• Reading ASCII numbers using "D" instead of "E" for scientific notation using C

  Hello, I have a list of numbers which looks like this: 1.234D+1 or 1.234D-02. I want to read the file using C. The function atof will merely ignore the D and translate only the mantissa. The function fscanf will not accept the format '%10.6e' because it expects an E instead of a D in the exponent. When I ran into this problem in Python, I have up and merely used a string substitution before converting from string to float. But in C, I am sure there must be another way. So, how would you read a file with numbers using D instead of E for scientific notation? Notice that I do not mean how to read the strings themselves, but rather how to convert them to floats. • Using a UIPickerView to make a CoreData Relationship

  Okay, so I have a fairly simple application set up. I have two different CoreData Entities, Games and Platforms, each have one attribute: name, and they have a one-to-many relationship between them. Platforms are populated on the first launch of the application, and will never change as a result of user input. I'm working on my Add view to let the user add new games to their personal database, and each game should select from a platform. The add view itself is a grouped table view with static custom cells. Tapping the platform cell should advance the user to another view to select the platform. My thought is that UIPickerView seems like a logical choice for the control, since the Platform list is static, but I'm not sure how to use it with CoreData. Even if I construct a fetch request to get the Platform objects and extract the strings out, how do I go about linking the new Game object to the original Platform object?

• Retrieve a facebook page's type

  I am trying to display a list of pages similar to the facebook search results. Along with the page's name, I would like to display the page type. The page's type property (from the Pages.getInfo API call returns the rather unfriendly looking strings from this list: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Page_Types Is there any way to map these to or retrieve the actual type descriptions facebook uses for page types in the facebook search results? These are not only more presentable, but appear to be less granular (both good things for my purpose).

• Validation of user input or ?????????

  We're letting users search a database from a single text input and I'm having difficulties in filtering some user supplied strings. For example, if the user submits: ????????? lcd SONY (Note the ?'s) I need to cancel the search. I include the base64 encoded version of the above string wrapped up so that its easy run: print(base64_decode("1MfLxc/RwdPHIGxjZCBTT05Z")); I've ignored such inputs before but now (am not sure why) just realised the mysql database query is taking nearly forever to execute so this is now on high priority. Another example to highlight that we are using utf-8 and mb_detect_encoding is not helping much: print(base64_decode("zqDOm8+Fzr3PhM63z4HOuc6/IM+Bzr/Phc+HzyU=")); ????t???? ?????% So: how can I detect/filter these inputs? how is this input being generated?

  Consider a JavaScript method that needs to check whether a given string is in all uppercase letters. The input strings are people's names. • How to check if an apply-template filled variable is a string or (possibly) empty node in XSLT?

  I need a test which would evaluate to true in two cases: There is a string inside which contains any non white space characters There is any node (which can be possibly empty) on a variable that is filled with apply-template call result. I tried test="normalize-space($var)" but this doesn't cover the empty tag possibility. I also tried simply this: test="$var" but this evaluate to true even for white space only strings. By the way "$var/*" produces an error "Expression ...something I don't remember... node-set" which is I think because of apply-template variable instantiation. Is there any (which means even multi level decision) solution for this? EDIT: I forgot to say that it's for XSLT 1.0 and preferably without any exslt extensions or similar.

Any ideas? Update I like the idea of adding the comma by checking if the container is empty, but doesn't that mean more processing as it needs to check the length of the string on each occurrence?

• Reading string value from Excel with HSSF but it's double

  Hi, I'm using HSSF-POI for reading excel data. The problem is I have values in a cell that look like a number but really are strings. If I look at the format cell in Excel, it says the type is "text". Still the HSSF Cell thinks it's numeric. How can I get the value as a string? If I try to use cell.getRichStringValue, I get exception; if cell.toString, it's not the exact same value as in Excel sheet. Thanks! edit: until this gets resolved, I'll use new BigDecimal(cell.getNumericCellValue()).toString()

• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

  I'm using minidom to parse through an xml document. I took the data with yum tags and stored them in a list and calculated the frequency of the words. However, its not storing or reading them as strings in the list. Is there another way to do it?   Hi, I have the following class: public class Item { public Dictionary<string, string> Data { get; set; } } and a list of it: List<Item> items; I need to filter and order this list dynamicly using SQL-Like strings. The catch is, that I need to order it by the Data dictionary. For example: Order By Data["lastname"] or Where Data["Name"].StartsWith("a"). I thought to use the dynamic linq library, but is there any way that my clients can write without the Data[]? For example: Name.StartsWith("abc") instead of Data["Name"].StartsWith("abc") ?   I am using Unity with MVC and NHibernate. Unfortunately, our UnitOfWork resides in a different .dll and it doesn't have a default empty .ctor.   Hello everyone, I am designing a chat applet. In this, a user will append his name to the beginning of the message that he sends to the other user. In the window of other user, I want to retrieve the appended user name from that string. How do I do that? The message sent by the user is as follows : final_msg = user_name + ": " + user_message Hence I want to know how to retrieve the user_name string only. Is there a function that can retrieve a substring upto the first ":"? I dont want to use final_msg.split(":"), because there is a possiblity that the user_message contains ":", which will then give me an array of strings.

