  I'm making a small social networking web site for a specific university's students (where I study) and I'm concerned about security (access to the database). What should I do? What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook. You cannot see all foreign students on Facebook. • ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

  So I just created a new widget that would show up in a product page in my site. This widget will show several products similar to the product that is displayed in the current page. The purpose is to help users compare similar products. Let's say in the product page A http://domain/products/A The Similar Products widget will show http://domain/products/B http://domain/products/C http://domain/products/D http://domain/products/E My question is how to track this "Product B page were visited X times from Product A page via Similar Product widget"? (And there is also chance that Product B will show up in the widget on Product C page) I have this idea using the Event feature from Google Analytics. But I'm still not sure if it is or what is the common best practice for this.

• Why does the Git community seem to ignore side-by-side diffs

  I used to use Windows, SVN, Tortoise SVN, and Beyond Compare. It was a great combination for doing code reviews. Now I use OSX and Git. I've managed to kludge together a bash script along with Gitx and DiffMerge to come up with a barely acceptable solution. I've muddled along with this setup, and similar ones, for over a year. I've also tried using the Github diff viewer and the Gitx diff viewer, so it's not like I've not given them a chance. There are so many smart people doing great stuff with Git. Why not the side-by-side diff with the option of seeing the entire file? With people who have used both, I've never heard of anyone that likes the single +/- view better, at least for more than a quick check.

I'm hoping to find some information on what percentage of a dev's salary is generally spent on tooling, both hardware and software. Where can I find such information?   I am a COBOL programmer, desperately trying to learn and program Java. Although I understand the OO priciples and concepts, I am at a lost putting all together. I am trying to find some examples on how code will look in COBOL vs Java - something a bit more complicated than "hello world" [I am past that initial headache! :-)], that includes OO principles - basically, a decent 1000+ liner in COBOL, with the Java code to work through. After working through book after book, doing the examples, and even writing small java programs at work, I think working through an example I can compare will be the best way to getting my thinking cap converted, and being able to do in Java what I can do after 10 years with COBOL.   I find I tend to need intermediate variables. In Clojure that's in the form of let bindings, like cmp-result-1 and cmp-result-2 in the following function. (defn str-cmp "Takes two strings and compares them. Returns the string if a match; and nil if not." [str-1 str-2 start-pos substr-len] (let [cmp-result-1 (subs str-1 start-pos substr-len) cmp-result-2 (subs str-2 start-pos substr-len)] (compare cmp-result-1 cmp-result-2))) I could re-write this function without them, but to me, the function's purpose looks clearer. I tend to do this quite in a bit in my main, and that is primarily for debugging purposes, so I can pass a variable to print out intermediate output. Is this bad form, and, if so, why? Thanks.

• Type Conversion in JPA 2.1

  The Java Persistence 2.1 specification (JSR 338) adds support for various new features such as schema generation, stored procedure invocation, use of entity graphs in queries and find operations, unsynchronized persistence contexts, injection into entity listener classes, etc. JPA 2.1 also add support for Type Conversion methods, sometime called Type Converter. This new facility let developers specify methods to convert between the entity attribute representation and the database representation for attributes of basic types. For additional details on Type Conversion, you can check the JSR 338 Specification and its corresponding JPA 2.1 Javadocs. In addition, you can also check those 2 articles. The first article ('How to implement a Type Converter') gives a short overview on Type Conversion while the second article ('How to use a JPA Type Converter to encrypt your data') implements a simple use-case (encrypting data) to illustrate Type Conversion. Mission critical applications would probably rely on transparent database encryption facilities provided by the database but that's not the point here, this use-case is easy enough to illustrate JPA 2.1 Type Conversion.

• Is OpenStack suitable as a fault tolerant DB host?

  I am trying to design a fault tolerant DB cluster (schema does not matter) that would not require much maintenance. After looking at almost everything from MySQL to MongoDB to HBase I still find that no DB is easily scalable - Cassandra comes close but it has its own set of problems. So I was thinking what if I run something like MySQL or OrientDB on top of a large openstack VM. The VM would be fault tolerant by itself so I dont need to do it st DB level. Is it viable? Has it been done before? If not then what are the possible problems with this approach?

• Application for taking pretty screenshots (like OS X does)

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

• Sometimes new windows don't come to the front when launched

  I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications? • Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

• What is the difference between all-static-methods and applying a singleton pattern?

  I am making a database to store information about the users of my website (I am using stuts2 and hence Java EE technology). For the database I'll be making a DBManager. Should I apply singleton pattern here or rather make all it's methods static? I will be using this DBManager for basic things like adding, deleting and updating User profiles. Along with it, I'll use for all other querying purposes, for instance to find out whether a username already exists and to get all users for administrative purposes and stuff like that. My questions What is the benefit of singleton pattern? Which thing is most apt here? All static methods or a singleton pattern? Please compare both of them. P.S. The database is bigger than this. Here I am talking only about the tables which I'll be using for storing User Information.
