  • Use Apache authentication + authorization to control access to Subversion subdirectories

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
I have a single SVN repo at /var/svn/ with a few subdirectories. Staff must be able to access the top-level directory and all subdirectories within it, but I want to restrict access to subdirectories using alternate htpasswd files. This works for our Staff. <Location /> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider ldap # mod_authnz_ldap AuthzLDAPAuthoritative off AuthLDAPURL "ldap.example.org:636/ou=people,ou=Unit,ou=Host,o=ldapsvc,dc=example,dc=org?uid?sub?(objectClass=PosixAccount)" AuthLDAPGroupAttribute memberUid AuthLDAPGroupAttributeIsDN off Require ldap-group cn=staff,ou=PosixGroup,ou=Unit,ou=Host,o=ldapsvc,dc=example,dc=org </Location> Now, I am trying to restrict access to a subdirectory with a separate htpasswd file, like this: <Location /customerA> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn # mod_authn_file AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider file AuthUserFile /usr/local/etc/apache22/htpasswd.customerA Require user customerA </Location> I can use Firefox and curl to browse to this folder fine: curl https://svn.example.org/customerA/ --user customerA:password But I cannot use check out this SVN repository: $ svn co https://svn.example.org/customerA/ svn: Repository moved permanently to 'https://svn.example.org/customerA/'; please relocate And on the server logs, I get this strange error: # httpd-access.log 192.168.19.13 - - [03/May/2010:16:40:00 -0700] "OPTIONS /customerA HTTP/1.1" 401 401 192.168.19.13 - customerA [03/May/2010:16:40:00 -0700] "OPTIONS /customerA HTTP/1.1" 301 244 # httpd-error.log [Mon May 03 16:40:00 2010] [error] [client 192.168.19.13] Could not fetch resource information. [301, #0] [Mon May 03 16:40:00 2010] [error] [client 192.168.19.13] Requests for a collection must have a trailing slash on the URI. [301, #0] My question: Can I restrict access to Subversion subdirectories using Apache access controls? DocumentRoot is commented out, so it's not clear that the FAQ at http://subversion.apache.org/faq.html#http-301-error applies.

  • Can't access Ubuntu's shared folders from Windows 7

    - by endolith
In Ubuntu Maverick, I've shared some folders using the Nautilus "Sharing Options" GUI. I can see them from Windows 7, but when I try to access them (from Windows) it asks for a username and password. No matter what I enter, it won't let me in. How do I configure this to share normally? Update: I've found that some of the shared folders let me in, but others don't. Of the ones that do, some of their subfolders do, others don't, etc. How can I investigate what's causing this?

  • MVP.Years++ ; // Thanks Microsoft

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Even though today is April fools day, it is my MVP renewal date. So, there is always the chance of thinking not being renewed as an April fools joke.  Well, I get to postpone that joke one more time. It looks like, I’ve been renewed again. WAHOOO!! :) Thank you Microsoft, and thank you to everyone one of you for your support and best wishes, and most of all, thanks to our MVP lead, Melissa – many don’t realize it, but it’s a tough job she has to do. Think about it, all the people who are MVPs, those who no longer will be, and those who want to be. 11 years ago when I got my first award, my love for technology was insane. Today, it is worse.I will remain a technologist until I die, even after I retire and grow crinkly. I would want my dentures fitted with Microprocessors.Technology is what I passionately love doing. • How to access network folders from within windows 7 virtualbox

    - by musher
At work we have fileshare storages accessible via the network. I'm not super familiar with this kind of networking, so I'm not 100% sure how to word this question/give enough details right away so please ask for any clarifications. That being said: Host: Xubuntu 14.04 Guest: Windows 7 enterprise Via thunar I can access these network drives fine by going to Browse Network > Windows Network > Server I want to use The name given in the address bar is: smb://SERVER-NAME So my question now, is how do I go about accessing these folders via my win 7 machine in virtualbox? I've searched but all I get is people who can't figure out shared folders between host/guest (which I've got working)

