into the graphical table designer. And half the time the script it generates does horrible things like copy the table to another one with the new column, delete the old table, and rename the new table. Which is fine if your users don't care about uptime. Is ALTER TABLE ADD <column definition> really that hard? I just don't get it.

• Firefox does not print flash content

  I am using Firefox 3.6.15 on a Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit Operating System, Intel Core i7 CPU, 3.33GHz, 10BG RAM, by Hewlett-Packard. Firefox does not print flash content, aka swf objects, nor does it show them in the print preview pane...I want to print out the entire web page with the flash content. I seem to only be able to see flash and html content together in print preview and to print in IE8. I have tried to google this issue, but could not find a solution. I was trying to print preview/print out the following site: http://www.discovertheponds.com/. Flash content will display in print preview and print in IE8, but neither print preview or print in Firefox. I have also updated the Java on my computer to the most recent update, and ran the firefox plug-in checker at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ . I do run Firebug and Web Developer, but have currently disabled them. Is this problem on my end, meaning some issue with my computer...or is this because of how the website was programmed in HTML/Flash...or is this a bug with Firefox? I am a website designer and am also concerned that others will not be able print sites I develop or have already developed that have flash content from Firefox. I used to think Firefox was better than IE at everything. What happened here? Was it some change in Firefox's version that caused this problem?

• UX Design Principles Pluralsight course review

  I've just finished the "Creating User Experiences: Fundamental Design Principles" course on Pluralsight, I am glad I took it, and here is why you should. The course is held by Billy Hollis, an internationally known author and speaker focused on user experience design. It was published in May 2012, so it is quite fresh (You’ll hear some reference to XAML, even if the content is not focused on any particular technology). I think what I liked the most about this course is the fact that Billy is not just imposing design ideas and pushing them in your throat (which would be too confronting for us developers, even if he was right), he spends a fair share amount of time explaining each topics, and illustrate them with great metaphors. If you are a minimum open minded you should get great value out of this course. Billy makes you think outside the box, he encourages you to use your right side brain, and understand design principles by simply looking at what’s around us (physical objects, nature, …). During the course he refers several time to "don't make me think" a book on UX design, which is about giving confidence to users, by making it easier for them to achieve their goals when using your app. Billy thinks that every developer can participate in elaborating good design when building software, not only designers should be involved. Get away of the easy path "let's build functional stuff for now and we will hire a designer later if we have time and budget". The course is also live and interactive as the author suggests that you do some live exercises during each module. He actually makes you realize and understand by yourself the need for change. We’re in a new era of software and devices, where grids and menus aren't enough. You can’t remain satisfied by just making things possible, you need to make them easier for your users. Understanding some fundamental design principles will help. This course can definitely be followed by any developers who wants to improve user experience of software they are working on, and I definitely recommend it.

• Daylight Saving Time Visualized

  When you map out the Daylight Saving Time adjusted sunrise and sunset times over the course of the year, an interesting pattern emerges. Chart designer Germanium writes: I tried to come up with the reason for the daylight saving time change by just looking at the data for sunset and sunrise times. The figure represents sunset and sunrise times thought the year. It shows that the daylight saving time change marked by the lines (DLS) is keeping the sunrise time pretty much constant throughout the whole year, while making the sunset time change a lot. The spread of sunrise times as measured by the standard deviation is 42 minutes, which means that the sunrise time changes within that range the whole year, while the standard deviation for the sunset times is 1:30 hours. Whatever the argument for doing this is, it’s pretty clear that reason is to keep the sunrise time constant. You can read more about the controversial history of Daylight Saving Time here. Talk to a C-level executive, and the conversation turns to mobile, and the question “How do I get me some of that?” comes up. Talk to other developers, and they tell you they’re targeting mobile devices. Mobile has become a big deal as smartphones have taken hold in the consumer marketplace.In the years leading up to the current focus on mobile applications and devices, Web developers have been adding more and more client-side functionality to their applications. You can see this in the use of client-side JavaScript libraries like jQuery.With the growth of the market for mobile devices, the ability to create applications that run across platforms is very important for developers and for businesses that are trying to keep their expenses in check. There are a set of applications, mostly in the area of content consumption (think Amazon.com), that run well in a mobile Web browser. Unfortunately, there are differences between Web browsers on various mobile devices. The goal of the recently introduced jQuery Mobile (jQM) library is to provide cross-browser support to allow developers to build applications that can run across the various mobile Web browsers and provide the same—or at least a very similar—user interface.The jQuery Mobile library was introduced in an alpha release in the fall of 2010 and released to manufacturing in November 2011. At the time of this writing, the current version of jQuery Mobile is 1.1.1. By the time you read this, jQuery Mobile will almost certainly have reached version 1.2.0. The library has been embraced by Microsoft, Adobe and other companies for mobile Web development. In August 2011, jQM had 32 percent market share compared with other mobile JavaScript frameworks such as iWebKit and jQTouch. This market share is impressive given that it started from zero little more than 12 months ago, and the 1.0 release is the first officially supported release.

