• Link bonding across multiple switches?

  I've read up a little bit on bonding nics with ifenslave; what I'm having trouble understanding is whether there is special configuration needed in order to split the bonds across two switches. For example, if I have several servers that all have two nics each, and two separate switches, do I just configure the bonds and plug 1 nic from each into switch #1 and the other from each into switch #2? or is there more to it than that? If the bonds are active-backup, will a nic failure on single machine mean that server may become disconnected since the rest of the machines are using the primary nic and it's using the secondary? Or do you link the switches with one cable as well?

• kvm-over-ip, multiple machines per cable run

  I'm looking at getting a kvm-over-ip setup for a server room. Typically these devices have 16 or so cat5 leads that come out of them and then a convertor that converts each cat5 into a vga & ps2 pair. Can you run one cable from the unit into a switch, and then leads from the switch into each machine ? I have several machines on the other side of the server room that i'd like to have avaliable but i dont want to run 16 cables to them. I'm thinking this should be possible being IP layer and all, but as each device normally has its own cable out the back of the kvm unit i'm not certain. Perhaps the kvm's rear ports act essentially like a switch anyway in which case it should work, or perhaps if i run all 16 cables into a seperate switch right next to it and aggregate the ports together, run one cable to a switch on the other side of the room with similar number of ports agregated together, then use that switch to plug each macine into ? I'm fairly sure this is possible, but i just want to check before i shell out the cash as i've never tried it.

I use Google Picassa to create new start and end points, but I dont know a good way to join mpgs yet. Whats the best free software i can use for this?

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.

  Is this some new "feature" for thunderbird 8? When I start thunderbird it starts by opening thunderbird. Once it is loading thunderbird it loads another 6 thunderbirds. The windows are called Mozilla Thunderbird Inbox - [email protected] - Mozilla Thuderbird Inbox - [email protected] - Mozilla Thuderbird Inbox - [email protected] - Mozilla Thuderbird Inbox - [email protected] - Mozilla Thuderbird (yes it repeats the same one a few times) Inbox - [email protected] - Mozilla Thuderbird I have 7 email accounts but for whatever reason it only made 3 windows. What happened to the one window? When I minimize to tray I got 4 of thunderbird icons. When closing one of them all of the close. My other windows 7(32 bit not 64 bit) only have one instance.

• Nginx Proxying to Multiple IP Addresses for CMS' Website Preview

  First-time poster, so bear with me. I'm relatively new to Nginx, but have managed to figure out what I've needed... until now. Nginx v1.0.15 is proxying to PHP-FPM v.5.3.10, which is listening at http://127.0.0.1:9000. [Knock on wood] everything has been running smoothly in terms of hosting our CMS and many websites. Now, we've developed our CMS and configured Nginx such that each supported website has a preview URL (e.g. http://[WebsiteID].ourcms.com/) where the site can be, you guessed it, previewed in those situations where DNS doesn't yet resolve to our server, etc. Specifically, we use Nginx's Map module (http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpMapModule) and a regular expression in the server_name of the CMS' server{ } block to 1) lookup a website's primary domain name from its preview URL and then 2) forward the request to the "matched" primary domain. The corresponding Nginx configuration: map $host $h { 123.ourcms.com www.example1.com; 456.ourcms.com www.example2.com; 789.ourcms.com www.example3.com; } and server { listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:80; listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:443 ssl; root /var/www/ourcms.com; server_name ~^(.*)\.ourcms\.com$; ssl_certificate /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.chained.crt; ssl_certificate_key /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.key; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1/; proxy_set_header Host $h; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; } } (Note: I do realize that the regex in the server_name should be "tighter" for security reasons and match only the format of the website ID (i.e. a UUID in our case).) This configuration works for 99% of our sites... except those that have a dedicated IP address for an installed SSL certificate. A "502 Bad Gateway" is returned for these and I'm unsure as to why. This is how I think the current configuration works for any requests that match the regex (e.g. http://123.ourcms.com/): Nginx looks up the website's primary domain from the mapping, and as a result of the proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1 directive, passes the request back to Nginx itself, which since the proxied request has a hostname corresponding to the website's primary domain name, via the proxy_set_header Host $h directive, Nginx handles the request as if it was as direct request for that hostname. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this understanding. Should I be proxying to those website's dedicated IP addresses? I tried this, but it didn't seem to work? Is there a setting in the Proxy module that I'm missing? Thanks for the help. MB

  Hi there, We have a company server with a variety of websites. They are maintained by different people from within our company. All websites are public. The server access is limited to our company only. This is NOT a shared hosting environment. We are looking into securing the server, currently analyzing the risk related to permissions of files. We feel the highest risk is when files are uploaded and then opened/executed by the public. This should not happen, but an error in a script might allow people to do so (there are image uploaders, file uploaders, etc). Uploader scripts use PHP. So the question is: what is the best way of setting / organizing permissions of files and processes? There seem to be several options to run PHP (and Apache), and setting the permissions. What should we take into consideration? Any tips? We are considering mod_php and FastCGI, but perhaps given our situation other solutions are preferred?

