• Recommendations for stable, reliable flash drives

  We're looking to purchase some flash drives for use in some embedded devices. Most of our requirements aren't too different the generic "good, fast" flash drive: reliability is very important, speed is good, and so that the drive will fit, the case shouldn't be too large (so no OCZ Throttles). Consistency is also a major priority; we'd like to be able to buy more or less the same product a year or two from now without having to worry about the manufacturer swapping drive components with less reliable or slower parts. (We've been burned already by our previous manufacturer doing this.) Any recommendations, especially regarding consistency? I can read Ars Technica to get an overview of current models, but what are consistently good models?

  I have a VPS hosting with a VZFS file system. How can I determine maximum file size of VZFS partition? UPD: Free space (or total space) is not what i need. Sometimes file cannot occupy a hole partition volume - fat16 with 2Gb limit is a good example. I need to use a large database file (say, 64Gb) and so I need to know if a file system of VPS hosting will cope with it. It is easy to calculate for an ext3 filesystem using tune2fs, but VPS uses VSFS by Virtuozzo, and it is documented bad. Is it any generic way to calculate maximum file size for some filesystem in linux?

• How to create reusable fields in Word

  I would like to create reusable fields that I can type in, then reuse those fields throughout the document without having to retype them. As an example, I have a cover sheet that contains "Title", "Document ID", "Version Number", and "Published Date". I used the MACROBUTTON trick to create a field that someone can just click on and type, but I don't see how I can re-use what is typed in other parts of the document (such as putting the Document title in the header). I've found something called "fill-in" fields, which don't seem to be what i'm looking for, and "ASK" fields, but that creates a dialog that you have to enter the information into. I'm trying to create a generic template for my documentation needs. Can anyone suggest a method to do what I am looking for?

In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients?   Over the past few months, my Windows XP machine has slowed down to a crawl. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go from power-up to reaching a responsive state. • My windows xp wireless hotspot isn't working

  I add the hotspot the regular way. Yet it doesn't show up as available when I try to connect to it using my other Ubuntu laptop. And nothing can connect to it. Yesterday, I successfully made it work for 5 minutes and then it stopped without me changing any configuration. I've already tryed resetting the DNS. Edit: I've updated my Broadcom 802.11b/g driver to a generic but more recent version. I've also repaired the WMI, now the advanced tab of my primary connection is available and the hand meaning the connection is shared appeared. But the computers still connect the wrong way around. (Windows to ubuntu instead of ubuntu to windows) Reinstalled SP3...

  Hello, I recently bought a new VGA cable . When connected Windows 7 detects my monitor as a generic plug and play monitor. The resolution goes bad with the screen blurred. This problem disappears when i connect my original VGA cable. Also Windows 7 detects my LG monitor correctly in this case.   hi all - a bit of clumsy situation but for the moment we cannot migrate to more straight-forward project layout. We have a project called myServices and it has 2 source folders (yes, I know, but that's the way it is for now) - I'm trying to make build process a bit more flexible so we now have a property called artifact.names that will be parsed by generic build.xml and based on name, it will call either jar or war task, eg. myService-war will create a WAR file with the following zipfilesets included there: myService-war-classes, myService-war-web-inf, myService-war-meta-inf. I want to add a bit more flexibility, and allow having additional zipfilesets, eg. myService-war-etc-1,2 etc - so these will be picked up by the package target automatically. I cannot use "if" inside war target, and also ${ant.refid:myService-war-classes} property is not resolved, so I'm kind of stuck at the moment with my options - how do I dynamically include a zipfileset into a WAR? You can refer to fileset by id, but it MUST be defined then, eg. you can't have it optional on project level. Thank you.   I'm trying to block everyone but 1 IP address from my site on a server running apache & centos. My setup is follows the example below. My server: `http://www.myserver.com/` My .htaccess file <limit GET> order deny,allow deny from all allow from 176.219.192.141 </limit> ErrorDocument 403 http://www.google.com ErrorDocument 404 http://www.google.com When I visit http://www.myserver.com/ from an invalid IP, it gives me a generic 403 error. When I visit http://www.myserver.com/page-does-not-exist/ it redirects me correctly to http://www.google.com but I can't figure out why the 403 error doesn't redirect me too. Anyone have any ideas?

