But the first step of selecting the entire line is not working:- F5:: send {Shift Home} return I have tried few others too, but its not working. This is not sending Shift+Home combination on pressing F5 key. Please tell me what's wrong with this?   • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard: Locks MS Office files, but not Adobe .AI and .PSD files?

    We have some shares setup on a Windows 2003 R2 server, and the MS Office files people save behave properly: The first person to open the file gets read/write, and the second person to open the file while the first person still has the file open, gets a read-only version. This is not true for the graphics files, like Adobe Illustrator .AI files, and Photoshop .PSD files. Anyone who goes to open these files has full read/write, even if someone else is already working on the file! This has lead to numerous file corruption issues, as well as other lost work, since it always saves the last changes to the file. How do we get Windows to properly lock these files so when someone is working on a file, and someone else wants to open one, they get read-only access? Many thanks, Bruce

  • Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

    Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps.     Assume an office of people, they want to limit HTTP downloads to a max of 40% bandwidth of their internet connection speed so that it doesn't block other traffic. We say "it's not supported in your firewall", and they say the inevitable line "we used to be able to do it with our Netgear/DLink/DrayTek". Thinking about it, a download is like this: HTTP GET request Server sends file data as TCP packets Client acknowledges receipt of TCP packets Repeat until download finished. The speed is determined by how fast the server sends data to you, and how fast you acknowledge it. So, to limit download speed, you have two choices: 1) Instruct the server to send data to you more slowly - and I don't think there's any protocol feature to request that in TCP or HTTP. 2) Acknowledge packets more slowly by limiting your upload speed, and also ruin your upload speed. How do devices do this limiting? Is there a standard way?

  • How to make outlook.com/Office 365 use plain text and/or conventional quotes?

    I am forced to use the web version of Outlook at Office 365. I really dislike how it formats e-mail as well as how it handles quoting when replying. In the desktop version of Outlook you can at least force it too display the messages in plain text and then you can manually bottom post/post interleaved. Plain text also changes how it handles quotes: " " is used rather than some braindead RTF version of format=flowed (I like format=flowed when it is implemented without bugs) although the attribution line is completely useless but in the online version I can't find a way to achieve even this. Any ideas? I guess a Greasemonkey script could do this?

  • What is the cleanest way to upgrade Fedora and also my individual installs while keeping /home?

    I am a professional programmer, using Fedora 10 (and a host of other packages individually installed). I use my system to telecommute. Every year or so, I go through the ritual dance, usually with a second computer and a KVM switch as I don't have office space for two monitors, to build the next version of Fedora and install all my favorite apps. Is there a better way? At least a nice way to keep track of what I need to 'add on' so that I don't have to manually install my app collection? Also, I keep /home on a separate raid-ed drive set so I can also fall prey to 'old-config-file-itis'.

    This is something new. I had been able to copy text and pictures from websites into a microsoft word office starter 2010. I have gone into advanced settings to no avail. I have verified that under paste special html is selected. I have reviewed the help sections and questions and they all tell me to select html under paste special but again it isn't working either. Also I used to have 3 formatting options under paste and am now only having two options. I did have a problem with my computer last night and I am wondering if something re-set itself..will you help?

  • What is a good layout for a somewhat advanced home network and storage solution?

    My home network/storage needs are changing and I am searching for some opinions and starting points on what a good network/storage layout would be that can serve my needs for a few years into the future. I think I have a decent starting point for equipment, but I am also willing to invest fairly heavily in a solution that can last me for a while. I am a bit of a tech nerd and I have a moderate tolerance for setup of the solution. I would prefer if maintenance of the system is somewhat low once it is setup, but I am willing to accept some tradeoffs. Existing equipment: Router - Netgear WNDR3700 (gigabit) Router - DLink Gamerlounge DGL-4300 (gigabit) Switch - 16 port Trendnet green switch (gigabit) Switch - 5 port Trendnet green (gigabit) Computer - i7-950 office computer (gigabit ethernet) Computer - Q6600 quad core media center, hooked up to TV, records shows (gigabit ethernet) Computer - Acer 1810T ultraportable laptop (gigabit and N ethernet) NAS - Intel SS4200-E (gigabit) External hard drive - 2TB WD Green drive (esata) All kinds of miscellaneous network connected TV, Bluray, Verizon network extender, HDhomerun TV tuners, etc. Requirements: -Robust backup solution for a growing collection of huge family picture files and personal files, around 1.5TB. (Including offsite backup) -Central location for all user's files, while also keeping them secure from each other. -Storage for terabytes of movie backups and recorded TV, and access to them from all computers (maybe around 4TB eventually) -Possibility to host files to friends and family easily Nice to have: -Backup of terabytes of movie backups Intriguing possibilities: -Capability to have users' Windows desktops and files look the same from all network computers I am not sure if the new Windows Home Server 2011 would fit into this well, if I need a domain server, how best to organize my backups, or how to most effectively use RAID. Currently I am simply backing up all computers to a RAID 1 on the NAS box, which I was thinking could prevent a situation where I reach for a backup and find that the disk is corrupt. One possibility that I am thinking about now is simply using my media center PC with a huge RAID of hard drives on which all files are stored. Pseudo-backup of all files would be present because of the RAID, but important files would also be backed up off site via carrying hard drives to work. But what if corruption seeps into the files and the corrupted data is then backed up? Does RAID protect against this? I really want to take next to zero risks with the irreplaceable files. I can handle some degree of risk with the movies and other files. I'm looking for critiques on this idea as well as other possibilities. To summarize, my goal is high functionality, media capable, and robust backup of irreplaceable files.

