  • Securing a REST API

    - by Christopher McCann
I am in the middle of developing a REST API - the first one I ever have. The data being passed through the API is not of such a critical nature that there will be loss of life, economics etc if it was intercepted but at the same time I would like it to be secure. The data being transferred is simply like the data that would be transferred on Twitter or Facebook - not overly confidential but still should be kept private. What is the best way to secure this data? Am I best to use HTTP Basic Auth over SSL or should I be looking into something like OAuth. I have never really used REST much before so bit of a first for me. Thanks

  • google search rankings and trends api

    - by Drakkhen
I'm looking to find an api or program or interface to get the following information. I would like to see the amount of times a particular search term was used and its /weekly/monthly/yearly breakdown along with its rank in a particular page. I've found googlesearchpositionfinder.com and google.com/trends but i have 5000 terms to search for by hand is not happening. I've also found www.juiceanalytics.com/openjuice/programmatic-google-trends-api but it doesn't allow me to do a break down for a period of 2 years. Basically i'm trying to create a ranking of search phrases, the weeks(period) they were more popular and how a particular site(e.g urban dictionary) showed up in googles search rankings for the terms.

  • Rails: authentication system based on external API

    - by Slevin
i'm building a Rails application to extend features of an existing online Rails app. The existing Rails app provides an API for authentication. My approach: user X have an account at the existing Rails app. With these login data the user X should authenticate on my Rails app. The existing app offers a gem to connect to the API after login. Whats the best method to store the information about a successful login? Should i use sessions? Or does Rails offer better methods for this?

  • Unicode string handling using Windows API

    - by DeadMG
I always assumed that Unicode string handling was some dark art. However, I've seen that the Windows API has functions for comparing Unicode strings, for example. Does that mean that it's actually feasible to write a Unicode string class that can perform simple actions like sorting, equality comparison, and extraction from a file? Or are there hidden gotchas in the use of these functions that makes it actually a really bad idea? I'm just looking at libraries like ICU and they seem incredibly over-complicated compared to what a Unicode string class backed by the Windows API could actually look like, which would resemble the Standard string classes quite closely.

  • Google Maps API not working (help!)

    - by janoChen
When I click to the embedded Google Maps API of the following Web Page: http://ada.kiexpro.com/html/list.html (click ?? at the top-right corner). It displays: This web site needs a different Google Map API key. A new key can be generted at http://code.google.com/apis/maps/. Sorry but I've never used this application before. Do I have to just generate a new code in order to solve the problem? Or there are another problems?

  • Lua not producing table of functions (IO API)

    - by ArtOfCode
I'm working on a basic project in Lua. I've been trying to get data from files using the IO API (as defined here), but when I open a file and give it a handle, it doesn't seem to return a table of functions. The (erroneous bit of) code: local unread = fs.list("email/"..from.."/") local send = "" for _,file in ipairs(unread) do local handle = io.open(file,"r") local text = handle:read("*a") send = send .. text .. "\n" handle.close() fs.delete(file) end The fs you see on the first line is a professional filesystem wrapper round the IO API, not my work and perfectly error-free, so that's not the problem. However, when I try to read the file (handle:read()), it throws "attempt to index nil". Tracing it, it turns out that handle itself is nil. Any ideas?

  • Find & Replace in blogger

    - by Benjol
(I just learnt that Yahoo are shutting down Geocities, this is a bummer as I used my account there to host two icons, in the days when Blogger didn't upload gifs. Now those two icons are referenced in every one of my 600+ posts). Blogger doesn't have a "Find & Replace in all posts" function. I'm wondering about using the API to hack something together, and wondered if anyone has already tried playing with the API, if there are any tips or things to avoid. Also if there isn't a sneaky shortcut (like switching to ftp, doing the replace locally then switching back?). Not 100% programming related, please be lenient, or at least answer my question before closing it!

  • Have You Checked Our BI Publisher Channel at Youtube ?

    - by kanichiro.nishida
These days, more and more people watching video online rather than reading. Steve Jobs once said people don’t read anymore. Well, I love books and still read a lot either on books, magazine, iPad, MacbookPro, or whatever the medium shows me letters! But I have to admit, sometimes it’s much easier to understand especially something like How-To by just watching video clips than reading it. And this is why we started our BI Publisher Channel at Youtube last summer. Since then we have uploaded over 10 video clips so far and and now we’re gearing up to add more and more clips. Now, we’re in a middle of finishing up our work for the next 11G 1st patchset release, which should be coming soon and will have a lot of great new features that I can’t wait to talk to you guys about. And of course we’re preparing introduction and How-Top clips. So please subscribe the BI Publisher channel now if you haven’t done yet and stay tuned for the new clips! http://www.youtube.com/user/bipublisher Also, we’d love to hear your comments for each clip, so please don’t forget leaving your comments there after you watch!

