• DBA Command line options

  There are a number of database utilities supplied with the installation of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products. These are typically run in interactive mode where the utility prompts you for the values and then executes the required functionality. Did you know that the utilities also have command line options that allow you to run the utility in silent mode as well? You can assess the command line options by specifying the -h option on the command line. Here is an example of the oragensec command line options: oragensec -d <Owner,OwnerPswd,DbName> -u <Database Users> -r <ReadRole,UserRole> -l <logfile> -h where: -d <Owner,OwnerPswd,DbName> Database connect information for the target database. e.g. spladm,spladm,DB200ODB. -u <Database Users> A comma-separated list of database users where synonyms need to be created. e.g. spluser, splread -r <ReadRole,UserRole> Optional. Names of database roles with read and read-write privileges. Default roles are SPL_READ, SPL_USER. e.g. spl_read,spl_user -l <logfile> Optional. Name of the log file. -h Help The command line options allow the DBA to automate the exeucution either via a script or some utility can than execute utilities. • NAT: Exposing SQL Server 2008 Express to the internet

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 machine with SQL Server 2008 Express installed. I have my network configured with a NAT. Internal clients can access the instance of SQL Server without a problem. I would like to enable SQL Server to be accessible from anywhere on the the internet. I am not sure how to allow my NAT firewall to allow that. I tried adding the port 1443 to it but I still can't access it from a remote machine. How can you make a given SQL Server available to the WAN? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

• Best way to implement user-powered data validation

  I run a product recommendation engine and I'm hitting a few snags. I'm looking to see if anyone has any recommendations on what I should do to minimize these issues. Here's how the site works: Users come to the site and are presented with product recommendations based on some criteria. If a user knows of a product that is not in our system, they can add it by providing the product name and manufacturer. We take that information, and: Hit one API to gather all the product meta-data (and to validate the product spelling, etc). If the product is not in this first API, we do not allow it in our system. Use the information from step 1 to hit another API for pricing information (gathered from many places online). For the sake of discussion, assume that I am searching both APIs in the most efficient/successful manner possible. For the most part, this works very well. I'd say ~80% of our data is perfectly accurate, but there are a few issues: Sometimes the pricing API (Step 2) doesn't have any information for the product. The way the pricing API is built, it will always return something (theoretically, the closest possible match), and there's no guarantee that the product name is spelled exactly the same way in both APIs, so there's no automated way of knowing if it's the right product. When the pricing API finds the right product, occasionally it has outdated, or even invalid pricing data (e.g. if it screen-scraped the wrong price from a website). Since the site was fairly small at first, I was able to manually verify every product that was added to the website. However, the site has grown to the point where this is taking several hours per day, and is just not efficient use of my time. So, my question is: Aside from hiring someone (or getting an intern) to validate all the data manually, what would be the best system of letting my userbase self-manage the data. Specifically, how can I allow users to edit the data while minimizing the risk of someone ambushing my website, or accidentally setting the data incorrectly.

  Possible Duplicate: How can I allow one user to su to another without allowing root access? We have a user account that our DBAs use (oracle). I do not want to set a password on this account and want to only allow users in the dba group to su - oracle. How can I accomplish this? I was thinking of just giving them sudo access to the su - oracle command. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a more polished/elegant/secure way.

• IIS 7.5 FTPS external access - 534 Policy requires SSL

  I have setup a FTP site that requires SSL but when I try connect to it externally I get the error: 220 Microsoft FTP Service 534 Policy requires SSL. I know - I set it so! Why doesnt it fetch the SSL cert from the site and allow me to logon?! (Incidentally beware of all the tutorials that Allow but do not Require SSL - while that will solve the problem it will be because SSL is not being used!). I suspect it may be I need a client that supports FTPS (FTP over SSL) and Windows explorer just uses IE which does not. But trying FileZilla and WinSCP I get a little further but then it hangs on TLS/SSL negotiation expecting a response from the server.... UPDATE: I have tried (from: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/309/configuring-ftp-firewall-settings/): Configure the Passive Port Range for the FTP Service. Configure the external IPv4 Address for a Specific FTP Site. Configure the firewall to allow the FTP service to listen on all ports that it opens. Disabling stateful FTP filtering so that Windows Firewall will not block FTP traffic. And still I get (in FileZilla trying both Active and Passive): Status: Connecting to 203.x.x.x:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Response: 220 Microsoft FTP Service Command: AUTH TLS Response: 234 AUTH command ok. Expecting TLS Negotiation. Status: Initializing TLS... Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server The Windows firewall logs unhelpfully have nothing to say.. UPDATE2: Turning the firewall off does not resolve the problem. I cannot believe how difficult it is to get something so simple to work and even once following the documentation it does not work. UPDATE3: Running FileZilla locally connecting through the loopback works in Active mode, in Passive mode I get up to: Command: LIST Response: 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection. Error: GnuTLS error -53: Error in the push function. Turning the firewall off at both ends I can still not connect the client and get the same error as above.

