• Diagnose Issues with USB External Hard Drive

  I have a 1TB SATA hard drive in a third-party USB enclosure hooked up to my computer via USB. The drive has become increasingly unreliable, randomly unmounting and remounting in Windows, making strange noises on occasion, and every once in a while making lots of noise and then unmounting, only fixable by powering down the enclosure, waiting a while, then powering it back up again. I am unsure if the hard drive or the enclosure is to blame. The random unmount/remount could be the enclosure, but the strange sounds are likely related to the hard drive. Given this uncertainty, I want to figure out which of the two items needs to be replaced. However, I do not know of a way to test each item separately since I do not have an extra SATA-to-USB enclosure to test the hard drive with or an extra SATA hard drive to test the enclosure with. Does anyone know how to figure out what's to blame so that I don't have to replace both unless it is absolutely necessary.

• Amazon AWS Ec2 instance, Elastic IP, Domain name from external domainseller, and Google Apps for Email

  We are hosting our site on an Ec2 instance. Our Elastic IP is w.x.y.z and Public DNS is: ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com. We've bought a domain name domainname.com from a lesser known domain-name-seller. We added an A-record pointing domainname.com to w.x.y.z. Will this work or do we need a CNAME record to point to the same too? We wanted to use Google apps for emailing so adjusted the TXT/MX records according to the Google Apps instructions to be able to send/recv email using @domainname.com email addresses. Have we got it right, more important, we came across queries relating to email sent from ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com (our users can send email from their onsite accounts) going to spam (rDNS not pointing to domainname.com but to ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com). How can we fix this? We came across SPF records, do they provide a complete solution? We aren't sure as to how to use them. Can you help pls? Thank you, Sid

• Issue with IIS...SERVER APPLICATION UNAVAILABLE

  My web application was running absolutely fine. Just 2 days back, I got an error saying. SERVER APPLICATION UNAVAILABLE I am pretty certain that nothing was changed on IIS. Unless my automatic Windows updates screwed it up completely. My event viewer had zillions of following errors in Application category. aspnet_wp.exe could not be started. The error code for the failure is C0000005. This error can be caused when the worker process account has insufficient rights to read the .NET Framework files. Please ensure that the .NET Framework is correctly installed and that the ACLs on the installation directory allow access to the configured account. I reinstalled IIS. After installing, i ran aspnet_regiis -i for framework v2 and now it throws error saying - The application could not be initialized properly. Any ideas what going on?

  Question1: What is the best online forum to ask MSFT Excel questions of the following variety? Question2: How can I link an excel pivot-table to a potentially changing source table without having to re-draw the excel pivot-table layout every time the source table changes data. (Note, the columns are not changing, just the data in the rows). Background: I have an excel 2007 pivot table that is grabbing data from another sheet (an excel "table" ... tables are a new feature of excel 2007). When I change the data in the source table, and then go to the pivot table and press "refresh" ... the pivot table reverts to its "blank" format and requires me to re-drag the columns rows and values. What I want is for the pivot-table to simply re-draw itself without me having to re-create the pivot table layout.

  I want to migrate from my current mail server (old_server) for my domain mydomain.com. old_server setup is Postfix+LDAP+Cyrus. Now I want to migrate my domain mail to Zimbra server (zimbra), but I am considering option to leave current mail server working in the first phase, and then to only have subset of email addresses to be forwarded to zimbra server. It seems that zimbra refers this in their documentation as 'edge MTA'. Current config mydomain.com MX: old_server <---------- smtp send ----------> smtp receive New config mydomain.com MX: old_server zimbra <------------------------------------------- smtp send ----------> smtp receive ---- forward ----> smtp receive I need following: old_server to receive mail for my domain as before, but for some of the email addresses I want them to be delivered to zimbra server. I should be able to determine which email addresses will be forwarded. I would like to avoid possible false spam detections for mails from mydomain.com due to this setup. Questions: How should I configure postfix on old_server to support this mail forwarding? To avoid false spam detection, can I have outgoing mail from mydomain.com to be sent by zimbra or should I use old_server? Is there anything extra I would need to do in order to avoid possibility of my outgoing mails being marked as spam on other servers?

  I'm moving to Google Apps and have setup dual-delivery. Everything is fine, but for mail sent internally (from [email protected] to [email protected]), Exchange is not using the send connectors I have pointing to Google's servers. I believe my question is similar to this question: How to force internal email through an smtp connector in exchange 2007 Again, if a user is connected to the Exchange server and tries to send to [email protected] it works just fine, but I cannot seem to force *@mydomain.com to route correctly. This should be a fairly simple, but according to this: google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Apps/thread?tid=30b6ad03baa57289&hl=en (can't post two links due to spam prevention) It does not seem possible. Any ideas?

