Problem booting virtual machine after converting VMDK to VHD

I used the VMWare VCenter Converter Standalone Client to convert a physical drive on my old PC to a virtual drive. The conversion worked fine and I ended up with a valid VMDK file. Next, I wanted to convert the VMDK to a VHD for use with Microsoft Virtual PC, since that's what I use on my new box. I used WinImage for the conversion and that worked fine, too. I can access the files from the virtual drive through WinImage. However, when I create a new virtual machine using Virtual PC and add the existing VHD file, the machine doesn't boot. The initial boot screen flashes with the amount of RAM and then the screen goes black. If I turn off the VM and reboot in safe mode I can see the drivers being loaded until eventually it gets to crcdisk.sys and hangs indefinitely. Any ideas how to fix this? I'm not opposed to starting over from scratch if there's another method to turn my physical machine into a Virtual PC VM. Thanks! EDIT - I should add that the virtual drive is a system boot drive and not a secondary drive. EDIT - I tried booting from the install CD and doing a repair. The result was that the system could not be repaired due to a "driver error."

How to run multiple instances of Tor?

I'm trying to set up a special proxy server (running Windows). It will have several instances of Privoxy and Tor running and my app will choose which Privoxy instance to send HTTP requests to depending on the load. Privoxy will then forward them to Tor. I'm using srvany.exe to create the services. At the moment I'm running 3 Privoxy and 3 Tor services (I copied the binaries to different folders). Each Privoxy service is listening to its own port (8118, 8119, 8120). I can see them listening in a port scanner. This is the application path (for srvany in registry) for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Privoxy 01\privoxy.exe --service I've also configured the Tor services to listen to different ports (9050, 9052, 9054). This is the application path for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\tor.exe -f "C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\torrc" The problem is, when I start the Tor services, only the first service I start is listening to its port. The others aren't listening. They listen if I run them separately. Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I make all 3 services listen on their assigned ports? Because all of them want a lock on the same file, only the first one I start will be working. The workaround is to run each Tor instance under a different account. Not the best solution, but it works.

backupexec 12.5 not following symlinks on linux agent

Ok, we are at a loss here trying to backup a linux box to a backupexec server... we got a backupexec 12.5 server and a "backupexec for windows servers linux agent" (sigh) running on one of our linux boxes. When a backup runs, we get exceptions reported for our symbolic links. it says something like: BACKUP- \\<servername>\[ROOT] File \\<servername>\[ROOT]/<foldername>/<symlink> is in the backup selection list but was not found. Looking at the selection list, the symlink shows as a 1k file on BUE. Tools-Options-Backup has Backup files and directories by following symbolic links/junction points selected. These same checkboxes are selected on the Job Setup-Job Properties-Edit Template-Advanced Additionally, all the checkboxes are checkeced on Tools-Options-Linux, Unix, and Macintosh and on the Job Set-Job Properties-Edit Template-Linux, Unix, and Macintosh. These checkboxes read: "Preserve change time", "Follow local mount points", "Follow remote mount points", "Backup contents of soft-linked directories" and "Lock remote files", but apparently changing those options produce the same result. Any help on how to get BUE to make a proper backup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Error installing dotnet framework 3.5 SP1 on windows 2008

Getting a really wierd error. One of the developers tried to install Windows 2008 as a Virtual PC. He has also run windows update. When he tries to install dotnet framework 3.5 SP1 he gets the following error: [09/25/09,12:48:26] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS): [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS). MSI returned error code 1 [09/25/09,12:48:34] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS) is not installed. I though that dotnet framework was installed automatically with windows update on windows 2008. So how could it be missing? Thanks. Shiraz EDIT We also have the same problem on a VPC that had dotnet framework 3.5 installed and working OK. I have tried removing all versions of dotnet framework, using the following clean up tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx I then downloaded and tried to install dotnet framework 2.0 SP1, from this location: http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=79BC3B77-E02C-4AD3-AACF-A7633F706BA5&displaylang=en The error I now get is: "This product is not supported on the Vista Operating System" EDIT Thanks for the help, have given an up vote to everyone. In the end our problem was that we had installed Windows Server 2008 from an older ISO image, on this everything worked fine untill we tried to install framework 3.5 SP1. We reinstalled Windows from a new image, and it worked OK.

