  • How do I set up DNS with nic.io to point to an AWS EC2 server?

    I purchased a domain one week ago via nic.io. I have elected to provide my own DNS [because they provided no other option]. I'm trying to point my .io domain at my EC2 server instance. I've allocated an elastic IP and associated it with the instance. I can SSH into the instance and access point 80 via the IP address just fine. The IP is 54.235.201.241. nic.io support said the following: "You have selected to provide your own DNS and therefore if there is an issue with the set-up of the name servers you will need to contact your DNS provider." So, I created a Hosted Zone via Route 53 in AWS. This created NS and SOA records. I then set the Primary and Secondary servers at nic.io's domain admin page to the SOA record domains. Additionally, I set the optional servers to the NS domains. I did this two days ago, and I can't access the server via the domain. I ran a DNS check here...still not sure what I need to do: http://mydnscheck.com/?domain=chadjohnson.io&ns1=&ns2=&ns3=&ns4=&ns5=&ns6=. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

BIND file, created by professional hosting company, before: $ORIGIN mycoolsite.com. $TTL 300 @ SOA ns1.cheapreg.com. registry.cheapreg.com. ( ... ) @ IN 3600 NS ns1.cheapreg.com. @ IN 3600 NS ns2.cheapreg.com. @ IN 3600 A 199.9.99.85 @ IN 3600 A 199.9.99.86 * IN 3600 A 199.9.99.85 * IN 3600 A 199.9.99.86 www IN 3600 A 199.9.99.85 www IN 3600 A 199.9.99.86 BIND file, created by layman, after: $ORIGIN mycoolsite.com. $TTL 300 @ SOA ns1.cheapreg.com. registry.cheapreg.com. ( ... ) @ IN 3600 NS ns1.cheapreg.com. @ IN 3600 NS ns2.cheapreg.com. * IN 3600 A 219.94.116.50 * IN 3600 A 219.94.116.51 * IN 3600 A 219.94.116.52 The difference is that the "pro"-file has duplicated the nameserver entries, once for @, and once for *, and I haven't. Any reason I should also duplicate nameserver entries (@ and *) ?

  • switching dns server providers

    I'm trying to wrap my head around something that I thought I kinda understood, but clearly there's some piece missing. We're currently using Zerigo as our primary dns, with slave dns running on linode. This works quite well. However, recent DDOS attacks on zerigo meant that whilst dns queries were still resolved, we were unable to make any dns changes. Since we rely on dns changes on our own infrastructure, I'm looking to improve this somehow. I'd rather not ditch zerigo completely, and realise that this or similar problems can happen with ANY primary dns hosting provider. It might not be DDOS, but a bug on their server, or something that means we can no longer issue updates. For this I want to have some fallback option: a completely independent (primary) dns provider (maybe AWS), which we will keep in-sync manually. We will switch-over to it when there's a problem. This brings me to my question: How do I make sure we can switch those providers quickly enough? specifically, on our registrar, there's a list of name servers, but no settings like TTL etc. How do dns clients know to use the newly updated name server records? Is this configured in the SOA? However, the SOA itself is hosted with the dns provider and we might not be able to update it... This is not a question about a one-time move, which can be planned and scheduled and tested, but rather to be able to do so when things are half-broken.

  • What is the reason for this DNSSEC validation failure of dnsviz.net?

    On trying to resolve dnsviz.net from a host using an Unbound resolver that is configured to use DNSSEC validation, the result is "no servers could be reached": $ dig -t soa dnsviz.net ; <<>> DiG 9.6-ESV-R4 <<>> -t soa dnsviz.net ;; global options: +cmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Nothing is logged by Unbound to suggest why this is the case. Here is the /etc/unbound/unbound.conf: server: verbosity: 1 interface: 192.168.0.8 interface: 127.0.0.1 interface: ::0 access-control: 0.0.0.0/0 refuse access-control: ::0/0 refuse access-control: 127.0.0.0/8 allow_snoop access-control: 192.168.0.0/16 allow_snoop chroot: "" auto-trust-anchor-file: "/etc/unbound/root.key" val-log-level: 2 python: remote-control: control-enable: yes If I add: module-config: "iterator" (thus disabling DNSSEC validation) then I am able to resolve this host normally. The domain and its DNSSEC check out fine according to http://dnscheck.iis.se/ so there must be something wrong with my resolver configuration. What is it and how do I go about debugging that?