  • SSH is not working .. Password promt is not coming

    I am not able to SSH into my ubuntu server since yesterday. I am not using any keyless or public key method.. Its simple SSH with username and password everytime.. However I can do a VNC session running on my ubuntu server.. But I am afraid that if the vnc session goes out, I wont be having any way to login to the server..   • What are some of the best wireless routers for a price-conscious home power-user?

    I'm extremely dissatisfied with the 'popular' choice for routers in homes and small offices. They are expensive (upwards of 60$), lack a great deal of useful configuration options, and seem to need to be restarted quite often. (Linksys comes to mind). I've been on the market for a good router lately, and slowly collecting a set of requirements I feel good routers should meet. Maximum number of TCP/IP connections. - This isn't something I see any routers advertise, but in terms of supporting torrent applications, I've been screwed by routers that support less than 20 here. From what I understand a fairly standard number is 200, but there are not so expensive routers that support thousands. Router configuration menu - Most have standard menu's that let you set up basic things like your wireless network encryption settings, uPnP, and maybe even DMZ (demilitarized zones). An absolute requirement for me, however, are routers with good enough firmware to support: Explicit Port forwarding Assigning static local ips to specific mac addresses, or at least Port forwarding by MAC address Port, IP and MAC filtering Dynamic DNS service for home users who want to set up a server but have a dynamic IP Traffic shaping (ideally) - giving priority to packets from certain machines or over certain ports. Strong wireless signal - If getting a reliable signal requires me to be so close to the router that I can connect an Ethernet cable, it's not good enough. As many Ethernet ports as possible. - Because I want to be able to switch from console gaming to PC gaming without visiting my router. So far, the best thing I've stumbled upon (in the bargain bin at staples) was a 20$ retail plus router. It was meant to be the cheapest alternative until I could find something better to purchase online, but I was actually blown away by the firmware capabilities. It supports defining reserved bandwidth for certain network traffic, dynamic DNS, reserving local IPs for specific MAC addresses, etc. At 2 am when my roommate is killing our Internet with their torrents, I can limit their bandwidth without outright blacklisting them. I have, however, met serious limitations when it comes to network traffic between local machines. It claims a 300Mbps connection, but I have trouble streaming videos from my PC to my console or other laptops wirelessly. It has a meltdown and needs to be reset once in a while (no more than a couple times a month), and it's got a 200 connection limit. There 4 Ethernet ports in the back but I'm pretty sure the first doesn't work. So some great answers to this question would be: Any metrics you use to compare routers, and requirements you have for new candidates. The best routers you've found for supporting home servers, file management systems, high volume torrent traffic, good price/feature ratio, etc. Good configuration advice (aside from 'use Ethernet whenever possible') Thanks for your feedback and experiences!

    Today in IIS I came into my server and all of my drive letters were changed from D: to E:? Hacked I guess? Anyone ever have this happen to them? Windows 2003 Server, only 2 drives in the Machine C:, D:. I have not touched the machine and the Drive Letter itself did not change just the setting in IIS for site Home Directory that point to it. IE: D:\websites\mywebsite.com was changed to E:\websites\mywebsite.com

    I need to connect to a VPS and I'm running Vista Home Basic. TightVNC and TeamViewer both require access to the VPS first, because they require that the server be set up with TightVNC or TeamViewer. Is there anything similar to Remote Desktop that will allow me to use the IP address and administrator password to the VPS to simply connect, rather than having to have the hosting company set up VNC or TeamViewer on the server first?
