• Running gdb on Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 Install

  Hi all, I am trying to run gdb to debug my Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 install and having a couple of problems: It seems like the package installed by Ubuntu for Apache2 does not include debugging symbols; is there a different version of the package I should be using for developing/debugging? When I try to run gdb, I get an error that looks to be caused by some missing environment variable. Are there additional options I should pass to "run" to get this to work? Theming a Silverlight Application using Custom Themes Deborah Kurata's next tutorial in the series is also about themes, but this time it's about custom themes... or rather customized from a 'standard' one in this case. Adding a New Page to a Multi-Page Silverlight Application Deborah Kurata's last available post in the tutorial series is this one on adding a new page to the app. Windows Phone 7 Project Sergey Barskiy has a pair of posts up about a calendar control that he is building and has out on CodePlex... nice-looking control too! Windows Phone 7 Controls Project Update Sergey Barskiy's second post is an update to the calendar... the biggest update being the ability to use the Toolkit context menu. How to Create Ad Rotator with Telerik TransitionControl and CoverFlow control for Silverlight Miroslav Nedyalkov uses the Telerik TransitionControl and CoverFlow controls to produce a great-looking ad rotator using any ContentControl or ListBox... very nice demo on the page.... Building Touch Interfaces for Windows Phones, Part 2 Jeff Prosise has part 2 of his tutorial series on WP7 Touch Interfaces up... and he's processing touch events directly in this one. Fixing the ListPicker / ScrollViewer Problem in Windows Phone 7 Matthias Shapiro has a couple of posts out that I've missed... this one is on an issue with ListPickers in a ScrollViewer where the listpicker gets hit rather than the scroll, and of course he has a work-around... but you'll need the source for the ListPicker to do it. Embedding a Sound File in Windows Phone 7 app (Silverlight) The next post by Matthias Shapiro is an explanation of embedding a sound file in a WP7 app with 2 conditions: 1) it downloads with your app, and 2) it plays no matter what. • How can I fix Office Sharepoint Search service?

  For some reason, in operations server services, Office Sharepoint Search Service is MISSING! Which means I cant get Shared services working, which in turn I cannot get, and I do not think I have ever got Usage and reporting to see who is visiting my website, counter and with what OS/ browser ETC. I dont think I have ever seen this work in the 2 years trying with sharepoint. So in essense I have two problems, most important SEARCH, second usage reports. When trying to search, all i get is unknown error. Nothing is in my event viewer at all. I have tried http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=96 , in the comments on that site, on other person reports search is missing entirely and is going to uninstall. Im tired of uninstall sharepoint and resinstalling to fix an odd off issue. I have things setup with Team foundation server that took forever to get work and reinstallation is not my solution. As for usage reporting, this is what microsoft responds to the " Both Windows SharePoint Services Usage logging and Office SharePoint Usage Processing must be enabled to view usage reports. Please contact your administrator to ensure that these services are enabled. " error I cannot do all the steps since SSP needs to be setup which i cant above.

• Apache start failing after apache config modifications, showing syntax error, cannot load php5apache2_2.dll into server

  I am stuck again with apache setup guys. I am working on a Windows 7 system. I copied the working php5 installation directory from teammates, copied the necessary .dll files from inside php5 installation folder (like they were in the working setup of teammates) to my windows/system32/. Apache server started successfully with the default apache config file. I was able to access localhost in browser. But php code was not parsing. I noticed no such line like the following in the apache config file:- # PHP5 module LoadModule php5_module D:/php5/php5apache2_2.dll If I add this line, apache server start fails. Running test configuration gives the following error - httpd.exe: Syntax error on line 60 of C:/Program Files (x86)/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load D:/php5/php5apache2_2.dll into server: The specified procedure could not be found. But the dll file is there in the specified location and I have given all permissions to the current system user to the php5 installation directory. The same line also appears in the apache error log, though I am not sure when exactly logs are written to the log file. I am confused if log entries are not made if I have opened the log file for reading? lol ... because I could not observe a pattern in when entries are made. I saw some log entries being made, some not. Oh, why is apache setup such a headache always????

