• How to prevent thunderbird gmail/IMAP from marking deleted/archived emails as read

  I have thunderbird setup to use gmail IMAP. I followed the various guides that recommend setting Edit-Account Settings-Server Settings-When I delete a message-Remove it immediately. Unfortunately this didn't have quite the effect I wanted and after more digging I discovered here that: [Thunderbird] [Gmail] Mark Deleted = Archive Copy to [Gmail]/Trash = Delete Permanently Remove it immediately = Archive Unfortunately whenever I deleted (archived) a message it was also marked as read whether it had been or not. I didn't want this because I like to keep my inbox clean and archive anything that doesn't actually matter, such as funny emails, etc. and then go back and look through the archive later when I have time. What settings do I need to prevent messages from being marked read when I delete them? I'm using Thunderbird 17.0 on Ubuntu 12.04

• I removed nvidia driver and lshw -c video still shows nvidia

  Today I tried to activate the newer experimental drivers and both 304 and 310 failed to even install. So I tried the regular nvidia driver 295.40 for the 20th time today (I had lag issues and was testing Nouveau vs Nvidia with dual monitor and Unity2D-3D) Within my tty1 I tried to remove nvidia: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-settings nvidia-current and purge too reboot, nothing. So when lshw -c video displayed nvidia as my driver I tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf since I read ubuntu would "reset" the GUI conf but reboot, nothing. So next I tried sudo jockey-text --disable=xorg:nvidia_current And nothing has worked...

• Sound is not working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this is my own fault. But what i did was this first i wrote this command 'sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio' and then i wrote again 'sudo apt-get install pulseaudio' and now the sound doesn't work properly And the Indicator doesn't work either, it's just grayed out. The shortcuts are not working either. • Can't get Broadcom 43142 drivers to work after installation on 5420 Inspiron

• Good library for search text tokenization

The language we are using is python, so would prefer a library in that language, but could probably set something up to use another language if necessary. • Keep Google Analytics in a backup site or not?

  I backed up my website and uploaded it to another server for testing and backup purposes. Should I remove the Google Analytics snippet from the index.php (which is for the real site), or does it not matter as it's not the same server and url address as the one declared at Google Analytics account? The reason I don't want to remove it is in case someone forgets about it if they upload the backup to the real site in case the real one breaks. Also I know that if I turn off the website there is no GA snippet, but I need it open so I can easily access and test it so I don't have to write pass all the time.

• Is it normal to these Xcode prompts/errors when you deploy to IOS Simulator from Unity?

  Just trying out the IOS build process.... Is it normal to see: Q1 - "upgrade to latest project format - project currently in Xcode 3.1 format, this will upgrade to 3.2" - just click OK and let Xcode do it's stuff? Q2 - same as Q1 but this time for the message "Remove obsolete build settings - will remove the build setting PREBINDING" Q3 - also when deploying to "Lastest IOS Simulator" you get the Simulator target produced, but also a non-simulator target which has lots of errors. So I assume you just ignore this target and not use it in Xcode correct? (i.e. just use the simulator target that is produced) Q4 - get a lot of warning after the simulator target is built? program works ok however.... • How to disable the auto resizing of Windows when you touch the top or bottom

  Can someone tell me how to stop the autoresizing behavior of Windows in Ubuntu 14.04 when you touch the top or bottom when resizing the window. There is an undesirable effect of the the bottom resizing all the way to the bottom when you only want to resize the top, or vice-versa. In the past it was possible to disable this effect by unchecking grid in CCSM. Then came Unity Tweak tool which made it easy to remove. You could remove it by turning off Window snapping and Hotcorners. Now in Ubuntu 14.04 I have all those feature turned off and yet I can't resize only the top or only the bottom without the other end automatically moving.

• How to use GCC 4.7 in place of 4.6 (Ubuntu 12.04)

  So I'm working on a project and I wanted to use some C11 features for C. To use those features GCC 4.7 is required, so I went to synaptic and looked up 4.7, and I found the packages gcc-4.7-base so I installed it[1]. So now that gcc-4.7-base is installed I expected to be able to use 4.7, but no, when I do gcc --version it still shows 4.6.3 even more, when I try to directly call 4.7(via /usr/bin/gcc-4.7) it doesn't exist, though a gcc-4.6 executable does exist. How do I "activate" GCC 4.7? I read here, you do some crazy stuff with update-alternatives, but it doesn't work for me as the gcc-4.7 executable doesn't actually exist on my machine. Notes: 1. I also saw gcc-4.6-base, so I figured I'd uninstall it, but synaptic attempted to remove every package I had installed and install a Java runtime, so for obvious reason I decided not to remove it.

