• How can I have better sound quality?

  I have been using Ubuntu for years now, and the latest Ubuntu 13.10 is working perfectly on my N56VZ. The image quality is awesome, better than on Windows, but there is one thing that is really bugging me and that kills my "cinema" experience... The sound. Ubuntu sound quality isn't nearly as good as it does on Windows using Realtek (with Powerful on the equalizer). On Ubuntu the sound is like "faded", it isn't as clear as on Windows. This happens on the system overall: VLC, Youtube, Rhythmbox... I think it is pulse itself that has a horrible sound quality. So, does anyone knows a solution for this? How can I have better sound quality on Ubuntu?

• How to copy existing movie files on ipad to watch?

  I have an iPad and a desktop running Ubuntu 12.04 with lots of movie files of various formats (avi, mp4, m4v, etc). Is it possible to transfer those files from within linux directly to the iPad (without using iTunes to sync) over USB and then play those movies on the iPad without reformatting/resizing all of them? I've used iTunes in a Windows XP virtualbox instance with other iOS mobile devices before but I would prefer a pure linux approach if possible. (I'm creating this question so that I can share the solution I found because I failed to find a simple, satisfactory answer elsewhere).

  When i attach my Notebook (Nvidia Geforce GT 240M) to my Panasonic-TV via HDMI, both screens are activated. I use Nvidia-Driver Version 260.19.06. I wonder how to deactivate my notebook display automatically or with one Script and switch to the external Monitor when attached. The TV needs an overscan-correction of 100px to display the whole screen. I also want to close the notebook without deactivating the external monitor, what still happens now. Is this possible?

  Some HTPC media manager applications require movie files to be in stored in separate folders to properly store information such as cover art images and other metadata. Here we look at copying movie files to individual folders. If you already have a large movie collection stored in a single folder, we’ll show you how to quickly move those files into their own individually named folders. File2Folder FIle2folder is a handy portable app that automatically creates and moves movie files into a folder of the same filename. There is no installation needed. Simply download and run the .exe file (link below). Enter the current movie directory, or browse for the folder. File2folder now supports both local and network shares. When you are ready to create the folders and move the files, click Move! You’ll see the move progress displayed in the window. When the process is finished, you’ll have all your movie file in individual folders.   Change your mind? Just click the Undo! button…   …and the move and folder creation process will be undone. • glx not working, optirun works, gnome in fallback mode

  It all started when I installed nvidia's own driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. Now nvidia-current seems to be functional. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode. • Good PPA for ffmpeg

  Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

  In pavucontrol, I can choose between RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series] and Built-in Audio. When the former is enabled, videos on (among others) Youtube play way too fast, but this answer solved my problem (though I don't know why). However, when I use Built-in Audio instead of RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series], the mixer in my applet appears to be disabled; the icon is replaced by a blank and changing the volume has no effect, as the applet apparently only relays to RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series]. How do I get an applet to control the volume for Built-in Audio instead?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.4 onto a pc for an elderly woman. It was supposed to solve the problems she was having with windows, ie: she would constantly remove things, or try to fix problems herself. So I figured that Linux would solve those issues. However, what I didn't take into account was that she watches " http://www.shepherdschapel.com/broadband.htm " and when using Ubuntu, I can't seem to find a media player to make the files work. I am out of ideas. I tried kplayer, and it worked (sort of). The file that is downloaded from the site when you click the windows media player site one link is, .wax format. Which is an instruction file for windows media player. Is there anything I can do to make these videos work?

  I am trying to configure Flowmotion to work on my Ubuntu Server. At present I use LAMP to serve pages from a Virtualbox installation. I will be moving this to a dedicated server but would like to enable true streaming of videos using this installation. I am only interested in open source streaming for a research project and although I have installed Flowmotion via apt-get I don't know how to start the service so that embedded videos located on the server will stream. Can anybody provide any information regarding this or online resources I may have missed? I have checked the documentation however if appears far too complex. Just clarify I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Ubuntu Server 12.06 64-bit

  Does anyone have experience with the XFX Radeon HD 6870 on Ubuntu 11.10? I've googled and the best I could find was someone getting the card to 'work' on linux. Nothing specific about ubuntu and this card. Specifically, I want to be able to use the full 1900x1200 resolution and watch 1080p movies. If yes, was it very complicated to get working?   Editing Question for Clarity Thanks for feedback so far, very insightful. I'm not sure how far along this part of the software community is, and what if any libraries exist for me to leverage from. Heres what I'm trying to do. Problem: Take an existing video of a game of rugby league. The Rugby League field is 100 metres long, 70 metres wide, and has white line markings every 10 metres running along the width of the field, as well as along the sidelines. Each side has 13 players on the field. Players on each team have identical jerseys that normally constrast strongly against background colours (green/brown field colour) and the referee's colour (usually yellow) and the designated water runner (orange). All players have a unique number in thick white lettering on their backs for identification. Video is taken with a high definition camera. Currently only one camera is used (2D) and existing video does not contain a foreground object of fixed spatial dimensions (as suggested in one answer for comparision measurements, however I could add this to future filming sessions if it is worthwhile). The player's do not run in a straight line 50% of the time but will go sideways on on a diagonal to the play the ball. The distance measured always starts from the spot of the previous "tackle", which ends where the player stops forward movement. It is not always possible to determine the players number from the video (facing other direction, sunlight, others standing in the way of the camera). But this isn't important as the software could allow for manual inputting of unknown "runs" at a later point after analysis. Determine the distance between two points (i.e. where the player started his "run" and where he finished it). I'm guessing that this would be quite doable if I manually marked the start and end point in the video. But how would I use landmarks in the background to determine the distance (assuming the person taking the video has kept it from jerking around). Question: Do software packages or libraries exist that are specialised enough to assist with writing analysis software to determine a sports persons distance travelled based on video taken of the performance?

• Looking for wireless product

  Can anyone suggest some options for me? I would like to provide our maintenance department with a view-only monitor showing our common Outlook calendars. I'm guessing it would have to have some touch-screen capabilities since they would need to be able to toggle between several calendars. We do have a cobbled together, building wide wireless network. I don't want anything that needs to be "wired or cabled" just plugged into a power source and mounted on the wall.

• How to replace avconv with (the real) ffmpeg and have it work right?

  Anyone know how to install the real, current ffmpeg (not the older version by avconv that comes w/ Ubuntu) without having the problems mentioned here? Reasons: Everything works (or so many have written), Use the new syntax, and After some research -- and without getting into the controversy -- I simply believe the packagers made a mistake going with avconv. This is a fix. Apparently this isn't as easy as it should be due to versioning conflicts, and that avconv and ffmpeg can't coexist on the same machine (noted in the above post). Though at least one guide mentions installing ffmpeg locally (~) to achieve coexistence. My release is Precise 12.04.3 LTS, but it appears this would apply to newer ones also.
