• Is it possible to use JavaScript to break the HTML of a page?

  I've been asked at work whether it is possible to write, on purpose or by accident, JavaScript that will remove specific characters from a HTML document and thus break the HTML. An example would be adding some JavaScript that removes the < symbol in the page. I've tried searching online and I know JavaScript can replace strings, but my knowledge of the language is negligible. I've been asked to look into it as a way of hopefully addressing why a site I work on needs to have controls over who can add bespoke functionality to the page. I'm hoping it's not possible but would be grateful for the peace of mind!

• c# Delegates, Events and Lambda Expr for new students

  I've been asked by my pointy haired boss to educate our new co-ops (interns) in the ways of C#. I have roughly ~30mins to cover the topics of Delegates, Events and Lambda Expressions. The time restriction is rather tight and the topics are broad. Since I'm not a C# guru, I would like some hints and pointers. Since my time is short, what points should I cover with respect to the three topics listed above? What are some good Do's and Dont's when using those three things? I might have time for a short Lambda Expr demo. What is the most common use of LExpr (probably a Select().Where() statement on an enumerable??) that I could demo? Thanks. EDIT: The students have working knowledge of C++ and Java.

• C# Dynamic Query Without A Database Model

  I have been searching the web for a solution to dynamic queries. I have found many different solutions (e.g. Linq to Sql, Dynamic Linq Expressions, Dynamic Query), but all of these solutions involve some sort of previous knowledge of the database (like a model in code). Maybe what I am asking is way off the deep end, but is there any possible way to dynamically query a database without a model? For example, a database has a Customers table with the following columns: CustomerID Name FavoriteColor I want to create a query as SELECT Name FROM Customers WHERE @0 = @1, where the two placeholders are populated dynamically. The resulting data does not tie to a model class and I would prefer to use some sort of framework to build the queries, not simple string concatenation. The System.Linq.Dynamic namespace came really close to fulfilling this request, but it uses a database model. I realize this is crazy, but I was just curious.

• Why is there no Microsoft Certified Master program targetted at developers?

  In the lower level certifications, developer technology is all over the place. At the highest level (Microsoft Certified Architect), the Solutions track appears to be a good fit for high level application designers and architects. MCA requires an MCM as a prerequisite. However, none of the MCM tracks are targeted towards development. Obviously to be a good architect you need to have knowledge of other technologies, servers, sql, messaging etc. But those seem like things that should be part of the course load, and not the sole focus. Are the lower tiers really as high as you can go for application focused professionals? For most developers, the SQL MCM seems to be the best fit. Are the MCM and MCA really targeted ad more administrators and not developers?

  I've inherited a project (without a handy handover) that contains reports published to a Reporting Server (2005). MY SSRS knowledge is 4 years stale, so I need your help. I need to edit one of the published reports, is this possible? I also want to peek into the Data Source on the RS, coz that's probably where I can change stuff. I'll add more info as I get a better understanding of what exactly to ask. EDIT: I found a project for some of the reports, opened up in VS2005 BI. Still, how do see where the Data Source gets its data? It brins back 56 fields but I dont know which tables/stored procs/queries are used to get these.

The iframe page has a form in it and a textbox in it. The Iframe is actually created by another jquery function and is inside a div.   During a code review I presented a method quickly to the team that I had made static and one person agreed that there was no reason for it to not be static and a person disagreed saying that he would not make it static because it wasn't necessary and just to be on the safe side for future modifications and testing. So I did quite a bit of research and obviously it's a specialized case but I would like to know what you would do in this situation and why? • Commercial CMS on Google App Engine, violation of terms?

  I'm developing commercial CMS running on Google App Engine. I'm thinking of selling it in two ways: 1) Software as a service (SaS). The CMS running in my App Engine account (as single app), hosting the sites of all customers. A turn-key solution for "end user" customers. 2) Licence for running the CMS in customer's own App Engine account. Targeted for digital agencies for reselling as SaS. Being not a lawyer myself, I don't trust my abilities to read between the lines of TOS jargon. Counting on the general knowledge of SO community, my question is: do the above scenarios violate the App Engine Terms of Service?

• Find value within a range in lookup table

  I have the simplest problem to implement, but so far I have not been able to get my head around a solution in Python. I have built a table that looks similar to this one: 501 - ASIA 1262 - EUROPE 3389 - LATAM 5409 - US I will test a certain value to see if it falls within these ranges, 389 -> ASIA, 1300 -> LATAM, 5400 -> US. A value greater than 5409 should not return a lookup value. I normally have a one to one match, and would implement a dictionary for the lookup. But in this case I have to consider these ranges, and I am not seeing my way out of the problem. Maybe without providing the whole solution, could you provide some comments that would help me look in the right direction? It is very similar to a vlookup in a spreadsheet. I would describe my Python knowledge as somewhere in between basic to intermediate. Many thanks in advance.