  • Trying to Set up SMTP Server on WIndows Server 2012

    I'm working on a website, and I need to test the functionality of sending email messages from ASP.NET, something like this: Dim msg As New MailMessage("email1", "email2") msg.Subject = "Subject"<br> msg.IsBodyHtml = True<br> msg.Body = "Click <a href='site'>here</a>." Dim client As SmtpClient = New SmtpClient() client.Host = "My-Server"<br> client.Port = 25<br> client.DeliveryMethod = SmtpDeliveryMethod.Network<br> client.Send(msg) This is running from a Windows 8 workstation. I've installed SMTP server on my Windows Server 2012 machine. The mail shows up in the mailroot/Queue folder and sits there, eventually getting deposited into Badmail. Now I have AT&T U-verse at home, and a few devices connected to the gateway, including let's call it "My-Server." When I run SmtpDiag from say, datc@... to [email protected] I get SOA serial number match passed, Local DNS (99-135-60-233.lightspeed.bcvloh.sbcglobal.net) & Remote DNS (hotmail.com) tests *not* passed, and ultimately, Connecting to the server failed. Error: 10060. Failed to submit mail to mx2.hotmail.com error. When I set My-Server's IP to static and equal to the external IP, 99.135.60.233, and again run SmtpDiag, I get SOA, Local DNS, and Remote DNS tests passed, but the same 10060 error. Same for yahoo.com, gmail.com, and so forth. Is it my ISP's job to fix this? Some PTR record missing somewhere? Is it at all possible to have a home-based SMTP server? All I want is to test my email code. Perhaps, my IP address is just not "trusted" somehow. Thanks.

    This is a hypothetical question. Let's suppose I have two networks, each with its own DNS server. Network A has names a1.local, a2.local, ... and network B has b1.local, b2.local, .... Zone file for each of the networks looks something like this: $ORIGIN local @ IN SOA .... blah blah blah a1 A 1.2.3.4 a2 A 2.3.4.5 ... for A, and $ORIGIN local @ IN SOA .... blah blah blah b1 A 3.4.5.6 b2 A 4.5.6.7 ... for B. Now I also have a regular internet domain example.com and I want to access the machines as a1.A.example.com, b1.B.example.com, ... How will I have to change the configuration of name servers in networks A and B? (in fact I am writing a super-magic DNS server, currently serving A and B separately, but there is a chance that I will have to add the ability to merge the networks; so I'm interested in knowing the problems which lie ahead of me and how to prepare for the possibility)