• Configure TV Capture card to not use external audio jack for TV audio output

  I had this working with MythTV on Ubuntu 9.1. Then a power surge killed the motherboard. After replacing the motherboard, ram and cpu, the card does not produce any audio except through the output jack on the back of the card. I do not want to use a cable to go from the back of the card to the audio in on the built in sound card of the new mother board. FYI, the old motherboard did not have an on-board sound card. There was a separate audio card installed. There's some configuration that has to be done to have it work the same way again. I just have no idea where to start. • Possible to direct naked domain to external IP

  So I found this post: configure Bind to have a custom domain on tumblr and I was trying to ask a related question: Would it be possible to set up an A record pointing traffic to domain.com to Tumblr and feed.domain.com to the IP address of my choice? In other words, by setting up a naked domain A record to Tumblr's IP, will I inherently lose traffic to feed.domain.com? Can I write another A record for the specific subdomains I want to point to my server? I hope this makes sense.

• After installing Win7 on my laptop I'm having trouble extending the desktop to an external monitor

  I have a HP TX2000 laptop and a HP w2408 screen. Yesterday, I installed Win7 and I'm having trouble having the 24 inches screen work as a secondary screen. It seems like my laptop cannot detect both screens (its own and the 24 inches one). I think I already have all the drivers installed (I ran Win7's tool to detect and automatically update drivers and it said everything was up to date!), so what might be the problem? If I connect the 24 inch screen to my laptop, it will happily show a copy of what is being shown on that big screen too, but I'd like to have it ''extend'' the desktop to the big screen, instead.

• When and why would Windows Explorer lock an external hard disk?

  I am quite surprised to see that Windows Explorer is locking my external hard disk. Is there any reason why explorer.exe is holding on to my external hard disk? Before I was trying to detach the external hard disk, I was opening a csproj file using Visual Studio 2008. I made sure that I closed down Visual Studio before trying to detach the external hard disk. There was no other active program except Google Chrome, from what I could see, that was running.

  I have an OpenVPN server and a client, and I want to use this tunnel to access not only 10.0.8.0/24 but the whole internet. So far, pinging the server from the client through the tun0 interface works, and vice versa. However, pinging www.google.com from the client through tun0 doesn’t work (all packets are lost). • Internal users can't receive email sent by application

  We have an application server that hosts a CRM application. It is using SMTP on it's own server to send emails. If I send an email using the application to [email protected], it shows up in my inbox. If I send an email to [email protected], it never shows up. It doesn't matter what address I put in for @MyCompanyDomain.com, they never get through. Any email addresses outside our domain/firewall get through. We're using Exchange 2007 and when I look at the message tracking logs, the missing messages don't show up there, either. Is there something I need to configure in Exchange or the SMTP server on the application server? I can't figure out why emails get outside the firewall but internal emails never show up. • Mac OSX application running but window is not visible

  greatful for any assistance as this is driving me nuts.. I'm running an application on my macbook pro, and since yesterday I can't see the application's main window. It's icon is showing in the doc and it's options are showing in the top menu bar on the desktop. The program is running normally in all other respects as far as I can tell (its an audio sampler which I am triggering via an external pedal, so I can tell its working). The window did show up once in Expose but now it is not showing up there either (no idea why). I've tried adding the application to every space in 'Spaces' and also removing the preferences file but neither of those helped. I have also reinstalled the application. I really need this back for a music project so any help would be massively appreciated, cheers!

• Internal and External DNS from Different Servers, Same Zone

  Hello All, I am either having trouble understanding how DNS works, or I am having trouble configuring my DNS correctly (either one isn't good). I am currently working with a domain, I'll call it webdomain.com, and I need to allow all of our internal users to get out to dotster to get our public DNS entries just like the rest of the world. Then, on top of that, I want to be able to supply just a few override DNS entries for testing servers and equipment that is not available publically. As an example: public.webdomain.com - should get this from dotster outside.webdomain.com - should get this from dotster as well testing.webdomain.com - should get this from my internal dns controller The problem that I seem to be running into at every turn is that if I have an internal DNS controller that contains a zone for webdomain.com then I can get my specified internal entries but never get anything from the public DNS server. This holds true regardless of the type of DNS server I use also--I have tried both a Linux Bind9 and a Windows 2008 Domain Controller. I guess my big question is: am I being unreasonable to think that a system should be able to check my specified internal DNS and in the case where a requested entry doesn't exist it should fail over to the specified public dns server -OR- is this just not the way DNS works and I am lost in the sauce? It seems like it should be as simple as telling my internal DNS server to forward any requests that it can't fulfill to dotster, but that doesn't seem to work. Could this be a firewall issue? This is a java application (java com.run.run.Run) etc. How would I have it launch as a user and possibly have access to write to some log file where the user has permissions to write? • Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

  I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction? When reselecting, Visual Studio will automatically add references to System.Deployment, System.Drawing and System.Windows.Forms C# Create a new project with the Empty Project template (Visual C# - Windows) Go to the project properties, and change the Application type to any of the choices. Visual studio will not add references. Question Is there a way to change this behaviour for Visual Basic?
