  • PHP date function not accepting timezone change

    Hello, I've set up a quick little test to understand and debug timezones between mySQL and PHP. Here's the page: http://dev.feedingo.com/test_dates.php The dates are being created in mySQL using NOW() in a datetime field. The initial problem I was trying to figure out is what timezone mySQL is using and how to sync it up with PHP. But now there's an even weirder issue. In my test app, if you change your timezone, the first strtotime updates properly, but if you pass it into a date() function it doesn't change. This is how im setting the timezone based off the select box. $current_timezone = 'America/New_York'; if( isset( $_GET['timezone'] ) ) $current_timezone = $_GET['timezone']; date_default_timezone_set($current_timezone); Any ideas as to why the date() function isn't accepting the timezone changes?   • SVN: Branches for Every Little Change?

    Hi. We have a client (who has a client, who has a client) who is driving us mad with change requests to a code base (in PHP). Our first response was to just work in a main trunk in SVN, but the client often comes back and requests that a certain change needs to get pushed to the live servers ASAP. On the other hand, other changes get reduced in priority suddenly, which originally came grouped with other changes (seemingly). We are thinking of using a branch for every change request. Is this mad? What other solutions might work? Thanks! Edit: This is a really hard question to choose the correct answer for. Thanks to everybody for your great answers. Edit: I know that the best answer I chose was not particularly popular. I too wanted to find a technical solution to this problem. But now I think that if the client wants software with features that can be deployed in a modular fashion... this problem should not be solved in our use of the version control system. It would have to be designed into the software. Edit: Now it's almost a month later and my coworker/client has convinced me that multiple branches is the way to go. This is not just due to the client's insanity, but also based on our need to be able to determine if a feature is "ready to go" or "needs more work" or whatever. I don't have the SVN with me, but we merge using the advice from the SVN Cookbook: you merge the branch from the revision it was branched to the head revision. Also, using this system, we merge all branches at some point and that becomes the new QA and then live build. Then we branch from that. Last Edit (Perhaps): Months later, this system is still working out for us. We create branches for every ticket and rarely have problems. On the other hand, we do try to keep things separate as far as what people are working on... Two Years Later: We use GIT now, and now this system is actually quite reasonable.

  • Host name change breaking http? Fedora

    OK so I have been messing around on my development server. It has been a while since I have had my head in linux and I suspect I have broken something. I have SSH running and that is working fine. I also have HTTP and I had FTP running also. Earlier today I decided I wanted to rename the machine so I updated the /etc/hosts file and /etc/sysconfig/network. I also changed the server name in the httpd.conf. I rebooted the machine and reconnected to SSH fine. Later I was messing around with the FTP service (trying to tighten up the user security) and when i tried to connect remotely to FTP no joy, it said cannot connect. I thought that was weird but had planned to remove ftp as we will be using github so removed ftp and moved on. Then I tried to connect to the website but major fail. even connecting to the IP address is failing. I used lynx to connect to the localhost and there was my site so something going on at server level. I thought maybe something up with iptables but I have not changed them but tried adding http but still no joy.   • Using AutoHotKey to change audio output source?

    I have two primary audio outputs on my machine: The speakers and a USB headset. Currently, in Windows 7 Professional x64, I type "sound" in the Start search menu to open up this dialog: I only care about the top two options for the purposes of this question. I would like to know if there's a way in AutoHotKey to switch from "Speakers (4- Sennheiser USB Headset)" to "Speakers (VIA High Definition Audio)" so I can avoid having to open this dialog every time I wish to switch.   • Scheduled Jobs during hours of autumn time change

    I'm wondering how other people deal with this scenario. What if you have a job scheduled to run at 1:30 am. In the autumn, when time changes, the hour of 1:00:00 to 1:59:59 repeats itself and so that job would run twice. Could be Windows Task Scheduler, SQL Agent or any other scheduling tool. Most of these tools seem to be based on machine time, not UTC time. If I told it to run the job at UTC time each night, then I wouldn't have the duplicate hour issue.

  • Routing table change to access Internet over mifi

    I have two networks at home. One uses a Verizon mifi wireless on 192.168.1.1. The other uses a dlink router on 192.168.0.1. I have one laptop with two nics, one wireless and one not. The wireless nic connects to the mifi. The Ethernet nic connects to the dlink router. It's ip is 192.168.0.2. I also have a laptop with only one nic connected to the dlink on 192.168.0.3. I want to connect laptop 2 to the Internet. Can I do that by adding an entry to the routing table so that destination 0.0.0.0 routes to 192.168.0.2? If I do that, will laptop 1 "know" that it should route traffic from 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.1.1? Thanks for any assistance.

  • gvim "open in new window" should change directory to the one of the current file

    Hi I'm working in gvim with sessions and tabs, and everything works great. However there is something that is bothering me. Say I have two files open: /A/B/foo.ext and /C/D/E/bar.ext, the latter being opened last. Now say I want to open /A/B/foobar.ext. I have to go through the hassle of navigating upwards to / and from there to /A/B. I would like to simply change my active tab to /A/B/foo.ext and have gvim automatically change its active directory to /A/B/, so that when I want to open /A/B/foobar.ext with /A/B/foo.ext being active, I'm already in the right CWD. This would be very time-saving if you work with two different projects at a time and need to switch back and forth between the two. Is there any such script that does just that? Thanks.

