• upgrade from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 failed, now loads "grub rescue"

  I attempted to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 last night. Installation seemed to go fine, and this morning I had a message like "restart now to complete installation". So I restart, get an initial "Loading Operating System ..." message, followed by "error: file not found. Then it kicks into "grub rescue" mode. Previously I have this running as a dual boot (window 7) and I just ran the upgrade to 12.10 via the update manager in ubuntu. Any ideas on what is going on here, or what the error means? I know my way around the command line, but this is above my pay grade. Thanks for any advice.

  I use ubuntu server 10.04 on a fairly good machine, with 2.40 dual-core processor and 2GB RAM. My users login with ssh or samba. I have setup LDAP with PAM to sync user accounts between unix and samba. When I allowed about 90 users to login over ssh at once the server refused login for many users. I am using dropbear as ssh server. Even samba logins failed for many users. I need to allow at least 100 users to login at once. Is there anyway to do this?

• Automating the insertion of credits in video files on Mac OS X

  I have a bunch of video files (mp4). I need to insert some title information at the beginning and some credits at the end. I'm currently using iMovie. Since the title could be extracted from the filename and the credits are always the same, I'm wondering how could I make all this process as automatic as possible. I was thinking about Automator, but I'm open to any other solution. iMovie is the preferred tool so far, but I could use anything else (as far as it doesn't require additional licensing/cost). Any idea?

• How can I fix intermittent iSight camera functionality on a Macbook Pro 5,2?

  I have a Macbook Pro 5,2 laptop dual booting OSX and Ubuntu. The built-in iSight video camera works only sporadically. By that I mean that sometimes if I boot and try to use the camera it does not work (most of the time) but other times it does. I don't have good repeatable data regarding when it does vs. when it doesn't other than to say that it always seems to work right after I upgrade to a new Linux kernel with the Update Manager and reboot, but then eventually stops working again until I upgrade the kernel again. That is hard to test repeatably, so it's hard to know for sure that that is the case. This has happened consistently with every version of Ubuntu from 10.10 through 11.10. I can get around this by booting into the OS/X partition, since all of the hardware obviously works perfectly on that side of things, but it would be great if I could remain in Ubuntu and do the same thing. • Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. • new installation won't sync directories with my account

  I had a dual-boot arrangement on my desktop with 12.04 and 12.10 (testing). Last week, I managed to trash both and ended up re-installing both. After doing all the updates, I activated Ubuntu-one which worked just fine on the previous installations. On both 12.04 and 12.10, the Ubuntu-One window fails to show the folders for syncing and only syncs the Ubuntu-One folder. Adding a folder on my net book on which sync is working properly brings up a pop up on my desktop that tells me a new folder is available for syncing - but the Ubuntu window fails to show it. I have put a screenshot from my net book (working OK) and one from my desktop which shows the problem. Any suggestions please?

• Grub can't find device on boot resulting in Grub Rescue

  So I have 2 hard drives a HDD 320GB and a SSD 20GB. Before I had Windows 7 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD but wanted to get rid of windows and reinstall a clean Ubuntu on the SSD then use the HDD for storage. So I deleted everything from the HDD and set up the SSD with 18GB ext4 and 2GB Swap and installed Ubuntu on the 18GB ext4. Though now when I boot up I get "Error: No such device Grub Rescue" I have a live USB and I ran the Boot Repair following these instructions - grub rescue after install of Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot) - it says successful though still have the same problem. • Mouse Problem on Ubuntu 12.10

  I had a strange mouse problem on Ubuntu 12.10(64-Bit), the problem is that when I turnoff power supply/power goes off, the red laser light of my mouse also goes off and my mouse stops working but it works fine when A/C power supply is on. First I thought my mouse or my laptop's USB ports had problem but since I am using Dual Boot with windows 7, I checked my mouse on windows 7 and it works fine, even I turn off power supply. Today,I thought that I should give a try to Linux Mint 14-RC (which is based on same Ubuntu 12.10) and after installing linux mint when I plugged in my mouse it worked fine even though power is off. Don't know what is really going on, and I am afraid if I reinstall my Ubuntu 12.10 the problem will remain.

