  My webapp is trowing these exceptions intermitently ever since we migrated to Mono + Apache: The error sounds more like a problem reading/processing some assembly, so I was wondering if I should be worried that there might be a problem with the hard-drive? • ASP.NET MVC intermittent slow response

  Problem In our production environment, system occasionally delays the page response of an ASP.NET MVC application up to 30 seconds or so, even though same page renders in 2-3 seconds most of the times. This happens randomly with any arbitrary page, and GET or POST type requests. For example, log files indicates, system took 15 seconds to complete a request for jquery script file or for other small css file it took 10 secs. Similar Problems: Random Slow Downs Production Environment: Windows Server 2008 - Standard (32-bit) - App Pool running in integrated mode. ASP.NET MVC 1.0 We have tried followings/observations: Moved the application to a stand alone web server, but, it didn't help. We didn't ever notice same issue on the server for any 'ASP.NET' application. App Pool settings are fine. No abrupt recycles/shutdowns. No cpu spikes or memory problems. No delays due to SQL queries or so. It seems as something causing delay along HTTP Pipeline or worker processor seeing the request late. Looking for other suggestions. -- Thanks

• Avoiding GC thrashing with WSE 3.0 MTOM service

  For historical reasons, I have some WSE 3.0 web services that I cannot upgrade to WCF on the server side yet (it is also a substantial amount of work to do so). These web services are being used for file transfers from client to server, using MTOM encoding. This can also not be changed in the short term, for reasons of compatibility. Secondly, they are being called from both Java and .NET, and therefore need to be cross-platform, hence MTOM. How it works is that an "upload" WebMethod is called by the client, sending up a chunk of data at a time, since files being transferred could potentially be gigabytes in size. However, due to not being able to control parts of the stack before the WebMethod is invoked, I cannot control the memory usage patterns of the web service. The problem I am running into is for file sizes from 50MB or so onwards, performance is absolutely killed because of GC, since it appears that WSE 3.0 buffers each chunk received from the client in a new byte[] array, and by the time we've done 50MB we're spending 20-30% of time doing GC. I've played with various chunk sizes, from 16k to 2MB, with no real great difference in results. Smaller chunks are killed by the latency involved with round-tripping, and larger chunks just postpone the slowdown until GC kicks in. Any bright ideas on cutting down on the garbage created by WSE? Can I plug into the pipeline somehow and jury-rig something that has access to the client's request stream and streams it to the WebMethod? I'm aware that it is possible to "stream" responses to the client using WSE (albeit very ugly), but this problem is with requests from the client.

  Hello, I want to develop a POS application in .NET (C#) that would be used to rent items. I have a good idea of what will be done and the famous question that I have is about the DBMS that I should use. I would like to use MySQL database. The question is: If some places use only one computer (no network, no internet connection), can I use a MySQL database in local? Do I need to install MySQL server on all thoses computers to be able to use such a database? I know SQLite but I'm not sure if the limitations can cause problems in the future... I also looked at SQLServer Express versions. (I must consider that other point of sales are using multiple computers and more transactions so there I can't put sqlexpress or sqlite) So can anybody suggest me what I should do in that situation? • Centralized Credentials Service For Various Apps

  We are researching the possibility to build a centralized credentials storage for internal applications. These apps (vb6, vb.net, web apps in asp.net, etc) are using various instances of SQL servers and iSeries. We want to implement a central credentials facility that would act as a security broker. Basically it should work like this: Client app supplies AppID (I am Sales Application) and EnvironmentID (I am running in QA environment) and in return will get either a connection object (preferred) or encrypted connection string that will allow said application to connect to resources it needs. There will be cases when application needs to connect to two (or more) database resources (i.e. to SQL and iSeries). What are looking at DP API at the moment, but I am not convinced that DP API is the solution as it tied in with machine key. In our case using machine key isn't feasible, so I want to know if there are other approaches available.