Is it possible to add some text after the contact name when a call is received. I have search the web for something that could do that, and been looking in the API for hours and I cannot find anything, is it possible with reflection of something like that?   • Slowdown upon router/modem setup change

    I’ve been using a Belkin FSD7632-4 modem router to connect to my TalkTalk provided ADSL internet connection for some time and been pretty happy with it. Recently, however, the connection has been failing and I decided to get a ASUS RT-N16 instead, which is also a much more capable router generally. The ASUS RT-N16 doesn’t come with a modem built-in so I purchased as Zoom modem as well. I’ve set them both up and am using them to post this message. But I’m a bit miffed to find that I get a significantly and consistently slower downstream rate from the new configuration than with the old Belkin. Belkin modem router: downstream: 3.45 mbps upstream: 0.73 mbps ASUS router + Zoom modem: downstream: 2.71 mbps upstream: 0.66 mbps Any ideas why this is? The really weird thing about this is that the Zoom supports ADSL2 and ADSL2+ but I don’t think the old Belkin does. At first I thought it might be due to the Zoom modem being limited to PPPoE instead of PPPoA, which my ISP supports, but then I tried using PPPoE with the Belkin and that still gave a high speed. I’m using VC-Mux encapsulation with both. VPI of 0 and VCI of 38.   • Change default profile directory per group

    Is it possible to force windows to create profiles for members of one active directory group in a different folder from members in another active directory group? The school here uses DeepFreeze to protect public computers. In a nutshell, DeepFreeze prevents all changes to a hard drive such that every time you restart the machine the disk is identical to it was at the time you froze it. This is a bit different than restoring to an image, in that it never really wrote changes to disk in a permanent way in the first place. This has a few advantages over images: faster recover times, and it's easy to thaw the machine for a few minutes to perform maintenance such as windows updates (which can even be automated). DeepFreeze also allows you to configure a "thawspace" partition, where changes are persistent across reboots. One of the weaknesses of DeepFreeze is that you end up needing to create a new profile every time you log in, unless your profile existed at the time the machine was frozen. And even then, any changes you make to your profile while working on a frozen machine are lost. As students have frequent legitimate needs to log in to our classroom machines, there is currently a lot of cleanup involved from time to time in removing their old profiles and changes, so I want to extend DeepFreeze to protect our classroom computers as well as public computers. The problem is that faculty have a real need to keep a stateful profile locally on these classroom computers. The solution I would like to use is to configure Windows via group policy (or even manually, if that's the way I'll have to do it) to place profile folders on the thawspace partition, but only for members of the faculty security group. Is this possible?

  • Is it possible to change the default scan folder on an Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card

    By default Eye-Fi cards scan the DCIM folder (and subfolders) used by most digital cameras for new images to upload. Is there a way of changing this to a different folder? In my particular case I'm using a Kodak photo scanner (P461) that uses a PHOTO(N) folder format to store the scanned images, as far as I know the device has no configuration interface to alter this setting so that doesn't seem to be an option. This topic on the Eye-Fi forums is the closest I've come to a solution, but a perfunctory investigation of Disk Probe doesn't make it obvious what needs to be modified on the card.

  • Thunderbird 3: can't change column width?

    I recently installed Thunderbird 3.0.3. Just noticed a suboptimal UI setting: in the upper pane, which lists the e-mails in the current folder, the Date column is about 200px wide. So when I keep the window at 480x600, all I see in a row is: | tree icon | favourites icon | attachment icon | read icon | junk icon | Date and time, followed by 5cm whitespace | ... | P Where "P" is the first letter of the name of the sender. And the "..." is actually shown this way, I have no idea which column it is meant to be. But I don't see neither the sender, nor the message subject, which makes scrolling a folder for a certain mail rather pointless. I see these when I maximize the window, actually the columns are then not only bigger, they are arranged in another sequence. But I feel that holding a mail client permanently maximised at 1600x1200 is a waste of screen real estate. My naive solution attempt was to try to go with the mouse cursor to the right edge of the date column and try to shrink it by moving the cursor left while holding down the left mouse button. Not only is this default behaviour for all resizable columns I've ever encountered in GUIs, the cursor actually turns into a horizontal double-headed arrow. But pulling has no effect at all. I cannot make a wide column narrow, and I cannot make the narrow columns wide. I didn't find anything in the preferences either. So can please somebody explain how to get the columns arranged sensibly? Edit: I found out that I only have the problem when I drag the Thunderbird window to a GridMove screen area. It gets automatically resized, but doesn't notice the resize event or something, so the column width remains the same as under a maximized window. First making the window narrow using the mouse helps with column width, but the width of the mail pane is still too wide (rows don't reflow). Anyway, this seems to be a bug caused by the combination of the two applications and not a configuration problem, so I guess I'll have to live with it.

  • Detailed change history of .NET framework versions?

    I am looking for a detailed change history (including bugfixes) of all .NET framework versions, especially the changes between 2.0 and 3.5 SP1. I know that something like that exists for v2.0 and v1.1, and for v4.0. However, I could not find a history for v3.0 and v3.5/SP1. Background: (slightly edited) We are having issues somewhere between deserialization of some XML data (using XmlReader) and the display of the data in the UI. These problems appear when we use .NET 3.5 SP1, but we did not have them in v2.0. Now, I would like to know if this is related to some change/bugfix in the framework, or if this is related to some other difference. Unfortunately, we do not have the source code of that piece of software, and most of the software is written using native C++/MFC, except for the deserialization part which is .NET.

  • FFMPEG dropping frames while encoding JPEG sequence at color change

    I'm trying to put together a slide show using imagemagick and FFMPEG. I use imagemagick to expand a single photo into 30fps video (imagemagick also handles things like putting some text captions on the frames along the way). When I go to let ffmpeg digest it into a video it clips along nicely on the color parts of the video, but when it gets to a black and white section it reports "frame= 2030 fps=102 q=32766.0 Lsize= 5203kB time=00:01:07.60 bitrate= 630.5kbits/s dup=0 drop=703" and drops every frame of video until it hits something with color. As you can imagine this results in entire photos being removed from the slideshow.