How to remove a plain text protecting single quote from all the selected cells in LibreOffice Calc?

I've imported a CSV file having the first column to be date-time values in ISO 8601 format like 2012-01-01T00:00:00.000Z for the first moment of the year 2012. Then, willing to make LibreOffice to recognize the format (as I was looking forward to plot a diagram), I've selected the column, chosen Format Cells... and entered the custom time format as YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS.000Z And this seems to work if... I edit a cell to remove a hidden single-quote from its beginning (which serves to protect a cell content from being interpreted) as all the newly formatted cells now store values like '2012-01-01T00:00:00.000Z (note the single quote - it is only visible when you edit a particular cell). And I am to do so for all the cells in the column. How can I automate this? UPDATE: I've already found a solution for the particular case of mine: it helps to set a column format to "time" in the CSV import dialogue. But I am still curious how could this be done in case I wouldn't have the original .csv data file to import but only the .ods file with the data already imported without the format specified at the import time.

VMware Fusion configuration files missing

I need to set up port forwarding to my VM in Fusion 5. Everywhere on the net, the solution is described as editing the file: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf However, on my install, that file doesn't exist. Neither does the vmnet8 directory. Here is the full content of VMware stuff I have in /Library/Application Support/: /Library/Application Support/ VMware/ VMware Fusion AdminWritable Shared vmInventory usbarb.rules VMware Fusion That's right: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ exists but is empty. And there is no VMware folder in other Library directories on my system. I am running OS X 10.8.2. I just reinstalled Fusion 5.02, no change. Meanwhile, I have 3 VMs that work just fine. So how am I supposed to set up port forwarding with Fusion 5? Thanks, JD Edit: in a hunch, I tried ps ax | grep natd which returned: 9646 ?? S 0:00.01 /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmnet-natd -s 7 -m /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.mac -c /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf So it seems that the configurations files are now in the directory /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion. I'll work from here and edit this question as I make progress.

Mediawiki extension error

I'm running the latest version of mediawiki using MoWeS Portable II from my desktop. I just installed this extension on the wiki http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MsUpload It adds an option to upload files (to be embedded in an article) to the edit screen of an article. Preventing Windows version of Vim from destroying other file systems permissions

I am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin. The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it. A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive. Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions? Edit: This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.

SQL Server slow in production environment

I have a weird problem in a customer's production environment. I can't give any details on the infrastructure, except that SQL server runs on a virtual server. The data, log and filestream file are on another storage server (data and filestream together and log on a separate server). In our local Test environment, there's one particular query that executes with these durations: first we clear the cache 300ms (First time it takes longer, but from then on it's cached.) 20ms 15ms 17ms In the customer's production environment, the SQL Server is more powerful, these are the durations (I didn't have the rights to clear the cache. Will try this tomorrow). 2500ms 2600ms 2400ms The servers in the customer's production environment are more powerful but they do have virtual servers (we don't). What could be the cause... Not enough memory? Fragmentation? Physical storage? How would you tackle this performance problem? EDIT: Some people have asked me if the data set is equal and it is. I restored their database on our environment. It's true that this was the first thing I looked at. (@Everyone: I added the edit because it will be the first thing that many will think off).