• Integration of SharePoint 2010 with TFS2010

  We have performed following steps as of now- Install TFS2010 10.0.30319.1 (RTM) on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(app tier) SQL 2008 SP1 with Cumulative update 2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(data tier) Reporting Service is installed on app tier. After this installation worked fine we installed SharePoint 2010 on app tier. After installation we followed http://blogs.msdn.com/b/team_foundation/archive/2010/03/06/configuring-sharepoint-server-2010-beta-for-dashboard-compatibility-with-tfs-2010-beta2-rc.aspx for configuration. We are not able to perform the last step described in the link as following error occured- TF249063: The following Web service is not available: http://apptier:31254/_vti_bin/TeamFoundationIntegrationService.asmx. This Web service is used for the Team Foundation Server Extensions for SharePoint Products. The underlying error is: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.. Verify that the following URL points to a valid SharePoint Web application and that the application is available: http://apptier:31254. If the URL is correct and the Web application is operating normally, verify that a firewall is not blocking access to the Web application. We have also noticed that Document Folder in Team project also have red x. Please help. Thanks upfront.

• Building a personal website using Silverlight.

  I’ve always believed that as a developer you should always have a hobby project going on. I think a hobby project needs to contain at least one of following things: Something that you have never done before. Something that you are interested in. Something that you can work on in your spare time without affecting your *paying* job. I decided my hobby project would be an entire web application written in Silverlight that could be used as a self-promotion/marketing tool. This goal of the site is to provide information on the work that I’ve done to conferences, future employers and anyone else that wanted to learn more about me. Before I go any further, if you just want to check out the site then it is located at http://michaelcrump.info. So, what did I use to create it? MVVM Light – I’m a big fan of this software. The item and project templates plus code snippets make this a huge win for any SL/WPF/WP7 application. Jetpack Theme by Microsoft – I suck at designing so I used this template to help speed up this project. ComponentOne 3rd Party Controls – I have a license and really like several of their products. A User Control that Jeremy Likness created called DynamicXaml (used with his permission). I had created my own version of this a while back, but Jeremy’s implementation was simply better. Main Page – Designed to create my “brand”. This was built for a quick glimpse of who I am and what do I do.  Blog – The best marketing tool for a developer is their blog. I decided to go with an HTML page displaying my site and the user could pop into full-screen if desired. I also included my feed and Silverlight-Zone. (Another site I work on) Online – This page links to sites that I have been featured on as well as community involvement and awards. I also have a web service that I can update this information without re-compiling the Silverlight App. Projects – I’ve been wanting to use a CoverFlow for a really long time now. =) This page list several hobby projects as well as a few professional projects.  Resume Page – This page only exist because I got tired of sending companies my resume in e-mail. I can now provide a deep link to this page and the recruiter can print, search or save my resume. The PDF of my resume exist in a folder that I can easily update without recompiling the app. Contact Page – Just a contact page with a web service that sends the email. The Send button becomes disabled after a successful send. I thought of adding captcha to this page but in the end didn’t think it was worth it. Looking back at this app, I’m happy with how it turned out. I love Silverlight and I am already thinking of my next hobby project.   I have somehow managed to mangle my computer so that any time I attempt to use something that uses ptrace to trace another process (eg strace, gdb), I get an immediate segmentation fault. You can't do that without a process to debug. rpm -V comes up clean on strace, gdb, and glibc. I do not have any LD_* variables set, and PATH has nothing special in it.

• IIS 7 + Tomcat 7 - how to reach http://localhost:8080/my_app under e.g. http://my_app.local

  In brief: IIS 7 + Apache Tomcat 7 + isapi_redirect.dll: I have a deployed and working Tomcat-application available under http://localhost:8080/my_app. I would like to see the same content under http://my_app.local (and NOT the default Tomcat-site [which you can see below]). How can I do that? Longer explained: I have IIS 7 (7.5.7600.16385) and Apache Tomcat/7.0.22 installed. I deployed an application (let's call it "my_app") in Tomcat, which now can be reached at http://localhost:8080/my_app, works fine. I added a new web site in IIS panel with the path of the Tomcat deployed my_app, which looks like this: "c:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0\webapps\my_app" I binded the host name my_app.local. After that, I configured isapi_redirect.dll like this (or that). Now, when I open http://my_app.local, I can see the default Tomcat site (see below). BUT under http://my_app.local I would like to see the same content as under http://localhost:8080/my_app. How can I do that? • Performance: Nginx SSL slowness or just SSL slowness in general?

