• Web service creates stack overflow

  I have an application that when executed as a windows application works fine, but when converted to a web service, in some instances (which were tested successfully) by the windows app) creates a stack overflow. Do you have an idea of what can cause this? (Note that it works fine when the web service is placed on the localhost). Could it be that the stack size of a Web Service is smaller than that of a Window Application? • Out of Memory - web applications

  Hi all, I am trying to figure out why Jetty 6.1.22 is running out of memory on my laptop. I have 2 web applications running JBoss Seam, Hibernate (with EHCache), and separate Quartz scheduler instances. With little load, the server dies throwing OutOfMemory. What can I look for? Would you think that I am not properly closing handles for input streams or files? I tried profiling my application with Netbeans, but it works off and on. Usually, it ends up locking up even though it doesn't use that much CPU or memory. Walter

• Base class for windows service

  My new project has a design in which there are number windows services for performing different tasks. I have been given a task to create base class from which all of the windows service will inherit. This base class will perform common functions like creating instances of other windows services by iterating through the config file (may be like Activator.CreateInstance), do event logging on onStart, onStop etc. and may contain some more functionality. Before I start developing stuff, wondering if there is any pattern already in place or someone has good understanding of how to implement this kind of functionality. Any help appreciated.

  I need a macro to look at the list of data below, provide a number of instances it appears and sum the value of each of them. I know a pivot table or series of forumlas could work but i'm doing this for a coworker and it has to be a 'one click here' kinda deal. The data is as follows. • Are web-safe colors still relevant?

  Since the vast majority of monitors are 16-bit color or more, including mobile devices, does it make sense to even consider web-safe colors when choosing color schemes? Or is it something that ought to be relegated to history as a piece of trivia? For those of you that don't know what web-safe colors are: Another set of 216 color values is commonly considered to be the "web-safe" color palette, developed at a time when many computer displays were only capable of displaying 256 colors. A set of colors was needed that could be shown without dithering on 256-color displays; the number 216 was chosen partly because computer operating systems customarily reserved sixteen to twenty colors for their own use; it was also selected because it allows exactly six shades each of red, green, and blue (6 × 6 × 6 = 216). The list of colors is often presented as if it has special properties that render them immune to dithering. In fact, on 256-color displays applications can set a palette of any selection of colors that they choose, dithering the rest. • F# and .Net versions

  I'm writing a program in F# at the moment, which I specified in the Visual Studio project setup to target .Net 3.5, this being the highest offered, on the theory that I might as well get the best available. Then I tried just now running the compiled program on an XP box, not expecting it to work, but just to see what would happen. Unsurprisingly I just got an error message demanding an appropriate version of the framework, but surprisingly it wasn't 3.5 it demanded, but 2.0.50727. An additional puzzle is the version of MSBuild I'm using to compile the release version of the program, which I found in the framework 3.5 directory but claims to be framework 2.0 and build engine 3.5. I just guessed it was the right version of MSBuild to use because it seemed to correspond with the highest framework version F# seems to be able to target, but should I be using a different version? Anyone have any idea what's going on? • JW Player: cross-browser "display:none" player behavior

  Is there a simple, upfront method to have FF and IE treat hidden JW Players the same? I am placing different instances of the player dynamically in jQuery generated tabs. In effect, switching tabs hides the parent div of each player. In FireFox, the tab switch and accompanying "display" change stops the player. This doesn't happen in IE. I would like it to. What is the easiest way to have both browsers act the same? I am hoping for a CSS/HTML solution, either thorough the way the players are embedded or a style rule Otherwise I suppose I will need to add an item listener that compares the currently selected tab id to currently active players... but I'd rather not go that route. Thanks for your tips! EDIT: So, I'd rather be able to change the player CSS or markup on tab change than send stop events to all the players but the player in the currently active tab.