  I create a ubuntu 10.10 bootable USB via the method that is described on the download page of ubuntu. I made that from windows and also from ubuntu 10.04 (I have dual boot). When I boot from the USB made, the menu shows and when I run it, it gives a beep and nothing else. It never boots. USB creation from both methods result the same. I downloaded ubuntu via the torrent provided from Ubuntu. Any help will be very appreciated. I want to make my USB just like a Live CD so that I can run it on some other computers also.

• Recovering a deleted partition

  I had a dual boot PC running Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. About a month back, I deleted the Ubuntu partition via the disk management utility (I do not remember whether or not I formatted the partition after performing this action). I ran into some grub issues and used lilo to solve the issue. I followed the simple instructions described in this blog post. I now realize that there were some files in the Ubuntu installation that I need. Of course, I backed up the data, but not this folder apparently. Is there any way to get the data back? I tried following the process suggested on another post on askubuntu (suggesting the use of TestDisk), but was not able to even install TestDisk. The live USB I use is running Ubuntu 12.04 and it does not have a synaptic package manager. Installing from the terminal does not work because even after I type: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade the command: sudo apt-get install testdisk fails to work.

  OK so, here is what I have done: I downloaded the iso "ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64" I used "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.0" to make a bootable USB I restart PC and change the boot option to USB HDD I get the menu to: Boot from USB Install to Hard drive Help etc When I click Boot from USB or Install to hard drive, loads of text flies past and then I get a blank screen and I cant see anything? What can I do so I can see the installation screen? Im using a dual monitor setup from my GFX card and my main display is on my HDMI port to my TV.

  guys i would like to encrypt my windows partition only , as i have dual boot windows 7 ultimate and ubuntu 12.04. I would like to encrypt all my windows partition with truecrypt as i suppose you already now , but i was wondering how will it work ? • No wifi using Ubuntu on laptops

  I have loaded Ubuntu onto two different laptops and both had the same result...no WiFi. I could access the internet if I plugged into Ethernet port but try as I might, I just could not access WiFi. I even tried Wine to install a Windows based external usb WiFi device but again...nothing. It functioned normally in Windows but with Ubuntu installed....nothing and this was the same whether it installed just Ubuntu or dual booted with Windows. Any suggestions? Thx!

• Lexmark X7170 shows documents as printed when they haven't

  I made the move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu not dual booting because I have decided to quit gaming to spare more time for my studies. I just needed an OS for browsing the web and word processing etc. After I installed Ubuntu I installed the AMD GPU drivers, after which I clicked on the little printer icon, selected add printer and it found the drivers for the Lexmark 7000 series and I installed them. Now my problem is when I print something from Writer it processes it thinks its completed it, when in fact it hasn't printed anything. I tried printing a test page but it was stuck on processing for 5 minutes. I have restarted my computer and turned the printer on and off. I'm running 64bit if that changes anything.

  I got a problem. I'm willing to dual boot ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. After i made a bootable USB ubuntu on it i'm going to install it. I boot it and I choose Install ubuntu roughly said. The problem is the following, It seems that when i press enter to start the install he switches of to my intergrated graphic card. I looked up in my bios what my primary graphic card selection is and it was on PCI Express (the option it supossed to be). So I'm clueless right now. • Distributing my Application inside a Debian Virtual Machine Image-- How to meet GPL obligations?

  I have a Linux application I've developed, and I have created a standalone VMWare Image that people can download to try out the application without needing to install and configure a Linux Server. I created this VMWare Image by starting with a base Debian system, installing a bunch of packages and then configuring all the packages and daemons my application depends on. Upon load, the VMWare Image boots right into an X Server running only my application and no Window manager, so its more of a "Virtual Appliance" than a normal Linux Desktop environment. Users generally will never see a command prompt or any application other than my own. (My application itself I have a handle on the licensing issues of) Now I would like to distribute this image, but I'm not sure how to meet my GPL (and other licenses the various Debian components are released under) Obligations. As I understand it, I have two primary obligations to meet. Providing Copyright and License Information for each component I use. As I understand it, all the information I am required to present is located in the /usr/share directory in the Debian, but since my users generally will never touch a console or terminal, they will never see this. Does providing a text file containing a concatenation of all the files inside /usr/share meet this obligation Making source code available for all components I distribute. Since I am not creating the image from source, but from binary packages, I can't provide the actual source code that results in exactly my image being generated. Does providing an ftp mirror and an offer to send that mirror on DVDs of the Debian source debs for all the packages I use meet this obligation? Anything Else I'm required to do to legally distribute this image?

