How to recursively serialize an object using reflection ?

I want to navigate to the N-th level of an object, and serialize it's properties in String format. For Example: class Animal { public String name; public int weight; public Animal friend; public Set<Animal> children = new HashSet<Animal>() ; } should be serialized like this: {name:"Monkey", weight:200, friend:{name:"Monkey Friend",weight:300 ,children:{...if has children}}, children:{name:"MonkeyChild1",weight:100,children:{... recursively nested}} } And you may probably notice that it is similar to serializing an object to json. I know there're many libs can do this, can you give me some instructive ideas on how to write this?

Creating a Serializable mock with Mockito error

I'm trying to create a mock object with Mockito that can be serialized. The object is an interface implementation. When this method is called, I receive an object that I want to pass to another object, hence using the doAnswer(...)-method. This is my code. Start tomcat webapp with root privileges

I built a webapp that uses libpcap (via jpcap). In order to be able to get the network interfaces list or to bind to a network interface, the application (in this case a webaap that runs from tomcat server) must be running with root privileges. During development I simply ran Eclipse with root privileges (sudo eclipse) and my webapp worked just fine with Eclipse's local tomcat server. However, when I try to deploy my webapp to the "real" tomcat server, it isn't working. I Also tried to start the tomcat6 service with sudo and changed the TOMCAT6_USER definition (defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6) from "tomcat6" to "root" but it made no difference. What should I do to make it work?

How to find the maximum value for each key in a List of Dictionaries using LINQ?

I have a List of Dictionaries that have keys of type string and values that are ints. Many of the dictionaries have the same keys in them but not all of them. So my question is: using LINQ how would I find the maximum value associated with each distinct key across all of the dictionaries? So for example given the following input: var data = new List<Dictionary<string, int>> { new Dictionary<string, int> {{"alpha", 4}, {"gorilla", 2}, {"gamma", 3}}, new Dictionary<string, int> {{"alpha", 1}, {"beta", 3}, {"gamma", 1}}, new Dictionary<string, int> {{"monkey", 2}, {"beta", 2}, {"gamma", 2}}, }; I would like some kind of collection that contains: {"alpha", 4}, {"gorilla", 2}, {"gamma", 3}, {"beta", 3}, {"monkey", 2} (I'm currently looping through the list and keeping track of things myself, really just wondering if there is a nicer LINQ-esque way of doing it) EDIT: I also don't know what the string keys are in advance

How do polymorphic inline caches work with mutable types?

A polymorphic inline cache works by caching the actual method by the type of the object, in order to avoid the expensive lookup procedures (usually a hashtable lookup). How does one handle the type comparison if the type objects are mutable (i.e. the method might be monkey patched into something different at run time). The one idea I've come up with would be a "class counter" that gets incremented each time a method is adjusted, however this seems like it would be exceptionally expensive in a heavily monkey patched environ since it would kill all the PICs for that class, even if the methods for them weren't altered. I'm sure there must be a good solution to this, as this issue is directly applicable to Javascript and AFAIK all 3 of the big JS VMs have PICs (wow acronym ahoy).

"ant" is not recognized as command in Windows

This is my first time developing Android applications. I'm developing an Android app on Eclipse on Windows 7. I would like to run the Android app from the Windows 7 command line interface. I have my Android device connected to the PC. The workspace directory that I use to store the Android project is C:\Users\Guest\Desktop\Software Applications Development\Java\Android Moblie Applications Projects\Eclipse Indigo for Java EE x64-bit\project workspace I opened the command line interface and I changed the working directory to the Android workspace directory. cd C:\Users\Guest\Desktop\Software Applications Development\Java\Android Moblie Applications Projects\Eclipse Indigo for Java EE x64-bit\project workspace I included Android sdk platform tools directory into the PATH environment variable. c:\Users\admin\Android-sdks\platform-tools Then I entered this into the Windows 7 command line interface: ant debug I have this error message on the cmd: ant is not recognised as an internal or external command, operatable program or batch file. What is the solution to this problem?

