• Determining where a file is being cached

  I've got a debian webserver running apache, from which I regularly download an executable using IE 8 on an XP virtual machine (over LAN). However, I realised that somewhere along the line that I've been repeatedly running the same version (and wondering why my changes weren't being displayed). A Ctrl+F5 in IE will let me download the new version (although the page is always updated with a simple F5). This makes me suspect that the caching is happening in windows/IE, but I'm not certain. Wherever it's happening, is there an easy way to prevent it at the server? Eventually, we're hoping to offer the software to the entire company, and we'd like to avoid having to tell everyone to do a Ctrl+F5 every time there's an updated version.

  So recently my computer started turning my screen monitors off after a while without activity, if I move the mouse or hit the keyboard they turn back on. I just want them to stay on. My System is windows 8.1 64 bit, I have 2 screens with mini display port and 1 television with hdmi which often is in regular television mode when this issue happens. • Mysql process goes over 100% of CPU usage

  Hello! I'm experiencing some problems with my LAMP server. Recently, everything became very slow, even though visitor count on my websites didn't change to much. When I run top command, it sais that mysql process has taken over 150-200% of CPU. How's that possible, I always thought that 100% is a maximum? • Iptables to lock down compromised server to a single ip

  I have a Linux server which is compromised, I can see nasty looking perl scripts executing with root privileges. I want to get some data off it before I wipe it. How can I block all inbound and outbound traffic except for my ip? It's a Centos server I assume i can do this with iptables? I'm aware a the server is rooted there is a possibility that attackers could have made changes on the server that would prevent this from working. Ill be testing to make sure and only have the server online for a couple of hours before it is nuked.

• Ubuntu Volume overriding settings set in Alsamixer

  Problem: How do I "lock in" the volume I set through alsamixer? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I adjusted the bass/treble columns in alsamixer but changing the system volume resets them all back to 100% I did save the settings by running alsactl store but everything is reset once I touch Ubuntu's volume icon in the top menu bar. This is rather painful because the computer is hooked up to a 650watt system with a massive subwoofer. As much as I enjoy my music, there's no need to have the walls vibrate :) What can I do to prevent Ubuntu from overriding the settings?

• How to schedule download of windows 7 updates?

  To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button. So again, how can I schedule windows updates to start/stop at specified times?

Why does the task manager icon sometimes not show up? How can I repair it when this happens (how can make it show up when it's missing)? • Can I Store MediaWiki Files on the cloud?

  I recently got a chromebook, and I've been brainstorming different ways to put mediawiki on it (with localhost, not a server). One way I've read about online is to go into developer mode to download and set up LAMP. I was wondering, wouldn't I be able to store the apache, mysql, php, and mediawiki files on the cloud (google drive)? And if so, would anything prevent me from accessing my wiki on any other computer's localhost, assuming I could just log into Google Drive to access these files? Might there be any reduced performance when operating from the cloud?

• Windows/global setting to allow only SSL when on public Wifi?

  Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL? I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers. The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down. When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web. If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

I have created a zone file for example.com which contains: @ A 1.2.3.4 * A 1.2.3.4 However I am also setting up my local DNS, local.example.com which I have created a separate zone file for containing the following: machine1 A 192.168.0.1 machine2 A 192.168.0.2 When I dig machine1.local.example.com it returns A record 192.168.0.1, great. Sadly, badmachine.local.example.com returns 1.2.3.4, as does local.example.com. I'm not sure of the best way to prevent this. If I add the following to the local.example.com empty A records are returned for the above 2 examples as is the behaviour I desire: @ A * A Is this allowed? Is this best practice, or am I doing things terribly wrong? I'm using PowerDNS with BIND backend. Thanks for your thoughts!

• Stop Metro on W8 from minimizing on dual screens

  I'm running Windows 8 with two screens, and have set it so that I have Metro on my secondary screen, because I thought that I could have that visible while I was working on other things on the main screen. The problem is, as soon as I click on something on the main screen, Metro goes away on my secondary screen. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?? I would like to be able to see f.ex the clock, notifications on mail/messaging etc. while I'm working on things.

Technicians should be able to write in the document but if they try to save it, it should prevent them from doing so. How is this possible.   I install the same printer several times to allow easy selection for users. They just choose the desired printer to have the corresponding functionnality (instead of going to printer properties and change them back and forth): one with double-sided printing, one for draft quality, one for upper tray, etc. On Windows 7, when I install a printer several times, the control panel's printers icons are merged. I then have only one icon for two or three identical printers. I can right-clic on the icon to display the usual menu, and some items of the menu have an arrow to access each printer. This is very missleading for users and admins. I have this behaviour on some computers, when others don't exhibit this. I didn't found what is the difference between computers with and without the problem. Anyone know how to prevent this ?