• Version Control: multiple version hell, file synchronization

  Hello. I would like to know how you normally deal with this situation: I have a set of utility functions. Say..5..10 files. And technically they are static library, cross-platform - SConscript/SConstruct plus Visual Studio project (not solution). Those utility functions are used in multiple small projects (15+, number increases over time). Each project has a copy of a few files or of an entire library, not a link into one central place. Sometimes project uses one file, two files, some use everything. Normally, utility functions are included as a copy of every file and SConscript/SConstruct or Visual Studio Project (depending on the situation). Each project has a separate git repository. Sometimes one project is derived from other, sometimes it isn't. You work on every one of them, in random order. There are no other people (to make things simpler) The problem arises when while working on one project you modify those utility function files. Because each project has a copy of file, this introduces new version, which leads to the mess when you try later (week later, for example) to guess which version has a most complete functionality (i.e. you added a function to a.cpp in one project, and added another function to a.cpp in another project, which created a version fork) How would you handle this situation to avoid "version hell"? One way I can think of is using symbolic links/hard links, but it isn't perfect - if you delete one central storage, it will all go to hell. And hard links won't work on dual-boot system (although symbolic links will). It looks like what I need is something like advanced git repository, where code for the project is stored in one local repository, but is synchronized with multiple external repositories. But I'm not sure how to do it or if it is possible to do this with git. So, what do you think?

  I can't seem to figure out the problems with my script to alter SQL Server 2008 database and file growth. There are two data files and a log file, all which need to have Autogrowth ON.   After buying a new laptop(XPS L501X) with windows 7 preinstalled, I decided to make it dual boot with windows Vista. I now know about the issue with installing previous versions of windows, and the deletion of the MBR. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but Microsoft no longer sends install disks with their computers, so there is no way to just re-install windows 7. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Data preservation is not an issue, as the laptop is new.

• jQuery Cycle : Multiple Instances, detect end of each instance

  I am using multiple instances of Cycle for a portfolio; Only one is shown and the others are hidden. Each Cycle is a project with multiple images. The only thing I can't figure out is how to detect the end of the « current » Cycle instance. with after: function, it is triggered for all instances at once, impossible to get « local » events.   I have a comma delimited file that includes two columns date/time (which imports as Excel's mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm custom format) and status of 1 or 0. The status represents a piece of equipment either being on or off. I'm trying to generate a graph that will show, hours up vs. down by day. CONSIDER: 1/1/2012 00:00, 1 1/1/2012 03:00, 0 1/1/2012 14:00, 1 1/3/2012 00:00, 0 This tells me that the equipment was up for three hours, down for eleven hours, and then up for thirty-four hours (across two calendar days). However, I would like to generate a graph that shows how many hours PER DAY we were up or down. CONSIDER: 1/1 XXXXXXXXXXXXX----------- (up 13, down 11) 1/2 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (up 24) To me, it seems that I need to generate a dataset summing HOURS by STATUS by CALENDAR DAY...but I can't seem to find a flavor of pivot table or nested SUM(IF(SUMIF(...))) combination to make it work. Most troubling is accounting for date changes...in my example above, since my uptime starting at 14:00 on 1/1/2012 crosses midnight, I need to know that 10 uptime hours get totalled with 1/1/2012 and 24 uptime hours get totalled with 1/2/2012. I may be able to do something with a calendar list to drive the date summation, but then I need a way to compare 01/01/2012 to 01/01/2012 03:00 as equal. There's got to be a way along the lines of if(INTEGER-PORTIONS-OF-SERIAL-DATES-ARE-EQUAL,TOTAL-HOURS-IF-VALUE-IS_1,0) but nothing's worked so far. Any suggestions? I've been battling this most of the day, and need a fresh perspective. Thanks

  I'm trying to set up Gnus to use both my gmail accounts but I can only ever get one at a time to show up in the list of folders. It prompts me for three username passwords on startup. After I enter all three, I can access my work account and the gmail account that I enter the creds for second. This is really annoying! Any ideas?