  • What source code organization approach helps improve modularity and API/Implementation separation?

    - by Berin Loritsch
Few languages are as restrictive as Java with file naming standards and project structure. In that language, the file name must match the public class declared in the file, and the file must live in a directory structure matching the class package. I have mixed feelings about that approach. While I never have to guess where a file lives, there's still a lot of empty directories and artificial constraints. There's several languages that define everything about a class in one file, at least by convention. C#, Python (I think), Ruby, Erlang, etc. The commonality in most these languages is that they are object oriented, although that statement can probably be rebuffed (there is one non-OO language in the list already). Finally, there's quite a few languages mostly in the C family that have a separate header and implementation file. For C I think this makes sense, because it is one of the few ways to separate the API interface from implementations. With C it seems that feature is used to promote modularity. Yet, with C++ the way header and implementation files are split seems rather forced. You don't get the same clean API separation that you do with C, and you are forced to include some private details in the header you would rather keep only in the implementation. There's quite a few languages that have a concept that overlaps with interfaces like Java, C#, Go, etc. Some languages use what feels like a hack to provide the same concept like C# using pure virtual abstract classes. Still others don't really have an interface concept and rely on "duck" typing--for example Ruby. Ruby has modules, but those are more along the lines of mixing in behaviors to a class than they are for defining how to interact with a class. In OO terms, interfaces are a powerful way to provide separation between an API client and an API implementation. So to hurry up and ask the question, from a personal experience point of view: Does separation of header and implementation help you write more modular code, or does it get in the way? (it helps to specify the language you are referring to) Does the strict file name to class name scheme of Java help maintainability, or is it unnecessary structure for structure's sake? What would you propose to promote good API/Implementation separation and project maintenance, how would you prefer to do it?

  • ASP.Net and FaceBook Wall integration

    - by Jit
    Hi, I am new to FaceBook API. I like to send messages when I want from my aspx webpage. I used the different examples and used FaceBook API 3.1. I am getting error as "service temporarily unavailable". I have assigned AppKey, Secret Key and session key. My sample code is below. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using Facebook; using Facebook.Web; using Facebook.Rest; using Facebook.Session; using Facebook.Utility; using Facebook.BindingHelper; using Facebook.Schema; using Facebook.Web.FbmlControls; using Facebook.Session.DesktopPopup; namespace FaceBookApp { public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page { private const string ApplicationKey = "MY_APP_KEY"; private const string SecretKey = "MY_SECRET_KEY"; private Api fbAPI; private ConnectSession _connectSession; // private List<EventUser> _eventUsers; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { _connectSession = new ConnectSession(ApplicationKey, SecretKey); _connectSession.SessionKey = "MY_SESSION_KEY"; if (!_connectSession.IsConnected()) { // Not authenticated, proceed as usual. //lblStatus.Text = "Please sign-in with Facebook."; } else { // Authenticated, create API instance fbAPI = new Api(_connectSession); string response = fbAPI.Stream.Publish("publish steven on facebook."); } } } } The error message is confusing. It must be a very simple solution. I don't know what I am missing. Pls help. Here is the facebook exception. {"Service temporarily unavailable"}

  • jqtouch / google maps api v3 issue

    - by Rigo Vides
Hi everyone, I'm having a hard time triying to make jQtouch and Google Maps api V3 together. I've tried almost everything. It seems that the only source of information is here I checked every single post. I'm starting with jQuery and css... so there's a lot of stuff I don't understand. First of all, I'm using jQtouch framework to build a web app with google maps integration, the problem is that whenever I pan the map, strange flickering occurs. It's like jQtouch and the map are trying to fight for a callback. I'm using the latest revision out there. And have several bugs, regarding transition/animation functionality (since I don't wrap the map and all the element's divs within the #jqt wrapper) and css issues with some styling. Anyone has successfully achieve a functional setup build for this scenario? (google maps api v3 & jqtouch), I think is not necessary to paste you some code (But if you think is necessary please let me know and I'll do it), If you paste me a minimal example with a map (detailing jqtouch version, and modification to the styles/.js files), and some transition back and forth from the map to another div/section/page, you'll get the bounty. Thanks a lot in advance. And please, let me know if this is kind of 'legal' here, I mean, there's too loose information on the official wiki, and like 13 'solutions' but nothing concrete... I'm just triying to help anyone who step on in this problem in the future.