  I have an Amazon Web Services setup with an Apache instance behind Nginx with Nginx handling SSL and serving everything but the .php pages. In my ApacheBench tests I'm seeing this for my most expensive API call (which cache via Memcached): 100 concurrent calls to API call (http): 115ms (median) 260ms (max) 100 concurrent calls to API call (https): 6.1s (median) 11.9s (max) I've done a bit of research, disabled the most expensive SSL ciphers and enabled SSL caching (I know it doesn't help in this particular test.) Can you tell me why my SSL is taking so long? I've set up a massive EC2 server with 8CPUs and even applying consistent load to it only brings it up to 50% total CPU. I have 8 Nginx workers set and a bunch of Apache. Currently this whole setup is on one EC2 box but I plan to split it up and load balance it. There have been a few questions on this topic but none of those answers (disable expensive ciphers, cache ssl, seem to do anything.) • Can I format a Veritas cluster shared volume from windows?

  We have a Microsoft Failover Cluster with dynamic disks managed by Veritas Storage Foundation. Today the sysadmins added a new disk for SQL Server but the cluster size on the volume was wrong, so I issued a quick format to change it. The disk volume failed, the SQL Server group failed as well and the cluster became unresponsive. After some minutes I managed to fail over to a passive node. The SAN admins say it's my fault because I shouldn't have formatted the disk from the Windows format applet, but I should have used Veritas Enterprise Administrator instead. Can a format operation bring offline a whole cluster group this way? Relevant error messages: From the eventlog: The cluster resource host subsystem (RHS) stopped unexpectedly. An attempt will be made to restart it. This is usually due to a problem in a resource DLL. Please determine which resource DLL is causing the issue and report the problem to the resource vendor. From the cluster.log ERR [RCM] rcm::RcmResControl::DoResourceControl: ERROR_RESOURCE_CALL_TIMED_OUT(5910)' because of 'Control(STORAGE_GET_DISK_INFO_EX) to resource 'NameOfTheDiskGroup' timed out.' Veritas Documentation: Excerpt from Symantec's documentation: Note: Before manually creating the resource, you must format the cluster-shared volume with NTFS using the VEA GUI and mount it on the node where you are trying to create the resource. Does this mean the disk cannot be formatted from Windows? I don't read it that way. For the record, I formatted many disks using the Windows applet in the past and nothing bad happened.

  Having installed Team Foundation Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008, I need an easy URL for our developers to access their repositories. The default URL for the TFS repositories is http://localhost:8080/tfs Now I want the subdomain domain tfs.server.domain.com to point at http://localhost:8080/tfs. And when you write access tfs.server.domain.com/repos_name it should redirect to http://localhost:8080/tfs/repos_name. How can I do this in IIS 7? I already tried using the following rule, but it does not work. • Windows Domain Chaos - Any Solving Approach

  we are running an old Window 2003 Server as Domain Controller (DC2003). To safely migrate to Windows 2008 R2 we added a 2008 R2 (DC2008R2) to the domain as domain controller (adprep etc.). After dcpromo on DC2008R2 everything seemed to be ok. The new DC appeared under the "Domain Controlelrs" node. It wasn't checked at this time, if DC2008R2 can REALLY act as domain controller. Later we tried to shutdown DC2003 and ran into a total mess with non functional Exchange and Team Foundation Services. After that I got the job to fix... First i thought it could be an Problem with DC2008R2. So I removed it as Domain Controller and installed a new Windows 2008 R8 Server DC2008R2-2. I ran into similar Problems. I tried a bunch of stuff, but nothign helped. I won't list it, maybe I made an mistake, so I'm willing to redo it with your suggestions. To have a starting point I tried the best practise analyser whicht ended up with 24 "Compatible" and 26 "Not Compatible" tests. From these 26 tests 19 read the same. (I'm translating from german, so that may to be the exact wording) Problem: Using the Best Practise Analyser for Active Directory Domain Services (Active Directory Domain Services Best Practices Analyzer, AD DS BPA) no data can be be gathered using the name of the forest and the domain controller DC2008R2-2. I appreciate any suggestions, this really bothers me.

  I asked a related question about uname before, now want to ask from another angle because the following simple yet obvious conflicting outputs may mean there is something many people did not think of (me included). And I have rebooted multiple times after freebsd-update. And the system is not in jail etc, just the only system on that computer.