  I administer a production server for a .com. It is live right now. Server 2008 x64 IIS 7 SQL 2008 PHP MYSQL I have another server which is a DC Server 2003 x86 and a warm standby for the website, sql, DFS, exchange queue. In order to get DFS going to transfer user photos and other content I need it in the domain. My question is, What preparations do I need to do to the production server to allow a smooth transition onto the domain? Things such as permissions for the website. I do not want to be running around resetting all the permissions. The Group Policy on the DC is completely default. Should I add the DNS manually or allow it to add itself? Anything else I left out.

• JMX Based Monitoring - Part One

  In all versions of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework there is an ability to use Java Management eXtensions (JMX) to both manage and monitor the various components of the product. This means that sites can use a JSR120 compliant JMX browser or JMX console to view or manage the components of the product with little or no configuration required. In each version we have progressively added JMX capabilities to allow IT groups more detailed information. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.1 and above it was possible to use JMX on the Web Application Server provided Mbeans to allow you to monitor the online component of the product as well as manage the configuration. Also with a few additional java options it is possible to get a good level of detail about the Java Virtual machine including memory and thread usage. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 and above, we added support for Java 5 statistics (Java enabled them by default), database pool statistics and also added the ability to manage and moinitor the batch component of the architecture. Now, in Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4 and above, we added support for Java 6 MXBeans, online management of the cache using JMX, additional JVM information and Performance monitoring using JMX. JMX allows the product to be managed from a common console such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Tivoli, HP OpenView (and a lot more). Over the next week or so I will be compiling a set of blog entries discussing what is available (in summary format) using JMX and how to get access to the JMX statistics for your version of the product.

• Why don't I have write permission to my vmware virtual network device?

  I want to allow my VMWare machine to force the virtual network it's on into promiscuous mode so I can play around with honeyd. I received an error message that told me to go to http://vmware.com/info?id=161 to allow this behavior. Based on their advice, I did: $ groupadd promiscuous $ cat /etc/group | grep promiscuous promiscuous:x:1002:robert $ usermod -a -G promiscuous robert $ id robert uid=1000(robert) gid=1000(robert) groups=1000(robert),....,1002(promiscuous) $ chgrp newgroup /dev/vmnet8 $ chmod g+rw /dev/vmnet8 $ ls -l /dev/vmnet8 crw-rw---- 1 root promiscuous 119, 8 2012-03-29 10:29 /dev/vmnet8 Looks like I gave RW permission to the promiscuous group, and added myself. Except that VMWare still gives me an error message that says I cannot enter promiscuous mode. To try out the group thing, I tried: $ echo "1" >/dev/vmnet8 bash: /dev/vmnet8: Permission denied That really surprised me: It makes me think that I still haven't properly given myself the correct permissions... What am I missing?

• Configure mod_wsgi WSGIScriptAlias with mod_rewrite

  I want to redirect ex.com to www.ex.com but I still want www.ex.com/ to point to my app.wsgi without it showing up in the url. When I use the conf below and I go to ex.com, I get a 404 error saying can't find www.ex.com/app.wsgi/ If I change the WSGIScriptAlias / /var/www/vhosts/ex/app.wsgi to WSGIScriptAlias /app.wsgi /var/www/vhosts/ex/app.wsgi Then all my url look like www.ex.com/app.wsgi/blabla/... • Running a reverse proxy in front of Splunk 4.x

  So, I have previously installed Splunk 3.x behind a reverse proxy and downloaded the latest version (4.0.6 at time of typing) expecting it to be as easy to use as before. Sadly this was not the case. There appears to be some elements which are not being translated correctly through the reverse proxy, causing Splunk to fail. • Phpmyadmin Not Working