• XDebug, how to disable remote debugging for single .php file?

  Hello, I'm using Eclipse IDE + remote Xdebug. EclipseIDE is listening 9000 port for some kind of Xdebug information. There are some php scripts running by cron on server. So, every cron execution xdebug is sending information to my workstation and EclipseIDE is trying to find this file in my project. But file couldn't be find because cron running scrits do not relate to the project I'm working with. So, every cron run Eclipse IDE is alerting this message http://img2.pict.com/22/fc/86/3299517/0/screenshot2b142.png I've tried to add to cron executed php scripts some strings... if (function_exists('xdebug_disable')) { xdebug_disable(); } ... but it didn't helped. • How can I specify the character encoding to be used by OLEDB when querying a DBF?

  Is it possible to specify which character encoding should be used by OLEDB when querying a DBF file? A possible work-around would be to encode the query string before the OLEDB call to the DBF file's character encoding and then encode all the results when they are returned. This will work but it would be nice if OLEDB or possibly ADO.NET could do this for me. UPDATE The suggestion by Viktor Jevdokimov does not seem to work automatically. But it made me investigate manual conversion of the strings. It is possible to use the TextInfo property of CultureInfo to find out the OemCodePage and the WindowsCodePage and use those to get the corresponding Encoding instances to perform manual conversion. But I can not get ADO.NET use these encondings to perform the conversion for me.

• Practical non-Turing-complete languages?

  Nearly all programming languages used are Turing Complete, and while this affords the language to represent any computable algorithm, it also comes with its own set of problems. Seeing as all the algorithms I write are intended to halt, I would like to be able to represent them in a language that guarantees they will halt. Regular expressions used for matching strings and finite state machines are used when lexing, but I'm wondering if there's a more general, broadly language that's not Turing complete? edit: I should clarify, by 'general purpose' I don't necessarily want to be able to write all halting algorithms in the language (I don't think that such a language would exist) but I suspect that there are common threads in halting proofs that can be generalized to produce a language in which all algorithms are guaranteed to halt. There's also another way to tackle this problem - eliminate the need for theoretically infinite memory. Once you limit the amount of memory the machine is allowed, the number of states the machine is in is finite and countable, and therefore you can determine if the algorithm will halt (by not allowing the machine to move into a state it's been in before).

  I am getting this exception from a MySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(): Index and length must refer to a location within the string. I tried manually adding this data in the table from MySQL GUI tools, and it worked perfectly. I see no "out of range" problem in these strings. Does anybody see something wrong?

• PInvoke or using /clr:pure to compile

  I have a set of numerical libraries in C++ and I want to call them interactively in a interpretive language like F# or IronPython. So I have two choices now: Compile the library in native DLL and use PInvoke to call functions in it. Compile the C++ library to .Net dll using visual c++ (/clr:pure compile option). The advantage of 1 is that it is very fast, however there are more work in it, e.g. I cannot PInvoke double pointer (e.g. float **), I must write another wrapper in the C++ library to make the interface friendly to .Net. The advantage of 2 is that I don't need to do know Mashaling strings, arrays, etc. However, the .net dll is slower compared to the native one. What others factors should be considered when choosing between the two?

  I have a TextBox bound to a ViewModel's Text property with the following setup: Xaml <TextBox Text="{Binding Text}"/> C# public class ViewModel : INotifyPropertyChanged { public string Text { get { return m_Text; } set { if (String.Equals(m_Text, value)) { return; } m_Text = value.ToLower(); RaisePropertyChanged("Text"); } } // Snip } When I type some stuff in to the TextBox it successfully sets the Text property on the ViewModel. The problem is that WPF ignores the property changed event that is raised by it's own update. This results in the user not seeing the text they typed converted to lowercase. How can I change this behaviour so that the TextBox updates with lowercase text? Note: this is just an example I have used to illustrate the problem of WPF ignoring events. I'm not really interested in converting strings to lowercase or any issues with String.Equals(string, string).

  Hi All I have been using spring for a while as my IOC. It has also a very nice way of injecting properties in your beans. Now I am participating in a new project where the IOC is Guice. I dont understand fully the concept how should I inject properties in to my beans using Guice. The question : Is it actually possible to inject raw properties ( strings , ints ) into my guice beans. If the answer is no , than maybe you know some nice Properties Framework for java. Because right now I wanted to use the ResourceBundle class for simple properties management in my app. But after using spring for a while this just dont seem seriously enought for me.