(tentative – I'll wait until things stabilize as this area is undergoing a pre-Cambrian explosion) Things I don’t want to work with: (but will if I'm asked to !) C# – same old, same old – not learning anything new here Old code – blech ! Environment with code & fix mentality , ad hoc requirements, excessive overtime Pc support, System administration – even after 20 years, people still ask you to do this sometimes ! debugging – my skills are just not there yet Oracle Old tech: VB 6, XSLT, WinForms, Net 3.51 or less Old style Web dev Information Systems: ASP.NET webforms, Reporting services / crystal reports, SQL Server CRUD with manual data layer, XAML MVVM – variations of the same concept, ad nauseaum. Low barriers of entry –> race to the bottom.  Metro – an elegant API coupled to a horrendous UX – I'll wait for market penetration viability before investing further in this.   Conclusion So if you are in a slump, take heart: Programming is a great career choice compared to every other job !

• Seperation of project responsibilities in new project

  We have very recently started a new project (MVC 3.0) and some of our early discussion has been around how the work and development will be split amongst the team members to ensure we get the least amount of overlap of work and so help make it a bit easier for each developer to get on and do their work. The project is expected to take about 6 months - 1 year (although not all developers are likely to be on and might filter off towards the end), Our team is going to be small so this will help out a bit I believe. The team will essentially consist of: 3 x developers (1 a slightly more experienced and will be the lead) 1 x project manager / product owner / tester An external company responsbile for doing our design work General project/development decisions so far have included: Develop in an Agile way using SCRUM techniques (We are still very much learning this approach as a company) Use MVVM archectecture Use Ninject and DI where possible Attempt to use as TDD as much as possible to drive development. Keep our controllers as skinny as possible Keep our views as simple as possible During our discussions two approaches have been broached as too how to seperate the workload given our objectives outlined above. OPTION 1: A framework seperation where each person is responsible for conceptual areas with overlap and discussion primarily in the integration areas. The integration areas would the responsibily of both developers as required. View prototypes (**Graphic designer**) | - Mockups | Views (Razor and view helpers etc) & Javascript (**Developer 1**) | - View models (Integration point) | Controllers and Application logic (**Developer 2**) | - Models (Integration point) | Domain model and persistence (**Developer 3**) PROS: Integration points are quite clear and so developers can work without dependencies on others fairly easily Code practices such as naming conventions and style is more easily managed in regards to consistancy as primarily only one developer will be handling an area CONS: Completion of an entire feature becomes a bit grey as no single person is responsible for an entire feature (story?) A person might not have a full appreciation for all areas of the project and so code overlap might be lacking if suddenly that person left. OPTION 2: A more task orientated approach where each person is responsible for the completion of the entire task from view - controller - model. PROS: A person is responsible for one entire feature so it's "complete" state can be clearly defined Code overlap into different areas will occur so each individual has good coverage over the entire application CONS: Overlap of development will occur in all the modules and developers can develop/extend without a true understanding of what the original code owner was intending. This could potentially lead more easily to code bloat? Following a convention might be harder as developers are adding to all areas of the project If a developer sets up a way of doing things would it be harder to enforce the other developers to follow that convention or even build on it (or even discuss it?). Dunno.. Bugs could more easily be introduced into areas not thought about by the developer It's easier to possibly to carry a team member in so far as one member just hacks code together to complete a task whilst another takes time to build a foundation that could be used by others and so help make future tasks easier i.e. starts building a framework? QUESTION: As it might appear I'm more in favor of option 1, however I'm interested to see how others might have approached this or what is the standard or best or preferred way of undertaking a project. Or indeed any different approach to handling this?

Kinductor – This is a great application for just learning how to use the Kinect SDK. The project uses MVVM Light and is a great start for those looking how to structure their first Kinect Application. Conclusion: Things are already getting easier for those working with the Kinect SDK. I imagine that after a few more months we will see the SDK go out of beta and allow commercial applications to run using it. • Silverlight nested RadGridView SelectedItem DataContext

  Hi, I'm developing a Silverlight 4 app and am using the 2010 Q1 release 1 RadGridView. I'm developing this app using the MVVM pattern and trying to keep my codebehind to a minimum. On my View I have a RadGridView and this binds to a property on my ViewModel. I am setting a property via the SelectedItem. I have a nested RadGridView and I want to set a property on my ViewModel to the SelectedItem but I cannot. I think the DataContext of my nested grid is the element in the parent's bound collection, rather than my ViewModel. I can easily use codebehind to set my ViewModel property from the SelectionChanged event on the nested grid, but I'd rather not do this. I have tried to use my viewModelName in the ElementName in my nested grid to specify that for SelectedItem, the ViewModel is the DataContext, but I cannot get this to work. Any ideas?