• ubuntu 12.04 refuses to install with windows 7

  I have a desktop computer with windows 7 installed on it . Recently I downloaded ubuntu 12.04 and burned the iso image on a new blank DVD . After successfully burning DVD , I booted from the DVD. Ubutu interface appeared asking me to either choose try ubuntu or install ubuntu . I chose to install ubuntu. Again on next screen I choose to install ubuntu inside windows 7. After pressing continue button the following message appeared : " checking battery state .............. ok checking for running unattended upgrades : acpid : exiting speech dispatcher disabled ; edit /etc/default/ speech -dispatcher Asking all remaining processes to terminate ............. ok Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press enter : " Now the problem is that when I remove the installation media ( ie the DVD ) and press enter then instead of installing ubuntu the computer reboots into windows 7 !!! I am a newbie to ubuntu and therefore do not know much about it . What should I do?

  Welcome, My problem appeared today - I was using Xubuntu for a long time, but find out that LXDE should be faster than Xfce, so I installed it. After installing I followed tutorial for removing Xfce, cause disk in my computer is very small and I wanted to release some free space. I used command from this tutorial: How to remove xubuntu-desktop? but instead of remove I entered purge command… and rebooted at the end. And I uninstalled whole my things. The problem is in installing system again - it's old Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-GR250) and I have broken CD-DVD drive. It's possible to boot from USB? I can access recovery mode, will this help me? Please answer fast, because it's my brother computer, and his going to kill me if I won't fix this fast :(

• Several New Hints

  Hi all! Today we would like to introduce you some of our new experimental hints for NetBeans 7.2. They are called: Unused Use Statement and Immutable Variables. Unused Use Statement This hint is quite simple. It highlights (underlines) your use statements, which are not used. Typical use case is after some refactoring, when you forgot to remove some obsolete use statements. This hint warns you on them and allows you to remove them easily. Just click on the hint bulb in the gutter and select Remove Unused Use Statement. And of course, it works in multiple use statements combined too. Immutable Variables The next one is the hint which checks too many assignments into a variable. And why? That's simple. Mostly you should use just one assignment into one variable. But sometimes you are lazy and you do something like: But it's quite wrong, because what you really do is: And that's exactly the case, when our new hint warns you, that Too many assignments (2) into variable $foo occured. Nothing more. Yes, we know that there are some cases, where could be more assignments and no warning should occur, e.g.: Because maybe one likes longer increment syntax more than the short one. So we tried to handle these cases to don't bother you if it's not a need. Note: We are almost sure that this hint doesn't cover all your use cases, because there are a lot of them. So if you find something strange, write it into our bugzilla so we can handle it better for you. Thanks for your patience! And the last thing is, that you can set the number of allowed assignments in Tools -> Options -> Editor -> Hints -> PHP: Immutable Variables. Note: This hint works just for a common variables, not for fields. We have an enhancement request for that and it should be implemented in next version of NetBeans (probably 7.3). • Ping works , but unable to do ssh

  I disabled the firewall with sudo ufw disable, I can ping the server, the server can ping me but I can't ssh to it: root@ubuntu:/home/acme# ssh 192.168.1.6 ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.6 port 22: Connection refused I removed ssh and reinstalled : sudo apt-get remove openssh-client openssh-server sudo apt-get install openssh-client openssh-server But still ssh is not working and I get the error connection refused How do I tackle this issue? • Why does my program stutter so much?

  I've been very frustrated trying to solve this. I've looked it up, and all the answers are the same: set IsFixedTimeStep = false. This doesn't help me at all, the program is still jittery and stutters. I have absolutely no idea what is going on, can you guys help? • How to force a clock update using ntp?

