• Is there a way to hide annotations in Netbeans or Eclipse?

  Maybe a dumb question, but it would be nice if there was a way to hide or collapse Java annotations when viewing source in Netbeans (or Eclipse). I'm not finding an option and a quick search didn't turn anything up. Is this one of those "you should never want to do that, code folding is a sin!" things? Personally I'd find it useful for annotated entity classes. All the hibernate / etc annotations are just fluff that I never look at once my mapping is working fine. It's similar to imports, really. (Yes, I can use XML instead of annotations, which I might start doing. But I was just wondering...)

• Headless build of eclipse features - PDE Tools or Buckminster?

  I am trying to set up a headless build for a big eclipse feature, containing other features and plugins. As some needed plugins are generated using GMF and EMF, the build workflow must be something like this: SVN Check-out Invoke Generation Run Tests Build all Publish update-site Over the last couple of weeks, i played around with PDE Headless Build and Buckminster. Anyhow i still got problems with both and can't decide on which i should spent my effort. So what would you prefer? What experience you made? Anybody out there who needed to set up a similiar workflow before? Thank you for all answers :)

• Authenticate native mobile app using a REST API

  I'm starting a new project soon, which is targeting mobile application for all major mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Windows). It will be a client-server architecture. The app is both informational and transactional. For the transactional part, they're required to have an account and log in before a transaction can be made. I'm new to mobile development, so I don't know how the authentication part is done on these platforms. The clients will communicate with the server through a REST API. Will be using HTTPS ofcourse. I haven't yet decided if I want the user to log in when they open the app, or only when they perform a transaction. I got the following questions: 1) Like the Facebook application, you only enter your credentials when you open the application for the first time. After that, you're automatically signed in every time you open the app. How does one accomplish this? Just simply by encrypting and storing the credentials on the device and sending them every time the app starts? 2) Do I need to authenticate the user for each (transactional) request made to the REST API or use a token based approach? Please feel free to suggest other ways for authentication. Thanks!

• What do angle brackets around an eclipse perspective mean?

  I wrote a new perspective for our Eclipse RCP Project. The perspective worked fine, but because of a malconfiguration I had to revert to an earlier code-version in which this perspective didn't exist yet. The strange thing is it still gets shown in the "open perspective" Dialog. The only difference is, that it is now in angle brackets and appears two times. What do the angle brackets mean? (unresolved title perhaps?) And how can I get rid of these entries? Thanks a lot!

• Is there a way put a timestamp in the file header automatically when saving in Eclipse?

  I am a PHP developer using Eclipse PDT. I would like a timestamp put automatically in my file headers whenever I save the file. Maybe as a replacement of a variable. Let's say I use this header in a file: /** * ${filename} * ${timestamp} */ When I save the file I would this to be replaced with: /** * Myfile.php * 4/20/2010 19:04 */ It would also be ok if there is a macro that would add a line at the very beginning of the file just containing a timestamp. • How to ignore the .classpath for Eclipse projects using Mercurial?

  I'm trying to share a repository between my Mac (laptop) and PC (desktop). There are some external dependencies for the project that are stored on different places on each machine, and noted in the .classpath file in the Eclipse project. When the project changes are shared, the dependencies break. I'm trying to figure out how to keep this from happening. I've tried using .hgignore with the following settings, among others, without success: syntax: glob *.classpath Based on this question, it appears that the .hgignore file will not allow Mercurial to ignore files that are also committed to the repository. Is there another way around this? Other ways to configure the project to make it work?

• How to get back to auto-completion after misspelling of a methodname in Eclipse?

  When I am coding Java in Eclipse I like the auto-completion feature. With that I mean the popup with method-names that comes when you start typing in a method name for an object. Or maybe it's called something different, i.e. method-suggestions? But the popup is hidden if I misspells a method name, and it doesn't come back if I delete the misspelled part of the method name. Is there any way to get back the popup after a misspelling without starting to type in the hole methodname again?

  I want to create a web app that will use wicket, hibernate and spring frameworks. My IDE of choice is Eclipse, I am using maven for the .war generation and I am running Mac OS. What steps should I follow to correctly install and configure all the tools so as to have a project running that relies on these 3 frameworks. I was able to successfully set up wicket but I am having trouble for setting up hibernate and spring. I went through multiple tutorials but I still couldn't find the solution. Thanks!

• Can I configure Eclipse / JBoss integration so it does not rely on deploying Jars to the "server/def

  I am using MyEclipse 7.5 with JBoss 4.2.3 GA. When I define my local development JBoss server in MyEclipse it always wants to deploy jars, wars etc. to the "server/default/deploy" directory. Unfortunately our JBoss directory structure for production is "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" (driven by a third party). As a result our Dev JBoss instances are different from our QA/Staging/Production JBoss instances. Is there a way to configure Eclipse to use JBoss but deploy to that specific folder path "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" rather than the default one "server/default/deploy"?