• How to determine whether a dependency object implements a given dependency property (C# / WPF)

  I am working with the classes in the System.Windows.Documents namespace, trying to write some generic code that will conditionally set the value of certain dependency properties, depending on whether these properties exist on a given class. For example, the following method assigns an arbitrary value to the Padding property of the passed FrameworkContentElement: void SetElementPadding(FrameworkContentElement element) { element.SetValue(Block.PaddingProperty, new Thickness(155d)); } However, not all concrete implementations of FrameworkContentElement have a Padding property (Paragraph does but Span does not) so I would expect the property assignment to succeed for types that implement this property and to be silently ignored for types that do not. But it seems that the above property assignment succeeds for instances of all derivatives of FrameworkContentElement, regardless of whether they implement the Padding property. I make this assumption because I have always been able to read back the assigned value. I assume there is some flaw in the way I am assigning property values. What should I do to ensure that a given dependency property assignment is ignored by classes that do not implement that property? Many thanks for your advice. Tim

• Performance of DrawingVisual vs Canvas.OnRender for lots of constantly changing shapes

  I'm working on a game-like app which has up to a thousand shapes (ellipses and lines) that constantly change at 60fps. Having read an excellent article on rendering many moving shapes, I implemented this using a custom Canvas descendant that overrides OnRender to do the drawing via a DrawingContext. The performance is quite reasonable, although the CPU usage stays high. However, the article suggests that the most efficient approach for constantly moving shapes is to use lots of DrawingVisual instances instead of OnRender. Unfortunately though it doesn't explain why that should be faster for this scenario. Changing the implementation in this way is not a small effort, so I'd like to understand the reasons and whether they are applicable to me before deciding to make the switch. Why could the DrawingVisual approach result in lower CPU usage than the OnRender approach in this scenario?

  I am writing some server-side scripts using jscript and WSH. The scripts are getting quite long, and some common functions and variables would fit better in a general library script which I included in my various script instances. But, I cannot find a way reference one JScript file from another. For a moment, I though reading the file contents and passing it to "eval()" could work. But, as it says on MSDN: "Note that new variables or types defined in the eval statement are not visible to the enclosing program."   My co-worker and I have come across this warning message a couple times recently. For the below code: package com.mycompany.product.data; import com.mycompany.product.dao.GenericDAO; public abstract class EntityBean { public abstract GenericDAO<Object, Long> getDAO(); // ^^^^^^ <-- WARNING OCCURS HERE } the warning appears in the listed spot as EntityBean.getDAO() has non-API return type GenericDAO<T, ID> A Google search for "has non-API return type" only shows instances where this message appears in problem lists. I.e., there's no public explanation for it. What does this mean? We can create a usage problem filter in Eclipse to make the message go away, but we don't want to do this if our usage is a legitimate problem. Thanks!

  Hi I have following setup index.html with <div id="container"</div using anchor method I load different html content into this container. My content contains div for modal dialog "dialog-form" and I initialise it with the custom function from the javascript included in index.html on successful ajax load using callback $.get("callback.php",query, function(data){ $("#container").html(data); initPos(); // here we run javascript to initialise modal dialog }); Everything is ok until user click other menu (we load different content) and after that again clicks menu with this modal dialog, so page loads again, we call script again (everything is ok yet), dialog opens, information from the dialog is submitted to server and on sucessful sumbit I want to close the dialog with ('#dialog-form').dialog('close');it worked first time, but no longer works because we initialised this dialog twice and using Firebug I can see two different instances of modal dialog with the same name. So, what is the right way to do the thing? Is there any way to close multiple dialogs with the same name or maybe we can kill all closed modal dialogs when user clicks different menu?

  When I type... Msbuild<Enter> ... At the command prompt, I get... This is all very well and good except that when I run this against a vs2010 .sln file, the error message indicates: MyProject.sln(2): Solution file error MSB5014: File format version is not recognized. MSBuild can only read solution files between versions 7.0 and 9.0, inclusive. 0 Warning(s) 1 Error(s) It would appear that the version of msbuild that is being called, is not capable of understanding my solution file. I figured that I would check out my path and see where msbuild is being picked up from. However, it seems that no part of my path points at a location where msbuild is to be found. How is the command line finding the copy of msbuild that it is using and how can I change this version so that the latest version is used?

