• Learning by doing (and programming by trial and error)

  How do you learn a new platform/toolkit while producing working code and keeping your codebase clean? When I know what I can do with the underlying platform and toolkit, I usually do this: I create a new branch (with GIT, in my case) I write a few unit tests (with JUnit, for example) I write my code until it passes my tests So far, so good. The problem is that very often I do not know what I can do with the toolkit because it is brand new to me. I work as a consulant so I cannot have my preferred language/platform/toolkit. I have to cope with whatever the customer uses for the task at hand. Most often, I have to deal (often in a hurry) with a large toolkit that I know very little so I'm forced to "learn by doing" (actually, programming by "trial and error") and this makes me anxious. Please note that, at some point in the learning process, usually I already have: read one or more five-stars books followed one or more web tutorials (writing working code a line at a time) created a couple of small experimental projects with my IDE (IntelliJ IDEA, at the moment. I use Eclipse, Netbeans and others, as well.) Despite all my efforts, at this point usually I can just have a coarse understanding of the platform/toolkit I have to use. I cannot yet grasp each and every detail. This means that each and every new feature that involves some data preparation and some non-trivial algorithm is a pain to implement and requires a lot of trial-and-error. Unfortunately, working by trial-and-error is neither safe nor easy. Actually, this is the phase that makes me most anxious: experimenting with a new toolkit while producing working code and keeping my codebase clean. Usually, at this stage I cannot use the Eclipse Scrapbook because the code I have to write is already too large and complex for this small tool. In the same way, I cannot use any more an indipendent small project for my experiments because I need to try the new code in place. I can just write my code in place and rely on GIT for a safe bail-out. This makes me anxious because this kind of intertwined, half-ripe code can rapidly become incredibly hard to manage. How do you face this phase of the development process? How do you learn-by-doing without making a mess of your codebase? Any tips&tricks, best practice or something like that?

• Why is parsing a jSON response to a jQUERY ajax request not working

  I know there are several similar questions on SO, I have used some of them to get this far. I am trying to list a set of urls that match my input values. I have a servlet which takes some input e.g. "aus" in the example below and returns some output using out.print() e.g. the two urls I have shown below. EXAMPLE Input: "aus" Output: [{"url":"http://dbpedia.org/resource/Stifel_Nicolaus"},{"url":"http://sempedia.org/ontology/object/Australia"}] Which is exactly what I want. I have seen that firebug doesn't seem to have anything in the response section despite having called out.print(jsonString); and it seems that out.print(jsonString); is working as expected which suggests that the variable 'jsonString' contains the expected values. • apache2 server returns (400) syntax error

  There are 900 paths in the googles index to our homepage containing illegal characters. Example: http://www.seriesam.com/filmaffisch/TC%4NK Note the character "%4N". I have no idea where they come from, but would like to update google index with a correct URL using "canonical" in the html code. But the problem is our apache2 server immediately sends a 400 error if you click the link above. How can I configure apache2 not to give an error code, but instead treat the link above as "correct"? Maybe replacing the char %4N with nothing.

• Alternative to | more to display error results page by page

  The command psql -d template_postgis2 -f /usr/share/postgresql/9.1/contrib/postgis-2.1/postgis.sql returns a list of errors that is too long to be displayed by scrolling up to the beginning of the error. I tried the same command with "| more" and "| less" added up at the end of the command but it does not display the message page by page as it should. I also tried to put the output in a file with "> file.txt" but I do not get in this new file what is displayed on the screen!! I don't understand why. I guess i can't do this with a psql command?? Is there any other way to get all the error message? Thanks for your help!

• C++ option/long option implementation

  I am working on a parser for meta programming language using C++ on Linux platform. Right now, I need to implement option/long option for the parser to provide some additional features. Basically, if the user pass in some additional option, the parser needs to store statistics while parsing the text files. I can think of two ways to implement it. One way is to user global to store options entered by users. Another way is to create a singleton class to store options. So I would like to know if there is any other way to implement it. • Nokogiri Not Parsing File

  I'm using Nokogiri to parse pepXML files from different peptide search engines. I have two pepXML files, both of which appear, inasmuch as I can tell, to be of correct format, and puts Nokogiri::XML(IO.read(file)) will output the whole XML file for both files. The problem is, doc.xpath("any valid xpath") will parse the tag from one of the files, but not the other. No errors are given, so I have no idea why it won't parse. Anyone know of any reasons why Nokogiri wouldn't parse something out?

