  We are improving quality of code and trying to develop more unit tests. • How to solve cyclic dependencies in a visitor pattern

  When programming at work we now and then face a problem with visitors and module/project dependencies. Say you have a class A in a module X. And there are subclasses B and C in module Y. That means that module Y is dependent on module X. If we want to implement a visitor pattern to the class hierarchy, thus introducing an interface with the handle Operations and an abstract accept method in A, we get a dependency from module Y to module X, which we cannot allow for architectural reasons. What we do is, use a direct comparison of the types (i.e. instanceof, since we program in Java), which is not satisfying. My question(s) would be: Do you encounter this kind of problem in your daily work (or do we make poor architectural choices) and if so, how is your approach to solve this?

• Strategies for porting application from Win32 API to GTK+

  I have a legacy application written in C, using the raw Win32 API. The general level of abstraction is low and raw dependency on <windows.h> is common. I would like to port this application to GTK+. There are any kind of guidelines or best practices on how to do this? I've previously ported a MFC application to Qt, but the application was very abstracted - it draw it's own set of widgets, for example - and initial porting was very straightforward. I've been thinking at first using Wine to build a native Linux executable and then trying to slowly refactor it into a GTK+ app. Does some one have best practices or previous experiences to share about this?

• Project life cycle management - Maven vs 'manual' approach

  I have a question concerning the life cycle management of a/multiple project(s), more specific to the advantages/disadvantages of using technologies such as Maven. Currently we work in a continuous-integration environment but lots of things still need to be manually performed (dependency management, deploying, setting up documentation, generating stats, ...). My impression is that this approach often leads to errors, miscommunications or things just are forgotten. I know and have used Maven in the past but in smaller environments and I was always really enthusiastic about it. But I was wondering if someone could share some insights, experiences, pros, contras, ... about the use of Maven (or similar technology) in larger environments and for multiple projects. I would like to use the suggestions made here to start the debate about moving to the next level in project management!

• When JDeveloper IDE doesn't render the visual editor

  Though with Oracle JDeveloper 11g the problem of the IDE not rendering JSF pages properly in the visual editor has become rare, there always is a way for the creative to break IDE functionality. A possible reason for the visual editor in JDeveloper to break is a failed dependency reference, which often is in a custom JSF PhaseListener configured in the faces-config.xml file. To avoid this from happening, surround the code in your PhaseListener class with the following statement (for example in the afterPhase method) public void afterPhase(PhaseEvent phaseEvent) {   if(!ADFContext.getCurrent().isDesigntime()){ ... listener code here ... } } The reason why the visual editor in Oracle JDeveloper fails rendering the WYSIWYG view has to do with how the live preview is created. To produce the visual display of a view, JDeveloper actually runs the ADF Faces view in JSF, which then also invokes defined PhaseListeners. With the code above, you check whether the PhaseListener code is executed at runtime or design time.If it is executed in design time, you ignore all calls to external resources that are not available at design time.

  We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start? We haven't started anything yet (on the development side) on this regard, so I want to get other opinion if this is pursuit is worth it or moot.

Analysis: This caused Internet Information Services (IIS) to assume that the worker process had stopped responding. Therefore, IIS terminated the worker process. Solution: 1. Open IIS manager. 2.Click application Pools>>select the application pool associated with the site>>and click Advanced Settings 3. Click Advanced Settings of the application pool and set the Ping Enabled property from True to False. Now, reattach the process from Visual Studio, you should not get the error message. • How can I have a Bluetooth Keyboard Auto-Connect at Startup?

  I have a bluetooth keyboard for my HTPC. I pair it with my computer via bluetooth, and it works fine. However, when I turn off the keyboard or my computer, it has to connect again (which requires me entering a passcode on the computer and keyboard) when I turn them back on. I've looked through many forums and through that I have found that I'm missing some seemingly vital bluetooth files: /etc/default/bluetooth /etc/init.d/bluetooth /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf In the instructions that I've found online so far, I must change certain lines in any of these files. I am unable to, since they do not exist. Am I missing a dependency or something? I've also tried installing Blueman but that didn't help at all. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

How far off do you think all this is? Are these really meaningful units?

• Petstore using Java EE 6 ? Almost!

The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1. • package update in ubuntu on vitual box

  while following one of the tutorials I needed to install a curl package. Here are my system configuration: Virtualbox 4.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on the virtual box. When I try the following: sudo apt-get install curl I see the following errors: [sudo] password for userMe: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package curl is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'curl' has no installation candidate userMe@userMe-ubuntu:~$ When I try the same on a direct installation of ubuntu on a laptop (not a virtual machine) there is no problem. I am assuming this may be because of network settings. Please note that my work PC is in a corporate network and uses auto proxy settings (using a .pac file) for internet access etc. Any help will be appreciated.

"superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED. • Show Ubuntu logo in Byobu (tmux) status bar?

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.

Done E: Unable to locate package g++-4.7 E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'g++-4.7' But I find gcc was there with Ubuntu 14.04 installation itself. How could I install g++ in ubuntu 14.04 and any version of g++ abouve 4.7.2 is fine with me.