All rights reserved. So I know I have the path at least set somewhere. I can run that class from command line and it works. But when I run it using eclipse I get the following error: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "gs": error=2, No such file or directory at java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(ProcessBuilder.java:459) at java.lang.Runtime.exec(Runtime.java:593) at java.lang.Runtime.exec(Runtime.java:431) at java.lang.Runtime.exec(Runtime.java:328) at clris.batchdownloader.TestJDBC.main(TestJDBC.java:17) Caused by: java.io.IOException: error=2, No such file or directory at java.lang.UNIXProcess.forkAndExec(Native Method) at java.lang.UNIXProcess.(UNIXProcess.java:53) at java.lang.ProcessImpl.start(ProcessImpl.java:91) at java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(ProcessBuilder.java:452) ... 4 more In my program, i can replace "gs" with: "java", "mvn", "svn" and it works. But "gs" does not. It's only in eclipse I have this problem. Any ideas, on what I need to do to resolve this issue?

  Let's say I have a Model, for example User, and I want to merge two instances of this Model, say merge User2 into User1. Explicitly this is what I mean: If a field is already filled in User1, it should remain the same If a field is missing in User1 but is present in User2, it should be copied If SomeModel BelongsTo User, every instance of SomeModel pointing to User2 should be modified to point to User1 Same if SomeModel HasAndBelongsToMany User If SomeModel HasMany User, and SomeModel1 Has User2 but no other instance Has User1, it should be modified so that SomeModel1 has User1 instead If SomeModel HasMany User, SomeModel1 Has User1 and SomeModel2 Has User2... well, I'm not sure here, I guess the only solution is to discard SomeModel2, since User1 can BelongTo only one SomeModel. Finally User2 should be removed. Is there a way to automate this? Maybe a Behaviour? If not, I may consider creating it, since I will need it a lot.

• CFNetwork / NSURLConnection leak

  Running instruments on the device, I intermittently incur a memory leak of exactly 3.5 KB in CFNetwork, the responsible frame being "HostLookup_Master::HostLookup...." I have read a number of questions re this issue and have separately tried the following to fix the leak: Included the following in applicationDidFinishLaunching: NSURLCache *sharedCache = [[NSURLCache alloc] initWithMemoryCapacity:0 diskCapacity:0 diskPath:nil]; [NSURLCache setSharedURLCache:sharedCache]; [sharedCache release]; Specified in the urlrequest not to load from the local cache. None of the above worked. My class that instantiates the connections does not leak as its instances are released when data has been downloaded. I have verified this by confirming the the living objects of the class is 0 using Instruments. Any advice on addressing this leak would be greatly appreciated.

• How do you develop Visual Studio Add-Ins?

  I have a vague idea Visual Studio allows you to run a second sandboxed instance where the add-in is being in fact loaded. That'd allow you to debug your add-in code and such. Is this effectively possible? How would I go about doing that? I'm currently using a single instance of Visual Studio. I'm having the problem that as I load and run the add-in, it won't allow me to compile again until I restart that instance of Visual Studio as there seems to be no way to unload the add-in. Even using two instances of Visual Studio wouldn't really help in here. There must be an easier way, how do you guys do it? Thanks

• iPhone OS: Fetching a random entity instance using NSPredicate Nsfetchrequest and core data

  Working on an app where I have a large collections of managed objects against which I want to fetch a few random instances. My question is, is there any way I can use NSPredicate and NSFetchRequest to return several objects at random. I saw that you could actually add a NSFetchRequest into the entity using the data modeler, any way to do the random fetch using this? Also what would be the best method for determining the "count" of a table so I can set the bounds of the random number generator. let me know if you need more details. Thanks! Nick

  I have a multi-user software solution (containing different applications, i.e. EXEs) that should allow only a limited number of concurrent users. It's designed to run in an intranet. I dont have a really good, satisfactory solution to the problem of counting the client licenses yet. The key requirements are: Multiple instances (starts) of the same application (= process) should count as only one client licence Starting different applications of the software solution should also count as only one (the same) client licence Application crash should not lead to orphaned used licences The above should work also for Terminal Server environments (all clients same IP, but different install folders) I'm looking for estabilished patterns, solutions, tips for managing used client licenses. Specific hints for the above sitaution are also welcome.

• Django IN query as a string result - invalid literal for int() with base 10

  Trying to query a 'Favorites' model to get a list of items a user has favorited, and then querying against a different model to get the objects back from that query to present to the template, but I'm getting an error: "invalid literal for int() with base 10" Looking over all of the other instances of that error, I couldn't find any in which the asker actually wanted to work with a comma separated list of integers, so I'm kind of at a loss.