  • Kinect Hacking at Microsoft Developer Days 2012 Bulgaria

    - by Szymon Kobalczyk
Last week I had a pleasure to speak at the Microsoft’s Developer Days 2012 in Sophia, Bulgaria. It was a great conference and I met lots of cool people there. I did a session about Kinect Hacking. My goal was to give a good understanding of Kinect inner workings, how it can be used to develop Windows applications. Later I showed examples of interesting projects utilizing the full potential the Kinect sensor. Below you can find my slides and source code of one of the demos (the one where “Szymon went to the Moon”). But I wasn’t the only one to talk about Kinect. On the 2nd day Rob Miles also did a fun session titled “Kinect Mayhem: Psychedelic Ghost Cameras, Virtual Mallets, a Kiss Detector and a Head Tapping Game” (you can watch recording of this session from TechDays Netherlands on Channel9). Later that day Yishai Galatzer made a big surprise during his session about Extending WebMatrix, and showed a plugin enabling to take control of WebMatrix with Kinect gestures. Best thing was that he wrote it during the conference, with no previous experience with Kinect SDK (I might helped him a bit to get started). Thanks for the invitation and I hope to see you soon!

  • Evolution has no access to couchdb

    - by berkes
Evolution gives the error "Cannot open addressbook". "We were unable to open this addressbook. This either means you have entered an incorrect URI, or the server is unreachable". "Details: Operation not permitted". (rough translation from Dutch). Enabling verbose logging in (desktop)couchdb tells me roughly the same: [info] [<0.7875.1>] 127.0.0.1 - - 'PUT' /contacts/ 400 [debug] [<0.7875.1>] httpd 400 error response: {"error":"invalid_consumer","reason":"Invalid consumer (key or signature method)."} It seems that evolution tries to fetch the contacts, then couchdb denies access, and then evolution fails to do a proper oauth. This is on Ubuntu 10.10, with its default dektopcouch 1.0.1. Any hints on where to start would be most appreciated :)

  • Access Control Service v2

    - by Your DisplayName here!
A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). You can read about the details here. On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)

  • ANTLRWorks 2: Early Access Preview 10

    - by Geertjan
I took a quick look at how the ANTLRWorks 2 project is getting on... and discovered that today, March 23, the new early access preview 10 has been released: http://www.antlr.org/wiki/display/ANTLR4/1.+Overview Downloaded it immediately and was impressed when browsing through the Java.g file that I also found on the Antlr site: (Click to enlarge the image above.) On the page above, the following enhancements are listed: Add tooltips for rule references Finally fixed the navigator update bug Major improvements to code completion Fix legacy mode Many performance and stability updates I've blogged before about how the developers on the above project consider their code completion to be "scary fast". Some discussions have taken place about how code developed by the ANTLRWorks team could be contributed to the NetBeans project, since NetBeans IDE and ANTLRWorks 2 are both based on the NetBeans Platform.

  • outlook security alert after adding a second wireless access point to the network

    - by Mark
Just added a Netgear WG103 Wireless Access Point in our conference room to allow visitors to access the internet through out internal network. When switched on visitors can connect to the intenet and everything works fine. Except, when the Access Point is switched on, normal users of the network get a Security Alert when they try to start Outlook 2007. The Security Alert is the same as the one shown in question 148526 asked by desiny back in June 2010 (http://serverfault.com/questions/148526/outlook-security-alert-following-exchange-2007-upgrade-to-sp2) rather than "autodiscover.ad.unc.edu" my security alert references our "Remote.server.org.uk". If I view the certificate it relates to "Netgear HTTPS:....", but the only Netgear equipment we have is the new Access Point installed in the conference room. If the Access Point is not switched on we do not get the Security Alert. At first I thought it was because we had selected "WPA-PSK & WPA2-PSK" Network Authentication Type but it continues to occur even if we opt for "Shared Key" WEP Data Encryption. I do not understand why adding a Netgear Wireless Access point would cause Outlook to issue a Security Alert when users try to read their email. Does anyone know what I have to do to get rid of the Security Alert? Thanks in advance for reading this and helping me out.