  I'm new in the Ubuntu world. I just bought a Dell Inspiron XPS 14z Ultrabook and installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows thanks to the Ubuntu Secured Remix package. Everything works fine except the battery. I have, at most, 1h 30' battery life. With windows it can last more than 3h. Moreover, and I guess it's related to the battery issues, the fan is constantly running at high speed while it does not when working with windows. Do you know where can be the problem?

• Live CD won't start with UEFI

  I'm trying to dual boot my Windows 8 machine with Ubuntu 12.04 but I cannot even get to the Live CD under UEFI. I've already set my UEFI boot loader to load from the DVD drive before anything else but it keeps on loading Windows 8 first thing. I've checked that the Ubuntu installer I am using is working by setting the BIOS to legacy boot; under this setting, I can get to the Live CD but it cannot detect Windows 8---something I do not want to happen. Just for the record, my boot order is as follows: ATAPI CDROM: HL-DL-ST DVDRAM GT51N USB CDROM: USB FDD USB HDD HDD: TOSHIBA [SERIAL NUMBER] Network Boot-IPV4: Network Boot-IPV6 Windows Boot Manager Has anyone ran into the same problems as me for UEFI? What am I missing here?

• Running projects from NTFS partition on Ubuntu

  I'm dual booting Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04. I want to run C++/Java projects from a NTFS partition, where I keep generally all my files and projects. I fiddled with the fstab. One time I removed 'noexec', the other I changed it to 'exec'. After that,each time, I remounted the partition and it still didn't work. I tried using sudo mount -o remount,exec /media/mypartition It didn't work either. There was a somewhat similar question already, but it didn't have the proper answer for me or I didn't know how to make it work(note: I am a total newbie with Ubuntu and Linux in general).

  Sorry for such a Newbie Question, but I'm looking at installing M3 edition of MapR the requirements are at this link: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Requirements+for+Installation And my question is this, is the Desktop Kernel 64 for 12.04 LTS adequate or the "same" as the Server version of the product? If I'm setting up a lab to attempt to install a home cluster environment should I start with the Server or Dual Boot that distribution? My assumption is that the two are the same. That I can add any additional software to the 64 as needed. Can anyone elaborate on this? Have I missed something obvious?

• Unable to mount location, Can't mount file

  I'm a new user to Ubuntu and I have a problem: I had Windows XP in my computer and I had two partitions: C (for system data) and D(for my personal stuff), then, during the Ubuntu installation I chose the Advanced Settings and formated C partition and left D partition intact, went back and chose Install Ubuntu and replace Windows and it installed fine. The problem is that now I open Nautilus and go to Computer, in there it shows my D partition, 640 Hard Disk, but when I try to mount it displays me a message: "Unable to mount location. Can't mount file". I ask you to explain me step-by-step what I need to do because I'm not an advanced user. My computer specs: 2 GiB RAM, Proccesor Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz × 2, Graphics Unknow (It's Nvidia GeForce 220 {1GB} or something), OS type 32-bit, Disk 628.0 GB P.S.: My HDD is internal, I'm not using external Hard Drives. • Ubuntu 13.10 gets stuck on boot

  I have updated (via the Software Updater) Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10. After it had finished the installation, the system required a reboot. When I reboot and load Ubuntu it will get stuck on the logo. I managed to boot into the recovery (both console and graphics mode) but I can't figure out how to repair it. I have tried a sudo update-grub, but nothing different happened. I have also tried sudo apt-get install gnome, but the same result... I am using a dual-boot Win7 + Ubuntu.