• BUILD 2013&ndash;Day 2 Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013ndashday-2-summary.aspx Day 1 rocked.  So how could they top that?  By having more goodies to give away!  During the keynote they announced that attendees would get one year of Office 365, 100 GB of SkyDrive and one year of Adobe Cloud Service.  Overall they key note was long with more information shot at you than you could possibly absorb.  They went about 20 minutes over time which made me think that they could have split it to a 3rd keynote and given us a better idea on some of these topics and perhaps addressed the one open question that was floating around Twitter.  That is, what is going to happen with XBox development.  It sounded like there was a quick side mention of that, but I missed it. The rest of the day was packed with great sessions full of Windows 8, Azure and Windows Phone goodness.  I had planned on attending Scott Hanselman’s talk, but they had so many people this they had to push to an overflow room.  Stay tuned from session summaries later. The day was topped off by an attendee party across from the San Francisco Giant’s ball park.  It was kind of quirky and and fun.  They set it up on one of the piers in the bay and had food served by food trucks.  You would be surprised how good the food was.  Add in some pool tables, fooseball, video games, a DJ, a comedian/musician and plenty of spirits and it was a great way to end day 2. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013

• Recommended method for XML level loading in XNA

  I want to use Blender as my level designer tool for an XNA game. • Using Scrum on small projects where Owner doesn't want to be involved

  Recently I've been reading and learning quite a lot about scrum and I like it a lot. However, I do have a couple of likely scenarios in my head to which I don't know the solution. So let's say that I might want to organize an agile team of (for instance) four web developers (one of them UI/UX designer). This team would operate on scrum principles. Initially we would probably be working on projects like landing pages for ordinary people's small businesses, like renting apartments, selling cookies... Such customers simply can't be set with Product Owner role (IMHO), because they usually expect to hire a company, give them the overall project goal with some details, and then expect the job to be done (including a lot of decision making) with as little of their involvement as possible (in their opinion, they have more important things to do). Let's say I'd like to engage myself in a developer/scrum master role (I know that even that is debatable, being a team member and scrum master at once), so I simply shouldn't take the role of the product owner as well. So as for my questions: If I'm my company's business owner, do I simply need to be a product owner as well (do these roles include each other)? Can I employ a sales person which might have the product owner role? Would it be better if it is an experienced developer instead of a sales person? Is this even a smart move? Lastly, is there another agile approach that might better suit my position? EDIT: Thank you everyone for good inputs. I added some comments, any aditional info will be greatly appreciated.

• From .psd to working HTML and CSS - help me suck less

  I am not much of a designer. My strength lies in coding. That said, I'm often forced into the role of "The Man," responsible for all aspects of site creation. So, that said I'm wondering if the pros can give me tips/solutions/links to tutorials to my main questions. Resolution. What should I aim for? What are the lower and upper edges I should be aware of? I know that systems like 960 Grid were popular recently. Is that the number I should still aim for? Slicing up a .psd - are there any tricks I should know? I've always found it difficult to get my slices pixel perfect. I'm also really slow at it. I must be looking at it wrong, or missing something fundamental. The same goes for text. Layouts are always filled with the classic "Lorem...", but I can never seem to get real content to fit quite as well on the screen. The advanced (to me, anyway) looking things, like a part of a logo/image overlaying what looks like a content area. How does one do that? How do layouts change/are informed by the decision to go fixed or liquid? Again, any tips/tricks/suggestions/tutorials you can share would be greatly appreciated.

• After update, flash plugin playing video too fast or too slow

  Last night I did an update and reboot. After that, I couldn't reliably play any flash videos. They would either go too fast or stutter (as if they were buffering every 2 seconds). This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome, however I'll troubleshoot in Chrome because it's easier to enable/disable plugins at will. With PPAPI enabled (and npapi disabled), flash videos play at 1.5x speeds and audio is scrambled. With NPAPI enabled (and ppapi disabled), flash videos stutter and skip, despite showing a decent buffer. From one old thread, I went into pavucontrol and tried disabling the high def audio controller. I also tried disabling Totem plugin to no affect. • Where is the Flash in Chrome?

  I installed Google Chrome. This is the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu. I went into firefox, and went to chrome.google.com, and hit the button. I don't like package managers, and avoid the command line like the pox. Then, I started using Google Chrome. I went to Kongregate, and clicked on a game. It told me I didn't have flash. A few different websites told me the same. I assumed that they must have been wrong. I hit the link to Adobe, to install Flash, and it reassured me; of course, Google Chrome includes Flash. I checked my version - Chrome 5.0.375.126. Of course, I just downloaded it. I scoured the internet for solutions. None worked. Many seemed to involve re-enabling Flash, or something like that. But insofar as I can tell, there is no Flash anywhere in my Chrome. I feel like I bought a Reese's cup, and found solid chocolate. I checked in the Chrome plugin manager, and everything. A few solutions told me to copy some garbage into my command line and hit enter (as almost all solutions to problems on linux entail). I did it, reluctantly, and it did nothing. I thought Flash was supposed to come with Chrome. But it didn't. Sooooo... What gives?   It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. • How do web-developers do web-design when freelancing?

  So I got my first job recently as junior web-developer. My company creates small/medium sites for wide variety of customers: autobusiness companies, weddign agencies, some sauna websites, etcetc, hope you get my point. They don't do big serious stuff like bank systems or really big systems, it's mostly small/medium-sized websites for startups/medium sized business. My main skills are PHP/MySQL, I also know HTML and a bit of CSS/JS/AJAX. I know that good web-developer must know some backend language (like PHP/Ruby/Python) AND HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery combo. However, I was always wondering. In my company we have web-designer. In other serious organisations I often see the same stuff: web-developers who create business-logic and web-designers, who create design. As far as I know, after designers paint design of website they give it to developers either in PSD or sliced way, and developers put it together with logic, but design is NOT created by developers. Such separation seems very good for full-time job, but I am concerned with question how do freelance web-developers do websites? Do most of them just pay freelance designers to create design for them? Or do some people do both? Reason why I ask - I plan to start some freelancing in my free time after I get good at web-development. But I don't want to create websites with great business-logic but poor design. Neither I want to let someone else create a design for me. I like web-development very much and I am doing quite good, I like design aswell, even though I am a bit lost how to study it and get better at it. But I am scared that going in both directions won't let me become expert, it seems like two totally different jobs and getting really good in both seems very hard. But I really want to do both. What should I do? Thank you!

• Final Release of Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 Released

  If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles.