• Best Practice for upgrading PHP On Production Systems

  We Have two load balanced web servers running php 5.3. I've been asked by our dev team to upgrade php to 5.4 because they need certain functionality it will bring. The main issue is that 5.3 is the latest thats been built into the distros repository, so to upgrade using the package manager, Ill need to add another 3rd party repo. I dont have a problem with this per se, but Im concerned about using a package from a "non official" source. The other option is to compile php from source, but I guess this will prevent me from using the package manager to upgrade at any stage in the future? So I guess Im just looking for some guidance on which way to go. Compile from source or install from any old repo that purports to supply php 5.4? Or perhaps theres a third option I havent considered? Thanks in advance Demic

  I am kind of curious, how does a hosting server support multiple users with php but keep each user away from the other code? The 'easy' solution i thought were file permissions. So every user can have www-data belong to their group and the server would have executing access but the users cant access the others file. But then i realize the user running the php would be www-data who has permission to read everyones data. So how does a shared host prevent this from happening? PS: I personally use nginx (with fastcgi php). But i am somewhat familiar on how apache works.

• Can I create an Infrastructure access point from built-in WiFi (as opposed to Ad-Hoc) on Windows XP?

  I want to use my Windows XP laptop as an access point. What I am trying to achieve is possible under Windows 7 with a myriad of utilities, but the wireless driver stack was different before Windows 7 and those specific APIs don't exist on XP. The reason behind me wanting to do this is that I would like my Android phone to be able to connect via WiFi to a network that is only hard-wired (reverse tethering). Unfortunately, my Android device (Galaxy S Captivate) does not support ad-hoc networks without a serious amount of screwing around. Is it possible to create an "Infrastructure" network with my Dell Latitude D830's built-in WiFi - a "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Card", which I am assuming is probably rebadged Broadcom, or is there some fundamental difference between a wireless adapter and an access point that would prevent this?

• My wireless network slows down every 7.5 minutes when my desktop is switched on

  My network has lag spikes lasting for a few seconds every 7.5 mins. The spikes also effect any other computer connected connected to my wirless router at the time. My wife has to connect her laptop via a cable to prevent the lag causing problems when she's VPNing into her work. If I switch my PC off the problem goes away! I've got an Edimax 7728ln 802.11n wireless card and Speedtouch 585v7 (I'm with Be) I've Tried... Updated the drivers from Edimax website: 2.0.3.0 (it does say 3.0.2.0 in devices properties though) WLAN Optimizer doesn't seem to be helping What can I do?

  I have been doing some extensive seeking in our SonicWall TZ-215 for the source(s) of unnecessary internet traffic, as we have issues with excessive traffic. As part of my research, I need to watch the Connections Monitor, which lists me all the current connections. This list becomes quite long, with 40+ devices on the network, it's tough to pinpoint the main causes.   Is there a simple way how I could redirect a visitor (via .htaccess or PHP script) to a static page when the server is overloaded from too many requests? It doesn't have to be a protection against huge amounts of requests at once or protect against DoS Attacks. I think our server would be protected enough if we could prevent the standard website to be shown and instead show a single file "overloaded.html". Also how could I get a measure for a server being overloaded on a typical managed server (= non root access to a Linux server) environment?

  I'm running itk as Apache MPM. In order to prevent error in case I need to change the MPM in the future, I set <IfModule itk.c> AssignUserID user group </IfModule> but I found that it gets ignored. In fact, if I add a WTF like and run rcapache2 configtest it returns me Syntax OK <IfModule itk.c> AssignUserID user group WTF ##doesn't throw error </IfModule> By the way, /etc/sysconfig/apache2 shows APACHE_MPM="itk" How do I check if I'm running itk or not?

• Force Chrome to open new pages in new window, not tab? (when opened from a program)

  Whenever I click a link from something like outlook or a program opens a web page (not when I click a link from within chrome). It opens up in Chrome since it is my default browser but if I already have a page open it will open in a new tab on that same window. I can't tell you how many times I forget about this and close the window out, accidentally losing the other tab too. Ofcourse, I can open a new chrome window and find it under recently closed tabs but I would really just prefer if they opened in their own window so I can prevent this.

  How do I prevent this? I thought it was due to my antivirus login protection (as can bee seen below) but I have now uninstalled it and the problem remains. Old question: Hi, i am using Rising Antivirus, free version. It has many advanced functionalities, including a "logon protection" that assures the protection of the password, or pre-logon protection. Unfortunately, that disables remote desktop connection until an user has logged on. (user log on, disconnect, then you can connect) I hate this behaviour, someone knows how to disable this function? (ok, i could create a limited user that autologons and then autodisconnects, but i don't like this approach)