So kann man bei einem Snack auch gleich die beeindruckende Atmosphäre der Commerzbank Arena auf sich wirken lassen und ist, ehe man sich versieht, mit dem nebenstehenden Geschäftsführer, einer Managerin und zwei Vertriebsmitarbeitern in ein Gespräch über die jeweils letzten Stadionbesuche verwickelt. Überall fröhliches Wiedersehen, viele haben sich das letzte Mal vor genau einem Jahr getroffen, im Radisson Blu, beim OPN Day Satellite. So, die Masse setzt sich in Bewegung – auf geht’s zur Eröffnung: Silvia Kaske fängt an! 13:45 Uhr Die Keynotes waren mal wieder ein thematischer Rundumschlag – und ein kleines Who-is-Who im Oracle Universum zugleich: Silvia Kaske, Senior Director Channel A&C eröffnete den Partner Day, danach stellte David Callaghan (Senior Vice President UK, Ireland, Israel) die EMEA-Strategien für das FY13 vor und Jürgen Kunz (SVP Technology Northern Europe & Country Leader Germany) sprach über die Geschäftsmöglichkeiten mit Partnern. Christian Werner gab in seiner neuen Funktion als Senior Director Alliances & Channels Germany einen Überblick über die neue Struktur des Oracle Channels und stellte das deutsche Team vor. Zum Abschluss folgte mit Prof. Hermann Maurer ein Gastredner von der Academia Europaea, einer prominent besetzten akademischen Gesellschaft, die sich dem besseren Verständnis der Wissenschaft in der Öffentlichkeit verschrieben hat. Er wagte einen Blick in die Zukunft der IT: „Das Beste kommt erst noch“. Wie immer, in einem so komprimierten Programm, bleibt noch die eine oder andere Frage – aber jetzt ist ja Zeit, bei Coffee & Networking noch mal nachzufragen. Kurz nach 14 Uhr Viele haben inzwischen auch das erste Obergeschoss erkundet. In der Partner Service Zone ist das Angebot breit gefächert: Von Oracle Financing über das License Management bis hin zu OPN Specialized dreht sich hier alles um konkrete Angebote für Partner. Nach einem kurzen Abstecher in die ISV-Lounge, geht es weiter zur Expert Zone: Oracle Database, Oracle Options, Fusion Middleware, Applications und Oracle Hardware heißen hier die Themen und an den Infoständen wird bereits lautstark gefachsimpelt. Zurück im Erdgeschoss sieht man noch diverse Partner, Oracle Executives und andere Teilnehmer durcheinander wuseln, um ihre Breakout Session zu finden. Andere blättern im druckfrischen A&C Kursbuch. In den nächsten zwei Stunden stehen Business Opportunities im Fokus – aufgeteilt nach Hardware, Technology oder Sales Partnern – dazu noch die Angebote der VADs, die A&C Partner Sessions und das 1:1 Speed Dating. Einige Partner nutzen parallel die angebotenen Implementation Tests, um direkt vor Ort die Zertifizierung zu erhalten. Das doppelte Angebot der Breakouts ermöglicht den Teilnehmern, an möglichst vielen Sessions nacheinander teilzunehmen. Kein Thema soll zu kurz kommen! Ein AusblickWas erwartet uns noch, im Laufe des Nachmittags? Sehr informativ wird sicherlich das Leader Panel, in dem die teilnehmenden Partner Fragen an Oracle Executives stellen können. Wenn dann die ersten Teilnehmer unruhig werden, hat das nichts mit den Themen zu tun. Nein, es steht vielmehr noch ein spannender Höhepunkt bevor: die Partner Award Ceremony (über die wir später ausführlich berichten werden).   • Expanding the Partner Ecosystem with Third-Party Plug-ins

    Oracle Enterprise Manager’s extensibility capabilities are designed to allow customers and partners to adapt Enterprise Manager for management of heterogeneous environments with Plug-ins and Connectors.  Third-party developers continue to take advantage of Oracle Enterprise Manager’s Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) to build plug-ins to Enterprise Manager 12c, such as F5’s BIG IP Plug-in and Entuity’s Eye of the Storm Network Management Plug-In.  Partners can also validate their plug-ins through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program, which assures customers that the plug-in has been tested and is functionally and technically sound, is designed in a reliable and standardized manner, and operates and performs as documented.   Two very recent examples of partners which have beta versions of their plug-ins are Blue Medora's VMware vSphere plug-in and the NetApp Storage plug-in.  VMware vSphere Plug-in by Blue Medora Blue Medora, an Oracle Partner Network (OPN) “Gold” member, which just announced that it is now signing up customers to try a beta version of their new VMware vSphere plug-in for Enterprise Manager 12c.  According to Blue Medora, the vSphere plug-in monitors critical VMware metrics (CPU, Memory, Disk, Network, etc) at the Host, VM, Cluster and Resource Pool levels.  It has minimal performance impact via an “agentless” approach that requires no installation directly on VMware servers.  It has discovery capabilities for VMware Datacenters, ESX Hosts, Clusters, Virtual Machines, and Datastores.  It offers integration of native VMware Events into Enterprise Manager, and it provides over 300 VMware-related health, availability, performance, and configuration metrics.  It comes with more than 30 out-of-the-box pre-defined thresholds and can manage VMware via a series of jobs split between cluster, host and VM target types.The company reports that the Enterprise Manager 12c plug-in supports vSphere versions 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.  Platforms supported include Linux 64-bit, Windows, AIX and Solaris SPARC and x86.  Information about the plug-in, including how to sign up for the beta, is available at their web site at http://bluemedora.com after selecting the "Products" tab. NetApp Storage Plug-in NetApp believes the combination of storage system monitoring with comprehensive management of Oracle systems with Enterprise Manager will help customers reduce the cost and complexity of managing applications that rely on NetApp storage and Oracle technologies.  So, NetApp built a plug-in and reports that it has comprehensive availability and performance information for NetApp storage systems.  Using the plug-in, Oracle Enterprise Manager customers with NetApp storage solutions can track the association between databases and storage components and thereby respond to faults and IO performance bottlenecks quickly. With the latest configuration management capabilities, one can also perform drift analysis to make sure all storage systems are configured as per established gold standards.   • Making it GREAT! Oracle Partners Building Apps Workshop with UX and ADF in UK