• jQuery .getJSON() Not Parsing All Objects

  I'm using jQuery's .getJSON function to parse a set of search results from a Google Search Appliance. The search appliance has an xslt stylesheet that returns the results as JSON data, which I validated with both JSONLint and Curious Concept's JSON Formatter. According to FireBug, the full result set is returned from the XMLHTTPRequest, but I tried dumping the data (with jquery.dump.js) and it only ever parses back the first result. It does successfully get all the Google Search Protocol stuff, but it only ever sees one "R" object (or individual result). Has anybody had a similar problem with jQuery's .getJSON? I know it likes to fail silently if the JSON is not valid, but like I said, I validated the results with several validators and it should be good to go. It need to return as error message back to php. The stored procedure should return as abc,def,xyz are duplicate. I tried something like this. This will not work it has more than 1 set of duplicate records. • Having trouble parsing XML with jQuery

  Hi Guys, I'm trying to parse some XML data using jQuery, and as it stands I have extracted the 'ID' attribute of the required nodes and stored them in an array, and now I want to run a loop for each array member and eventually grab more attributes from the notes specific to each ID. The problem currently is that once I get to the 'for' loop, it isn't looping, and I think I may have written the xml path data incorrectly. It runs once and I recieve the 'alert(arrayIds.length);' only once, and it only loops the correct amount of times if I remove the subsequent xml path code. • Problem with ubuntu 10.10 running from USB drive

  Hi Geeks, I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and created an USB drive with that. I started to run the Ubuntu from that USB drive. But I am facing so much problem. I am thinking why its not so much easy like Windows to do all my job in ubuntu. Always I get some error message or to install something. This time I am getting the following errors. I am trying to download and install Aircrack-ng. So used the command sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng. But the installation stops with the following error : update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated) cp: cannot stat `/vmlinuz': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing bcmwl-kernel-source (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: initramfs-tools bcmwl-kernel-source E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I don't even have the aptitude command installed till now. Are all these errors because of I am running the ubuntu from USB drive? Is there any simple and easy way to go to Ubuntu Software Center and download all the required essentials at one shot and then Aircrack-ng? I could not find the Aircrack-ng in Ubuntu Software Center Can anybody give me detail steps to solve all my problems above. I am frustrated searching for updates and installations. When something works and something does not work. Can anybody suggest me how I should proceed after installing ubuntu to run on a USB drive. So that I can use the OS like Windows. Like software download,wireless driver, sound, video, documents, C:, D: all things should be there. Please somebody help.

• ROOT_MISMATCH error after following FAQ directions

  While using Ubuntu One in 11.04 I am unable to change my account info. When I made the switch to 11.04 I forgot that I already had an Ubuntu One account so, I made a new one. However, upon going through one of my email accounts I found my old Ubuntu One login information. I then attempted to switch the account associated with my desktop to my first email. Now, despite following the directions found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/WhatToDoWhenSyncdaemonSaysRootMismatch I continue to get the error "File sync error. (local and server roots are different (ROOT_MISMATCH))". Any help would be appreciated.

  A few weeks ago (newbie alert!) I started using XUbuntu 12.04 with Xfce 4.8. I'm trying to install gPodder Podcast Client (see https://launchpad.net/~thp/+archive/gpodder). I've added the PPA via terminal commands as instructed. When I click the Install button in the Ubuntu Software Centre I get the following error: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. Just to make thing more complicated -- I'm not sure, but before I found the launchpad.net link, I think I may have tried to install gPodder from the default Ubuntu repositories (also unsuccessfully). There may be remnants of the previous attempt still installed, which may be blocking the new install. Where/how can I find them?

• Parsing CSV File to MySQL DB in PHP

  I have a some 350-lined CSV File with all sorts of vendors that fall into Clothes, Tools, Entertainment, etc.. categories. '</td><td><a href="http://www.' . $web .'" target="_blank">' .$web.'</a></td><td>'.$phone.'</td><td>'.$kw.'</td><td>'.$desc.'</td>' ; echo '</td></tr>'; } fclose($file_handle); show_source(__FILE__); ?> First thing you will probably notice is the extraneous vars within the list(). this is because of how the excel spreadsheet/csv file: Category,,Company Name,,Website,,Phone,,Keywords,,Description ,,,,,,,,,, Clothes,,4imprint,,4imprint.com,,877-466-7746,,"polos, jackets, coats, workwear, sweatshirts, hoodies, long sleeve, pullovers, t-shirts, tees, tshirts,",,An embroidery and apparel company based in Wisconsin. ,,Apollo Embroidery,,apolloemb.com,,1-800-982-2146,,"hats, caps, headwear, bags, totes, backpacks, blankets, embroidery",,An embroidery sales company based in California. One thing to note is that the last line starts with two commas as it is also listed within "Clothes" category. My concern is that I am going about the CSV output wrong. Should I be using a foreach loop instead of this list way? Should I first get rid of any unnecessary blank columns? Please advise any flaws you may find, improvements I can use so I can be ready to import this data to a MySQL DB.