  Hi everyone, We're in the middle of making a new e-commerce related PHP application and we have come to the point where we have started to think about how we should solve templating for our customers needs. What we would like to do is offer our customers the possibility of uploading/modifying templates to suit their company:s profile. The initial thought is that we shall not reinvent the wheel, so instead letting our customers upload their templates with FTP, so there will be basic HTML skills required. For those customers that want to modify/customize template and doesnt have the knowledge, we offer that service as well. I know that there's a number of issues to solve before this could be considered safe, like preventing XSS and writing scripts that check through each uploaded file for potential security threats and so on. Of course, there are some part that probably will be to complex for the customer to modify by themselves, so maybe this approach won't apply to all<< template files in the frontend application. But besides that, what would be a good way to handle this?

• Can I use a single MySQL query to select distinct rows and then non-distinct rows if a limit hasn't

  I hope I'm explaining this properly, my knowledge of MySQL is quite limited. Let's say I have a table with rows that have name and shape fields. I'd like to select a bunch of rows from a table, but return all of the rows with unique shape field values first. If I have less than a certain number of rows, let's say 7, then I'd like to fill the remaining result rows with non-unique shape rows. The best way I can word it is that they're "ordered by uniqueness, and then by some other value". So, I don't want: square, square, circle, circle, rectangle, square, triangle I'd like to have: square, circle, rectangle, triangle, square, square, circle Is this possible to do using a single SQL query? I'm using MySQL with PHP, if that makes any difference. Thanks!

• text watermark on website? how to do it?

  I am a C++/C# developer and never spent time working on web pages. I would like to put text (randomly and diagonally perhaps) in large letters across the background of some pages. I want to be able to read the foreground text and also be able to read the "watermark". I understand that is probably more of a function of color selection. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to do what I want. I would imagine this to be very simple for someone with the web design tools or html knowledge. Any links or sample code? Thanks

  Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? Should I try to avoid using jQuery(document).ready()? in case of jQuery framework? Above some of the questions which I know and please answer the questions which I couldn't ask because of lesser knowledge about these. • Does anybody have practice in programming PCMEF - architectures?

  PCMEF is an architecture style presented in the book Practical Software Engineering by Maciaszek and Liong. The layers are: P: Presentation C: Controller M: Mediator E: Entity F: Foundation. It is some kind of enchancement compared with MVC - architecture. I recommend it to interactice, data and communicating - oriented purposes. I have programmed it using Visual Prolog. Foundation in my applications is the data model (domains) for the application. PCMEF is like a simulated computer: Presentation is the display, Controller the user interface and event handling, Mediator the internal logic and data highway. Entity is the database or external interfaces and F defines the knowledge. This is a really nice small architecture. Does any other have experiance of it?

  I just started using IBM Worklight 5.0. I have been going through the HTTP Adapters recently and have successfully been able to Run as "Invoke Worklight Procedure". But I am stuck with the Adapter execution in the App. To my knowledge I think this is some kind of security issue where the client request to Worklight Server is unauthorized (401). Can any tell me or refer to some blog/website where there are steps to overcome this problem? I already got some of the websites but at this moment I am really confused on how to use them.

• Improving MySQL Update Query Efficiency

  In our database tables we keep a number of counting columns to help reduce the number of simple lookup queries. For example, in our users table we have columns for the number of reviews written, photos uploaded, friends, followers, etc. To help make sure these stay in sync we have a script that runs periodically to check and update these counting columns. The problem is that now that our database has grown significantly the queries we have been using are taking forever to run since they are totally inefficient. I would appreciate someone with more MySQL knowledge than myself to recommend how we can improve it's efficiency: update users set photos=(select count(*) from photos where photos.status="A" AND photos.user_id=users.id) where users.status="A"; If this were a select statement I would just use a join but I'm not sure if that is possible with update.   Hi, My manager in my current company feels that I am selling myself short by getting another job - but as a senior. He feels I have sold myself short and missing out on a good salary by getting another junior job, given how he (my manager) has a lot of faith in my development skills. However, I have not worked long enough for a proper senior job (5 years +) but then the senior developer we do have in my current company isn't given senior tasks (judged by difficulty). • Creating a User Registration Page using MongoEngine

  I am currently working an a webapp, using mongoengine and django, which will require users to create an account from a registration page. I know MongoEngine has an authentication backend, but does it also include a registration form, etc..., like django itself does? If not, are there any example projects which show how to implement this? The only open-source mongoengine project I've found is django-mumblr, but I can't find the examples I want in it. I'm not interested in alternative options, such as MongoKit or mango for handling authentication. I am just getting started with django and mongoDB, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. • How to delay shutdown of an application when user logs off or shuts down Windows?

  I am writing an application that runs in the background from startup to shutdown, and in some circumstances I need the application to display a dialogue for the user to choose whether or not to continue shutting down. This application will only be running on Windows, but may be running on any version from 2000 onward. • Are frameworks really necessary for beginners/intermediates? (PHP)

  I have been programming for around 6months and currently learning PHP/Mysql. I can create basic functionally sites starting from a plain sheet of paper. Is it necessary I use frameworks to create sites? Currently, everything I do is from scratch. I'll borrow codes from old codes, ask people for help, etc. Are frameworks going to help me much more? Is it alright if I put a site public without using a framework? (I have not looked a lot into frameworks, so my knowledge is limited, but I'm just curious)