He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. What files I have to copy to backup mail and adders book from Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail? Is it any good program for doing it automatically (for Linux or Windows)? • Alternatives to the ClickToPlugin Safari extension for Chrome users

  I have been using Safari with ClickToPlugin and was wondering if there was anything similar for Chrome. I am looking for both the click-through to plugin functionality as well as the HTML5 video replacements. I've done some looking around the Chrome extensions page and found some specific extensions to help with forcing the HTML5 on YouTube or to block Flash but none seem offer the generic functionality (click-through works for any given plugin) and flexibility that ClickToPlugin does (ClickToPlugin has HTML5 video replacements for a plethora of websites). I am looking to mimic the aforementioned features in Chrome, but they don't necessarily have to be provided by one single extension.

• After virus, Chrome & Internet Explorer won't connect to the internet, but Firefox works fine.

  I cannot connect to the internet with Chrome or Internet Explorer. Firefox works fine. It seems it happens when I was infected by a "Trojan Horse Generic 17.BWIK", "Trojan Horse SHeur.UHL" and "Fake_Antispyware.FAH". I have removed the threats using AVG anti-virus security. I got Firefox working, but Chrome and IE still cannot connect. I do not want to loose Chrome History so re-setting would be my last option and uninstall and install will be out of the question. Is there a way around this? I am using XP Pro on a desktop and DSL connection.

• Configuring Nagios BGP plugin on Ubuntu

  I am trying to configure nagios check_bgp_neighbors plug-in on Ubuntu and followed README file of check_bgp_neighbors plug-in. I have made following changes: define command{ command_name check_bgp_all command_line $USER1$/check_bgp_neighbors -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -C $USER3$ -n $ARG1$ -n $ARG2$ } to define command{ command_name check_bgp_all command_line /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_bgp_neighbors.sh -H xx.xx.xx.49 -C xx.xx.xx.50 And define service{ use server-service hostgroup_name svc-bgp1 service_description BGP Check 1 check_command check_bgp_all!10.0.0.1!172.16.0.2 } to define service{ use generic-service hostgroup_name svc-bgp1 service_description BGP Check 1 check_command check_bgp_all!xx.xx.xx.50 } xx.xx.xx.49 is the IP of the host router and xx.xx.xx.50 is the IP of eBGP neighbour. After that it shows critical status. I know my command is not correct but cannot detect the problem. I learned that in this plug-in user-name and password of the host router are required but don't know how and where to provide it. Nagios log does not show any error message. • Why are my USB 2.0 devices crashing Windows XP?