  • Is it unethical to sell the award of a competition? [closed]

    - by Ahmet Yildirim
This summer, i won a competition held by microsoft & nokia... Winners from each uni. received an high-end smartphone... Knowing that particular "high-end smartphone" had not much user to develop for, as soon as i receive it, i put an ad on a ebay-like site to sell it. Eventually i exchanged it with a tablet which had high developer demand & many many users to develop for , so i could make money by developing for it. I also email microsoft asking, when something technical goes wrong with the device , can i get it fixed by warranty. Which i never received a respond. Later on, after a while... I got some feedback from a connection i have from nokia, regarding sale of the device & asking for the warranty.. He says and i quote : " They say, they werent happy that you sold the device and got offended that you asked for warranty. You should not expect anything at all from microsoft or nokia in the future. " I was like what the frak, they didnt gave it to me as a gift, i won it in a competition as an award , it is my right to do whatever i want. How ethical is that , they dont respond to my email directly? Is it unethical to sell a gadget you won in a competition? Is it unethical to ask for warranty on award?

  • Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

    - by Lucas Jones
Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

  • Cannot access BIOS on a Lenovo U410

    - by Michael
I recently took a step into Linux on my Lenovo Idea pad U410; after a couple hours I managed to get it installed with the drivers. However now I no longer have the ability to access the BIOS. I tried the usual FN+F2, F2,F1,Del,Tab,F12,F11; all to no avail. I was wondering is there something different to be done running Ubuntu? I know that the BIOS would generally not be affected by the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite remote desktop access tools and tips; now we’re back to highlight your favorite tools and how you use them. The two prevailing themes among all the tools suggested were pricing and ease of deployment. On that front, LogMeIn had a strong following. Mtech writes: I use Logmein and am amazed the free version can be used even for business purposes. I also felt so bad and wanted to pay for the Pro version just out of gratitude but they called me personally from the USA and said why pay when the free version does all you need! What a company. • How to setup passwordless SSH access for root user

    - by Cerin
I need to configure a machine so software installation can be automated remotely via SSH. Following the wiki, I was able to setup SSH keys so my user can access the machine without a password, but I still need to manually enter my password when I use sudo, which obviously an automated process shouldn't have to do. Although my /etc/ssh/sshd_config has PermitRootLogin yes, I can't seem to be able to login as root, presumably because it's not a "real" account with a separate password. How do I configure SSH keys, so a process can remotely login as root on Ubuntu?

  • WiFi AdHoc Network: Unable to access peer by ip

    - by Pranav
I've set up a WiFi AdHoc network in Maverick and selected the IPv4 settings as "Shared to other computers". On the client computer, I joined the network with the same SSID and set IPv4 method to Manual and I gave it an IP 10.42.43.2 (As on the first computer, the auto generated IP was 10.42.43.1). From either of the computers, I'm not able to access the other using the IP (in browser). Any idea why? (If I browse to 10.42.43.1 from the first computer, it works) Thanks!

  • Sharing samba-folder with root access

    - by Industrial
Hi everyone, I have a staging server in my network running Ubuntu server 10.10, being my main development area. As I need to access the files in the Apache root from other computers in the network, I have setup samba with the following settings: [www] comment = Apache root www path = /var/www writable = yes force user = root force group = root On the host computer, running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop, I am trying to mount the drive with a bash file looking like below: #!/bin/bash sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.5/www /media/www/ -o username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 What happens is that I get mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) thrown in my face whilst trying to execute the mount. I've done exactly the same, with exactly the same smb.conf & mount-bash file on another computer in my network, but this just wont work. What am I doing wrong? I am running out of ideas.

  • Sudo Non-Password access to /sys/power/state

    - by John
On my computer, pm-hibernate appears to be broken, however using the command echo disk > /sys/power/state appears to work perfectly. Now I just need regular user access to it, using sudo. How do I do this? The command sudo echo disk > /sys/power/state simply returns bash: /sys/power/state: Permission denied. Also, I need this in a regularly used script, how can I make it so that I don't have to type in my password for it to work???

  • how to add programs to ubuntu without internet access

    - by captainandcoke
I don't have internet access at my home and it takes me about a half hour to ride my bike to the library. I have downloaded .deb files to try to install at my home computer but everyone I have downloaded says it can't install because it depends on package X. The next day I will download package X and it will require package Y. Is there anyway to find out what ALL the sub-dependencies are for deb files? I have tried to boot from USB or External Hard drive on the library computers but the security settings prevent this. Also, I do not know anyone with a Linux computer.