When selecting a folder, I want an editor to open showing all files and subfolders that this folder contains. It has to work for versioned items, too. So I have to create the content of the editor within my plugin (no backing IResource). What I currently have Right now I'm opening a RemoteFileEditorInput for a versioned file (subclipse) or I'm using IWorkbenchPage.openEditor() for a FileEditorInput. • How do I convince Eclipse to show javadoc documentation under Ubuntu 9.04 for openjdk?

  I'm having a pretty hard time with this! I have installed the java documentation at: file:///usr/share/doc/openjdk-6-jre/api/index.html And loading that file up does show me all the documentation. However, I would like to browse it directly from within eclipse and see the documentation when I hover over a class. For example, when I hover over "javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest", I would like to see the documentation for it. All I get is: Note: This element has no attached source and the Javadoc could not be found in the attached Javadoc. Can anyone help correct my dev environment?

• Is the development stack of java/spring/hibernate/eclipse/tomcat/mysql riddled with config hacking?

  From a M$ development perspective, using things like vs.net/c#/asp.net/asp.net mvc/sql server, things are pretty much smooth. (Obviously for someone coming from a microsoft background like me). Now I love the idea of open source, linux and terminal servering into the computer and doing things via the command line, no license issues really, etc. I've tried firing up eclipse etc., but I always seem to get stuck on some configuration issue or another. Does it get easier or is it just the territory when you are dealing with the java stack?

  Hi, I making a eclipse view that is working with selected elements from other views. Let say I have opened a java file in the editor that has the following fields in it: private String world = " world!" private String hello = "hello" + world; When I select "hello" in the Outline view I'm able to get IFiled selection and I have access to it's properties, but what i need is the true value of the field ("hello world!").   Hello, I've been using Eclipse for some time already, and I didn't have any problems with it. However, when I tried to generate some javadoc, I found that I didn't have the SDK installed. I installed jdk 6u23, and from then on, Eclipse hasn't been working. At first it told me it couldn't find a JRE/SDK. After copying and placing the JRE in the Eclipse folder, the error changed to this: http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh261/magical_7/Eclipse.png I've searched around for some solutions, and found a few of varying nature. However, none of them seemed to work. I've tried emptying my eclipse.ini file without success. Altering some values in eclipse.ini didn't work either. Installing Java SDK 1.5 didn't work. Does anyone have other possible solutions? Update: I tried reinstalling Eclipse, but it didn't fix the problem. I did notice that it's a 32bit version, while I'm running a 64bit system. However, if this were to be the problem, I find it strange that it hasn't been an issue earlier.

• What are the potential problems with exposing the Facebook API secret?

  I'm writing a little web utility that posts status updates to Twitter and/or Facebook. That involved creating 'applications' with both those services in order to get API keys and 'secrets'. My question is how protected I really need to keep those secrets -- in order for this to work at all, you seem to need the secret to interact with the authentication part of the service to grant the app access to your account and/or grant it permission to post updates on your behalf. Facebook's documentation says to protect the secret, but at least one other Facebook utility distributes the API key and secret in the source. It's important to note: this isn't your standard Facebook 'application' that runs within the context of Facebook, nor is it a standard "desktop"-style compiled app -- it's a web-based application intended to be run on your own web server. The audience for this is probably small and somewhat more sophisticated than average -- so, one technical alternative would be to require people to obtain their own API key and secret to use the app. That seems like a lot of work, however, and a fairly large barrier to entry to anybody using this. Anybody know or have any insight on what sort of trouble I'm letting myself in for if I put both the secrets and the API keys in the config for my app and check it into Github for all the world to see?

• Perform SilkTest actions on an Eclipse that's always already open?

  I want to be able to recognize the Eclipse window, which is always already open, so I won't ever need to open it with SilkTest. Is there a way that I can set the base state to be a window that's always going to be open? It seems the way to set the base state also designates the executable for it to open. The executable won't necessarily always be in the same location, and it would be a pain to configure that. Is this possible? I've already tried desktop.<Window>find("//Window[@caption='Java EE*']");, which doesn't work.

• Building a jar to be used in an eclipse PDE?

  I have written an application that use a third party library. I have then packaged this as an executable jar using the maven-assembly-plugin (producing a jar with all dependencies including some of the third-party jars). Next I need to add this jar to a PDE project so it can be launched from eclipse. But to make this work I need to add some of the thirs-party dependencies to my PDE project which is already located in the packaged jar. So I get duplicated dependencies. Any ideas on how to avoid this? Or suggestion to documentation that describes how this is done properly?