Port forwarding + shared connection with Ubuntu

Because my wireless router's ethernet ports are defective, I set up a shared wireless connection from my laptop (which has wifi) to my eMac (which does not) via a crossover ethernet cable. The laptop is behind a router as 192.168.1.131, and the eMac is behind the laptop as 10.42.43.1 . The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic). I achieved the shared connection through NetworkManager Applet. I right-clicked on the network icon at the topright, went to Edit Connections, selected the Wired connection named "Auto eth0", clicked "Edit...", went to the "IPv4 Settings" tab, and selected the Method "Shared to other computers". The eMac can now access the Internet. Now I want to enable port forwarding. There's a game I want to play that needs port 6112 forwarded (both TCP and UDP) in order to host games. I set up the router to enable port forwarding for 192.168.1.131 (the laptop), but port forwarding still isn't available on the eMac. I suppose I need to pretend my laptop is a router and configure port forwarding on it, indicating that incoming connections to the laptop (192.168.1.131) should be forwarded to the eMac on the shared connection (10.42.43.1 ). Thus, packets coming into the router on port 6112 would be redirected to the laptop (by the router), then to the eMac (by the laptop). My question is, how would I do that on Ubuntu (in light of NetworkManager's presence)? Also, if I can't get this to work, does anyone mind hosting a comp stomp? :D

SSH garbling characters in vim/nano on remote server

... and it's driving me insane. Basically (this has been happening over the past couple months), I log into a few different CentOS servers (one Linode, another VPS, and a shared host to which I have shell access), running 5.5, 5.7, and 6, from my Mac running OS X Lion, using Terminal. Basically: $ ssh [email protected] [remote-host] $ nano somefile.txt Once I start editing the file, if I use the arrow keys to move around the cursor, or start deleting, then typing again, the cursor jumps around a bit, and if I save the file and reopen it, it's obvious that the cursor was, in fact, jumping all over the place on a line for no apparent reason. I end up getting things like "This is a neof text." When I had typed in (to the cursor-crazy editor) "This is a line of text." It's a big problem when it comes to editing configuration files, because I often have to edit one line, save and close, then reopen just to make sure that line is right... then edit another line... and it's getting quite annoying. I found Linode Lish Shell Vim and Nano rendering troubles: lines not appearing / cursor positions wrong, but I don't know if that relates much, since that's specifically referring to lish.

My hard drive seems to be overheating... what should I do?

After a cold boot, the hard drive in my notebook jumps to 56? within an hour or so of idling. Is 56? a cause for alarm? Notes: The notebook is on a flat desk and none of the vents are obstructed. The video card is currently at 55? and the CPU at 50?. It's a Western Digital 250GB hard drive. SMART reports the drive healthy but does warn that: Edit: this problem had a very surprise ending. I inverted the notebook and unscrewed some of the panels on the back (there was one covering the hard drive, and one that provided access to the memory). I couldn't see any dust, so I simply screwed everything back together and powered it on... and it worked! The temperature is now staying at 46?, and it feels notable cooler to the touch. So I can only assume that some internal fan was malfunctioning or something. Whatever the case, it's working now so I won't complain. Edit: I have an SSD now, so temperature isn't as big an issue as it was when I had a mechanical drive.

Recommendations for secure business collaboration tools

I'm searching for a secure and easy way for business partners to collaboratively edit and exchange documents, share calendars, create schedules, and assign tasks. I speculate that the ideal collaboration environment or work-flow would actually involve several technologies and services. My co-workers and I have tried a variety of things from Google Apps to Wiki's, but nothing feels very fluid or complete. I suppose defining what we need and our constraints is probably in order: collaboratively edit basic text documents and spreadsheets exchange documents like flow-charts, graphs, and files generated by our other desktop applications, but not source code assign tasks to each other and ourselves and track the history of those tasks easily see when relevant documents have been modified since last viewing and ability to easily push notifications to relevant workers (a clean front page that shows updates would probably suffice) provide limited access to contract workers and guests users if a remote user system is compromised (keystroke logger or other spyware) we don't want the criminal to be able to gain access to all business documents (processes, trade-secrets, customer lists, etc.) simply because they gained access to a single Google account (or whatever web service) Cannot be a difficult to administer VPN infrastructure Cannot cost more than $100 per month (yeah, money is tight) Needs to support up to 25 users We can host our own web applications, but it must be low maintenance solution