  I recently installed phpmyadmin onto ubuntu server 10.04 using sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin The installation went fine and everything was working including phpmyadmin. I then performed a restart of the server and now apache2 starts up but when I navigate to http://192.168.1.72/phpmyadmin/ I am getting a 403 error.   I have a apache server that I'm trying to use for proxy access my activeMQ admin page. I am able to load the inital landing page properly, but I can't seem to load any of the sub-pages (Queues, Connections, etc.). My proxypass rules on the apache server are the following: ProxyPass /foo http://10.5.124.108:8161/admin ProxyPassReverse /foo http://10.5.124.108:8161/admin The activeMQ installation included a activemq-httpd.conf file in /etc/httpd/conf.d/. Proxy connections there are enabled: ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all Order allow,deny </Proxy> ProxyPass /admin http://localhost:8161/admin ProxyPassReverse /admin http://localhost:8161/admin ProxyPass /message http://localhost:8161/admin/send ProxyPassReverse /message http://localhost:8161/admin/send From what I've read the proxypass rules should be recursive (the rule for /foo should also work for /foo/bar). Is there something else that I'm missing here that's preventing me from accessing pages beyond the initial admin landing page?

• Cannot change port 25 to port 587

  I am using outlook 2003. My email provider is Cox. Trying to change my out going port to 587 so I send mail while traveling. Others I know on Cox have done this with succes, but they are using newer version of outlook. When I go to change my existing email accounts, outlook will not allow me to change the settings. I can delete 25, but it will not allow me to type in 587. What am I doing wrong?

• Segmentation Fault (11) with modwsgi on CentOS 5.7 when running pyramid app

  I'm getting Segmentation fault error when trying to access the "Hello World" pyramid app. This error only occurs when running against CentOS 5.7 setup, but no problem whatsoever when tested against OSX and Arch Linux. Could it be a CentOS specific issue? [error] [client 10.211.55.2] Premature end of script headers: pyramid.wsgi [notice] child pid 31212 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I have tried to follow the troubleshooting guides posted here http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/InstallationIssues which suggests that it might caused by missing Shared Library. A quick check reveals that shared library is not the issue. • Trying to configure domain-based access via htaccess file.

  I've created an account with no-ip.com that registers my ip with a subdomain of their service. When I do an nslookup, I see that the service is working and that my domain is being shown. Now I want to provide access to that subdomain on the admin site of our server which is protected by htaccess IP restrictions. When I try to add the new domain to my script it does not work. Am I doing something wrong? • Clickonce applications being allowed through firewall

  The company I work for uses an application that is deployed through clickonce. This means that everytime they update said program the program regenerates in a new location ie: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\89XCT43D.10T\WBZ8WE7L.927\trm8..tion_1ad39bb503bcb5df_0008.0005_14829906c9aa8611\%appname%.exe Recently the computers were updated to windows 7 machines and now everytime an update is pushed out the windows firewall see this as a new application and prompts the users to allow the program through the firewall. THis means I have to walk around to every computer and type in admin credentials. Does anyone know of a way to allow the application regardless of the path it is in? Google has not been very helpful so far.

  If you want to run a 64 bit virtual machine on a 32 bit host you have two options 1. VMWare Server (or a Workstation version that supports 64bit guests) 2. Sun Virtual box Though 64 bit guests on 32 bit hosts is possible, it requires that you are running x64 (not ia64) hardware. All the new Intel processors are 64 bit compatible (if you have T5200/T550 on your laptop, you are out of luck) VMWare has a free tool you can download to check whether your machine can run 64bit guests. Microsoft Vitual PC and Microsoft Windows Virtual PC do not support 64 bit guests. Also Hyper-V will run only on a 64 bit host.   Is is possible to export existing wordpress post to windows live writer? I have to edit some post and I need to make use of the code snippet plugin that is only available on live writer. There is actually a feature which allows me to do that. But it only allows 1 post at a time. And every time I go to this screen, it always fetches the blog post from wordpress again. Which makes it very slow. What I need is something that will allow me to cache the posts retrieved to make it faster. Or something that will allow me to export wordpress post into live writer documents

• Set up iis7.5 to deny connections outside of LAN for certain folder

  Im setting up a combined website and extranet currently, they both read from the same database on the same server as the site is hosted on. The reason being that the website is fed from the data that the staff plug into the extranet interface. it also links in to AD for authorising access to the extranet. I have the extranet in a folder within the website folder. What I want to do is only allow the extranet to be accessed from computers within our LAN, but allow the main website to be freely accessible to internet users. I have it set up as a generic web server currently, so anyone can view anything (well up to the point where the user is asked to log into the extranet of course! I have read a lot on this but nothing I read applies to, or works in IIS7.5