  When I create a new user in exchange, it asks me to provide the User Logon Name. There is a dropdown box that supposedly allows you to select a domain for the user's login. What is this referring to? How can I make it so that I can create users with different domains in their user logon name? p.s. I am very aware of 'Accepted Domains' in Exchange allowing one user to have several email addresses in different domains. I am just curious how I can modify the user's Logon name specifically.

• File/printer sharing issues on network with multiple OSes

  My workplace consists of computers running a variety of different operating systems, and I have been running into problems getting some of them to connect to a shared drive and printer over the network. Here is a brief description of the computers involved and the issues I have encountered: 1: Dell desktop, Windows Vista Business-- This is the computer I want the others to connect to. It has a USB printer and eSATA hard drive enclosure that I have set up for sharing, with different accounts for the various users. 2: Fujitsu laptop, Windows XP Tablet edition-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and hard drive. 3: Lenovo laptop, Windows Vista Business 64 bit-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and drive. 4: Apple MacBook, OS 10.4-- Can connect to the shared drive, but not to the shared printer. I am aware that the printer issue is due to a known incompatibility between Vista and OS 10.4 and earlier with regards to Samba. It is not a big problem, however, as this computer can access a network printer. 5: Sony laptop, Windows Vista Home Premium-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. It can see computer 1 and its shared drive on the network, and appears to successfully log in to user accounts. However, if you try to access the shared drive, it says you do not have permission. I have tried both standard and administrator accounts, and none can access the drive from this computer. 6: MacBook Pro, OS 10.5 (there are two of these)-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. They can't see computer 1 on the network. For that matter, they also can't see each other or the older Mac, but can see and access shared folders on the XP machine (computer 2) and can see other PCs in the building. I was able to add the shared printer manually by typing in its network location, but was unable to manually add the shared drive in the same way. So, what I am looking for is suggestions on how to get computers 5 and 6 to connect to the shared drive. Since they can already connect to the shared printer (which is on the same computer as the shared drive), it seems reasonable that they should be able to access the drive as well.

  I have a HTC HD2 which runs Windows Mobile 6.5. The way you can integrate different accounts is just amazing. You can integrate facebook,twitter,youtube. You can also sync your mail, and calendar from Hotmail or Gmail. It all works just great. Now my problem is that I have different profiles. I have my personal profile, and on the other side I have work profile. My work email is on Gmail Apps, so I have a mail and calendar there also. I also have a personal facebook account, and one I use for work. So my question is if there is a way of switching between these profiles quickly.

If I put these straight into the "tomcat/webapps"-folder, they'll get deployed as; hXXp://localhost/prod-1.2.1/ hXXp://localhost/test-2.0.0/ This works but really I would like them to show up as; hXXp://localhost/vegshop/prod/ hXXp://localhost/vegshop/test/ As you see I somehow would like the "vegshop" to be included in the context path. I also would like the version-numbering to disappear without having to rename the WAR-files. Thank you. This is Apache Tomcat v6.0 under Linux 2.6, running SUN JDK 1.6.

  I would like to create an SQL Developer connection to a database through a couple of tunnels. The steps right now are: Connect to server A - connect to server B - run sqlplus against tnsname on a server that I do not have ssh access to. Is there an easy way of using SQL Developer instead of sqlplus? I have read through 20 articles on the subject and still have no idea how to actually make the connection. I understand that you can chain ssh -L commands to get the server connection, but I don't know how to use that connection in SQL Developer.

• Cable management between multiple racks

  I am in the planning phase of re-cabling our 5 racks in one of our offices and I would like to ask for some guidance on how you go, or would go about managing cables that goes between racks. In our situation we have 5 racks where the furthest to the right is our main patch panel for 300 floor ports. The rack next to it is our main comms rack where main switches and ISP routers are located. the other 3 racks next to the comms rack then all need to connect back to the main comms rack. I am not sure if a 48 port patch panel in each rack would be any good for this scenario? mainly because i am not sure this can be linked back to the main switch with only 1 cable. Would a 48 port switch in each rack be better as you can uplink those back to main switch? Or should we just run cables between racks back to the main switch? Hope someone can offer some guidiance.   My home network consists of a couple Windows XP machines and a Windows 7 box. One of the Windows XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, I just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In Windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. I.e. I can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In Windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box?

• Compare 2 sets of data in Excel and returning a value when multiple columns match

  I have a data set for employees that contains name and 3 attributes (job function, job grade and location). I then have a data set for open positions that contains the requisition number and 3 attributes (job function, job grade and job location). For every employee, i would like the three attributes associated with them compared to the same three attributes of the open positions and have the cooresponding requisition numbers displayed for each employee where there is a match.