Sql Server Management Studio: Change Prefix or Suffix characters

I have an instance of SSMS 2008, for which the option to edit data in a table doesn't work. If I right-click on any table in the Object Explorer and select 'Edit top 200 rows' I get an error dialog 'Invalid prefix or suffix characters. (MS Visual Database Tools)'. The error seems to be associated specifically with SSMS, not with SQL Server (because this SSMS instance gives the same error no matter what database I connect to, but I've verified I can connect to some of the same databases using SSMS on other machines without the error). (However, our firewall prevents me using SSMS on other machines for some crucial tasks, so I do need to fix the problem). Googling for the error suggests that I should change the prefix, suffix or escape character, but without any indication of how you can make that change in SSMS. I'd also note that I'm not aware of having done any customization on SSMS since installing it, so would be surprised at having to make such a change now. Does anyone have any idea what the error message means or what I can do about it? Or how I can change the prefix/suffix/escape characters if that is really the problem.

No Outbound Internet on Windows Home Server

Could someone provide some steps for me to check my internet connection on my Windows Home Server? It seems to have intermittent connectivity issues and I am unsure of how to diagnose the problem because it is a headless (no monitor, no keyboard) machine so the only way to get to the device is via remote desktop (which works fine). When connected to the machine, it doesn't pull up any microsoft.com sites and some other sites it does pull up (i.e. gmail.com) and some it doesn't (stackoverflow.com). To make matters more complicated, it has worked intermittently in the past for reasons unknown. Are there tools I can use to properly diagnose the reason for the connection failure? I can ping 127.0.0.1 just fine, I have internet working on my other router-connected machines, so I'm not sure why this one would fail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and up-voted :) ** edit - thanks for suggestions guys, I'm going to try these tonight and will update my post. ** edit #2 - I hoping this is a more permanant fix, but I have both changed my port on the router as well as restarted the router at the same time. Windows Server 2003 DHCP not handing out IPs

I'm trying to setup a home server (to tinker with) as a domain controller. I've setup the domain and I've installed DHCP and setup a scope without any exclusions (with the default range of 192.168.0.1-254). My client machine is a Windows 7 (RC) machine and it has a connection but can't get an IP address. Even if I try setting the IP to a static 192.168.0.2 and there is still no connectivity. I can ping it from the server, but pinging the server from the client just times out. The only thing between the server and the client is a 24 port switch (D-Link DES-1024D). edit Ok, it turned out that the interfaces were setup backwards in the NAT settings (the internal nic connection was set to public and the external nic connection was set to private). I changed this and all was OK.... sort-of. Problem is now: If I set a static ip on the client (where I am typing this from) all is fine. BUT; when I set it to get it from DHCP, I get a correct IP from the server (192.168.0.2) but there is no internet on the client; but I can still ping the server fine from the client (which makes sense cause I was able to get an IP from it). edit I ended up just removing the Routing and DHCP server roles and just going with ICS for the time being until I get my hands on some better learning tools.

I have two PC's that I am using PC1 - (used for configuring the 6 switches via minicom) PC2 - to monitor the traffic between the switches via the Ports that are marked with arrows in the diagram. STEP 1: I create a new vlan On Switch 3 (SW3) that includes Port 12 and Port 22. I also assign l3-interface to the vlan (vlan_2) with ip address - 192.168.1.7. Now I plug-in Port 0 of Switch 3 on PC2. Now I try pinging 192.168.1.7 from PC2 (192.168.1.10) I want to know what will happen? My postulation is that I will not be able to ping SW3 from PC2.This is because SW3 (Port 12 and Port 22) is a part of a vlan_2 and vlan_2 logically breaks up broadcast domains and so 192.168.1.7 will not be reachable from 192.168.1.10. Now I have an l3-interface on SW1 with IP 192.168.1.1 using default vlan( vlan-id 0). Similarly I have enabled IP on SW2 - 192.168.1.2 SW3 - 192.168.1.3 SW4 - 192.168.1.4 SW5 - 192.168.1.5 SW6 - 192.168.1.6 all using default vlan. I create VLAN2 with the following configuration SW3 - Port 12,Port 22. SW6 - Port 14 I create VLAN3 with the following configuration SW3 - Port 0 SW6 - Port 0 I also configure a VLAN trunk between SW3 and SW6 using the following commands. edit interfaces ge-0/0/12 set unit 0 family ethernet-switching port-mode trunk edit interfaces ge-0/0/12 set unit 0 family ethernet-switching vlan members all There is a redundant path in the network as the loop between SW3 and SW6 is closed.There is no broadcast storm in the network? Is anyone aware of an org-sort function / modification that can refile / organize a group of TODO so that it sorts them by three (3) criteria: first sort by due date, second sort by priority, and third sort by by title of the task? EDIT: I believe that org-sort by deadline (?d) has a bug that cannot properly handle undated tasks. I am working on a workaround (i.e., moving the undated todo to a different heading before the deadline (?d) sort occurs), but perhaps the best thing to do would be to try and fix the original sorting function. DNS configuration issues. Clients inside network unable to resolve DNS server's name