  fHi, I need to build an site with some portal like functionality where an param in the request will indentify the portal. like so http:/domain/controller/action/portal Now my problem is if an portal doesn't exists there must be an redirect to an other site/page and an user can login in to one portal but if the user comes to an other portal the user must be redirected back to the login page for that portal. I have something working now, but i feel like there must be an central place in the pipeline to handle this. My current solution uses an custom action filter which checks the portal param and sees if the portal exists and checks if the user logged on in that portal (the portal the user logged on for is in the authentication cookie). I make my own IIndentiy and IPrincipal in the application_postauthentication event. I have 2 problems with my current approach: 1: It's not really enforced, i have to add the attributes to all controllers and/or actions. 2: The isauthenticated on an user isn't really working, i would like that to work. But for that i need to have access to the params of the route when i create my IPrincipal/IIndenty and i can't seem to find an correct place to do that.   I am using Reportviewer to generate a sales invoice to be printed by the user. How can I get databound fields to be printed on every page of a multi page invoice? The invoice is printed on a pre-printed form. I want the printed form to look roughly like: page 1 customer john smith 123 main st. city, CA 90000 some item1 $100 some item2 $150 some item3 $150 page 2 customer john smith 123 main st. city, CA 90000 some item4 $500 some item5 $250 some item6 $950 Total $2100 Using 1 list which contains databound textbox fields for the customer info, and a table for the items. The problem is if there are many items such that the items flow over to page 2, the next page only contains items, and not the customer info which needs to be printed on second page as well. I tried using page header, but I can't use databound items in page header. Please Help!

• Are all languages used within .net Equally performant?

  I know the "Sales pitch" answer is yes to this question, but is it technically true. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is designed as an intermediate language based on Imperative Programming (IP), but this has obvious implications when dealing with Declarative Programming (DP). So how efficient is a language based on a different paradigm than the Imperative Style when implemented in the CLR? I also get the feeling that the step to DP would incur an extra level of abstraction that might not model at all performant, would this be a fair comment? I have done some simple tests using F# and it all looks great, but am I missing something if the programs get more complex?

• Jekyll - How to approach asset processing (minification, spriting...)

  I recently switched to Jekyll and I find the conversion pipeline works really well. However I'm stuck on which approach to take when the process is many inputs to one output (ex: concatenating CSS files, creating image sprites...) I know several tools that can do it, that can be called either from the command line or in Ruby code directly. For ex: Jammit css sprites Compass sprites My current solution is a few Jekyll plugins that call these tools. However, it has the following problems: 1. SASS files should be processed, then concatenated/minified SASS-CSS is a Converter, and the concatenation is a Generator run on the output. Unfortunately generators are run first, which means the concatenation is always a step behind (I have to run the build twice) 2. Jekyll does not know about the source/output relationship With converters, when I run Jekyll in server mode, if I change a SASS file it automatically runs the conversion to CSS. When dealing with concatenation/spriting, I haven't found a way to do the same. I end up having to run a "normal" Jekyll build (not server auto) to update the concatenated files and sprites.   I am trying to parallelise a code using scala actors. That is my first real code with actors, but I have some experience with Java Mulithreading and MPI in C. However I am completely lost. The workflow I want to realise is a circular pipeline and can be described as the following: Each worker actor has a reference to another one, thus forming a circle There is a coordinator actor which can trigger a computation by sending a StartWork() message When a worker receives a StartWork() message, it process some stuff locally and sends DoWork(...) message to its neighbour in the circle. The neighbours do some other stuff and sends in turn a DoWork(...) message to its own neighbour. This continues until the initial worker receives a DoWork() message. The coordinator can send a GetResult() message to the initial worker and wait for a reply. The point is that the coordinator should only receive a result when data is ready. How can a worker wait that the job returned to it before answering the GetResult() message ? To speed up computation, any worker can receive a StartWork() at any time. • ASP.NET MVC: How to create a usable UrlHelper instance?

  I am using quartz.net to schedule regular events within asp.net mvc application. The scheduled job should call a service layer script that requires a UrlHelper instance (for creating Urls based on correct routes (via urlHelper.Action(..)) contained in emails that will be sent by the service). I do not want to hardcode the links into the emails - they should be resolved using the urlhelper. The job: public class EvaluateRequestsJob : Quartz.IJob { public void Execute(JobExecutionContext context) { // where to get a usable urlHelper instance? ServiceFactory.GetRequestService(urlHelper).RunEvaluation(); } } Please note that this is not run within the MVC pipeline. There is no current request being served, the code is run by the Quartz scheduler at defined times. How do I get a UrlHelper instance usable on the indicated place? If it is not possible to construct a UrlHelper, the other option I see is to make the job "self-call" a controller action by doing a HTTP request - while executing the action I will of course have a UrlHelper instance available - but this seems a little bit hacky to me.

