  • What javascript min tool does jquery use?

    - by JDS
I have a great deal of javascript that needs to be min'd before being served to the end user. Currently, I'm using JSMIN, but I'd like to switch to something a bit more powerful (such as something with local variable replacement). I'm currently looking at YUI min developed by yahoo, and it got me thinking about the min tool that jquery uses. Does anyone know what it is and if it's publicly available? Also, any recommendations on other min tools that might be better suited than YUI min? If possible, I'd like a java solution so I can just plug the library into what I've already created for the JSMIN solution. Thanks

  • Dynamically loading CSS and JavaScript using Prototype

    - by Salman A
I have a classic ASP application that I've been constantly trying to modularize. Currently, almost all pages are divided in to two pages: an outer page that contains the layout, header, sidebar, footer an inner page that contains ASP code The outer pages use dreamweaver templates so updating layout and replicating changes is easy. The inner pages are managed by me. Now here is the problem: I had to add a lightbox to one page, I chose Lightbox 2 which requires Prototype. I ended up adding Prototype on every page, assuming that sooner or later I'll upgrade all pages, forms, ajax requests and other javascript to use Prototype. I've now added two other plugins -- Modalbox and Protofade; each with a pair of .JS and .CSS files. Since I'll be using these three plugins on specific set of pages I am wondering if I can load the required CSS and JS files dynamically. I do not want to access the document head and add include files there, I'll have to do this from inside a DIV where all ASP code is supposed to go.

  • JavaScript Metaprogramming: Reduce boilerplate of adding functions to a function queue

    - by thurn
I'm working with animation in JavaScript, and I have a bunch of functions you can call to add things to the animation queue. Basically, all of these functions look like this: function foo(arg1, arg2) { _eventQueue.push(function() { // actual logic } } I'm wondering now if it would be possible to cut down on this boilerplate a little bit, though, so I don't need that extra "_eventQueue" line in the function body dozens of times. Would it be possible, for example, to make a helper function which takes an arbitrary function as an argument and returns a new function which is augmented to be automatically added to the event queue? The only problem is that I need to find a way to maintain access to the function's original arguments in this process, which is... complicated.

  • Graph visualization code in javascript?

    - by Chris Farmer
Hi. I have a data structure that represents a directed graph, and I want to render that dynamically on an HTML page. Does anyone know of any javascript code that can do a reasonable job with graph layout? These graphs will usually be just a few nodes, maybe ten at the very upper end, so my guess is that performance isn't going to be a big deal. Ideally, I'd like to be able to hook it in with jQuery so that users can tweak the layout manually by dragging the nodes around. Edit: Google's Visualization API seems to be more "graphs as charts" oriented than "graphs as nodes" oriented. I didn't see any node-oriented visualizations already built there, anyway. Do you know that one exists?

  • Download estimator control using JavaScript and Ajax

    - by Anil Namde
I would like to implement the download estimator using the JavaScript and the Ajax. I have gone trough Google to find the existing implementations for the download estimator and i found most of the time asking user bandwidth and then calculating the number is strategy. It good approach and there is hardly anything on reliable to get the estimated time right. What i would like to try is use Ajax to request file size 100KB - 200 KB and do the maths get the number and update the display. Now this is surrounded with so many questions like network, number of packets formed, proxies etc ? These all factors are sufficient to turn down the approach. But THIS IS HOW I HAVE TO DO THIS ? Now i would like here inputs from you all to make it better (as good discussion)? what all can be added to this ? Can we get to know bandwidth user using without asking ?

  • JavaScript distributed computing project

    - by Ben L.
I made a website that does absolutely nothing, and I've proven to myself that people like to stay there - I've already logged 11+ hours worth of cumulative time on the page. My question is whether it would be possible (or practical) to use the website as a distributed computing site. My first impulse was to find out if there were any JavaScript distributed computing projects already active, so that I could put a piece of code on the page and be done. Unfortunately, all I could find was a big list of websites that thought it might be a cool idea. I'm thinking that I might want to start with something like integer factorization - in this case, RSA numbers. It would be easy for the server to check if an answer was correct (simply test for modulus equals zero), and also easy to implement. Is my idea feasible? Is there already a project out there that I can use?

  • Javascript top banner control [closed]

    - by Mike Pateras
Possible Duplicates: How to show popup message like in stackoverflow Header message just like at Stack Overflow How to display a message on screen without refreshing like SO does? I'm looking for something like StackOverflow's banner that pops up (or rather drops down) from the top of the screen when you have a new alert. Preferably some javascript widget, though I'd be open to anything that will work with an ASP.Net MVC2 web page. All I'm looking for is a simple top-banner alert/message that looks good, preferably with a cancel button. Is there something like that, freely available?