Best way to search for a saturation value in a sorted list

A question from Math Battle. This particular question was also asked to me in one of my job interviews. " A monkey has two coconuts. It is fooling around by throwing coconut down from the balconies of M-storey building. The monkey wants to know the lowest floor when coconut is broken. What is the minimal number of attempts needed to establish that fact? " Conditions: if a coconut is broken, you cannot reuse the same. You are left with only with the other coconut Possible approaches/strategies I can think of are Binary break ups & once you find the floor on which the coconut breaks use upcounting from the last found Binary break up lower index. Window/Slices of smaller sets of floors & use binary break up within the Window/Slice (but on the down side this would require a Slicing algorithm of it's own.) Wondering if there are any other way to do this.

I sadly could not make it to EclipseCon last year. It was sad for so many reasons, not the least being that Sweden during that part of the year is cold and dark. ;) This year, however, I will be contributing two talks: ---> HotRockit – What to Expect from Oracle’s Converged JVM Oracle is converging the HotSpot and JRockit JVMs to produce a "best of breed JVM". Internally the project is sometimes referred to as the HotRockit project. There is already a large influx of ideas and solutions provided by the JRockit JVM into the Open JDK. Examples of improvements include: Better monitoring and profiling Improved performance Better ergonomics This talk will discuss what to expect from the converged JVM over the next two years, and how this will benefit the Eclipse community. Production-time Problem Solving in Eclipse This session will look at some common problems and pitfalls in Java applications. The focus will be on non-invasive profiling and diagnostics of running production systems. Thanks in advance from this Ubuntu noob... On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I have installed Sun's JDK7, Eclipse, and the Arduino IDE. I want the Arduino to use OpenJDK 6 and want Eclipse to use Sun's JDK 7. From my understanding I need to manually choose which Java to use before running each application. This led me to the 'update-java-alternatives -l' command... when I run this I only see the following: java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64 1061 /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64 ...but when I run 'update-alternatives --config java' I see the following: *0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java auto mode 1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java manual mode 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/bin/java manual mode 3 /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.7.0/bin/java manual mode I don't understand why the update-java-alternatives doesn't display the same 3 options. I also don't understand how to switch between OpenJDK6 and JDK7. Can someone please explain how I can go about using the OpenJDK6 for Arduino development and Sun JDK7 for Eclipse/Android development? Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2. Where do I start in regards to making a Gnome/Unity Form Application

Ok so I am familiar with developing Form and Console applications on Windows using Visual Studio .Net with C#, but where do I start when it comes to Linux distro's like Ubuntu, is there an equivalent? How would one go about matching what they can do in a Windows environment with .Net and C# in a Linux environment without .Net coding in something like Java or C/C++? I am aware of Eclipse, does eclipse have a form designer or do you have to code the design of any Gnome/Unity forms manually? Can I use eclipse to write the Linux equivalent of a console application, that you just double click on to run? I also know about Mono, but the idea is that I want to learn how to develop software without using anything in the Microsoft stack and am not sure where to start. What is the standard language/framework used to develop these types of applications on Linux? As I become more proficient with Visual Studio, C# and .Net, it has struck me that without these Microsoft tools, I am nothing. I am only capable of developing for the Microsoft OS and this scares me. This isn't some anti Microsoft thing, Microsoft makes some incredible Software/Hardware/Operating Systems/IDE's, but it is generally a bad idea to put all of your eggs in one basket so if I want to learn how to develop Terminal and Gnome/Unity form applications where in the world do I start? I have used Linux on and off for years, but Windows has been my primary OS. However I have watched Linux get better and better and as much as I love Windows 7, I am dubious about Windows 8 (I for one will sorely miss my start menu)! Obviously MS aren't going anywhere anytime soon and I could spend the the next couple of decades developing for .Net without any issues but just because you can get away with something doesn't always mean it's a good idea. Scaling Down Pixel Art?

There's plenty of algorithms to scale up pixel art (I prefer hqx personally), but are there any notable algorithms to scale it down? In my case, the game is designed to run at 1280x720, but if someone plays at a lower resolution I want it to still look good. Most Pixel Art discussions center around 320x200 or 640x480 and upscaling for use in console emulators, but I wonder how modern 2D games like the Monkey Island Remake look good on lower resolutions? (Ignoring the options of having multiple versions of assets (essentially, mipmapping))