  • Microsoft Changes Developer Account Registration Requirements

    - by Tim Murphy
Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that Microsoft seems to have changed the requirements for Corporate accounts.  These requirements were not in effect when I originally setup the account for the company that I work for.  We also recently had our corporate account canceled without explanation and are in the process of working to get it reinstated.  This all seems to revolve around rules to increase confidence that in the producers of content.  They are now having Symantec validate a company based on legal documents. In the past there have been problems with getting credit cards accepted.  We have had to setup new Live IDs to satisfy whatever glitch the system had or unexplainable requirement.  I am hoping that in the time that has elapsed these problems have been resolved. In truth I can’t say that these new requirements weren’t always in place, but it is getting frustrating to help clients setup accounts.  I am encourage that they have taken steps to safeguard the consumer from Joe-fly-by-night, but they also need to make sure that the process doesn’t become so complex that it drives away companies from participating in the store.  We will have to keep an eye on this as things evolve. del.icio.us Tags: Windows Phone Development,Windows 8 Development,Windows Phone,Windows 8,Registration,Corporate Accounts

  • Faster, Simpler access to Azure Tables with Enzo Azure API

    - by Herve Roggero
After developing the latest version of Enzo Cloud Backup I took the time to create an API that would simplify access to Azure Tables (the Enzo Azure API). At first, my goal was to make the code simpler compared to the Microsoft Azure SDK. But as it turns out it is also a little faster; and when using the specialized methods (the fetch strategies) it is much faster out of the box than the Microsoft SDK, unless you start creating complex parallel and resilient routines yourself. Last but not least, I decided to add a few extension methods that I think you will find attractive, such as the ability to transform a list of entities into a DataTable. So let’s review each area in more details. Simpler Code My first objective was to make the API much easier to use than the Azure SDK. I wanted to reduce the amount of code necessary to fetch entities, remove the code needed to add automatic retries and handle transient conditions, and give additional control, such as a way to cancel operations, obtain basic statistics on the calls, and control the maximum number of REST calls the API generates in an attempt to avoid throttling conditions in the first place (something you cannot do with the Azure SDK at this time). Strongly Typed Before diving into the code, the following examples rely on a strongly typed class called MyData. The way MyData is defined for the Azure SDK is similar to the Enzo Azure API, with the exception that they inherit from different classes. With the Azure SDK, classes that represent entities must inherit from TableServiceEntity, while classes with the Enzo Azure API must inherit from BaseAzureTable or implement a specific interface. // With the SDK public class MyData1 : TableServiceEntity {     public string Message { get; set; }     public string Level { get; set; }     public string Severity { get; set; } } //  With the Enzo Azure API public class MyData2 : BaseAzureTable {     public string Message { get; set; }     public string Level { get; set; }     public string Severity { get; set; } } Simpler Code Now that the classes representing an Azure Table entity are defined, let’s review the methods that the Azure SDK would look like when fetching all the entities from an Azure Table (note the use of a few variables: the _tableName variable stores the name of the Azure Table, and the ConnectionString property returns the connection string for the Storage Account containing the table): // With the Azure SDK public List<MyData1> FetchAllEntities() {      CloudStorageAccount storageAccount = CloudStorageAccount.Parse(ConnectionString);      CloudTableClient tableClient = storageAccount.CreateCloudTableClient();      TableServiceContext serviceContext = tableClient.GetDataServiceContext();      CloudTableQuery<MyData1> partitionQuery =         (from e in serviceContext.CreateQuery<MyData1>(_tableName)         select new MyData1()         {            PartitionKey = e.PartitionKey,            RowKey = e.RowKey,            Timestamp = e.Timestamp,            Message = e.Message,            Level = e.Level,            Severity = e.Severity            }).AsTableServiceQuery<MyData1>();        return partitionQuery.ToList();  } This code gives you automatic retries because the AsTableServiceQuery does that for you. Also, note that this method is strongly-typed because it is using LINQ. Although this doesn’t look like too much code at first glance, you are actually mapping the strongly-typed object manually. So for larger entities, with dozens of properties, your code will grow. And from a maintenance standpoint, when a new property is added, you may need to change the mapping code. You will also note that the mapping being performed is optional; it is desired when you want to retrieve