Setup the DNS service on Ubuntu 12.04 64 and all apears to be well except that my dhcp clients do not recognize my DNS servers hostname. When doing a nslookup on one of my Windows clients, I get C:\Users\chad>nslookup Default Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.1.2 Where I would expect the FQDN in the spot where UnKnown is seen. The DNS server know's itself pretty well, but I think only because I have an entry in the /etc/hosts file to resolve. There's so many places to look I don't even know where to begin. Are there any logs I can look at? Something. Windows file locks allowing multiple users to write to open file over network

I have 6 windows computers (xp,vista,7) that need to access a samba share (Ubuntu 12.04). I am trying to make it so only one client can open a file at a given time. I thought this was pretty standard behavior of file locks, but I can't get it to work. The way it is right now a file can be open by two users, and changed and saved by either one of them. The last file saved overwrites what ever changes the other user made. At first I thought this was a Samba configuration problem, but I get this behavior even between two windows machines. So far I have only tested: Windows Xp Windows Vista Windows XP Samba << Windows Vista and both give the same behavior. When I tested the Samba configuration, I had set strict locking = yes and get errors logged like this: close_remove_share_mode: Could not get share mode lock for file _prod/part_number_list_COPY.xlsx Eventually all of the files are going to be moved onto the Samba share, so that is the configuration I am most concerned about fixing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tested an excel file again, and it is now working properly in both above mentioned cases, I am also no longer getting the above mentioned error. I don't know what happened, perhaps a restart fixed it? (also works with strict locking = no) Although I still need to find a solution for the CAD/CAM files we use, the software is Vector and it does not seem to be using file locks. Is there any software that I can use to manage these files, so two people can't open/edit them at a time? Maybe a windows application that forces file locks? Or a dirt simple version control system? (the only ones I have seen at are too complicated for our needs).

How to create an MST for silent install using Orca?

Hi. I'm trying to deploy 7zip via GPO; I assigned the original MSI, but the package installation simply doesn't take place. What I've gathered is that I need to create an MST. In the spirit of trying to learn as much as possible about it, I've opted to use Orca rather than a third-party automagic tool, but I'm at a loss as to which fields to edit. So far the only change that I've made is to give the license accepted checkbox a value of "1" instead of pointing to another key that, still, just gave it a value of "1." So, to give this some structure, How does (Or what criteria should I consider) creating a MST make the install noninteractive/silent? Do you have to manually reconfigure the MSI to simply not perform the GUI aspects? Or do I have to execute the program in silent mode after defining the variables the the installer requests? (Though, of course, it seems that would defeat the purpose of the MST) How do I determine which fields I need to edit? I've loaded the installer and it takes three inputs: License acceptance, feature set and installation location. I want all of the default values: I'm just trying to deploy it at all, not customize the installation. I BELIEVE that I should be messing with some values in the Registry table, but I really don't know. If I'm not asking the right questions, can someone point me to a THOROUGH resource or documentation for this process? I've already gone over the technet articles on basic Orca use and deployment, but I couldn't really find anything on creating MST that didn't involve a third party program in which one runs a 'dummy' installer to get the before and after snapshots.