  We are building an ecommerce app where we want our users to pick out a (any provider we can make compatible with our app) payment provider. Up to today, we only support paypal and we have implemented this rather manually. We are looking for some sort of a module (free or commercial) to easily plugin in more payment providers to let customers accept payments through them. Our customers would use this to accept payments for sales in their web shops. Any ideas on such "modules"? I know of the Zend_Payment module but that's not updated anymore or isn't out yet at all. We run PHP in the Zend Framework if that matters.

• Is there a standard practice for synchronizing SQL Server tables?

  I've written an application that retrieves pricing and part options from a SQL database to generate a 3D Model of the product and create a sales proposal. My client likes it so much they want to be able to use it on laptops in the field now. The catch is, they won't have an internet connection. I'm considering setting up a SQLite database as part of the standard installation. The SQLite database on each laptop will synchronize with the main database when the internet connection is re-established. Are there best practices regarding synchronizing SQL tables like this? Are there any pitfalls I should consider? I'm open to all options. Thank you.

• How should I measure Concurrent Licence Usage

  Hi I have detailed stats on user access to my system detailing login and logout times as well as machine used, network username etc. I am in need of measuring what I would term a concurrent user licences level based on this information. Now I could take the maximum logged in for any 1 day in a 3 month period say 170 or I could take the average say 133. Does anyone have or know of a formula for working this out or is it as simple as the high water mark which is 170 in my example. A client has recently gone from an unlimited licence to a concurrent licence so I am faced with the task of setting the initial licence level. There is potential for more licence sales in the future so I don't want it set to high and I do want it based on historical data that the system collects rather than guess work.

• C# Button Text Unicode characters.

  C# doesn't want to put Unicode characters on buttons. If I put \u2129 in the Text attribute of the button, the button displays the \u2129, not the Unicode character, (example - I chose 2129 because I could see it in the font currently active on the machine). I saw this question before, link text, but the question isn't really answered, just got around. I am working on applications which are going all over the world, and don't want to install all the fonts, more then "don't want", there are that many that I doubt the machine I am working on has sufficient disk space. Our overseas sales agents supply the Unicode character "numbers". Is there another way forward with this? As an aside, (curiosity), why does it not work?

  I'm using jquery with the jquery form plugin. I read through a bunch of posts, the docs, etc., and I'm still having trouble with what I believe to be simple. I have a form with some simple text inputs and a couple textareas, and I have this link that I want to trigger submission of that form to a specific method (/email): <a id="email-data">Send Email</a> and this jquery in doc ready: $('#email-data').click(function() { var options = { url: '/email/', success: alert('Email sent.') }; $('#report-giftcard-sales-form').ajaxSubmit(options); }); So I would expect it to submit to my /email method, but no such luck. Currently I just have the /email method logging a debug message, so it's as simple as can be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

"stock" table: item_id | pcs | operation apples | 100 | order oranges | 50 | order apples | -100 | delivery pears | 100 | order oranges | -40 | delivery apples | 50 | order apples | 50 | delivery Basically I need to join these two queries together. A query which prints stock balances: SELECT stock.item_id, Sum(stock.pcs) AS stock_balance FROM stock GROUP BY stock.item_id; A query which prints sales statistics SELECT stock.item_id, Sum(stock.pcs) AS pcs_ordered, Count(stock.item_id) AS number_of_orders FROM stock GROUP BY stock.item_id, stock.operation HAVING stock.operation="order"; I think that some sort of JOIN would do the job but I have no idea how to glue queries together. Desired output: item_id | stock_balance | pcs_ordered | number_of_orders apples | 0 | 150 | 2 oranges | 10 | 50 | 1 pears | 100 | 100 | 1 This is just example. Maybe, I will need to add more conditions because there is more columns. Is there a universal technique of combining multiple queries together?