    Yes, making is what it's all about. This time, Oracle Partners in the UK were making great looking usable apps with the Oracle Applications Development Framework (ADF) and user experience (UX) toolkit. And what an energy-packed and productive event at the Oracle UK, Thames Valley Park, location it was. Partners learned the fundamentals of enterprise applications UX, why it's important, all about visual design, how to wireframe designs, and then how to build their already-proven designs in ADF. There was a whole day on mobile apps, learning about mobile design principles, free mobile UX and ADF resources from Oracle, and then trying it out. The workshop wrapped up with the latest Release 7 simplified UIs, Mobilytics, and other innovations from Oracle, and a live demo of a very neat ADF Mobile Android app built by an Oracle contractor. And, what a fun two days both Grant Ronald of ADF and myself had in running the workshop with such a great audience, too! I particularly enjoyed the wireframing and visual design sessions interaction; and seeing some outstanding work done by partners. Of note from the UK workshop were innovative design features not seen before and made me all the happier that developers were bringing their own ideas from the consumer IT world of mobility, simplicity, and social to the world of work apps in a smart way within an enterprise methodology too.  Partner wireframe exercise. Applying mobile design principles and UX design patterns means you've already productively making great usable apps! Next, over to Oracle ADF Mobile with it! One simple example from the design of a mobile field service app was that participants immediately saw how the UX and device functionality of the super UK-based app Hailo app could influence their designs (the London cabbie influence maybe?), as well as how we all use maps, cameras, barcode scanners and microphones on our phones could be used in work. And, of course, ADF Mobile has the device integration solutions there too! I wonder will U.S. workshops in Silicon Valley see an Uber UX influence (LOL)! That we also had partners experienced with Oracle Forms who could now offer a roadmap from Forms to Simplified UI and Mobile using ADF, and do it through through the cloud, really made this particular workshop go "ZING!" for me. Many thanks to the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) team for organizing this event with us, and to the representatives of the Oracle Partners that showed and participated so well. That's what I love out this outreach. It's a two-way, solid value-add for all. Interested? Why would partners and developers with ADF skills sign up for this workshop?   • Troubleshooting mailserver (Postfix, Dovecot) on Ubuntu Server 9.10?

    Hi, I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

    I want a shared filesystem on top of drbd8 on two nodes. The servers run ubuntu 9.10. I googled a lot, but couldn't find an clear trend what the web community prefers. It's seems that OCFS2 is more used at the moment. Which filesystem is more reliable, faster? GFS2 or OCFS2? Is the linux community going more towards GFS2 or OCFS2? Which of this two is better supported by ubuntu 9.10? Are there better (or more common) alternatives?

  • NTFS-3G is only mounting external drives as read-only

    I'm currently running RHEL 5.5, and I installed the ntfs-3g utility from here: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download/. I have also followed their instructions for auto-mounting NTFS USB drives here: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#plugandplay. The problem I'm experiencing is that ntfs-3g is automatically mounting as root. In order for me to obtain write support, I need to navigate to the mounted device as root, and perform write actions with elevated privileges. Is there a way to mount USB NTFS volumes automatically without needing to sudo every write command? Thanks!

    A simple Google search for "Time Machine for Windows" results in a flurry of different little apps. But instead of relying on forum anecdotes and advertisements, I call on the much wiser Super User beta community for some depth on this one. Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == wife). Bonus points for a beautiful UI