specific properties of the entities (not all) to reduce the network traffic. If you do not specify the properties you want, all the properties will be returned; in this example we are returning the Message, Level and Severity properties (in addition to the required PartitionKey, RowKey and Timestamp). The Enzo Azure API does the mapping automatically and also handles automatic reties when fetching entities. The equivalent code to fetch all the entities (with the same three properties) from the same Azure Table looks like this: // With the Enzo Azure API public List<MyData2> FetchAllEntities() {        AzureTable at = new AzureTable(_accountName, _accountKey, _ssl, _tableName);        List<MyData2> res = at.Fetch<MyData2>("", "Message,Level,Severity");        return res; } As you can see, the Enzo Azure API returns the entities already strongly typed, so there is no need to map the output. Also, the Enzo Azure API makes it easy to specify the list of properties to return, and to specify a filter as well (no filter was provided in this example; the filter is passed as the first parameter).  Fetch Strategies Both approaches discussed above fetch the data sequentially. In addition to the linear/sequential fetch methods, the Enzo Azure API provides specific fetch strategies. Fetch strategies are designed to prepare a set of REST calls, executed in parallel, in a way that performs faster that if you were to fetch the data sequentially. For example, if the PartitionKey is a GUID string, you could prepare multiple calls, providing appropriate filters ([‘a’, ‘b’[, [‘b’, ‘c’[, [‘c’, ‘d[, …), and send those calls in parallel. As you can imagine, the code necessary to create these requests would be fairly large. With the Enzo Azure API, two strategies are provided out of the box: the GUID and List strategies. If you are interested in how these strategies work, see the Enzo Azure API Online Help. Here is an example code that performs parallel requests using the GUID strategy (which executes more than 2 t o3 times faster than the sequential methods discussed previously): public List<MyData2> FetchAllEntitiesGUID() {     AzureTable at = new AzureTable(_accountName, _accountKey, _ssl, _tableName);     List<MyData2> res = at.FetchWithGuid<MyData2>("", "Message,Level,Severity");     return res; } Faster Results With Sequential Fetch Methods Developing a faster API wasn’t a primary objective; but it appears that the performance tests performed with the Enzo Azure API deliver the data a little faster out of the box (5%-10% on average, and sometimes to up 50% faster) with the sequential fetch methods. Although the amount of data is the same regardless of the approach (and the REST calls are almost exactly identical), the object mapping approach is different. So it is likely that the slight performance increase is due to a lighter API. Using LINQ offers many advantages and tremendous flexibility; nevertheless when fetching data it seems that the Enzo Azure API delivers faster.  For example, the same code previously discussed delivered the following results when fetching 3,000 entities (about 1KB each). The average elapsed time shows that the Azure SDK returned the 3000 entities in about 5.9 seconds on average, while the Enzo Azure API took 4.2 seconds on average (39% improvement). With Fetch Strategies When using the fetch strategies we are no longer comparing apples to apples; the Azure SDK is not designed to implement fetch strategies out of the box, so you would need to code the strategies yourself. Nevertheless I wanted to provide out of the box capabilities, and as a result you see a test that returned about 10,000 entities (1KB each entity), and an average execution time over 5 runs. The Azure SDK implemented a sequential fetch while the Enzo Azure API implemented the List fetch strategy. The fetch strategy was 2.3 times faster. Note that the following test hit a limit on my network bandwidth quickly (3.56Mbps), so the results of the fetch strategy is significantly below what it could be with a higher bandwidth. Additional Methods The API wouldn’t be complete without support for a few important methods other than the fetch methods discussed previously. The Enzo Azure API offers these additional capabilities: - Support for batch updates, deletes and inserts - Conversion of entities to DataRow, and List<> to a DataTable - Extension methods for Delete, Merge, Update, Insert - Support for asynchronous calls and cancellation - Support for fetch statistics (total bytes, total REST calls, retries…) For more information, visit http://www.bluesyntax.net or go directly to the Enzo Azure API page (http://www.bluesyntax.net/EnzoAzureAPI.aspx). • Installing Ruby on Rails without access to command line

    - by Darwin
I'm VERY new to this whole web dev thing but I can program and I liked Ruby when I used it before. Now, I've got web hosting and a domain and a site on there that's currently ran under Joomla but I'd like to experiment with Rails. The most access I can get to the server is FTP and maybe a setting here and there in the control panel. Definitely no command line. Is there a way to just, I don't know, upload ruby on rails to a folder and run it in a browser? That's how Joomla works I think.