  Background on the machine I'm having a problem with: The machine was inherited and appears to be circa 2003 (there's a date stamp on the power supply which leads me to this conclusion). I've got it set up as a Skype terminal for my 2 year old to keep in touch with her grandparents and other members of the family - which everyone loves. It has a generic ATX motherboard with no identifying markings other than one stamp that says "Rev.B". CPU-Z identifies the motherboard model as VT8601 but doesn't provide me with any manufacturer name. On board it has 1 x 10/100 LAN, 2 x USB 1.0, VGA, PS/2 for KB and mouse, parallel port, 2 x serial ports, 2 x IDE, 1 x floppy, 2 x SDRAM slots, 1 x CPU housing that is seating a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 3 x PCI, 1 x AGP - although you can only use 2 of the PCI slots if you use the AGP slot due to the physical layout of the board. It's got 768Mb PC133 SDRAM - 1 x 512Mb & 1 x 256Mb installed as well as a D-LINK WDA-2320 54G Wi-Fi network card and a generic USB 2.0 expansion board containing 3 x external + 1 x internal USB connectors. It has a DVD+/-RW running as master on IDE1 and a 1.44Mb 3.5" floppy drive connected to the floppy connector. It has an 80Gb Western Digital hard drive running as master on IDE0. All this is sitting in a slimline case. I don't know the wattage of the PSU, but can post this later if this proves to be helpful. The motherboard is running a version of Award BIOS for which I don't have the version number to hand but can again post this later if it would be helpful. The hard disk is freshly formatted and built with Windows XP Professional/Service Pack 3 and is up to date with all current patches. In addition to Windows XP, the only other software it's running is Skype 4.1 (4.2 hangs the whole machine as soon as it starts up, requiring a hard boot to recover). It's got a Daytek MV150 15" touch screen hooked up to the on board VGA and COM1 sockets with the most current drivers from the Daytek website and the most current version of ELO-Touchsystems drivers for the touch component. The webcam is a Logitech Webcam C200 with the latest drivers from the Logitech website. The problem: If I hook any devices to the USB 2.0 sockets, it hangs the whole machine and I have to hard boot it to get it back up. If I have any devices attached to the USB 2.0 sockets when I boot up, it hangs before Windows gets to the login prompt and I have to hard boot it to recover. Workarounds found: I can plug the same devices into the on board USB 1.0 sockets and everything works fine, albeit at reduced performance. I've tried 3 different kinds of USB thumb drives, 3 different makes/models of webcams and my iPhone all with the same effect. They're recognized and don't hang the machine when I hook them to the USB 1.0 but if I hook them to the USB 2.0 ports, the machine hangs within a couple of seconds of recognizing the devices were connected. Attempted solutions: I've seen suggestions that this could be a power problem - that the PSU just doesn't have the wattage to drive these ports. While I'm doubtful this is the problem [after all the motherboard has the same standard connector regardless of the PSU wattage], I tried disabling all the on board devices that I'm not using - on board LAN, the second COM port, the AGP connector etc. through the BIOS in what I'm sure is a futile attempt to reduce the power consumption... I also modified the ACPI and power management settings. It didn't have any noticeable affect, although it didn't do any harm either. Could the wattage of the PSU really cause this problem? If it can, is there anything I need to be aware of when replacing it or do I just need to make sure it's got a higher wattage than the current one? My interpretation was that the wattage only affected the number of drives you could hook up to the power connectors, is that right? I've installed the USB card in another machine and it works without issue, so it's not a problem with the USB card itself, and Windows says the card is installed and working correctly... right up until I connect a device to it. The only thing I haven't done which I only just thought of while writing this essay is trying the USB 2.0 card in a different PCI slot, or re-ordering the wi-fi and USB cards in the slots... although I'm not sure if this will make any difference - does anyone have any experience that would suggest this might work? Other thoughts/questions: Perhaps this is an incompatibility between the USB 2.0 card and the BIOS, would re-flashing the BIOS with a newer version help? Do I need to be able to identify the manufacturer of the motherboard in order to be able to find a BIOS edition specific for this motherboard or will any version of Award BIOS function in its place? Question: Does anyone have any ideas that could help me get my USB 2.0 devices hooked up to this machine?

• Different graphic cards drivers while booting from external media

  I am booting a certain system of mine with ubuntu 9.10 from external HDD. I am satisfied with the setup and it works fine, however I would like to modify it so that I can choose which graphic card drivers to load during the boot time. Specifically I would like to choose between: nvidia proprietary driver ati proprietary driver generic driver Currently if I am using proprietary drivers then dont boot into X, delete xorg.conf, start gdm and reconfigure the system using jockey (for hardware drivers). What would be the steps to make this (semi-)automatic and avoid restarting X?

• tmux: unbind C-[ as a prefix

  I have a fairly straight forward .tmux.conf file which does nothing more but to define a couple of options, such as history-limit. I have not added any custom key bindings yet. I find it extremely annoying that I cannot unbind C-[ as a prefix in tmux. I thought it might be a terminal or shell issue, but confirmed same behaviour on a configless machine using Bash and [Gnome] Terminal. So the question really is, how do I unbind the C-[ key from tmux? ** I have base-index 1 set.

  Hello, Ubuntu 9.10 2.6.31-20-generic I am trying to install some software. When I do the ./configure. I get the following error: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.2) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation! So I install the following package thinking this would solve the problem. sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev I was thinking that the libqt4-dev would install the headers and libraries. • Jumbo Frames on DIR-655

  Hello, I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• Solaris x86: Non working keys on keyboard (<, >, #, |)

  Hello everyone, I have a new installation of Solaris 10 10/09 on x86 hardware. The attached keyboard has a normal German layout. The system is configured accordingly by 'kbd -s'. The generic keys (letter, number, umlaut) work fine. Unfortunately some keys like <, , | or # do not. They produce no output on the text console at all. I tried PS/2 and USB keyboards. I cannot test it under X11 as it is currently not working. Thanks.