• How to get a fully transparent backbuffer in directx 9 without vista Desktop Window Manager

  I currently have an activex control that initiates a media (video/audio) framework another development group in my company developed and I am providing a window handle to that code. That handle is being used by their rendering plugin in the pipeline that uses Direct3d for rendering the video using that handle. I have seperate LPDIRECT3D9EX and LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9EX pointers that I initialize in my activex control. I am trying to clear a backbuffer to transparent and then use directx drawing primatives to draw on that backbuffer producing a transparent window with my drawing primatives over the streaming video on the directx surface below. It appears that clearing a device backbuffer with full alpha transparency is ignored by directx. d3ddev->Clear(0, NULL, D3DCLEAR_TARGET, D3DCOLOR_RGBA(0, 0, 1, 0 /*full alpha*/), 1.0f, 0); I can see the object I draw but they are drawn on top of a backbuffer that has the RGB color specified without the alpha value. The project linked (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/directx/umvistad3d.aspx) to in the stackoverflow question below does what I want but requires vista's Desktop Window Manager and won't work for XP. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/148275/how-do-i-draw-transparent-directx-content-in-a-transparent-window I have tried with D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE true with configured blend with no avail. I have also tried to have pixels with full alpha values not rendered using D3DRS_ALPHATESTENABLE, D3DRS_ALPHAREF, and D3DRS_ALPHAFUNC setup but this doesn't work either. I have tried using ColorFill with alpha after retrieving the backbuffer with GetBackBuffer but this doesn't work either. (again only RGB is used) Finally I have tried creating a texture, selecting a surface, colorfilling that surface with a fully transparent alpha value, then loading that surface onto the backbuffer but only the RGB values appear to be used. I have checked the capabilities using the DXCapsViewer.exe and the D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 backbuffer format that I am using for the backbuffer is valid so it can't be that. Has anyone gotten a transparent backbuffer in directx to work in XP?

• Need advice on comparing the performance of 2 equivalent linq to sql queries

  I am working on tool to optimize linq to sql queries. Basically it intercepts the linq execution pipeline and makes some optimizations like for example removing a redundant join from a query. Of course, there is an overhead in the execution time before the query gets executed in the dbms, but then, the query should be processed faster. I don't want to use a sql profiler because I know that the generated query will be perform better in the dbms than the original one, I am looking for a correct way of measuring the global time between the creation of the query in linq and the end of its execution. Currently, I am using the Stopwatch class and my code looks something like this: var sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); const int amount = 100; for (var i = 0; i < amount; i++) { ExecuteNonOptimizedQuery(); } sw.Stop(); Console.Writeline("Executing the query {2} times took: {0}ms. On average, each query took: {1}ms", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds, sw.ElapsedMilliseconds / amount, amount); Basically the ExecutenNonOptimizedQuery() method creates a new DataContext, creates a query and then iterates over the results. I did this for both versions of the query, the normal one and the optimized one. I took the idea from this post from Frans Bouma. Is there any other approach/considerations I should take? • Ways to call Blocks within Magento: createBlock vs Layout xml file

  Context: I'm trying to include Adminhtml blocks in the frontend of the site to replace some of the user account blocks. The first thing I'm trying to do is simply display the block on the correct page. I can replace the entire page by setting the Body of the response inside the controller, but I'm having a hard time including the block in the layout xml file and then calling it within the template. Why would I be able to create an adminhtml/sales_order_grid from Mage_Sales_OrderController using createBlock: $this->getResponse()->setBody($this->getLayout()->createBlock('adminhtml/sales_order_grid')->toHtml()); But not from a frontend layout, using a declaration <block type="adminhtml/sales_order_grid" name="orders_widget"/> within app/design/frontend/default/default/layout/sales.xml The latter produces an error without a stack trace: Fatal error: Call to a member function toHtml() on a non-object in app/code/core/Mage/Core/Model/Layout.php on line 526 Thanks for any guidance!

• How do I filter one of the columns in a SQL Server SQL Query

  I have a table (that relates to a number of other tables) where I would like to filter ONE of the columns (RequesterID) - that column will be a combobox where only people that are not sales people should be selectable. Here is the "unfiltered" query, lets call it QUERY 1: SELECT RequestsID, RequesterID, ProductsID FROM dbo.Requests If using a separate query, lets call it QUERY 2, to filter RequesterID (which is a People related column, connected to People.PeopleID), it would look like this: SELECT People.PeopleID FROM People INNER JOIN Roles ON People.RolesID = Roles.RolesID INNER JOIN Requests ON People.PeopleID = Requests.RequesterID WHERE (Roles.Role <> N'SalesGuy') ORDER BY Requests.RequestsID Now, is there a way of "merging" the QUERY 2 into QUERY 1? (dbo.Requests in QUERY 1 has RequesterID populated as a Foreign Key from dbo.People, so no problem there... The connections are all right, just not know how to write the SQL query!)