  • Android SMS API

    - by Schildmeijer
I know that the SMS content provider is not part of the public API (at least not documented), but if I understand correctly it's still possible to use many of the SMS features as long as you know how to use the API(?). E.g it's pretty straightforward to insert an SMS into your inbox: ContentValues values = new ContentValues(); values.put("address", "+457014921911"); contentResolver.insert(Uri.parse("content://sms"), values); Unfortunately this does not trigger the standard "new-SMS-in-your-inbox" notification. Is it possible to trigger this manually? Edit: AFAIK the "standard mail application (Messaging)" in Android is listening for incoming SMSes using the android.permission.RECEIVE_SMS permission. And then, when a new SMS has arrived, a status bar notification is inserted with a "special" notification id. So one solution to my problem (stated above) could be to find, and send the correct broadcast intent; something like "NEW SMS HAS ARRIVED"-intent. Edit: Downloaded a third party messaging application (chompsms) from Android market. This application satisfies my needs better. When i execute the code above the chompsms notice the new sms and shows the "standard status bar notification". So I would say that the standard Android Messaging application is not detecting sms properly? Or am I wrong?

  • Worklight client-side API to overrideBackButton doesn't work

    - by user2503429
I want to make something happen when back button is pressed so I put this code in Myhtml.js file : function wlCommonInit(){ /* * Application is started in offline mode as defined by a connectOnStartup property in initOptions.js file. * In order to begin communicating with Worklight Server you need to either: * * 1. Change connectOnStartup property in initOptions.js to true. * This will make Worklight framework automatically attempt to connect to Worklight Server as a part of application start-up. * Keep in mind - this may increase application start-up time. * * 2. Use WL.Client.connect() API once connectivity to a Worklight Server is required. * This API needs to be called only once, before any other WL.Client methods that communicate with the Worklight Server. * Don't forget to specify and implement onSuccess and onFailure callback functions for WL.Client.connect(), e.g: * * WL.Client.connect({ * onSuccess: onConnectSuccess, * onFailure: onConnectFailure * }); * */ // Common initialization code goes here } WL.App.overrideBackButton(backFunc); function backFunc(){ alert('You will back to previous page'); } but after build and deploy the app and I running it, nothing happened after I pressed back button, anybody have the solution ?

  • secure rest API for running user "apps" in an iframe

    - by Brian Armstrong
I want to let users create "apps" (like Facebook apps) for my website, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to make it secure. I have a REST api i want to run the user apps in an iframe on my own site (not a safe markup language like FBML) I was first looking at oAuth but this seems overkill for my solution. The "apps" don't need to be run on external sites or in desktop apps or anything. The user would stay on my site at all times but see the user submitted "app" through the iframe. So when I call the app the first time through the iframe, I can pass it some variables so it knows which logged in user is using it on my site. It can then use this user session in it's own API calls to customize the display. If the call is passed in the clear, I don't want someone to be able to intercept the session and impersonate the user. Does anyone know a good way to do this or good write up on it? Thanks!

  • Using the Search API with Sharepoint Foundation 2010 - 0 results

    - by MB
I am a sharepoint newbee and am having trouble getting any search results to return using the search API in Sharepoint 2010 Foundation. Here are the steps I have taken so far. The Service Sharepoint Foundation Search v4 is running and logged in as Local Service Under Team Site - Site Settings - Search and Offline Availability, Indexing Site Content is enabled. Running the PowerShell script Get-SPSearchServiceInstance returns TypeName : SharePoint Foundation Search Description : Search index file on the search server Id : 91e01ce1-016e-44e0-a938-035d37613b70 Server : SPServer Name=V-SP2010 Service : SPSearchService Name=SPSearch4 IndexLocation : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Exten sions\14\Data\Applications ProxyType : Default Status : Online When I do a search using the search textbox on the team site I get a results as I would expect. Now, when I try to duplicate the search results using the Search API I either receive an error or 0 results. Here is some sample code: using Microsoft.SharePoint.Search.Query; using (var site = new SPSite(_sharepointUrl, token)) { // FullTextSqlQuery fullTextSqlQuery = new FullTextSqlQuery(site) { QueryText = String.Format("SELECT Title, SiteName, Path FROM Scope() WHERE \"scope\"='All Sites' AND CONTAINS('\"{0}\"')", searchPhrase), //QueryText = String.Format("SELECT Title, SiteName, Path FROM Scope()", searchPhrase), TrimDuplicates = true, StartRow = 0, RowLimit = 200, ResultTypes = ResultType.RelevantResults //IgnoreAllNoiseQuery = false }; ResultTableCollection resultTableCollection = fullTextSqlQuery.Execute(); ResultTable result = resultTableCollection[ResultType.RelevantResults]; DataTable tbl = new DataTable(); tbl.Load(result, LoadOption.OverwriteChanges); } When the scope is set to All Sites I retrieve an error about the search scope not being available. Other search just return 0 results. Any ideas about what I am doing wrong?