  • Hard-coded 8191 10485 values in JavaScript rounding function

    - by Matthew Hegarty
    I've seen the following (bizarre) Javascript rounding function in some legacy code. After googling for it I can see that it crops up in a number of places online. However I can't work out why the hard-coded values 8191 and 10485 are present. Does anyone know if there's any sensible reason why these values are included? If not, hopefully we can kill off the meme! function roundNumber(num,dec) { var newnumber = 0; if (num > 8191 && num < 10485) { num = num-5000; newnumber = Math.round(num*Math.pow(10,dec))/Math.pow(10,dec); newnumber = newnumber+5000; } else { newnumber = Math.round(num*Math.pow(10,dec))/Math.pow(10,dec); } return newnumber; }

  • ASP.NET Web User Control with Javascript used multiple times on a page - How to make javascript func

    - by Jason Summers
I think I summed up the question in the title. Here is some further elaboration... I have a web user control that is used in multiple places, sometimes more than once on a given page. The web user control has a specific set of JavaScript functions (mostly jQuery code) that are containted within *.js files and automatically inserted into page headers. However, when I want to use the control more than once on a page, the *.js files are included 'n' number of times and, rightly so, the browser gets confused as to which control it's meant to be executing which function on. What do I need to do in order to resolve this problem? I've been staring at this all day and I'm at a loss. All comments greatly appreciated. Jason

The newGame, startLevel, and update functions should be your // first priority since they're all involved in displaying the initial state // of the game board. // // Next, work on putting together the control panel for the game so that you // can begin to interact with it. Your next goal should be to get the move // function working so that everything else can be testable. Note that all nine // of the movement buttons (including the pass button) should call the move // function when they are clicked, just with different parameters. // // All the remaining functions can be completed in pretty much any order, and // you'll see the game gradually improve as you write the functions. // // Just remember to keep your cool when writing this program. There are a // bunch of functions to write, but as long as you stay focused on the function // you're writing, each individual part is not that hard. // These variables specify the number of rows and columns in the game board. // Use these variables instead of hard coding the number of rows and columns // in your loops, etc. // i.e. Write: // for(i = 0; i < NUM_ROWS; i++) ... // not: // for(i = 0; i < 15; i++) ... var NUM_ROWS = 15; var NUM_COLS = 25; // Scene is arguably the most important variable in this whole program. It // should be set up as a two-dimensional array (with NUM_ROWS rows and // NUM_COLS columns). This represents the game board, with the scene[i][j] // representing what's in row i, column j. In particular, the entries should // be: // // "." for empty space // "R" for a robot // "S" for a scrap pile // "H" for the hero var scene; // These variables represent the row and column of the hero's location, // respectively. These are more of a conveniece so you don't have to search // for the "H" in the scene array when you need to know where the hero is. var heroRow; var heroCol; // These variables keep track of various aspects of the gameplay. // score is just the number of robots destroyed. // screwdrivers is the number of sonic screwdriver charges left. // fastTeleports is the number of fast teleports remaining. // level is the current level number. // Be sure to reset all of these when a new game starts, and update them at the // appropriate times. var score; var screwdrivers; var fastTeleports; var level; // This function should use a sonic screwdriver if there are still charges // left. The sonic screwdriver turns any robot that is in one of the eight // squares immediately adjacent to the hero into scrap. If there are no charges // left, then this function should instead pop up a dialog box with the message // "Out of sonic screwdrivers!". As with any function that alters the game's // state, this function should call the update function when it has finished. // // Your "Sonic Screwdriver" button should call this function directly. function screwdriver() { // WRITE THIS FUNCTION } // This function should move the hero to a randomly selected location if there // are still fast teleports left. This function MUST NOT move the hero on to // a square that is already occupied by a robot or a scrap pile, although it // can move the hero next to a robot. The number of fast teleports should also // be decreased by one. If there are no fast teleports left, this function // should just pop up a message box saying so. As with any function that alters // the game's state, this function should call the update function when it has // finished. // // HINT: Have a loop that keeps trying random spots until a valid one is found. // HINT: Use the validPosition function to tell if a spot is valid // // Your "Fast Teleport" button s

  • Should I unit test my JavaScript?

    - by Joseph Silvashy
I'm curious to if it would be valuable, I'd like to start using QUnit, but I really don't know where to get started. Actually I'm not going to lie, I'm new to testing in general, not just with JS. I'm hoping to get some tips to how I would start using unit testing with an app that already has a large amount of JavaScript (ok so about 500 lines, not huge, be enough to make me wonder if I have regression that goes unnoticed). How would you recommend getting started and Where would I write my tests? (for example its rails app, where is a logical place to have my JS tests, it would be cool if they could go in the /test directory but it's outside the public directory and thus not possible... err is it?)