  I am running Ubuntu on an ARM based embedded system that lacks a battery backed RTC. The wake-up time is somewhere during 1970. Thus, I use the NTP service to update the time to the current time. I added the following line to /etc/rc.local file: sudo ntpdate -s time.nist.gov However, after startup, it still takes a couple of minutes until the time is updated, during which period I cannot work effectively with tar and make. How can I force a clock update at any given time? UPDATE 1: The following (thanks to Eric and Stephan) works fine from command line, but fails to update the clock when put in /etc/rc.local: $ date ; sudo service ntp stop ; sudo ntpdate -s time.nist.gov ; sudo service ntp start ; date Thu Jan 1 00:00:58 UTC 1970 * Stopping NTP server ntpd [ OK ] * Starting NTP server [ OK ] Thu Feb 14 18:52:21 UTC 2013 What am I doing wrong? UPDATE 2: I tried following the few suggestions that came in response to the 1st update, but nothing seems to actually do the job as required. Here's what I tried: Replace the server to us.pool.ntp.org Use explicit paths to the programs Remove the ntp service altogether and leave just sudo ntpdate ... in rc.local Remove the sudo from the above command in rc.local Using the above, the machine still starts at 1970. However, when doing this from command line once logged in (via ssh), the clock gets updated as soon as I invoke ntpdate. Last thing I did was to remove that from rc.local and place a call to ntpdate in my .bashrc file. This does update the clock as expected, and I get the true current time once the command prompt is available. However, this means that if the machine is turned on and no user is logged in, then the time never gets updates. I can, of course, reinstall the ntp service so at least the clock is updated within a few minutes from startup, but then we're back at square 1. So, is there a reason why placing the ntpdate command in rc.local does not perform the required task, while doing so in .bashrc works fine?

  I migrated my WordPress blog to a new server, and everything seemed to be working fine until it started giving me the error when entering the admin area: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4864 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 729 The line 729 has: $protected = array( '_wp_attached_file', '_wp_attachment_metadata', '_wp_old_slug', '_wp_page_template' ); I had installed the maintenance-mode, and I have suspicions that this is what broke the forum. If I remove the plugin it then gives another error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 19456 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/post.php on line 1158 And that line has: $content .= '<p class="hide-if-no-js">' . esc_html__( 'Remove featured image' ) . '</p>'; } I tried to restore the blog file-system from the old server and also to restore the database from the old server (2x), but still it gives me the same error.   Most of the time running a gtk application from the command line it starts dumping debug information to the stdio even though I put them in background. • How does "rm" on a NTFS filesystem differs from Window's own implementation?

  I have an external USB disk with an NTFS filesystem on it. If I remove a file from Windows and I run one of the several "undelete" utilities (say, TestDisk) I can easily recover the file (because "it's still there but it's marked as deleted"). If I remove the file from Linux no utility (unless I use a deep-search signature-based one) can recover the file. Why? How is unlink implemented in Linux's NTFS file system code? It looks like it does not just "mark it as undeleted" but it wipes away some on-disk structure, is this the case?

• How to get rid of bookmarks in synced Chromium

  I'm using three Ubuntu systems in an irregular pattern, and since I use Chrome/Chromium anyway and have a Google account, I decided to make my life a bit easier and sync them. Now I am having a problem: When I want to remove bookmarks from my lists, they not only come back when I switch the machine, they double. By now, I have up to ten identical bookmarks in the list and I spend a lot of time scrolling over them. Is there any way to remove them permanently? EDIT: Apps, too.

• Change libcups to repository version

  I upgraded my libcups package to 1.6 in hopes to fix something but I just buggered things up more. So I want to reinstall it to the version on the repository (1.5.3 I think). I've tried to do a reinstall using ~#: apt-get install --reinstall libcups2 but that tells me it cannot be downloaded so refuses to upgrade. I can't just do: ~#: apt-get remove libcups2 ~#: apt-get install libcups2 as that wants to remove 299 packages along with it. Totaling 668MB so I am hesitant as that will probably take 6 hours to download on my connection.

• Auto completion (using the Tab key) on the new Ubuntu 11.10

  Earlier, when I used tab to auto-complete filenames (using the tab key) and if the filenames contained blank spaces or certain special characters, the name would be listed with backslashes '\' thrown in so that it could work with a preceding command like ls or rm. eg. Earlier if I had a file name called "The Four Seasons- Spring - Allegro.mp3" and this was the only file name starting with "The", when I typed "rm The" and Tab, it would complete itself to "rm The\ Four\ Seasons-\ Spring\ -\ Allegro.mp3" and I could subsequently press Enter and remove the file. However, lately what happens when I press Tab is the following: "rm The Four Seasons- Spring - Allegro.mp3" and if I now press Enter, it returns a bunch of errors because it thinks I want to remove a bunch of files (named The, Four, etc.). Does anyone else encounter the same problems and if yes, is there a good way to resolve this problem? Thanks!