  • Using JavaScript eval to parse JSON

    - by Quandary
    Question: I'm using eval to parse a JSON return value from one of my WebMethods. I prefer not to add jquery-json because the transfer volume is already quite large. So I parse the JSON return value with eval. Now rumors go that this is insecure. Why ? Nobody can modify the JSOn return value unless they hack my server, in which case I would have a much larger problem anyway. And if they do it locally, JavaScript only executes in their browser. So I fail to see where the problem is. Can anybody shed some light on this, using this concrete example? function OnWebMethodSucceeded(JSONstrWebMethodReturnValue) { var result=eval('(' + JSONstrWebMethodReturnValue + ')') ... // Adding result.xy to a table }

  • Double-Escaped Unicode Javascript Issue

    - by Jeffrey Winter
I am having a problem displaying a Javascript string with embedded Unicode character escape sequences (\uXXXX) where the initial "\" character is itself escaped as "&#92;" What do I need to do to transform the string so that it properly evaluates the escape sequences and produces output with the correct Unicode character? For example, I am dealing with input such as: "this is a &#92;u201ctest&#92;u201d"; attempting to decode the "&#92;" using a regex expression, e.g.: var out = text.replace('/&#92;/g','\'); results in the output text: "this is a \u201ctest\u201d"; that is, the Unicode escape sequences are displayed as actual escape sequences, not the double quote characters I would like.

  • Identifying an empty text node with jQuery + Javascript

    - by b. e. hollenbeck
You'd think this was easy - but I'm having the hardest time with it. Here's what I'm trying to identify: <span class="cw-value-one"></span> Here's what I'm using so far: $('span.cw-value-one').each(function(){ var textNode = $(this).text(); var type = typeof textNode; var len = textNode.length; if($(this).is(':empty')){ $(this).siblings('span.cw-value-two').css({"position": "relative", "left": "1em"}); } }); Ok, so textNode = "", type = string and len = 1 - none of which is helpful in identifying an empty text node, since a has a type of string and length of 1. The jQuery .is(':empty') is not working either. So whow do you identify an empty text node in JQuery or plain ol' Javascript?

  • Facebook Connect via Javascript doesn't close and doesn't pass session id

    - by ensnare
I'm trying to authenticate users via Facebook Connect using a custom Javascript button: <form> <input type="button" value="Connect with Facebook" onclick="window.open('http://www.facebook.com/login.php?api_key=XXXXX&extern=1&fbconnect=1&req_perms=publish_stream,email&return_session=0&v=1.0&next=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com%2Fxd_receiver.htm&fb_connect=1&cancel_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com%2Fregister%2Fcancel', '_blank', 'top=442,width=480,height=460,resizable=yes', true)" onlogin='window.location="/register/step2"' /> </form> I am able to authenticate users. However after authentication, the popup window just stays open and the main window is not directed anywhere. In fact, it is the popup window that goes to "/register/step2" How can I get the login window to close as expected, and to pass the facebook session id to /register/step2? Thanks!

  • how to get the top left coordinates of the screen with javascript on firefox

    - by artsince
I have a <div> element with position: absolute and z-index something big. I would like to cover the entire screen with this div with javascript. This is what I do and it works: document.getElementById('mydiv').style.top = 0; document.getElementById('mydiv').style.left = 0; document.getElementById('mydiv').style.width = '100%'; document.getElementById('mydiv').style.height = '100%'; However, when I scroll down with long webpages, this code displays my div at the top of the page, so the div renders above the region I currently view. How can I change the top and left values so that my div always covers the active field I am viewing? I work on firefox 3.6.*. Thank you

  • Currency Math in JavaScript

    - by Jared
Can someone please help me out with a JavaScript/jQuery solution for this arithmetic problem: I need to subtract one number from the other. The problem is that the numbers have a dollar sign (because its money), therefore jQuery is treating them as strings instead of numbers. I have created two variables - toalAssets and totalLiabilites. I would like to subtract the latter from the former and place the result into another variable called netWorth. Perhaps i need to use parseFloat()? But I'm not sure how - This is all a little over my head!

  • Print out PDF with javascript [closed]

    - by Daniel Abrahamsson
I have a need to print out multiple PDFs with the help of javascript. Is this even possible without rendering each PDF in a separate window and calling window.print()? Basically, I would like to be able to do something like print('my_pdf_url'). Edit After some searching, I have come to the conclusion that there are no other methods than the one I've described above. It is a far from perfect solution, but it works in simple cases. Edit I ended up merging the PDFs to a monster PDF on the server side and then send this single PDF to the user, who can then choose to print it out.

  • How to debug CSS/Javascript hover issues

    - by Jason Creighton
I often find myself wanting to debug CSS layout issues that involve DOM changes caused by Javascript in reaction to a hover event or different CSS rules applying due to the :hover selector. Normally, I'd use Firebug to inspect the element that's giving me trouble and see what its CSS properties were, and where those properties come from. However, when hovering is involved, it becomes impossible, because as soon as you move your mouse down to the Firebug panel, the elements you're interested in are no longer hovered, the CSS rules that apply are different, and (in the case of JS hovers) the DOM is changed. Is there any way I can "freeze" the state of the DOM and application of :hover in order to inspect the DOM as it was during a hover event? Any other ideas on how to debug this sort of issue are welcome, of course.
